read about Osaka Ohsho a while ago and have been wanting to try it since it is at the convenient location of Raffles City. However, having witnessed the lunch time queues around the area, including the ones at namnam noodle bar, I thought it was probably a better idea to try it during a non-work day so I had the opportunity to try it last labour day.

For people who may not have heard of Osaka Ohsho, it is established in 1969 as a gyoza specialist, and the menu now includes Japanese-Chinese favourites such as mapo tofu, egg plant with minced meat and black vinegar fried chicken. Today, Osaka Ohsho has over 300 outlets in Japan, Hong Kong, Thailand, Korea and now Singapore.

Needless to say, gyoza is their specialty and you can find that all their set meals come with either a small serving of 3 or 6 gyoza. I love gyoza so i chose the eggplant set with 6 gyozas. Oh and btw, im also a sucker for chi-jap fusion food.. =)

While the eggplant was very tasty (a tad oily) and goes well with rice, our focus and mission today is on the gyoza! It looked very promising with one side very nicely panfried and the other side steamed; my only complaint is that it is not juicy enough! The gyoza filling with a mixture of cabbage, ginger, garlic and 3 kinds of pork wrapped in special wonton wrapper, was skilfully grilled to a deliciously golden brown crisp on one side but seriously lacks moisture. If you ask me, try the at cuppage, it ranks top for me for the moment. The filling is somehow more juicy and you can taste the freshness of the ingredients, though the done-ness of the skin cant be compared to Osaka Ohsho.

My friends ordered the salmon set and the tofu hamburger set. I think the salmon portion looks a bit pathetic but the tofu hamburger came in the same kind of sauce as their ‘emu rice’, and has an egg omelette on it.

I would say generally the food is tasty and quite value for money. Seriously, I would say i have no problem eating a dozen gyoza from here, which only cost $3.90 for 6.

Osaka Osho translates to 'The King of Gyoza in Osaka' and as you would expect, the restaurant boasts of handmade gyoza as their specialty. The filling is wrapped in the restaurant's special wonton wrapper which is much thinner than what I usually get elsewhere, letting you bite into the juicy insides without having to get through too much dough. Loved the golden brown sear on the gyoza!

To go with my gyoza, I had the fried chicken. Served in bite-sized chunks, the crispy fried chicken were literally nuggets of indulgences, with that aftertaste of ginger that really wakes up the palate.

I would go further to recommend that diners pick up the restaurant's offer for additional chilli oil at just $1 for a small servings. A blend of chilli, some herbs and spice as well as chilli oil, the concoction was reminiscent of the seasoning that went with instant noodle brand, Chu Qian Yi Ding. For those who usually have a hard time finishing their bowl of rice, maybe this would help!

At $10.90 for a set meal including a main course, gyoza, rice and miso soup, I'd think that Osaka Ohsho offers a great value deal. So if you're looking for a good place in town for even dinner, give it a go!

Toufu and hamburger steak set costs $13.90 as well. Comes with 4 pieces of gyoza, rice and soup. Before I ordered, the staff actually reminded us that hamburger steak consists of pork and beef. The hamburger steak was soft and I would said its just normal. Not that wonderful as I thought.

Service
Staff is rather patient, though we have not fully decide what to eat, she stands by my side to wait and when asked for recommendations, she is so helpful.

Ambience
Shocked to see that its not full house during saturday lunch hours. Aplenty of seats for us.

Price
Pricing is still ok taking into consideration the location and cuisine.

We had ordered a Fried rice set (fried rice + soup + 6 gyozas) and a Pork Cutlet Toji to share.

Food service here is prompt and good. It took a few minutes for the dishes to be served.

The fried rice was very fragrant and very tasty too! Absolutely loved it. I might visit the place again just for the fried rice.
The gyoza, I could not tell if they were really hand-made or mass produced in the factory. There was nothing extraordinary about the taste or presentation or fillings. In our opinion, they were like most gyozas we find in other Japanese eateries around the island.

When the Pork cutlet arrived, we wondered if we had ordered the wrong dish. It was like a bowl of egg soup, with slight sightings of some meat, served in a claypot. It was soupy, wet. A little too eggy for us.

Well, the visit was disappointing as I was expecting slightly more than what I got.

Mabo Tofu ($7.90)

Osaka Ohsho specialises in Chuka dishes, which are Chinese cuisine adapted to suit the Japanese palates –therefore you can find a range of familiar Chinese home-style dishes such as Mabo Tofu.

This Sichuan favourite is redolent of intense flavours derived from fermented black beans, chilli oil, peppercorns and garlic. It didn’t wow me though; I felt that it was lacking in unami.

Fuwatoro Tenshin Han ($9.90)

The Fuwatoro Tenshin Han deserves special mention.

What was lacking in the aforementioned Mabo Tofu, the Fuwatoro Tenshin Han totally made up for it. Dive into the sunny-yellow ‘dome’ of fluffy omelette to reveal steaming Japanese rice.

Only Koshihikari rice from the Toyoma region in Japan is used at Osaka Ohsho. Grown with melted snow and fertile soil, the texture of the rice has a nice balance of sticky and fluffy.

Ban Ban Chicken ($5.90)

The Ban Ban Chicken immediately reminds me of our local chicken rice dish upon my first bite.

The distinct fragrance of goma (sesame) wafts through each successive bite. This cold appetiser of thinly sliced steamed chicken – tender and succulent, drizzled with goma sauce – makes for a great start to a meal.

Fried Chicken with Negi Sauce ($5.90)

The Fried Chicken with Negi Sauce is another enjoyable dish that I wouldn’t mind a second helping. Crisp strips of meat are coated with a delectable spring onion sauce.

Double Cooked Pork ($9.90)

The Double Cooked Pork is commonly known as hui guo rou (or literally, meat that has been ‘returned’ to the wok). This name describes the dual-cooking method of simmering the meat, then stir-frying it.

Although I loved the flavours and ‘wok fragrance’ of the pork, I found the pork-to-vegetable ratio to be undesirable –non-veggie lovers will find it a chore picking the greens out.

Black Vinegar Fried Chicken Set ($14.90)

The Black Vinegar Fried Chicken is available as a set ($14.90) – accompanied by miso soup, gyoza and Japanese rice – or as an a la carte item ($10.90).

I didn’t care much for the miso soup; it is pretty bland. It might be because they didn’t want the soup to overpower the main dish (the chicken), or to overwhelm the palate with too many heavy flavours.

The Black Vinegar Fried Chicken is quite heavy on taste, and is best enjoyed with Japanese rice. Deep-fried chicken pieces are stir-fried with lotus roots, capsicum and eggplant, well coated in a Japanese vinegar sauce that boasts a balanced harmony of sweetness, tanginess and savouriness.

Osaka Ohsho Gyoza (6 for $3.90, 12 for $7.80)

The highlight is definitely their signature handmade gyoza (meat dumplings), skilfully pan-fried to a delicious crisp on one side yet tantalisingly moist within.

To achieve consistency in texture and the right golden-brown crispness, only customised Osaka Ohsho grills that control the temperature at a constant 95 degrees C are used.

The succulent filling is made with a combination of tender pork shoulder and leg cuts, as well as finely minced cabbage, garlic and ginger, for a balanced medley of textures and flavours.

Their very own delicately thin wanton skin is freshly made daily using Japanese flour.

Triumphing from the rigorous kitchen trials under Japan’s discerning palates, I very much have to agree, upon consumption, that their title of ‘Osaka’s King of Gyoza’ is well deserved.

Must try!

For starters, have their most famous item on the menu, Gyoza ($7.80 for 12 pieces). What makes their version different from the rest is the skin, which is made from thin wanton skin prepared fresh daily with Japanese flour. Its filling is made of tender pork shoulder, leg cuts, cabbage, garlic, and ginger.

I had the ramen set ($11.90) that comes with 6 gyozas! The Japanese couple who were sitting beside us also ordered the same set. I like how big the portion was- initially I was wary of the portion since the bowl of ramen came with half a braised egg and 2 big juicy pieces of meat. The noodles were extremely springy- just what I like and I could hear the Japanese slurping happily too! The vingear goes perfectly with the gyozas as there was a tinge of sourness that complemented the meat stuffing. I aooreciated how the gyoza was pan fried to a nice golden brown colour and the skin was not too thick
Definitely worth the money!

My boyfriend had ordered the crispy chicken stew set ($13.90) that came with 2 pieces of gyoza. The stew came with a generous serving of stir fried onions and chicken chunks. The chicken was juicy and tender too.

In terms of service, despite the huge crowd, the service was very efficient. Food was promptly served and kudos to the waiters who answered to our enquires when we clarified with them with regards to the menu. They were also fast to provide us with additional napkins and the refill of the hot green tea when we prompted them to do so. I will definitely go back there another time with my friends- for the excellent affordable Japanese food as well as the notable service! Cheers!
