Operating hours at First Thai is relatively short, and is packed with people most of the time! No reservation allowed, so come early if you want to avoid queuing.
Basil Chicken - Spicy, yet flavorful!
Green Curry - Very rich and creamy. Heavy with coconut base...a little less generous would had been perfect for me.
Panda Chicken - Fragrant and chunky, couldn't ask for more!
Phad Thai - One of the better ones around Singapore. Semi-wet and gooey (that's how I describe and prefer), balanced on the sweetness and generous with their garnishing.
Sea Bass in Thai Sauce - Some protein for our muscles! Very delicious and appetizing gravy/soup and the fish was fresh!
Overall, First Thai was priced a little above average but with good portions and taste. I guess that even things out.

The bf and I were roaming around City Hall deciding what to have for dinner. We decided to have Saveur as it was just nearby. When we arrived, we were placed on the waiting list and we were told that it would be a 30-45 minutes wait. Just a few days ago, I was googling on cheap and affordable thai food and Jai Thai appeared on the list. We almost settled for Jai Thai but we did not because we saw First Thai just a few shops further down.

It was full house and there were people waiting for tables too. Thankfully we managed to get a table the moment we were there.

Thai Iced Tea $3
It was really sweet but the taste was great when the ice melted. There is something about thai iced tea that makes it so special and it is a drink that I must order whenever I visit thai eateries. The thai cuisine experience is never complete without thai iced tea!

Green Curry Chicken $8
It would certainly taste better if it was served hotter. The chicken cubes in the watery green curry with texture almost like soup could not be seen if I did not scoop them up for a picture. The green curry was not at all spicy and it was sweet - good to complement with white rice.

Seafood Tom Yum Soup $8
The heavenly combination of hot and sour flavours beautifully overwhelmed my tastebuds the moment I had my first sip. There were sliced button mushrooms, a slice of fish, sotongs and some prawns in it. This is supposed to be an individual portion but it is good to share between 2.

Spicy Lemon Fish $30
While we were waiting for our table, I saw the table next to us having this fish and it looked fresh so we ordered it. There were a few varieties to choose from - spicy garlic fish, fried fish and so on. When we placed our orders, the waitress was surprised and asked me who had told me to order this dish. When CC asked her for recommendations, she said that we had ordered all of their popular dishes. The fish was really big, too big for 2 people to finish it all. The fish meat was so soft and tender, possibly one of the best I had eaten. Their gravy was more sour than spicy. I still prefer Bali Thai's rendition of their spicy lemongrass gravy but First Thai's fish definitely wins Bali Thai hands down.

Service was friendly and I like the no-frills environment and ambience too. There are pictures of Elvis Presley and pictorial vintage decorations on the walls which, although I could not find any link to Thai cuisine, appreciate the sight of them.

If you are looking for relatively affordable and good Thai food, check out First Thai.

Place was very crowded when we reached but the staff was very nice, she opened up a table at the outside of the restaurant for us. We had a few dishes to share. Tastes sweet and brings out the taste of the spring rolls. Had the crispy golden mushroom, the cook fried it well. We like it as it didn't taste oily. One of the must go thai restaurants!

P/S: Restaurant closes after lunch hours and opens again for dinner, so be sure to check the opening hours before visiting!

This Thai restaurant is at the row of low shophouse. It isn't really furnished nicely as compared to those in retail mall. But the food is surprisingly good. The fried rice is not too oily like those normal ones, and the portion for the large sized one is really big. Prawns and sotong are fresh as well. I really liked their deep fried golden mushroom as it's not too oily and seasoned nicely.

Basil Leaves Fried with Pork/Chicken
Although I do not like basil leaves due to its strong taste, but this dish is quite well cooked that balanced off the taste of the leaves.

Deep Fried Fish
Although quite crispy on the outside, but the meat is still quite juicy.

Total amount costs $84 for 3 persons.

Had a gathering with friends at First Thai, yet again!I love thai food, and first thai is certainly one of the more popular Thai food outlet in Singapore. Be prepared to wait especially on a Friday. We ordered a Thai cuisine staple, Pineapple Fried Rice (S$7) which was mediocre at best. Nothing fantastic to make me wanna come all the way here for. It was rather dry and bland, and if I'm not wrong, it was basically rice with some raisins, pineapple, cashew nuts and pork floss.

We also had the Thai Green Curry (S$8) which was one of the better dishes among the 3 items we had. It tasted rather authentic, especially the brinjal which soaks up the aroma of the basil leaves and curry. This green curry isn't overly spicy, and it did help moisten the dryness of the fried rice.

The tom Yum Goong (S$7) was really really spicy, or perhaps it could be the extreme heat outside deluding my impression of it. They were generous with their seafood and the bowl for one was crowded with sotong, slice fish and lots of mushroom. This bowl packs a potent punch of spice and heat!!

Fresh with the memory of Bangkok's excellent Thai food and armed with a craving for Phad Thai, I headed down to First Thai at Purvis Street, which purportedly serves up authentic Thai food at reasonable prices.

The place sits right at the front of Purvis Street, making it easy to find and plays neighbours to Yet Con, which is next door and Chin Chin just across the road. Decor is very coffeeshop like save for the nice green olden style windows that look out to the main road. There is no airconditioning at this eatery so be prepared to sweat it out on a hot day. If the place is full, you'll probably have to share a table with someone or queue up outside the shop. Do note that you will not be seated until everyone in your group is present.

Tom Yam Soup Individual Serving - This is one of the better tom yam soups that I've tried in Singapore and at $7 a pop, it really isn't too expensive given the amount of ingredients in it. Light and sourish with a tinge of spiciness. But I would have preferred it a little spicier. And thats coming from someone whose spice tolerance level is rather low.

Pandan Chicken - Ok I got to admit that this isn't exactly cheap, at $8 for 4 bite sized pieces of pandan chicken. The chicken, though nice and juicy, didn't exactly wow me probably because of its rather mild taste. There was no burst in the mouth melody of flavours that I experienced while eating it in Bangkok. But still a nice eat nevertheless.

Phad Thai ($8)- One of the highly recommended dishes and purportedly one of the best in Singapore, the Phad Thai was actually quite good. Lightly sweet with a firm and chewy texture. However, it was a little too wet as compared to what I had in Bangkok. The ubiquitous dried shrimps were also missing. I know that dried shrimps are optional but they give an added texture and introduce a much appreciated salty dimension to the dish. Personally I still prefer the Phad Thai from Sweet Salty Spicy Food Market & Thai Canteen.

The cost of food sufficient for 1 pax stood at $23 without taxes, which is still acceptable given the quality of food. However, drinks cost me an additional $8 which is terribly expensive. $3 for a glass of coconut juce, $4 if you want less ice. 50 cents for warm water and 50 cents for ice only. So technically if you wanted ice water, it will be $1/cup. Theres the more expensive option of bottled water though, starting at $2 (without ice). Sorry but I think its a rip off, especially when its only a coffeeshop. If I ever visit again, I'll be sure to bring my own water.
