My (and even my family) favorite Japanese
restaurant in Singapore has launched their FIRST Kyoto fair featuring the
award-winning KYOTO BEEF that has done its ancestors proud by clinching the TOP
prize at the 61st Kinki Tokai Hokuriku Union Beef Cattle Kyoshin Association in
2014.

Really? Kyoto Beef? How good can it be when
it's not even one of the Top 3 Wagyu Beef in Japan? Yes, I had those questions
in mind too but when I had a bite of the Kyoto Beef, I nearly wanted to flip
the tables. (Just kidding) Trust me, this breed of cow is just as elite as the
vegetables and tofu produce from Kyoto.

Wagyu purists might disagree but I do
not care. This is definitely my ideal cattle because of the regular marbling of
fats make this a balanced cut that is tender yet not too fatty. Kobe beef felt
like swallowing a whole chunk of butter and I couldn't proceed after one. But
not for this.

The one-week Kyoto fair is run by Okamoto
san, an experienced chef with a restaurant in Kyoto. ALL ingredients, from the
pickles in the appetizers to the strawberries in dessert are all imported from
Kyoto.

There is ala carte menu but the
lunch/dinner course is much more highly recommended for the full quality
experience. The price ranges from $28 to $100, which is jaw-droppingly
reasonable for the excellent standards of the meal. Here is the recap of what
the meal:

But that's not the end. The dessert brought
the Kyoto meal to another climax. Matcha Fondue. Yes, dark green liquid served
WARM with Kyoto Strawberries, Warabi Mochi, Matcha Cake and Shiratama Dango.
This was so ridiculously good that I licked my fondue cup clean.
Blissful.

The beef, the tofu, the matcha. Every ingredient
played their respective role in he course. Looks like this meal has set a high
standard for 2015 and honestly speaking, it's difficult to find another place
in Singapore that can beat this in terms of value and quality.

Decided to try their Black Pig Shabu Shabu Ramen this time as it seemed to be their specialty. It was just lightly brushed with teriyaki sauce so you could still taste the sweetness of the squid itself, very yummy

I'm really picky when it comes to ramen because I find that most soup bases are too thick for my liking hence it gets jelat very quickly for me. That's why I like Tampopo's pork & seafood soup base. I find that the seafood helps to lighten the taste hence I don't get sick of the soup. I actually drank most of it whereas at other restaurants I usually find that I've to force myself to finish the food because of how jelat they make me feel. The egg was well marinated and the yolk was the perfect semi-solid golden orange.

Honestly I can't taste the difference between normal pig and black pig haha, but anyhow the gyozas were pretty good! I thought it looked a little small but it turned out to be ok. The filling was nice and juicy and the skin was thin so it didn't taste super starchy. However I would have preferred if the base was pan-fried till it's crispier.

Normally for tonkatsu, it will be slightly on the dry side but not the ones at Tampopo. I guess the use of the loin from the black pig really is more tender than the loin from a normal pig.

The salmon sashimi is sliced very thickly and it is served on a bowl of ice to maintain its coldness and freshness. The salmon sashimi, while being thickly cut (as seen from the photo) and fresh, is rather expensive since it is $15 for 6. I would probably skip ordering this next time and save the $15 for desserts. Do try the black pig tonkatsu if you haven’t!

I love their Black Pig Ramen series - especially the Shabu Ramen or Deluxe Shabu Ramen. Note that I was, and never am a fan of pork - but black pig tastes so succulent, tender, lean and the flavor comes with hints of sweetness that totally enhances the sensation when eating a bowl of Black Pig Ramen. The soup is tasty, needless to say. The Ramen noodles they use is also different - springy, slim, and somewhat curly.

My next favorite item from Tampopo has to be their Wafu Steak - think tender, succulent, chewy and absolutely sumptuous seared beef slices marinated / sprinkled with salt, and melts in the mouth.

The unique trigger point for this dish was their perfectly Japanese braised egg, outlay was wholly-cooked with egg yolk still remained runny. Thick broth with a little slice of butter added, the richness was great for my liking. Fragrant of chicken and seaweed in soup, the saltiness was fine without getting thirsty after drinking it. Noodle wise, it was springy at just right texture. Price at approximately $17.00, somebody may find it quite expensive yet it was reasonable for me. Do try the Ramen if you get a chance to drop by at Tampopo, never regret.

As usual ordered my Pork loin yanagawa --thick pieces of lean pork in batter and egg over it... salty, oil, crispy, filling, yummy.. all at the same time! Comes with a side salad that is apparently refillable.

Angmokia had the deluxe black pig Shabu Ramen, which he loved. Soup was not too spicy that it masked the taste of the broth and having a whole egg was a nice touch for ramen-egg lovers. Though he found that the thin slices of black pig though good, was nothing very spectacular.

One of my favourites that I will return and return!

We arrived at the restaurant at 1130am on a weekday. We were their first customer that day. Before long, the 2nd and third group of customers arrived. We were able to place our orders fairly quickly as we knew what to order before hand. We were served the green tea and the ramen without much delay.

The partner ordered the Original Kyushu Ramen $13.50. Besides the Kyushu ramen which was thin and hard, the bowl of ramen was served with tamago, black fungus, fish roe, soy sauce pork slice (char siew) and spring onions The Char Siew with a decent fat to lean meat ratio provided a melt in the mouth sensation.

The pork broth which required two days to made was made from pork bone! The pork broth was light, milky and tasty. I felt that it was a tad too salty. Nevertheless, it was still one of the better Japanese ramen around and at $13.50, it was value for money!

I ordered the Deluxe Tampopo Black Pig Shabu Ramen $16.30 which was served with tampopo, corns, bamboo shoots, slices of black pig and lettuce. It was topped with lots of chilli flakes and some spring onions. The flavour of the chilli flakes did not overwhelm the taste of the pork bone broth. The broth was tasty yet forgiving. Compared to the broth from the Original Kyushu Ramen, I thought that this was more flavourful. The ramen was well cooked, retained its springiness and was not hard. It was a joy slurping the ramen along with the broth.

As the name black pig shabu suggests, the black pig was sliced thinly (paper thin) with little or no marination so that one can taste the original taste of the meat. Each piece had the right balance of fats and meat and was so soft and tender that they provided a melt in the mouth sensation. If only they gave more slices of the black pig shabu. Oishii!!! Black Pig aka Berkshire Pig is the oldest breed of pig known originating from Reading-Berkshire in England. It is the highest prized pork in Japan and regarded as the best quality of pork in the world.

The Tamago (Japanese half boiled egg) was excellent. A firm and nice consistent dark brown colour on the outside. On the inside, it was soft and the egg yolk was runny - just the way a Tamago should be like. If you are keen to make your very own Tamago, you can click here for the recipe.

Overall, I felt that Tampopo's ramen was as good as Santouka's! Besides the dishes mentioned in this post, the Tonkatsu Ramen, Scoop Cake and Matcha Chiffon Cake are worth a try too. Service wise, the staff were prompt in refilling the green tea and the food got served pretty fast. To be fair, I should add that as we arrived at 1130am on a weekday, there was virtually no crowd in the restaurant.

On 7th August 2013, I brought my overseas friend to Tampopo to celebrate her birthday because she loves Japanese food. I had an unpleasant experience but i will start off with the food review. In summary, the food was serviceable but pricey. We ordered katsu platter and some salmon sashimi and sushi platter. The Foie gras katsu and mentaiko katsu taste really bland. Meat is slightly tough. If i want nice katsu, I'll go to tonkichi or Saboten. Sashimi / sushi platter was pathetically small but alright in freshness. 4 slices of salmon regular, 2 slice of belly, 1 ikura (really 1 only?!), 4 maki and 4 cali style maki if I remember correctly. For two person, it could qualify as an appetizer.Haven't tried their ramen in a long time but if I want an overall decent japanese tasting experience, I'll go to Sushi-tei or Itacho instead.

Now about the unpleasant experience. We came about 9pm. At 10pm, they turned off the air-con. At 1010pm I went to the gent's. Your closing time is 1030pm. I came back to the restaurant only to find that the shutters had been pulled down and my friend was standing outside the restaurant crying. When I left the restaurant for the gent's, my friend overheard comments that it was very late and everyone wanted to go home early but we are the ones holding them back. She also overheard comments about them betting to see who can ask us my friend to leave and subsequently one of the staff approached my friend, mentioning that they are closing and my friend has to leave now. My friend requested for more time as she not finished the food. The staff refused to grant more time so my friend requested to have the food packed. The staff then mentioned that they will be calling the guards if she does not leave immediately.

After hearing my friend's experience, I went over to knock on the shutters. I requested to see the manager which he mentioned has already gone home and refused to give me the contact. The staff in conversation with me advised me to feedback on Facebook instead. After much persistence, he passed me the contact of the manager and I left. Subsequently, I have tried to contact the manager's number but the number is actually no longer in use. Faye and I are very appalled at what happened and I am very upset with that the staff on shift. I hope the management look into this issue and investigate my bad experience.

Another main bulk of the attraction would be their ramen. Mainly two styles of preparation. Hokkaido and Kyushu. I won't be going through the differences between the two since I am no ramen expert to begin with.

Deluxe is the way of life when it comes to the Black Pig Shabu Ramen. Extremely flavorful broth. Personally, the main attraction is still the Black Pig lying in wait. Tender and chewy but I have to say. Such stuffs are meant to enjoy at the start. Never leave the meat to the last. By then, it will be tough and laborious to enjoy. The egg were special though. Runny yolk encased in a hard-boiled egg. Impressive!

Thick slabs of charsiu just waiting to be indulge in... What are you waiting for? Pick up your chopsticks! This Kyushu CharSiu Ramen is by no means comparable to the shabu ramen since it's a category all by itself. Slightly on the saltier end of the note though...

As I have proclaimed. Tampopo has been my favorite place to go GaGa over Japanese food. Sashimi that's seems almost straight from a Sake or Maguro airflown from the markets of Japan. Does it get any fresher?

I don't think so...

Surely you might disagree since there are other places such as Marutama or Ippudo which fare far more better than Tampopo's rendition. I can't really put a gauge since I am no ramen expert but given the portions and the price tags that Tampopo has to offer, it's definitely a better choice.

Tampopo's grilled offerings such as the saba fish are also delicious and serve as excellent starters to the meal...Definitely better than most Japanese restaurants out there...

Nevertheless, it's a good place for ramen craving...!!

I thought Tampopo will serve set lunch like normal restaurant, but to my surprise, it didn't.There were banners hanging outside the restaurant and showing the every week special menu, and I went to try the black pork yasai ramen, $16.80. My friend told me Tampopo was famous for its black pork, and since it's in the special menu, so without any hesitation me and my friend chose the same dish. The ramen was the thinner type noodle, and soup looked white, maybe milky? I had no idea and never ask

There were banners hanging outside the restaurant and showing the every week special menu, and I went to try the black pork yasai ramen, $16.80. My friend told me Tampopo was famous for its black pork, and since it's in the special menu, so without any hesitation me and my friend chose the same dish. The ramen was the thinner type noodle, and soup looked white, maybe milky? I had no idea and never ask. There were plenty of cabbage and mushroom in it. The most delicious part was the black pork. The golden crispy black pork was very juicy. Not over fried, but just perfect. It was placed separately above the noodle on a net.

I ordered another salmon sashimi at $22. Though it was pricey, but trust me, the salmon was very fresh and was quite a big and thick piece. While we were eating half way, the waiter came to us with a small basket telling us that was a lucky draw! Everyone will win something ( either big or small prize) So we were lucky enough to draw a free Ramen and a bottle of Asahi beer! So one of our ramen was totally free! Hooray!

We were too full for desserts, so ordered one orange jelly to share. The food overall was good.
