We are back at my favorite pizza place! While this is not authentic Italian fare, but rather, an Americanized pizza restaurant with an Orientalized menu, I still find that they serve the best pizzas. Therefore, cravings and a promotion lured me back to California Pizza Kitchen.
Ever since my last visit here almost a decade ago, I have been back here several more times over the years, bringing different friends to try some of their signature delicacies. California Pizza Kitchen offers a laid-back yet sleek setting for its diners, with smooth wooden tables and a selection of cushy booth seats or the more regal matching chairs.
We began with the obligatory Peking Duck Pizza. Besides having a fluffy, crispy thin crust charred to perfect deliciousness, one could really taste chunks of roasted duck meat. The taste is heightened, and made colorful by melted mozarella cheese atop, the aroma of shitake mushroom slivers, distinctive flavor of leek, splays of sweet dark brown sauce that complemented the duck's flavor, and best of all, I love the strips of cripsy fried wanton skins.
Next, we had the much-missed Kungpao Spaghetti - a classic pasta with Chinese twist and spicy flavor to it. You can choose to have chicken, shrimps or both - we chose both. Look at the fresh, succulent, huge shrimps that literally bounced in the mouths! This pasta dish consists of red hot dried chilli, scallions, garlic flakes, roasted peanuts, kungpao sauce and of course, the meat of choice. The effect? Spiciness tinged with sweetness ensconced in a savoury dish. Every bite was bursting with flavor!

California Kitchen had come out with a new flatbread. There were 3 choices and I chose shaved mushroom and spinach. While waiting for the flatbread to be served, I noticed that the restaurant was dim. There wasn’t many lights were switched on. I waited for 15 minutes to have the flatbread served. The pizza was about a 10 cm long flatbread instead of round. It was about 1 cm thick. Mushroom and spinach were spread on top of the flatbread. It was not very hot and the flatbread was served.

The flat bread costs $11.90. I would not grade highly of the bread.

CPK's Original BBQ Chicken Pizza did not fail to disappoint in terms of flavor, however, I feel that the pizza has sized down either by condiments or size. I can't place it (from my visit a few months before)

Their other house special is the Peking Duck Pizza. The sauce was spot on, but the tortilla chips was a little over the top.

The way they presented the Tiramisu was rather interesting. I feel that they could have added more rum into it.

Chocolate Souffle did not have a very good presentation as it looked rather sunken, but the chocolate was there without being overly overwhelming.

The Red Velvet cake was a generous serving, however, there was something missing to it that made it slightly bland.

There is also a complimentary Birthday Sundae is your birthday is in the month. Do remember to bring your photo ID to get this

The total bill was about $140 SGD for 8 pax.

I was at Forum shopping mall, but I was at a loss on what to eat, so I just decided to try California Pizza Kitchen as there’s a decent crowd, but not to the point whereby there's a long queue of people staring at you pressuring you to finish so they can dine. The staff are very friendly helpful and patient. I ordered Jamaican Jerk Chicken. The thin-crust pizza is well cooked and the ingredients are evenly balanced and flavourful. Everything is just nice.

It has been 3 years since my last visit to California Pizza Kitchen but the kind folks at CPK didn't forget about it and invited me over to try out a couple of their dishes as well as see the new premises.

CPK no longer takes up a dual storey unit at Forum The Shopping Mall. Instead, it has shifted a couple of metres sideways to take up a single storey unit in the same building (It's old premises have apparently been taken up by a Japanese restaurant). The open concept kitchen still remains but seating capacity has been drastically reduced from about 400 pax to roughly 150 pax.

Mediterranean Focaccia - A great way to start off our meal with the focaccia sporting a light and chewy texture with a faint cheesy aftertaste. Good enough to eat on its own but if you are the sort who needs olive oil to go with your bread, there is the Mediterranean dip (olive oil with herbs) provided.

Roasted Duck Breast Salad - I'm not usually a salad person but this one did the trick for me. Tons of fresh greens and edamame beans served with crispy wanton skins in a sweet plum sauce dressing and topped with generous slices of roasted duck breast drizzled with hoisin sauce. Sweet, savoury with a tinge of vegetable rawness all at once. Very nice! Do note that the half portion is big enough for 2 people to share, especially if you are intending to share a main as well.

The Original BBQ Chicken - The classic pizza from CPK, on a new improved dough base which apparently is hand stretched every time a pizza order is made aka stretched to order. And personally, I do like the new crust better. Light and airy whilst retaining its chewiness - good for people who love thicker crusts but loathe chomping down on hard, sometimes burnt crusts. Coupled with generous chicken chunks and BBQ sauce, it made for a pleasant pizza experience.

Red Velvet Cake - I honestly don't see the big hooha behind red velvet cakes in general so while this was pretty decent, I failed to appreciate this red, sweet and moist cake layered with cream cheese.

Hubby & I love to try out new places and new cuisines, but this is one place we always come back to when celebrating special occasions i.e. anniversaries, birthdays, etc. The food served is comfort food to us, especially their Original BBQ Chicken Chopped salad, which is a must order for our every visit! The salad is a wonderfully fresh and addictive mix of textures that has one's appetite thoroughly whetted - that must be the good CPK people's intention!

Food waiting time is acceptable. Be prepared to queue for seats but not to worry, staff are rather friendly and polite.

Ambience
PK takes up 2 Storey of the building and the warm lighting ambience somehow gives me a different feel, there is no rush to finish up the food fast even though it was crowded unlike the normal pizza fast food restaurants. A pleasant place to dine in if you like pizzas

Price
Reasonable priced judging base on their quality and quantity.

Recommendation / Tips
There is only one CPK in Singapore located at Forum the Shopping Mall, therefore be prepared to wait.

This is one of my favourite restaurants to have good pizza at. It's tucked away in Forum which is a rather quiet mall and has a good selection of gourmet pizzas to choose from. We ordered a Pepperoni Pizza that comes with lots of mushrooms and cheese. It was also our first time trying their Chicken Avocado wrap thingie that is deep-fried to a crisp - the creamy texture of the avocado went really well with the crispy exterior and the chicken cubes. We were the only ones in the queue so we asked if we could just wait inside as weather was hella hot (it was 2pm so sun was really up). However one of their waiters, who wasn't even the manager, told us to wait outside! Grrr...

It was a good thing that we got a table inside the restaurant after a few minutes of waiting outside. Anyway, we ordered the Tortilla Spring Rolls for our appetiser. There are 3 flavours and you can choose 2. We opted for the Baja chicken and the Meditteranean rolls. Flavour was quite unique in the sense that it doesn't just give you the same bland taste. The ingredients meshed with each other so well and came up with a dish that was very intriguing to the palate. The guacamole and chili dips also added to the appetiser's character. As soon as we cleaned our plates, this waiter who made us wait outside took the dish (including the dips) without even asking us! I told him: WE STILL NEED THE DIPS for we wanted to try it out with the Greek Pizza and the Broccoli and Sundried tomato pasta. Gosh, he didnt even ask us if he could clear that appetiser plate. SO irritating.

Now back to the main courses. The pasta was very light because it was only cooked with vegetables, tomato, and olive oil. It was a simple dish yet very memorable. The Greek pizza was very filling topped with a cucumber and so many other ingredients I couldn't remember. But what stuck in my mind was that the pizza was your not so ordinary pizza which you can order at any other restaurants. Yum!

I've always been quite a fan of California Pizza Kitchen so when they politely asked if I would like to try out their new menu, I simply couldn't say no. So there I was, on a hectic weekday evening, decked out in my Sunday best, hungrily awaiting the onslaught of food.

Moroccan Chicken Salad - One of the latest entries into CPK's salad lineup is the Moroccan Chicken Salad, which comes with a bagful of ingredients such as Moroccan spiced chicken breast, butternut squash, avacado, beets, cranberries, just to name a few. It does sound like a healthy albeit weird combination but I personally found it interesting with the myriad of texture and tastes. But it did get to a point where I didn't exactly know what I was eating due to the mish mash of flavours. If only they had it in smaller portions (half size is still too big in my humble opinion).

Sonora Egg Rolls - Apparently Sonora is a state in northwestern Mexico, which explains the Tex Mex vibe I got from eating the egg rolls. Crisp wanton skin wrapped around grilled lime chicken, roasted corn, black bean salsa, cheeses, roasted mild chillis and the likes - Nice blend of creaminess and a mild corn taste. The ranch dressing was a little like tartar sauce with a bit of spice from the bottled Cholula hot sauce.

Kung Pao Linguine - CPK's interpretation/add on to the traditional Chinese Kung Pao chicken, throwing pasta into the equation. The result? An interesting combination of east and west. The chicken slices were coated with egg and lightly fried. Throw in nuts, the quintessential dried chillis (more for presentation than spice honestly) and Kung Pao sauce and you have something simple yet delightful. It would have been better if the linguine was cooked a little firmer.

Peking Duck Pizza - One of the signature pizzas of CPK and probably the most unusual I've tried so far, the Peking duck pizza had an overdose of hoisin sauce this time round as compared to what I had on my previous trip. Nonetheless, it managed to maintain the chewy and flaky texture of its crust coupled with crispy wonton skins, duck slices and shiitake mushrooms (both of which I failed to notice, probably due to the thick sauce). So who's up for a western take on the peking duck?

Pesto Chicken Pizza - This pizza came in the form of a thin crust. Unlike the thin crust pizzas served in Italian outfits, CPK's version is considered an inbetween. Thinner than your regular thick crust pizzas yet thicker than your usual Italian thin crusts. Taste wise, the pesto base was reassuring with the sundried tomatoes but honestly quite a boring pizza - no twist or turns to entice me to take another slice. But maybe that's because I'm not a huge pesto fan.

The Meat Cravers Pizza - The first thing that hit me when I took a bite of this pizza was that my digestive tract had too much sodium going into it and I was reaching out for my glass of water in an attempt to dilute/neutralise it. While it may sound like a joke (yes it is!), the pizza as a whole was really quite salty probably due to the combination of salami, pepperoni, Italian sausage and bacon. I am a carnivore, but in this case, less is more. Thankfully the crust was nice and the cheese gooey. And of course for that glass of water beside me.

Tiramisu - To be fair, the tiramisu was decent, but not the authentic Italian kind I was more exposed to. For starters, the alcohol wasn't quite prominent and the mascarpone reminded me more of ice cream. Instead of the usual cocoa powder, shaved chocolate was used. Very palatable and best eaten without any preconceived notions of how a tiramisu should taste like.

Chocolate Souffle Cake - No oozing chocolate (which was a disappointment really), but still enjoyable nonetheless with its dense chocolate concentration as well as the nice thick chocolate sauce drizzled over it. Let's not forget the huge scoop of vanilla bean ice cream. Sinful comfort food.

Red Velvet Cake - What's interesting about this cake is that the the addition of beet into the mixture gives rise to the layers of red sponge, which is frosted with white chocolate and vanilla bean cream cheese. In reality however, it didn't taste too much out of the ordinary, very much like white chocolate cake with a nice creamy finish.

I ordered a blue crab cake pasta, and the pasta tasted sour-ish, and the blue crab cake tasted like something from old chang kee. The only food which agreed with my taste buds was the asparagus.

The food seems to be a fusion of flavours, and not "western" as I had expected.
