Crabs and more crabs Smile Mar 08, 2011

It was my mum's birthday so the whole family decided to have crabs at Great Eater. It was pretty crowded for a weekday night. We had black pepper crabs and chilli crabs. The black pepper crabs were awesome. The black pepper was not too overwhelming but the most important thing was the crabs were fresh.

They served us "female" chilli crabs. The roe went really well in the chilli sauce. Thumbs up for this as well. smile Of course, we had some man tous to go with it.

We also had other dishes such as deep fried sotong, fried scrimp rolls, braised pig trotters and scrimp paste fried chicken. Generally the food was good, especially the braised pig trotters. It tasted like the chinese "lor ba" but with pig trotters. The pig trotters were really tender. Quite a special dish for a zhi char stall at a coffee stall.

great chinese food Smile Mar 07, 2011

I've been to Bosses a few times and I must say the quality of the food is really fantastic. I would always order their shark cartilage soup. This is really creamy and it doesn't have a fishy taste. smile

We ordered drunken chicken too. This dish was very tasty and the alcohol was not over-whelming. It tasted even better with the ginger that was served along with it. smile

As we wanted a veg dish, so we saw the recommendation in the menu, Fried Tofu with salted egg. It sounded really interesting but it was quite disappointing. There was no taste of salted egg at all. The tofu was fried and served on kailan with oyster sauce. The tofu was soaked in the oyster sauce thus it became soggy at the bottom. sad

They also serve a variety of dim sum items. Unfortunately since there were only 2 of us, we only managed to order their xiao long baos. Very juicy! Be careful not to break the bao when you picked it up from the basket.

Overall, I have always been a great fan of Bosses. Hopefully next time I will try their famous Liu Sha Bao.

quite a bad experience OK Mar 02, 2011

My friends have raved about Old Town to me several times so I decided to give it a try. I went to the branch at Far East plaza. The food was acceptable, not extremely fantastic. Truthfully, I didn't think it was something worth raving about.

I ordered the Supreme Curry Noodles. It was super oily! My friend ordered the Supreme Lasi Lemak. This was not too bad. The fried chicken was crispy on the outside and their sambal ikan billies were really yummy.

However, there is one thing I needed to highlight. Their service was terrible! They are severely understaffed. We visited the restaurant at around 7pm and there were only one waitress serving the diners. My friend had to walk to the kitchen to place the order personally. When we wanted to pay the bill, we stood at the counter for a good 15 min before the cashier attended to us.

well deserved trip Smile Feb 01, 2011

I've always been a fan of steamboat but I have never ventured out of the usual chicken, tom yam and mala soup base until my friend introduced me to satay soup base for steamboat at Tianfu. To my surprise, I didn't feel "overdosed" with satay sauce at all. It made everything that was cooked in the soup taste saltier but yet, manage to keep the original taste of the ingredients.

They serve ala carte items and buffet as well. For buffet, it cost about $20 per pax but the selection was rather limited. Many items such as luncheon meat, stuffed meat balls etc were not found in buffet menu. You have to order separately. It is recommended you make reservation before you go as it is usually packed during dinners.

something different Smile Feb 01, 2011

This place is rather new and the name of the restaurant caught my attention. Confused cooks? Well, indeed the cook has a special taste for their menu. They serve rather special dishes.

The owner recommended us to try out 2 of their special dishes. One was salad with quail eggs and scallop. The other was tofu tiramisu. The salad itself was very light (no dressing) but with fried quail eggs and scallops, it became much tastier but not too overly done. Fried quail eggs are quite innovative since most of the time you would find fried (normal) eggs in other cafes or restaurants.

The other dish, tofu tiramisu, was made with tofu as the name said for itself. It was not too sweet and although it was lack of alcohol, the tofu made the dessert much softer and it actually blends well with the cocoa powder. A must try dish! smile
