Left to right: Chicken & Milk Broth, Chicken Spicy Broth

Customers can choose up to 2 different soup base in 1 pot. We chose the Chicken & Milk Broth from Asuka Nabe and Chicken Spicy Broth from Danro Nabe. Now's the best time to taste the original taste of the soup as the refills would dilute your soup base (will explain more on that further down the post).

Handmade Kiritanpo

Danro Japanese Hot Pot comes with handmade Kiritanpo. However, this is limited to one per person. The Kiritanpo, a specialty dish of Akita Prefecture is essentially grilled rice skewer. Japanese cooked rice are pounded until they are mashed before being hand formed into cylinders around wooden skewers. They are then lightly brushed with special sweet sauce or miso for flavour before being toasted over an open fire. The Kiritanpo can either be eaten on its own or dipped into the hot pot.

Soup Refill Station

There was a Soup Refill Station, an innovative way to cut down on the manpower and increase productivity. There were small pots of Chicken or Wafu soup in it which customers could get anytime. These soup were a 'one soup fits all solution'. Since both our soup were chicken broths, we had to use the chicken soup refill. Even when e were to ask a serving for a refill, they used just chicken soup for both our soup bases. The problem with this was that it resulted in a diluted and not as fragrant soup base compared to when we just started.

Hence, our Chicken & Milk Broth became less milky and less fragrant while our Chicken Spicy Broth became less spicy. In addition, there was no attempt to stock up the soup refill station. Midway into our meals, there were no more pots of soup at that station as the were too few staff and these staff were all busy clearing the tables.

Onsen Egg

The Japanese Onsen Egg in light soy sauce was very well executed. Not only did it looked good, it also tasted good too. I liked it so much that I went for an additional helping of it.

The seafood corner was just average. The clams and prawns were not fresh especially the latter which stuck to its shell and meat was not firm. The shabu shabu beef and pork slices fared much better. We ate so many plates of it.

Left to right: Drinks, Soft Serve Ice cream

The DIY Soft Serve Ice Cream was fantastic. Its the same as what you get when you order ice cream dishes in MOF. Even though we were very full, we still went for this and it was oh just so shiok! There's always room for dessert!

Although there were hits and misses (seafood was not fresh, one size fits all soup for refills, service), Danro Japanese Hot Pot Buffet is really value for money! I certainly enjoyed most of the food here.

Danro is a Japanese hotpot buffet restaurant opened by MOF and is located at Serangoon NEX mall. The beef and pork comes in these black bento boxes shown in this photo. But frankly I prefer the pork to the beef as I felt the beef was a bit tough (even though I cooked it till it was barely done). Other items like chicken are pretty normal stuff that you find at most buffet lines.

They have several broth for you to choose and the pot can hold 2 types of broth. I think the miso broth is not bad for cooking. It's quite salty but adds nice flavour to the meats when you cook them in it. I do not like the spicy broth...it tastes kinda muddy and wasn't very pleasant.

We arrived pretty early at the restaurant and were ushered to a table almost right away. That probably marked a good start to a supposed good meal. Once we got seated, we were then left alone even though the restaurant wasn’t even crowded yet. No one came forward to take order of the broths we would like for our hotpot. I assumed it was still early as they just opened doors and probably needed more time to prep so we patiently waited for about 5-8 minutes and then saw some service staff scurrying around. When we gestured and caught the attention of one of the staff, the lady actually looked away and walked to another table to take order for another family who arrived later than we did.

We managed to take our order with another service staff (who looked like she was in a big rush). It would be helpful if the staff could run through the various broths available or probably give a quick introduction on how the dining system works so we would know where to start as first timers here. There wasn’t a list or menu provided on the table that we could refer to.

Apparently, there were nine soup bases to choose from, each representing a different prefecture in Japan. We could select two for our double soup pot and we decided on Nara (chicken and milk broth) and Akita (wafu/miso broth) which were their most popular picks.

Besides the standard ingredients of assorted vegetables, seafood, meats and yong tau foo you’d get at most hot pot buffets, Danro also serves a small selection of sushi, cooked food like bak kut teh, chilled onsen egg, oden (Japanese style yong tau foo), soba and an assortment of fried items too. Shabu Shabu Pork and Beef were also available in individual portions, stacked in bento-style boxes.

The bak kut teh was surprisingly good. Nice fragrant broth with tender soft-bone pork and sweet chunks of white radish. The onsen egg was well executed too. The fried food were overly greasy like most fried food in buffets anyway but the crispy salmon was quite a treat.

While the parents preferred the lighter Akita broth which was miso-flavoured, my husband and I liked Nara better because of its milky appearance and richer flavour. The Nara broth went very well with chicken and seafood whereas the Akita broth was good for yong tau foo items. If you’re a big fan of rich flavours like cheese, cream and the like, then you will enjoy the Nara broth too. The parents got a little sickly of it after a while but I thought the soup was extremely flavourful, the more you cooked things in.

We wanted a refill of the Nara broth when it almost ran out but the service staff said it would be chargeable at a couple of dollars more. Well, no one highlighted this surcharge to us at the start so it was quite unexpected that we needed to pay to get a refill of this ‘premium’ broth. We opted for some complimentary standard broth that we could help ourselves to. No loss at all as the ingredients soaking in the remaining broth in our pot had already added lots more flavour to the soup. We cracked an egg in and enjoyed the soup as it was.

If you’re a fan of kiritanpo (grilled rice on skewers), you can purchase each stick at $1. This is supposed to be Danro’s speciality. We weren’t aware about it as the service staff who took our order didn’t mention it so we didn’t get to try. Oh well.

My husband and I had a bit of fun at the sauce section trying to concoct our own special dipping sauces. I thought the sambal chilli tasted best.

We ended the meal with some fruits, cakes and soft serve ice cream. Nothing impressive to really rave about.

Food : buffet steam boat with 2 different soup based

Selection : food selection was great especially the thinly sliced beef and pork , seafood was fresh , suggest cuttlefish to be smaller in size. They served finger food like fried wanton , suggest to include chicken wings. Suggest to provide hot drinks like coffee and tea. Food station are clean and well organised.

Ambience : place are very well organized as there's no blocking to food station

Money : SGD 27 /pax

Overall , very satisfied with the food as value for money.

Big mistake. we totally under estimated the amount of people flooding the mall on a Valentines Day. (Okay my bad. After screening quite a few makan places and realise prices have been jerked up like mad, we kinda stumbled into this restaurant 'DANRO Japanese Hot Pot' and thought that the price is not too scary considering it is afterall a buffet hotpot restaurant.

DANRO Japanese Hot Pot @ Serangoon Nex serves hot pots from the different regions in Japan (Nagoya, Kyoto, Hokkaido, Akita, Tokyo, Nara, Shikoku, Fukuoka and Osaka). Currently Danro offers customers a choice of 8 different kind of soup base: Wafu, Wafu Miso, Chicken Miso, Tonkotsu, Chicken & Milk, Chicken Spicy, Chicken Paitan and Tonkotsu Miso. Which out of curiousity i picked Chicken & Milk and Tonkotsu soup base for a try.

I have to admit the chicken milk broth is rather weird for my taste bud and my friend and I ended up stealing food from another table of friends that picked Chicken Miso and Chicken Spicy instead. If you do not have a adventurous taste bud I would really suggest you to try some other broth although it seems that chicken & milk broth are more of their specialty. Another interesting thing about this place is that they serve rice skewers thatcan be dipped into the hot pot soup or eaten with DANRO's Dips.

This place also serves side dishes along with their buffet hotpot such as sushi, Onsen Eggs (my love!), Japanese style potato salad, cakes and desserts.

Personally i think they have a pretty good range of both cooked and raw ingredients for steamboat. Don't expect a very extensive range but i think it's good enough. Since it's yuan yang, we chose the wafu and spicy chicken soup broth. Do take note for soup refill, it's only chicken or wafu soup if i'm not wrong. It won't be the same kind of soup broth that you initially ordered.

Sauce wise.... Lots of choices! Had fun creating my own. It was pretty good and goes well with what i had. Overall i had a very satisfying dinner and will definitely be back since it's so convenient for me =)

The steamboat bowl has 2 compartments (similar to those ma la hot pot we have) that allows you to have 2 different soup bases. The soup is refillable and you can just pick up the soup container at the soup kiosk.

Verdict :
Food : *** (We love the nanbe soup base better than the miso one. LL feels that their nanbe one is better than nanbejin @ Plaza Sing while I beg to differ but both are just as good)
Price : *** (Considered quite reasonably priced at about $30 per pax on a weekend dinner)
Customer service : ***

Will I come again? Sure! Cos I can't wait to try out other soup bases!

since we have 4 adults, we can choose 4 kinds of soup base. They have quite a few for us to choose and we decide to choose these four. The clear soup is Akita Wafu Broth that is cooked with pork, chicken, shrimp and some vegetables. The milky soup is Nara Chicken and Milk Broth that is cooked with Chicken, Shrimp, Mushroom and some vegetables. These 2 are Danro's recommended soup base. I personally like both the soups but my friends preferred Akita over Nara.

The next pot we choose Hokkaido and Shikoku. The one in red is Shikoku Chicken Spicy Broth that is cooked with Pork, Chicken, Shrimp, assorted mushrooms and some vegetables, thou its named spicy but I find it not spicy enough and this is my favourite soup base out of the 4. The other soup base is Hokkaido Wafu Miso Broth that is cooked with Salmon, Shrimp and some vegetables.

For the 1st pot we chose the two Recommended soups...Akita wafu broth (cooked with pork, chicken, shrimp and assorted vege) and Nara chicken & milk broth (cooked with milk, chicken, shrimp, onion and other vege). For the second pot, we picked the Hokkaido wafu miso broth (cooked with salmon, shrimp, fish balls, radish and other vege) and Shikoku chicken spicy broth (cooked with pork, chicken, shrimp, onion and other vege).

I liked the Akita broth best...very wafu (和风) taste...sweet and light and gradually turns more and more flavorful after cooking various ingredients in it.

The buffet spread is huge, has wide selections of cooked and raw food. I'll let the pictures do the talking..

Cooked food includes Fried snacks like spring rolls, lotus roots, wanton etc. Crispy pork ribs, fried rice, fried mixed vege, cold soba, sushi, poached eggs...and the list goes on.

Numerous raw food stations includes marinated meats, fresh seafood, assorted vege, all kinds of balls etc. I'm pretty sure nobody can try everything within one meal session..

The cooked food such as sushi/maki, fried rice, crispy fried snacks (wanton, lotus roots, spring rolls, tori karaage etc.) and pork ribs were all pretty tasty!

As for raw food...most items were fresh and tasted good cooked in the broths..no complains. My personal fave is the Akita broth & Shikoku spicy broth. The Nara broth is too milky for my taste, Hokkaido broth is not as sweet as Akita's.

I am almost filled to the brim...but still insisted to have desserts...the soft serve ice cream is a must try! Fruits and jellies were not too bad either.

Our dining experience here was good, food quality and variety was above expectations for the price we paid. Service staffs comes regularly to clear unwanted dishes to make way for new ones. Definitely value for money!

Lots of variety from seafood to meat and vegetables. The rate of replenishing of food is quite frequent too. Love their flower crabs the most, and I had like 10 of those! Went with a group of 8 pax and they give us 2 pots, a total of 4 soup base. They have some interesting soup base, but what I don't like is that we can only replenish chicken base or suki base regarding of the original flavoured base that you choose. Replenishing of soup base is self service at the soup base counter but often times, the staff didn't replenish fast enough over at the counter.

Overall, would definitely go back there again when I have steamboat cravings.

I love steamboat and when i heard about this place, i wanted to try it out. Just like Suki-Ya, it has yuan yang style. My friend and i chose the Wafu and Spicy Chicken broth to try. Food selection may not be a lot but is pretty decent. Meat wise, it's sliced thinly which i don't mind so you won't seems to overeat so fast. Haha! For my next visit, i will like to try the broth with milk since it's like one of the recommended ones. For MOF members, can get 10% off =)

As on of the brands under the MOF banner, Danro at NEX offers a selection of Nabemono (Japanese hot pot dishes) from different regions of Japan, buffet style. At nearly $30 per pax for the buffet, the selection of food is kind of limited beyond the assorted soup bases. You can opt for up to 2 soup bases per hot pot, choosing from the likes of Wafu broth from Kyoto, Tonkotsu from Tokyo etc. We opted for the Wafu as well as the Chicken and Milk broth, both highly recommended by other patrons to Danro (超人气!)as well as for the contrast they would provide. The Wafu is a light and clear soup base - the main component of radish giving it an underlying sweet tone, while the Chicken and Milk broth tends more on the creamier side.

While there wasn't much to choose from for the buffet spread, the staff at Danro do keep them well-stocked. You would hardly see empty trays or missing items. Diners can have their pick of starters, vegetables, assorted meatballs, seafood and meats.

Highlighting the Onsen Egg from the list of appetizers - a half boiled egg immersed in what seems to be a cold Shoyru-based bath with a couple of sprigs of spring onion. Interesting experience!

But the highlight of the dinner had to be the beef and pork shabu shabu. The thin slices of meat cook within a minute or 2 of cooking, and taste great picked piping hot right out of the pot or with sauce dips that you can create from the restaurants recommended lists or off the top of your head.

Foodie tip! Even going around the entire buffet spread with a fine tooth comb, you would still not be able to find the restaurant's signature Kiritanpo, rice sticks pounded from freshly cooked rice, toasted and served with sweet miso sauce drizzled on it. You would have to order the dish separately. By itself, the Kiritanpo has that earthy burnt flavour of rice, but tastes just as nice if you dip them into your choice of soup. Don't miss out!

On the whole, it was a good experience at Danro. But it's kind of hard justifying the price point with the small variety of food available. So.. we'll see!

Danro is one of the most worth it steamboat buffet I've even been to! With the mof card you pay only $14.90++! There's a whole lot of varieties including scallop and clams. You can choose two soup bases as well! There's also a sauce mixing and a dessert bar where you can make the soft ice cream from MOF. There's also no time limit and you can eat from 1130-330 with nobody chasing you out
