Cozy little place
Tiong Hoe Specialty Coffee
2014-08-24
Tiong Hoe Speciality Coffee is a hidden gem at Stirling Road, but it's no stranger to the neighbourhood as it's been around for 50 years now. The owner, Mr Tan, is insisted on the traditional method of roasting 100% pure coffee and providing quality coffee beans to households and food and beverage establishments. Only just few months ago they decided on exploring the cafe concept, while still maintaining the wholesales/retail business. It's still not a fully deco cafe I must say, but you will definitely feeling cozy being in this tiny little place. It looks real and sincere. By just walking around, you will gain so much insight about the coffee processing. Tiong Hoe Speciality Coffee carries coffee beans from different regions of the world. Different beans are well kept in the respective drawers and labeled with descriptions. Coffee lovers who are interested to know more about their cup of pleasure can have a good read. What's more, Barista Juliana is so friendly and generous to share with you her experience and love about coffee. After the brief sharing about the coffee origins from different continents, Juliana went on to demonstrate the beans roasting process. What attracts me the most is this antique looking coffee roaster, which apparently working perfectly fine. The irresistible aroma of the roasted beans filled the whole cafe, very pleasant smell. The highlight of the coffee appreciation session is to learn the arts and science of making coffee. Juliana is very enthused with her sharing of useful tips and simple technique of brewing the perfect cup. Don't worry if you have very little knowledge about coffee, ask her anything and she is more than willing to answer with big smiley. That really makes one feel extra relax in enjoying the cuppa. It's a very informative session on coffee, from weighing the beans, grinding, to the skills of brewing coffee (the water temperature, the way of pouring water if using the V60 pour over system), smelling the aroma, and finally the tasting and identifying the variety hint of flavours (nutty, floral, spices etc). Apart from the specialty coffee, Juliana is also good in brewing the expresso-based coffee. However, there is no sign board for price if you realized! You just tips after enjoying the coffee, whatever price you reckon it worths. Sounds cool hey! I personally love the piccolo latte for the aroma, the silky froth and the full bodied flavour. And of course, not to forget the pretty latte art too! :) I really enjoyed my time at Tiong Hoe Speciality Coffee immensely. Coffee drinking is simply about pleasure, the sincerity of Juliana in engaging the coffee lovers will make one feels warm. I would say, a visit to Tiong Hoe Speciality Coffee is worth your time! …查看更多

Awesome meal with gorgeous view!
Quayside Fish Bar & Bistro
2014-06-27
Quayside Fish Bar & Bistro (QSFB) is located in Sentosa Cove, with the splendid waterfront view just in front of the door step. Slow stroll to the restaurant in such a grogeous sunset setting will definitely make you happy and improve your appetite I reckon. The interior design is minimalist, with a big mirror hanging on the wall to create a spacious feeling. Love the wine rack for sure! That sets the dinner mood just right. To kick start the meal, Rekorderlig Cider is a good choice. The light alcoholic drink with a hint of sweetness is very easy to drink. You can choose to pair it with strawberry, lime or wildberries. Mine was the strawberries + blueberries, I purposely left the strawberries to the last, let it soaked up the Cider before eating them. Try it, you'll love it. Salad of The Day is designed according to what's fresh on that particular day. Ours was the Scallops, Tiger Prawns, served with Yellow Frisee. The seafood is really fresh here, I particularly like the firm texture of the Tiger Prawns. Another starter, we have the Tuna Tataki. One of my favourite dish of the night. The sliced tuna was seared very briefly over a hot flame, giving you a charred outer layer but maintaining the tenderness of fresh sashimi in the middle. Topped with avruga carviar, the tuna slices were resting on a bed of salad, consisting of pear crumble and wakame seaweed. You will have a sweet after taste from the yuzu and caramelized onion sauce, a pleasant feeling. Main course was the QSFB's Signature Chilli Crab Linguine. The "very normal" looking dish was definitely a surprise! Topped with a deep-fried soft-shell crab, the linguine was cooked with chilli crab sauce and generous amount of fresh crab meat! You get both the sweetness and spiciness, very well-balanced. Thumbs up! The Baked Barramundi was served with pumpkin puree, red wine poached pear and a dish of lobster butter sauce. The fish was very fresh, although not as tender as I was expected. However, the rich lobster butter sauce has won my heart. It's very flavourful, slightly more savoury than what you usually get from the loster bisque. Main course was paired with a cocktail - Sex at Quayside. It's a mix of prosecco, peach schnapps, cranberry juice and orange juice, a relatively strong drink with a kick! A scumptious meal won't be completed if it's without dessert hey! We had the Homemade Tiramisu. The well-balanced coffee and liquor taste was to my liking, it's moist, but how I wish it can be more creamy and rich bodied. We had the Chocolate Dreams (vodka, kahlua, cocoa brown and milk) to go with the Tiramisu. Not overly strong, just the perfect closing for a wonderful meal. QSFB is definitely a good place for chillax. Fresh and yummy seafood, very nice drinks, and gorgeous view! Cheers! :) …查看更多

Costa Coffee
2014-03-01
I first had costa coffee when I was in UK. Didn't like it in particular as I reckon their coffee is too diluted. Happened to come across costa coffee again in Singapore, and decided to give it another go. I'm glad that I did, because I'm totally in love with their cappuccino. Aromatic tasty, bold in taste, leaving a good palate behind. Their layers carrot cake is superb too. Very nutty and not overly sweet! Must try.…查看更多

Below average
Louver Cafe Lounge
2014-03-01
You can get a set meal at $22++, which consists of a salad, soup of the day, main course, desserts and a cup of tea/ coffee. Sounds like a big bargain seeing the amount of food that you'll be getting. However, the food quality is kind of below average, not to mention about the service. For salad, the dressing is overwhelmed! Too much and too rich in taste. I can't taste the freshness of the greens. The deep-fried bread slice on top is just way too oily. Soup of the day is mushroom soup, made from soup powder, and served with a bread roll that's being microwaved. Too 'elastic' to be chewed off. Main course wise, seafood pasta tastes descent though the presentation could be slightly better. Chicken chop is Ok. Served with crispy hash brown, this is properly the best dish of the night. However, the side dish (salad with too much dressing) is a spoilt. Dessert is replaced by fruit plate. And served with the bitter tea/ coffee. Not pleased. …查看更多

NamNam Noodle Bar
2013-12-16
NamNam Noodle Bar is a very crowded eatery. The tables are arranged very close to each other, and the waiting queue can be pretty long too. You need to order the food at the counter, pay first, then take a pair of chopsticks to your seat and wait for the food. My recommendation is to have the Pho beef combination ($9.90), where you get to taste everything in one go. However, of all the ingredients, I reckon the beef balls taste the best. Iced coffee with condensed milk ($2.50) tastes authentic too, thick and cooling. …查看更多

Authentic kolo mee
Sarawak Kolo Mee
2013-12-16
You could always spot a long waiting queue in front of this kolo mee stall, especially during the lunch rush hour, the queue can easily be 20 - 30 people. However, it definitely worth the wait. The kolo is authentically good. It's filled with lots of ingredients: pork ribs are nicely stewed, very soft texture and rich in flavour. The char siew could be slightly dry, but the taste of the noodles as a whole is simply yummy. …查看更多

Gourmet coffee
DeConti Caffe & Gelato
2013-11-03
This little open-concept cafe serves good gourmet coffee in general. They are famous for the flavored coffee, such as pistachio coffee!  You won't get enough of it. On my forth visit, I have decided to go for something simple - milky espresso. It's one shot of espresso topped with milk froth (warm or cold). Love the intense coffee taste, strong but not bitter. Thumbs up for the silky smooth froth too! Pleasant experience.…查看更多

Expected better
Palio
2013-07-13
We went to Palio on a busy Friday night, where all the indoor seats were taken, left only the outdoor. Staffs were too busy to attend to every table, hence service wasn't too satisfying. Indoor is equipped with an open-concept kitchen, where diners can watch how their pizza is made. Dinner kicked off with the complimentary buns served with the fresh-made tomato-like dip. Very appetizing, and I love the crispiness of the bun. Porcini soup ($14) is cooked using the Tuscan Porcinin mushroom with thyme cream. Tasted Ok-ly fragrant. Pici Aragosta ($28) is the homemade traditional eggless pasta, with crayfish meat and zucchini. The Italian Saffron pistils cream sauce is so thick, in fact slightly too thick for me. Palio is famous for their wood fired pizza. We ordered the Venere ($34), a tomato-based pizza topped with sauteed mussels and clams, lots of Stracciatella cheese. However, it turns out to be quite disappointing. The pizza could be slightly more flavourful, and it's a bit too cold when served. Dessert wise, we had Tiramisu Originale ($14) and Cioccolato Amaro ($12). Tiramisu tasted pretty good! The espresso coffee steeped ladyfinger biscuits layered with Mascarpone cream cheese! Heaven. On the other hand, cioccolato is the fine chocolate mousse with raspberry ganache, served with the crunchy hazelnut biscuit and chocolate gelato. Not bad, but i have eaten a better one elsewhere. …查看更多

Fresh Seafood
Osia
2013-07-13
Osia has such an innovative a la carte menu that combines Asian influences and western culinary techniques and present them in a fine delighted way. I love the open-kitchen concept as it's such a pleasure to watch the chefs cooking professionally. Seafood Ice Experience ($36) is an eye-opening experience! Each shot contains fresh seafood that married with flavoured shaved ice! Calamansi Mojito Ice with dried scallop, Apple celery ice with salmon trout, pineapple coconut ice with Southern blue fin tuna, mango passionfruit ice with lobster, lychee martini ice with oyster, sour plum vodka ice with sweet prawn! Each and every single one will give you a big surprise! A must try for sure! For main course, I had the Hokkaido Scallop, Wild King Prawn, Cod ($68). All components are cooked just nicely, maintaining the freshness so well. The dish is completed with potato espuma and chips, finally drizzled with the delicious verjus sauce! Awesome! Dessert wise, the Valrhona Hot Chocolate Soup ($22) is heavanly good! The melted dark chocolate pudding is paired with black peppered ice cream and sesame crisp! Sinful yet satisfying! …查看更多

Assorted buns
Yamazaki Boulangerie Chaude
2013-03-15
Quite a few bakery chains in Singapore now is baking the mini buns to cater for customers who love to try more variety of flavours. Yamazaki Boulangerie Chaude is selling five mini buns at $2.95. You can choose three for $1.99. Variety wise, this bakery doesn't as too many of the choices, most of the mini buns are either sausage or ham. I bought five, and my favourite is the sausage cheesy bun. However, the bread texture is a bit hard. …查看更多

Dim Sum
汕頭海鮮
2013-03-15
Swatow is famous for their Teochew cuisine, yet some of their dimsum are actually quite good. Har Gao (Prawn dumpling) ($4) is my all-time favourite. The juiciness of the prawn filling is savoury and of good flavour. The skin's thickness is just right too. I tried their durian dessert for the first time. The crispy pastry has a thick and rich durian paste filling. The aroma of the durian just burst into your mouth upon the first bite. Egg tarts are so-so. Perhaps they weren't warm enough. The egg filling is actually quite silky smooth, Apart from dimsum, one could order dishes from the menu if it's after 11am. We tried Pork liver roll ($10), which is one of the Teochew delicacy. Very strong in liver taste, not my favourite, but I bet it's authentic Teochew flavour. Prawn roll ($10) is good, ingredients are pretty similar with liver roll, except without the organ taste. Swatow handmade tofu ($12) has a strong flavour of egg in the tofu, nice to eat. Cooked with gingko, this dish is simple yet very homely taste. …查看更多

BAKERZIN
2013-03-15
I head over to Bakerzin for dinner the other day, ordering a salad, a soup, as well as a pasta dish. Simple yet good. Waldorf Salad ($11.50) consists of lots of fruits, such as apple, dried cranberries etc. Very light and refreshing. I like their Pumpkin soup ($6.90), rich in pumpkin flavour, smooth texture and very comforting when drinking it hot. Arrabiata linguine ($13.50) is garlicky and spicy. Appetizing flavour, and the tomato paste is very well-seasoned. …查看更多

2013-03-15
I like reading Dian Xiao Er's menu, as they actually made the effort to calculate the calories content of each dishes. Fascinating hey. We first had the Stewed crocodile soup with almonds ($7), which is slightly disappointed. The soup is overly salty and not much of the ingredients seen.Braised mushroom in chinese wine ($10.90), 260kCal, is so tasty! Love the Chinese wine taste so much, flavour fully absorbed by the assorted fresh mushroom, yummy! Chinese spinach in superior stock ($12.30), 330kCal, is quite a classic dish in the Chinese restaurant. The Chinese spinach is served over wolfberries and conpoy sweetened stock. Very well-done. Dong Po Pork ($13.90) is the restaurant's all-time favourite. The pork belly actually melt in your mouth. Very good flavour! However, it's causing 1510kCal intake. Sinful but thumbs up! …查看更多

Good for fun
Nook
2013-03-15
Nook Pancake House is the place that you and your mates will have lots of fun. The selling point of this eatery is their DIY pancakes idea! (1) you get choose either jar or squeezer bottle, then (2) choose pancake batter, (3) choose sides and toppings, and finally (4) create your very own pancakes, any shape you like and have fun!! Nook's Awesome Cheese Burger Soup ($6) is awesome! The soup consists of minced beef, lettuce and cheddar, very creamy cheesy taste, absolutely comforting! Uniquely yummy! Apparently The Rainbow Pancake is the no.1 best seller of the shop. The gorgeous stack is made up from six colourful pancakes, very much like rainbow colours. Different colour represents different flavours. There are original buttermilk, asian pandan, dark chocolate, funky banana and strawberry farm. Their individual flavour miught not distinct enough to be differentiated out easily, but overall speaking, visual wise, it's a lovely dish. The Breakfast Bully ($18) is another no.1 of the shop. It's pretty much everything you can imagine in a American breakfast! Scrambled eggs, bacon, sausage, sauteed mushrooms, baked beans, vine riped tomatoes and brioche. Quite nice as a whole. …查看更多

Breakfast toast
土司工坊
2013-03-13
Apart from the usual toast sets and noodles sets, Toast Box has now serving the new sandwich sets. I tried their Tuna and cucumber set ($3.80) and totally in love with it. The tuna filling is satisfying huge in portion, served with lots of diced cucumber and onion, dressed in mayonnaise sauce. I like the buttery crispy toast too. Bacon and egg set ($3.80) on the other hand, might not be as tasty. The sunny side up is descent, but I reckon the bacon is a little too hard and has this greasy after-taste. Not a fans. …查看更多
