Mexican in fast food style!  OK Apr 25, 2013

I love the depth of flavours in this cuisine and the fresh seafood blended in with all the spices. But, it is kind of sad because in Singapore, Mexican food is not exactly affordable. For a review on Mexican food, please visit our post on Viva Mexico! But before you head over to read, continue on our review on Baja Fresh!

Steak Fajitas $14.95. Honestly, I was pretty disappointed that it came in a plate. I was kind of expecting the hot sizzling Fajitas that give off the alluring smoke of fragrance from afar. Well, and then I came back to reality that I am in a fastfood Mexican chain and not some restaurant.

The steak was tasteless and there was nothing amazing about the rice. Even for this price, I wouldn't want to have this again.

Chicken, Shrimp, Steak Fajitas $14.95. Well, it was pretty much the same as the steak fajitas, just that this had more variety in it.

In case you were wondering, they offer 2 choices of tortillas: corn and the flour tortillas. The corn tortilla is just the soft version of the nachos. Personally, I prefer the flour tortilla.

All in all, I feel that this was really not worth going to based on the mere two dishes that I tried. But, please drop down to have a try if you are around that vicinity and craving for some savoury Mexican food. You can try the other dishes like the Burritos and share with us your views on them!

For more photos and review, please view http://thumbsforfood.blogspot.sg/2013/03/ikoi-japanese-restaurant-thumbsforfood.html

Ikoi has been around for very long. Just the mention of the name and I'm sure Japanese Buffet lovers will know where is it.

Having heard so much about its big name, I was thrilled to be able to finally try it out. The ala-carte buffet goes at $35++. So, I got to say it was really quite disappointing. You can check out our reviews on Irodori and Senki. I would still recommend Irodori over Ikoi.

Here are some of the dishes we ordered...

The thing that is a must order is the mixed Sashimi Platter. Having heard that the sashimi is one of the freshest, I was disappointed. The meat of the fish was rather dry and was pretty rough in texture. The best thing would probably be the swordfish sashimi. But really, even the Salmon Sashimi did not taste fresh enough to make me crave for another plate. The tuna was really bad, it was quite fishy and tough.

Ikoi really lack variety. It's hard to pick which is my favorite dish from all the ones we tried. (Yes, we even ordered cherry tomatoes.) It's hard to pick because the food really tasted mediocre. If given a choice, I would choose Irodori anytime.

Overall, I really think it's not worth the money to dine there. Really can't figure out how Ikoi gained its popularity because the standard now really isn't impressive.

For full review and photos, please visit http://thumbsforfood.blogspot.sg/2013/03/old-tiong-bahru-bak-kut-teh.html

Hello to our readers out there! Hope you had a great week [: As most of us know, the Tiong Bahru area has become one of the popular places to do cafe-hunting or just chill amidst its old architectures. Today, we shall bring to you this Old Tiong Bahru Bak Kut Teh which I have always wanted to try. It is located just opposite the Tiong Bahru Market, and a few steps away from Dough & Grains. Read our review on this special bread shop after this!

Pork Ribs Bak Kut Teh. Yes, this is the whole main point. But, as I mentioned earlier, the meat wasn't enough to make up for the poor standard of the soup.

Pig Trotters. This is the best dish and it is really good. The pig trotters was really well-handled, with no traces of hair or any smell. The black sauce was so good that I basically ignored the other dishes. If you are there, try this!

All in all, I think this is definitely not up to my standards for a nice bowl of bak kut teh. However, I might just return for the pig trotters and tau kee (beancurd skin) which was really tasty!

Custom make your own sushi roll!  OK Apr 07, 2013

For full reviews, please visit http://thumbsforfood.blogspot.sg/2013/03/maki-san-thumbsforfood.html

Maki San has been around for quite some time in the basement of The Cathay. At Maki San, you get to customize your sushi and salad!

Maki San is actually quite a small eatery. I would find that it is more of a place to grab a bite rather than to go there to have a proper meal. Having said that, I really like the creativity of the shop!

What is cool is that Maki San's sushi rolls come served in this really pretty and colorful drawer-like box that makes one happy and anticipate eating it.

As you can see in the pictures below, we picked our own ingredients and they rolled it into a roll, cut it into even pieces and place it in the box. One thing good is that they have quite a substantial amount of ingredients you can choose from. From the choice of wrap to the choice of rice and the sauces, I got to say it took quite long for us to decide what we wanted.

Overall, I would say Maki San is not a bad choice for people who want a light and relatively healthy meal! Price wise, I would say it's a little steep. And we tried the Miso Soup which tasted just mediocre.

Not worth the buck  OK Oct 17, 2012

For full review and photos, please visit http://thumbsforfood.blogspot.sg/2012/10/the-tastings-room-marina-square.html

We went to The Tastings Room during Restaurant Week and had their set dinner. The main courses were really not fantastic. The Duck Confit was too salty and the Wagyu Beef Cheeks were disappointing. sad

The Gâteaux au fromage was the best amongst all the 4 courses. The cheesecake was really soft. We love the texture so much! The raspberry sauce by the side complimented the cheesecake well too. smile

The setting of the restaurant is rather casual. The food is not the best you can find. For Restaurant Week's standard, I think it was really quite disappointing. But, look out for their drinks promotion with free flow of truffle fries!
