Special Steak Mix Set

Special Steak Mix Set

I met up with a friend for dinner tonight (he also happens to be quite a well-known food blogger) and he introduced me to this Japanese restaurant at Bugis+. It's not an area that I usually frequent so I hardly get to eat at the new restaurants there. Yayoiken is located on the ground floor of Bugis+ and sells pretty great Japanese sets. I ordered the Special Mix Steak Set ($19.90) which comes with Beef, Chicken, Bacon and a Hamburg Steak with potatoes, bean sprouts, a salad with sesame dressing and Miso Soup too.

The meats here are of quite good quality for the price that you pay, especially the beef. I particularly enjoyed the fried potato cubes which were crispy on the outside, yet soft and mashy on the inside. The staff were very attentive to our needs and friendly as well. I'll definitely love to re-visit this restaurant when I'm in the Bugis area again.

Best Duck Rice In SG? Smile Jan 23, 2013

Boneless Braised Duck

Boneless Braised Duck

My boss brought us here for lunch today claiming that this is one of the best duck rice in the area. True enough, the duck here is quite different from other braised boneless duck stalls. The meat comes very thinly sliced and is a bit more dry and chewy compared to most braised duck rice. One thing I particularly liked about the duck is the sauce that they used - a combination of both sweet and salty. However, the rice they served did not make the cut. It was plain white rice served with some of the sauce from the duck. I would have given this stall 5-stars if they have the dark yam rice instead.

We also ordered the eggy Tofu, Kang Kong and some duck innards (which I don't eat). The tofu was quite good - silky and very eggy. I can't say much for the sambal Kang Kong since I'm not a chili person either. Overall, it was a satisfying lunch at a rather nostalgic duck rice stall.

Freshly Baked Quiche Smile Jan 20, 2013

Quiche With Potato Salad

Quiche With Potato Salad

The Rotisserie is located just beside Obolo Galeria at Rochester Mall. The mall is quite new and has a number of interesting restaurants like Cali's Cafe and 2fifteen Kitchen. I was there on a weekday to have lunch with a few colleagues and ended up ordering their Quiche set ($9.90) which is baked fresh daily and comes with a choice of sides. I picked the potato salad but the other sides like their pasta salad and lentils looked really yummy too. The Quiche was quite good and the potato salad was not bad either. I also added a Pineapple Smoothie ($3.50) to my meal - it was a super sour concoction packed with loads of vitamin C. Overall, the staff here are friendly and it's a quiet, cozy place to have a meal at.

Pepperoni Pizza

Pepperoni Pizza

This is one of my favourite restaurants to have good pizza at. It's tucked away in Forum which is a rather quiet mall and has a good selection of gourmet pizzas to choose from. We ordered a Pepperoni Pizza that comes with lots of mushrooms and cheese.
Avocado Chicken Wrap

Avocado Chicken Wrap

It was also our first time trying their Chicken Avocado wrap thingie that is deep-fried to a crisp - the creamy texture of the avocado went really well with the crispy exterior and the chicken cubes. Overall, this is a really nice place to hang out and chill over some pizzas.

Not So Brave! Smile Jan 20, 2013

Peri-Peri Chicken

Peri-Peri Chicken

I must admit that I don't have a very good impression of Nando's because of their terribly lackluster service, but their food is genuinely good so I occasionally still eat here once in a while. Even at the Star Vista branch where it's not that crowded, the staff at Nando's have this "I could care less" attitude and made us wait in line when there was no one else in the queue at all. This branch is located at basement of Star Vista and has more or less the same interior design concept as the rest of the Nando's branches.

Anyway, as I'm not much of a chili person, I opted for the lemon and herb peri peri chicken that comes with a "Not So Brave" flag on it which is kinda cute. The set costs $13.90 and comes with 2 additional sides of your choice - I chose the garden salad and wedges, but they do have other choices like Mediterranean rice and spinach. If you're planning to eat here with a larger group, I would suggest to opt for a massive combo platter just for the fun of it since the portions are more or less the same as individual orders.
