Todai Singapore an international seafood and sushi buffet restaurant opened at Marina Bay Sands in 2011. It is an international brand with presence in United States, Hong Kong and China South Korea, and has been hailed as 'The Mother of All Seafood Buffet' by a famous food critic. Todai Singapore presence in Singapore has not been exactly smooth sailing. In late 2011, a group of customers had food poisoning after consuming the oysters in Todai. Those who followed the news would have known that the Todai's management responded quickly and compensated the customers. It was heartening to note that they did not reacted negatively or defensively.

I have been wanting to visit Todai Singapore as I am a fan of Seafood. I have to try this 'mother of all seafood buffet'!

Todai Singapore is located at the corner of the basement of Marina Bay Sands (the portion nearer to Bayfront MRT station entrance / Exhibition Center).

For the month of May and June, Todai held a Premium Abalone Festival along with Alaskan Crab Buffet.

Stepping into the restaurant, I was most impressive with the long line of buffet spread. Todai Singapore had quite an extensive spread of food. The seating capacity was huge! Even on a weekend, they restaurant had just 50% of the tables occupied.

There were Salads & Cold Cuts, Sushi & Sashimi, Cold Seafood, Italian Pizza & Pasta, Brazilian Churassco, Korean food, Noodles, Western food, Chinese food, Deep Fry and Desserts.

The King Crab, Snow Crab and Red Crab section, and the Baby Octopus, Green Mussuel, Scallop (Cold Seafood) section were the most popular sections.

Todai Singapore had a unique way of displaying the Macaroons in the shape of a pyramid. The dessert section was next to it.

Food from the Cold Seafood section; Snow Crab, Abalone, Baby Octopus, Green Mussel and Scallop. The Snow Crab was great! Fresh and sweet! The best item among all the food in the Cold Seafood section. The mussel was average. The first batch of Scallop was very fresh. However, the subsequent batches were not as good.

The highlight for the month was supposed to be the Abalone. It was small in size and taste wise was not impressive. The snow crab stole the limelight.

The Abalone Porridge was tasty, flavourful and not diluted. Although there were only a few pieces of abalone bits in it, it was surprisingly delish.

The Sushi was just the tip of the ice berg. There were more different varieties of sushi available.

The Grill Lamb Rack and La Galbi (Beef Short Rib) were tough and hard. The other sections in the Deep Fry section was equally disappointing. Especially the Vegetable Tempura which had a thick coat of batter and were oily. The Miso Shisamo with Gratin Sauce had such a fishy smell that I did not finish it.

The Abalone Gratin was a hard to get item. I walked past the counter several times to try to land my hands on it. They replaced this item at a very slow rate. Out of all the abalone items (Abalone, Abalone Porridge, Abalone Gratin), the Abalone Gratin was the most disappointing.

The food at the Churassco section was incredibly oily. Even the mushroom was soak fully of oil. The chicken wings were overcooked and tasteless. The Italian food fared much better compared to the food at the Churassco section.

I went back for more of the abalones and snow crabs. The Snow Crab was the only item which I went back several times for. Look at how big they are.

I need to improve in using the ice cream machine. The ice cream was quite delish!

Overall, I only like Todai Singapore for their King Crab, Snow Crab, Red Crab and Ice Cream. Although there was a wide variety of food, I did not fancy most of the food. As we ate during lunch on a weekend, after adding up all the additional charges, the bill came up to $75.33 nett per person. Quite pricey, I would be better off going to Kuishinbo if I was to just spam on the Snow Crab (which was what I did).

Chilli crab which was perpetually out of stock all the time was diluted and tasteless when I eventually get hold of a bowl.

Chicken abalone soup was always out. Disappointed that I did not get to try at all.

Pasta was very normal tasting as well. Their presentation was nice that's about it.

Pizza and sushi was not bad.

Dessert, you can really forget about it, old school confectionary shops can do better. The only thing nice at the dessert station was probably fruits with chocolate fondue, that doesnt require much skills to prepare.

I guess the only good thing was their snow crab leg. Every thing else was just average or below average.

The seafood section here is fresh and has quite a lot of varieties to choose from. If you are an oyster fan, you may be disappointed as you are only limited to 2 oysters each time and the queue for the oyster is quite long at times. I personally like their this crab leg, its quite freshy and sweet.. most importantly, its very fresh.. I like to dip the meat in soya sauce.. the salty soya sauce enhance the freshness of the meat..

Apart from seafood, todai also offered their customers the choice of hot food too, do remember to try out the pasta counter, the pasta is cooked upon request and you can choose the kind of pasta and sauce. I like their caborana sauce.. its thick and yummy.. The Chinese section offers lots of nice hot Chinese food which are nice and tasty.

Todai is a great place for yummy food and the price thou a little steep, but I think the quality of food is quite worth the money.

The price includes buffet, soft drinks (Coca Cola, F&N, Coke Light, Ice Lemon Tea, Sprite, Milo, Nescafe frappe, Lemonade, Peach Tea), Coffee (Black Coffee, Cappuccino, Latte, Mocha& Espresso), Teh Tarik and Tea (Lipton Tea, Peppermint, Decaffeinated, English Breakfast, Chamomile & Green Tea). All alcohol drinks will be charged.

Todai introduces 12 sections in their buffet line, some of which are Churrasco, tepanyaki, sashimi, Korean cuisine, Japanese sushi and Chinese cooked food.

Indeed, Todai has unveiled a new menu consisting free flow of Sea Eel BBQ, Abalone Ginseng Chicken Soup and ala carte Alaskan King Crab that are simply irresistible. The local and international choices are aplenty at the buffet too.

My other favorite section at Todai is none other than the Churrasco section.
The Churrasco section has a wide variety of meat for you to enjoy as well.

Most of the meat are prepared to medium rare. You can actually request for a longer simmer if you do not prefer meat that are too raw.

Sea Eel BBQ
Hands down to the juicy and meaty Sea Eel BBQ. The Sea Eel taste great as it is coated with tasty BBQ sauce, but I personally didn't like how it was packed with soft and tiny fish bone although it is consumable.

Several of us were at Todai for the first time, so we started with a restaurant tour. I noticed that Ambience at Todai differs greatly depending on your seating location, it's generally quieter the further you are from the buffet spread. Tables nearer the buffet area also tend to be packed quite closely, and conversations may carry over. Furniture is comfortable and rather spacious.

The Todai Private Dining Room is large enough to comfortably accomodate 12 people, and this was where we were hosted. Lighting is sufficient, though I felt the TV quietly playing Korean music videos was unnecessary. Service at Todai that night was efficient and well-organised, but as we were dining with the manager, I can't say for sure that the service is typical of everyday service at Todai.

The first new dish on Todai menu for their 'Healing Foods' promotion in July 2013 is the Abalone Ginseng Chicken Soup. Consisting of a firm and meaty Korean abalone in a thin consomme / broth of chicken soup, with Korean ginseng, chestnut, Korean red date / jujube, and ginko nut. It's served in a specially imported bowl designed to look like Korean bamboo. It is said to be able to build healthy muscle tissue and re-energize the body.

The second new dish is the Sea Eel BBQ, also known as 'Unago', a beautifully grilled piece of sweet and meaty sea eel, garnished with spring onions and ginger. It is said to aid the rejuvenation of cells.

A highlight at Todai is their supply of King Crab, Red Crab and Alaskan Snow Crab, which many would consider to be their most popular item. Fortunately, their crab is fresh, and replenished at the buffet spread quite regularly!

All kitchen stations here are open concept, and part of the appeal is watching the chef prepare the food. Catch the Sashimi Chef slicing the fresh fish, before laying it on a stunning beautifully presented platter Selection Of Sashimi.

Wide range of Selection Of Desserts, including Mango Cheesecake, Strawberry Cheecake, Chocolate Brownie, Chocolate Banana Gateau Cake, Green Tea Mousse Cake and Walnut Pie. These were all good, with the most outstanding being the incredibly soft Green Tea Mousse Cake which just crumbles when touched, and the lovely and sweet Chocolate Banana Gateau Cake. The bland, dry and hard Chocolate Muffin was the worst thing I ate here, and Todai has promised to improve on it.

We went in with high expectations for the seafood spread. With greater expectation comes greater disappointment. The seafood spread consists of the enormous crab legs, mussels and scallop. They do not have fresh prawns neither do they have oysters. Great disappointment. The mussels and scallops were refilled once they were gone but every time refilled there will only be 10 shells on the ice panel. However, the crab legs were really good! They were big, juicy and sweet. Awesome! The only reason I will head back to Todai will be their crab legs. Nothing else.

Their cooked food wasn't amazing. In fact, for many dishes were served cold and unappealing.

As for the desserts wise, it was okay. They have a wide selection for the desserts.

I will not go again given the price and servings they are offering. There are better buffets out there with better pricing and food.

My family and I were really looking forward to it because the photos on their website show so so so much varieties of food especially for the seafood and dessert ( which these two are our favourites !
).

On the day itself we got a bit disappointed as the number of food selections there did not tally with what which were shown on their website. >< Examples: Seafood like cooked shrimp, scallop, oyster, octopus & Deep fry like Korean ginseng ( we really wanted to try this ! ) & Churrasco for chicken or pork are all not available.

For seafood they only have Crab's legs, Sashimi and Abalone (all these refill very slow though). Churrasco they only have beef, few kinds of sausage and chicken wings.

Addition, the 2 lady chefs at the Italian section ignored us and talk among themselves when we tried to order the pasta. Then some time later, after we tried really hard to get their attention, they just asked us to wait in an impatience tone ><. So end up we just gave up ordering it.

However, what make us happy is the selection of the fanciful type of sushi !! they have like 10~20 kinds of sushi !! ( although all tasted kinda the same to me :x but what important is the effort of the chef which make all of the sushi looks pretty rite ! )

Conclusion:
The varieties of food selection and also the refilling speed of dishes (other than seafood, some of the other food replenish quite slow too. I saw more empty trays than food most of the time) make it not worth the money, which is very disappointing. ( *uffet *own @ Raffles City / *he *ine @ Shangri-La Hotel can do a lot better in my opinion XD ). So, I think I wun't consider for a re-visit or recommend to my friends.

Suspect they soaked the crab legs in salt water to prevent it from being bad. The only few dishes which I like are the fanciful sushi, the pasta (crab meat cabonara, pic below) and some of the grill items. Other than that which include the dessert are all... not up to what a $68+++ buffet should be offering. Very disappointed.

All their seafood are fresh and tasty, you could taste the sweetness in the meat. However, despite being there for 3 times, I always find the tray for soft shell crab empty (no matter early or late). Till now, the tastiness of the soft shell crab remain as mystery.

Personally I feel that they should have a few racks for customers to take the extra fork and spoons or serviettes on their own.

If you like alaskan snow crabs and oysters, this is the place to go for free flow of both. The snow crab legs were really huge and very fresh. The meat was sweet enough With lots of juices in every bite. The oysters were also very fresh without the brine taste being too overpowering. But they had a 2 per person each time limit to prevent hogging. The rest of the buffet spread was decent. Deserving mention includes the macarons and I particularly liked the Baked salmon

I must admit, I'm late to the party. Nearly 4 years after the launch of Todai in Singapore, I finally visited the restaurant at its now famed establishment at Marina Bay Sands.

Todai is offers buffet-style dining, with an assortment of international cuisine, hot entrees, cold dishes and desserts. While I had a great time going around sampling dishes like Smoked Duck with Apple, slices of roast beef or even picking out macarons from the uniquely-shaped, pyramid macaron tower.

But what really had me going, to the extent of forgetting to take photographs, was the seafood section. Plates upon plates of delectable seafood - mussels, oysters, sushi, not forgetting fresh sashimi of Salmon and Tuna.

AND Todai's signature snow crab legs! Stacks upon stacks of snow crab legs, big plump and juicy. To crack the shell and pull out an entire chunk of succulent crab meat is already an enjoyment in itself.

Just to illustrate how big the crab legs were.

At $80 a pop ($72 because of a 10% discount from UOB), a buffet dinner at Todai can be pretty pricey and tough for the walllet. But just to experience the seafood galore, and just indulge in all the snow crab you can eat? I'll go again!
