Tried the fried bee hoon at this stall located at Choa Chua Kang MRT station. Great location! I like bee hoon that are white and not the brown kind as it feels healthier. Huge portion of bee hoon! Even though the ingredients in the bee hoon were not fantastic, there were lots of it in them. I ordered a fish fillet and some brinjals to go along with my bee hoon. Brinjal was soft but quite oily. Fish filet was ok. No complaints for the price I paid and the amount of bee hoon, and the fact that this is generally considered "fast" food.

Categories : Singaporean Chinese | Zi Char

Ever since my grandmother stopped cooking reunion dinners at home, we have been going to zi char eateries for our annual reunion dinners. This year, we decided to try out 2 Chefs Eating Place since we've heard some pretty good comments about the food there. It had also won the Makansutra 2009 award. We opted for the 10-course reunion dinner package.

As expected, the first dish to arrive at a traditional reunion dinner was the Yu Sheng.

I'm not a big fan of Yu Sheng as I don't really like the slight sour taste that it has. However, this one was surprisingly ok. Portion was alright, just nice for about 10 people.

As usual, reunion dinners also have shark's fin soup and ours was no different. This dish tasted normal, like other shark's fin soup. Not memorable.

This is their signature dish, Butter Ribs. This is the most popular dish at this eatery. The ribs were sprinkled with what looked like cheese flakes but turned out to be milk powder instead. Curry leaves were also added as toppings. I found this dish so-so and not deserving of the fantastic comments it had received on the net. The meat was tough and I am not sure what the milk powder did to enhance the taste of the ribs. Perhaps the chef's standards have dropped after opening another branch.

Next, we had the Spinach with Shiitake Mushrooms and Tofu. Nothing much to rave about here-- Just steamed spinach cooked in oyster gravy and some egg tofu.

Spending per head: Approximately $50(Dinner)

Salmon + chicken OK Jul 20, 2013

Categories : Japanese | Sushi/Sashimi | Kids-Friendly

Sakae Sushi is one of the two Japanese restaurants that are located near to where I live so whenever my family gets tired of one restaurant, we will visit the other. This time, it was Sakae Sushi's turn.

This is the Volcano Maki which features sushi rice wrapped in grilled salmon and topped with fish roe. I'm not sure in what way this can be called a volcano as there was no eruption about it and it was short of explosive.

This is the Salmon Fritters which closely resembles a potato croquette. I like how it was not just stuffed with salmon but had corn in it as well. The batter is light and fried to a crisp. It was both crunchy and soft at the same time.

Next, we also ordered the Chicken Cheese Katsu. I like that the katsu is not fried but grilled. However, the mayonnaise and cheese combination covering the chicken was a little heavy for me. The meat was soft and overall, it was tasty.

We also had the Chicken Cheese Tartar Katsu. It is essentially the same dish as the previous one, just with tartar in the mayonnaise. This one was more flavourful than the previous one and had a tinge of sourness to it. The additional tartar taste is the same as the tartar sauce in the McDonald's filet-o-fish.

Spending per head: Approximately $10(Dinner)

Shredded Chicken Kway Teow OK Jul 20, 2013
Share on TwitterShare on Facebook
Categories : Food Court | Chicken Rice

Shredded Chicken Kway Teow has always been one of my favourite dishes. When I found out that the chicken rice stall at the food court served this dish, I had to try it!

The kway teow seems to be thinner and smoother than other others I've tried elsewhere. It was also easy to mix with the gravy. The serving of the gravy was generous but the gravy was rather sweet. However, the chili can mask the sweetness and if you mix it in, the gravy would not be a problem. Not much to rave about the chicken although the highlight of the dish and also the stall is supposed to be the chicken. It was alright. Overall an okay dish, nothing much to rave about.

Dong Dae Mun OK Jul 18, 2013

Categories : Korean

Located at the basement of Lot 1, next to GongCha, is Dong Dae Mun. It is a stall that sells Korean street food and has tons of branches across the island. I think the rice dishes are rather new so I decided to give it a try.

This is the beef set and it comes with rice and kimchi. The beef is stir-fried and is only fried upon ordering so it is piping hot when served. The portion of the beef and the rice is quite big. However, beef was quite bland albeit being rather soft. Would liked to have more gravy in the beef as well. According to the other reviewers, the rice cake is quite nice. Will try that next time!
