Tonkichi is the only place that I always go back to for fried cutlet, because the food doesn't taste greasy, neither too heavy.

I find that Tonkichi is quite underrated for the quality of the food. I don't really find the price there expensive, especially when I compare the quality of their food with their casual Japanese dining places.

Taste: One of the best tonkatsu. The cutlet is very crispy and juicy. Rice and vegetable is free flow.Environment: Nice japanese restaurant design.Service: Service experience is okay.Clean: No problems with the cleanliness.Price: I went to eat this with a deal coupon. They also have a promo on Wednesdays. Without promo or discount, the meals can be quite expensive.

Since everyone ordered the usual Tonkatsu (deep fried pork fillet), I decided to order something different from the menu.

I had ordered Tonkatsu with cheese.

When the order came, I thought the tonkatsu does not looked different from others wonder had they gave me the wrong order.

So I decided to takeout one piece and there was melted cheese flowing out from the tonkatsu.

The outer breaded skin of the tonkatsu was hot, cripsy and fluffy, no oiliness feel.

Inside the pork was slightly fatty type, meat was tender and juicy, with flowing melting cheese made overall even juicier!

Craving for Japanese food, so we went to Tonkichi at Ngee Ann City.We ordered the Hire Katsu Platter, Grilled Fish. It’s fun grating the sesame as the aroma makes you hungrier. The katsu is in a thick slices and coated with fluffy breadcrumbs.Despite deep fried, the katsu is very tender and soft as it will literally melts in your mouth. The katsu set come with different sauces like the ponzu, vinegar, salsa sauce.

Usually I will have their signature deep fried pork or chicken cutlets whenever i visit this outlet. This is my first time trying their ramen, and surprisingly it is equally delicious. The ramen is smooth and chewy, and really enjoy the generous portion served to me. The char siew meat is tender and juicy, just quite lacking of the 'char siew' flavour in it. The sliced bamboo shots also make this dish more 'crunchy' during every mouthful of it. The soup is sweet but maybe abit too salty.

Any good piece of meat is capable of cropping up a challenging time, from the moment of selection, preparation to cooking. But all things cannot be achieved without a sophisticated rearing process in the case of swine production, especially when the legendary Iberian pig becomes the spotlight and well sought after by the culinary kitchen. If there are 2 things I should encode in my memory for 2012, it will be “Tapas” and “Iberico pork”. The two are often spotted on the dance floor, if not seen on the stove top. Almost synonymous, they are nearly everywhere you see in the dining room.

You probably have sank your teeth upteem times, tearing the meat effortlessly that follows by a lardy smooth melty sensation in the mouth with this prized meat - bathed in hot oil. While others had them at some popular Japanese eateries, I tried mine at Tonkichi – a Tonkatsu specialty chain – under the Pokka Food Corp.

In the month of December, the breaded Iberico tenderloin makes it to the menu for the first time –

. Priced at $32, I received 3 fillet cuts, each half the size of my palm. Given a choice of hire (tenderloin) and rōsu (loin) cut, I often opt for the former as it came with lesser amount of fats and most delicate. In fact, the meat runs along the central spine of the pig, with the loin muscle making a larger part for locomotion and a much smaller segment merely for posture then becomes less fibrous – tenderloin, found near the end of this loin. Make your choice over hire or rōsu, either part of this Iberian pig will serve alongside with some refillable shredded cabbage & rice, tsukemono (pickles), chawanmushi, miso and fruits.

I fought hard to resist its buttery texture, these golden crisp fillets weren’t floury. I am always amazed by the Japanese batter, so well formulated that it shatters every time. Aren’t you tempted by the craggy exterior when confronted? I succumbed to this swine tyrant uncontrollably, too weak to defend. Although the crumbs can be edgy and caused some discomfort when met with parts of my soft oral linings, the moisture kept in the fillet under the crisp sheath soothed the pricks I had. What makes it marvellous was the less greasy and ultra-tender composition. This acorn-fed Spanish black pork is definitely worth trying. The additional 10bucks is the price to pay for the premium specimen, 50% for that regular hire katsu set going for $20.90. Be sure to dabble the meat in Worcestershire sauce, better yet, coat them in the powdered sesame seeds you crushed earlier on. The caramelised condiment adds a fruity punch to the meat. Unless you wanted more heat, the yellow karashi (Japanese mustard-paste) will be helpful. For simplicity, squeeze the lemon wedge for that extra zest and to fuse any additional oily secretion – if any – but wasn’t present in my case.

I guess the meat is the only item I have greatly enjoyed, other than the good mannered service and a timber wood layout. Although I questioned on the quality of the rice which was mushy, the worst being the fruits – watermelon – all time syrupy in its unnatural form.

The chawamushi here at Tonkichi may taste not too bad, but at the price of five dollars per serving, I still think is abit too expensive as the portion served is quite small. The steamed egg is very smooth in texture and there are fresh crunchy prawn, crab meat hiding inside the steamed egg. The ingredients are really fresh but I could not really find any 'x-factor' to this side dish and I will certainly not buy it during my next round of visit to Tonkichi.

I like the idea of making your own sauce here. You are given a bowl of sesame, and a grinder stick. After grinding the sesame to fine powder, you can choose the sauce to pour over it, and this will be the sauce for your pork. We have ordered a Premium Rosu Katsu set and Kasane Katsu set. For the set, you will get a pork that served with refillable salad, rice and soup too. The Premium Rosu Katsu is deep fried Grain Fed Premium Pork Loin, but we don't really like it because it's very fatty inside

Kasane Katsu is made of a whole stalk of finely cut pork, very lean. The texture is so nice to bite on, not hard at all. Good stuff! We have the original one, alternatively, you could choose the cheese Kasane Katsu, should be even better.
