Dinner at Thai Express Smile Oct 24, 2012

Categories : Thai

After a long day at work, my friend and I decided to settle for a simple dinner at Jurong Point. As she has a craving for Thai food, hence we ended up at Thai Express. Luckily there wasn't a queue for tonight, so we managed to find a table for 2 easily.

This Thai Express outlet was located in the basement of Jurong Point 2, where people can literally see and stare at you from above floors while you dine as all the restaurants located along that row doesn't have any "roof".

As I have a slight craving for green curry and crayfish, I ordered their green curry noodle with crayfish. Their green curry is my all-time favourite and I would never fail to order on each of my visits.

Here's the photo of my Green Curry Noodle with Crayfish:

When my Green Curry noodle with crayfish was served, I felt the food presentation could be further improved as you can only see the crayfish and if we only judge the food based on its appearance, in my own opinion, this dish certainly doesn't counts as attractive. But I am definitely impressed when I had my first taste of the green curry. The Green Curry broth was certainly thick and aromatic. It tasted great, but albeit a little too salty, which we didn't really like. The mee tasted normal while the potato tasted mediocre. The potato cubes were hard, tasteless and I think it would have been better if they had boiled longer and make it softer. As for the crayfish, it tasted normal. All in all, the only saving factor would be the yummy green curry as the rest of the items for this dish tasted mediocre.

Here's the photo of her Tom Yum Seafood noodle:

Similar to the Green Curry, the Tom Yum Seafood noodle tasted a little too salty too. For the first taste, the Tom Yum tasted good but on subsequent tastes, the effects wore off and I felt the taste became normal and stagnating. As for the potato cubes, as usual they were hard and tasteless, hence she totally didn't eat the potato cubes at all. Seafood portion wasn't a lot too. There were only a handful mixture of small prawn, squid but we think it was slightly too little.

Here's the photo of our first side dish: Otah ($8.90)

For the price of $8.90, the otah certainly seems pricey upon first impression. But as we bite into the otah meat, we were surprised to find that it consist of pure fish meat that is soft and tender and tasted good. Also, there were a few prawns scattered in the otah too. I ordered the otah out of curiosity. Although it tasted good, but if you ask me, I won't re-order on my next visit as there's nothing special about the otah, for the $8.90 price that was charged for that 1 piece of otah. If I top up an additional $2, I could have gotten a bowl of noodle at around $10+.

Here's the photo of our second side dish: Fried Pancake

I would say this Fried Pancake tasted good but other than that, I also won't re-order on my next visit as there's no compelling reason for me to eat it again. The sweet chilli sauce that accompanied the Fried Pancake was nice.

Here's another angle taken of the Fried Pancake, showing what the pancake itself contains.

Before I forgot, the waitress served us a mini starter complimentary dish, with the following photo:

We were pleased with the service level of the waitresses as they were very prompt when we waved for one of them to take our orders. Also, they were very friendly and polite during the order-taking. However one thing they could have improve on is the refilling of our glass of ice-water. Although they walked past us a few times, they didn't help us to refill our ice-water until I signaled for them to do so.

Our orders are:
1) Green curry Crayfish Laksa = $14.90
2) Red Tom Yum Seafood Laksa = $9.90
3) Thai Seafood Otah = $7.90
4) Crispy Pancake = $7.90
Total = $47.80 (includes 10% Service Charge + 7% GST)

I think the total cost of our meal is still reasonable, given the serving of our food portions are reasonable and both the broth of the Green Curry and Tom Yum were very yummy! However our dining experience could have further improved if they make both the Green Curry and Tom Yum less salty. Would I re-visit this Thai Express outlet again? Yes I would but I would definitely want to try out their other dishes on my next visit.

Dinner at Steam Sia Smile Oct 24, 2012

I was around the vicinity with my friend when we happened to walk past Steam Sia restaurant and stopped for awhile to take a look. The first thing that caught our attention was the old and antique display items found at the front of the restaurant. What intrigued us further was when we entered to take a peek, we were pleasantly surprised to find that the restaurant was nicely decorated with various antique items that certainly belonged to our parents era.

Here's a photo of some of the antique decorations:

Another photo showing their collections of classic cameras:

Impressed by the efforts the restaurant spent in decorating their interior and also slightly famished from our long shopping day, we decided to give it a try and have our dinner there. As we looked through their menu, we realised that they served chinese food, western food, starters, salads and dessert. Although some of the food looks really tempting to order, we decided to order 2 sets of Nasi Goreng Istimewa as it was one of the slightly more affordable dish as we do not want to spend too much at a new restaurant until we had ascertain how's the taste of their cooking was like. 1 set of Nasi Goreng Istimewa cost $8.90 and consist of prawn, chicken wing, achar and rice.

Here's how it looks like:

When the food was served to us, our first impression was that the serving size seem little, considering that it cost us $8.90 per set. However when I savored my first taste of the rice, what strike me was the strong and yummy fragrance of fried rice that smelled and tasted heavenly. I am not sure if the leaf at the bottom of the plate helps to bring out the fragrance of the fried rice or it is merely a decoration item. I must admit that all my negative feelings that arose from the initial impression of the small serving portion instantly dissipated as I happily tucked into my meal and forgive the restaurant for giving such a small portion to us. To me, if the food taste great although the serving portion is little, I am still able to accept it. I rather eat food that tasted great but in small portions that food that tasted mediocre but in huge portions.

The chicken wing, sitting innocuously at a corner of my plate, seem so "normal". But I was deeply wrong when I sank my teeth and took my first bite at my chicken wing. I am unsure how to describe the taste as it is an intricate mixture of some herb taste with some saltiness with some other taste that I could not recognized at that moment. But all in all, I certainly liked how the chicken wing was cooked.

For the achar, it tasted normal. Besides, I am not a strong fan of achar. The 2 sambal prawns tasted normal too, nothing special about it.

As for the ambiance of the restaurant, other than the nicely decorated vintage items, it could have been better if the restaurant can play some vintage music, to add to the mood.

Would I visit this restaurant to eat for a second time? Maybe yes, maybe no. For yes, it would be because the item we ordered tasted great, so we assumed the rest of the food available in their menu should taste equally as great too. As for no, it would be attributed to their small serving portion. Both my friend and I still felt hungry after we finished our meal but we decided not to order another dish, fearing that the portion size will be small again. Instead, we opted to fill our stomach at another eatery nearby.

For the prices that they charged for normal food like curry chicken, Assam fish, fish and chips, salmon etc, if they increase the serving portion size by a little bit, I will certainly return on another day to try out their other dishes found in the menu. But given the small portion served, this will be a likely factor we will consider if we are looking to have a filling meal. But if we are looking to have a yummy meal that tasted great, this would definitely be one of the places that I will recommend to my friends, if their goal is to enjoy tasting great yummy food.
