Saturday was a hot day, so I wanted to buy some cooling dessert for my family.

Since I was at Chinatown, I decided to go to Er Gu Dessert to buy some desserts. The stall aunty was friendly recommending which dessert for cooling purposes.

The Almond & sesame paste had a nice aroma of almond but no sesame. The taste was also more of almond than sesame flavour. The paste was smooth and somewhat starchy.

The green bean soup smelled of dried orange peels. There was really dried orange peels in the soup. The green beans were boiled until the meat exploded out. The taste of the soup was sweet and some bitterly, sourish due to the dried orange peel.

Each cost $1.50 for dine in and $1.60 for takeaway.

The sesame paste looks different than what I thought as the color was not greyish black like those rice ball fillings I had eaten and instead it was brown in color. Sweetness level is alright however I will prefer its peanut paste to this.

Peanut paste was more fragrant and as creamy as sesame paste and contained in small plastic disposable bowl. I was told that when Er Gu is still around, each bowl would cost S$0.50 lesser than the current pricing.

The stall lady was rather fierce and stand firm on her rights with the "Self Service" Sign even though there wasn't much customers. There was these 2 aunties who were sitting beside us (we were sitting in front of the stall), thought the paste will be served but the stall lady shouted across us and had gave her a ferocious look telling her its self service. There then the auntie then dragged herself up from the seat and collect the bowls.

So remember, practise self service.

Cost: S$1.50 / bowl

Black Sesame Paste(+) Very thick and rich, maintaining the smoothness and not viscous like typical sesame paste.(-) The fragrance of the black sesame was lacking and that failed to stimulate my appetite before trying.(-) Wanted the almond paste but it was sold out, so this was a substitute.Verdict: 6.5/10Barley with Gingko Nuts(+) Very thick barley soup, almost like porridge, just the type I have been hunting for!(+) The barley beans were boiled till very soft, so swallowing them was no problem.

Barley with Gingko Nuts
(+) Very thick barley soup, almost like porridge, just the type I have been hunting for!
(+) The barley beans were boiled till very soft, so swallowing them was no problem.
(+) Classic combination with fresh gingko nuts, not the canned ones laden with syrup.
(+) Overall a delicacy that is not overly sweet.

Verdict: 8.0/10

This stall serves a few types of traditional hot desserts like the red bean soup, green bean soup, sesame paste, peanut paste and yam paste. I have tried most of these desserts and I liked it. The level of sweetness was just right though i do prefer it to be slightly sweeter. All the desserts are priced at $1.50 for a rather small bowl. The overall tast

The overall taste was alright though this is not going to be my top choice of dessert at this stall.

Very heavy rain. With no where else to go to, just stay in Chinatown complex to look for dessert while waiting rain to stop.Orders 3 different desserts : Black sesame paste, peanut paste, almond paste ($1.50 each ), as it has been a long time since I last eaten here. Wants to try as much as possible. The peanut paste tastes the best. The black sesame paste is tasteless, just feels like starch, none of the black seasame. The almond paste is ok but feels that not enough the almond's taste.

I had mango sago for dessert. this mango sago is very rich in mango flavour!~ Every poon, there will always be plenty of sago in it. When you put it in your mouth, the sago seems to have the mango taste too. And, when it slipped down your throat, you will feel like keep wanting to eat more as the mango do not make you feel tired of it. It seems to make you more hungry! There is still more dessert there.

I went looking for this stall after done with my lunch. I decided to go with red bean paste amongst their other desserts for $1.40. It was served in a small bowl. I was done with it in 8 mouthfuls and craving for more. I enjoyed the old school taste of red bean served in a sweetened thick gooey soup. There was quite a handful of red beans in it and these red beans were of the right texture, not too soft nor too hard. But, paying $1.40 for such a small bowl might be a bit pricey though the quali

This dessert stall is strongly recommended by a good friend. This stall offers traditional desserts like yam paste, red bean paste etc. I ordered a bowl of red bean paste. The red bean taste was thick and fragrant and they cooked the red beans nicely and not too meshy. It has got a stronge taste of dried tangerine too. The sweetness level was just right. This is a healthy dessert to complement a meal.

This dessert stall serves quite a number of different hot desserts like tau suan, black sesame paste, peanut paste, red bean soup etc. I decided to go for the black sesame paste which is my favourite paste to order at dessert stalls. The black sesame paste is quite thick and fragrant and it is very rich in sesame taste. However, I felt that it is slightly more sweet than I would like it to be. If it is just slightly less sweet, it will be perfect.

Bought home some of the hot dessert from the dessert stall, luckily there were still quite alot of varieties left when i was there. Over the years, whenever i am at chinatown area, i will always go and have a bowl of hot dessert. The dessert are thick, hot, fragrant and the price is cheap too.
