Lunar new year goodies Smile Feb 10, 2013

My reason as a non-chinese to look forward to the lunar new year would definitely be due to the specials that Mac has along with their prosperity meals. They're curly fries is a huge hit with every individual. This time round I ordered the Big Mac Meal which included the big mac, twister fries (that I requested for) and also I changed my drink to the orange fizz (which was fresh orange juice with sprite. This gave the beverage a nice tangy twist to it.

I love mac burgers for their fresh sesame seed buns and fresh ingredients like lettuce. The quality of the burgers have never failed to disappoint me. Twister fires has always been a delight to look to with a tinge of spice. Though, I found it to be a tad oilier as compared to its counterpart - french fries. Nevertheless, it's practically a once a year indulgence.

I also love the apple pies that come pipping hot with an overwhelming filling of apple sauce in them. The outer shell is crispy and made to perfection. Macs definitely has the best apple pies! smile

Big Mac: 8/10
Twister Fries: 8/10
Apple pie: 9/10
Orange fizz: 8/10

Noodles Cry Feb 10, 2013

Categories : Coffeeshop | Zi Char

It was my first visit to Varinice eating house when I discovered a vegetarian stall there. It was dinner time and a queue was forming at the stall; along with the other stalls. This eating house was located in a one story coffee shop with only outdoor seating available. There were fans around the cofeeshop to keep customers reasonably comfortable. The stall had a variety of food available such as ala carte dishes that are cooked on the spot (Chicken rice, meat fried rice, normal fried rice) etc along with the normal white rice/bee hoon and dishes (tofu, vegetables, mock meat, curry).

I have always loved hong kong fried noodles and since this stall had it, I decided to to give it a go for take away. My dish was cooked on the spot by the chef which took a decent amount of time (10 minutes). The food was still warm when I reached home. However, I was quite disappointed in the dish. There were a few mock praws, a few carrots, a few stalks of vegetables and mock meats.

Though the noodles were not over or under cooked, it lacked ingredients and that wok hei flavor. The noodles tasted way too plain. It was also lacking in taste (even with soya sauce/salt added).

Unfortunately the meal was below satisfactory. However, looking at the queue, I would give this stall another chance hoping they do better with other dishes.

Red bean OK Feb 10, 2013

Categories : Bakery | Halal

I usually go to Swee Heng for my daily bakery needs. I love how the breads are baked fresh and can be smelt a mile away (which usually attracts me in the first place). I rate the freshly baked breads here 8/10. My favorite bun has got to be the red bean bun! Hence, I decided to try them at Swee Heng. I love the soft texture of the soft sesame seed bun that is filled with a generous amount of red bean paste. The filling in the bun had just the right amount of paste. The buns not only taste fresh but smell fresh too.

However, the buns taste pretty normal with nothing spectacular that make them stand out from its competitors. I found the pricing to be pretty expensive as well ($2). I don't think I'll be back for the buns as they were nothing above average. I do recommend the freshly baked breads though!

Nothing but the best! Smile Feb 05, 2013

Fried Rice!

Fried Rice!

We came here to send of a friend who was near and dear to us. Hence, I decided to treat her to a nice lunch along with a couple of my uni mates. I must say the food options here are vast. The Korean bbq looked really cool too but we sticked to normal dishes for sharing.

The first picture illustrates our vegetarian fried rice which was fit for sharing among 2-3 people. It was made vegetarian especially for us! The best part? taste was not compromised at all! Amongst vegetables like carrots, cabbage, mushrooms and kai lan, there was also fried nuts that were used to garnish the dish. The fried rice in everyone's opinion was excellent! The portion was worth every penny and every grain of rice was finished at the end of the meal! haha 10/10! I loved it!

We also had fried kai lan with mushrooms which tasted really good. Though the vegetables were a little oily, they tasted fresh and the stalks were crispy! Slices of mushrooms were also added to give the dish more bulk!

I was really impressed by the standard of food here even with all the amendments they had to make to accommodate us. I liked the seating and the layout of the restaurant which was informal. Some staff were unable to speak English but with the help of a Chinese speaking friend, it worked out smile they were also nice enough to tell us which dishes were not vegetarian (even for vegetable only dishes) and took the initiative to rise to the challenge.

Food: 10/10lol
Service: 9/10lol
Pricing: 9/10lol
Ambience: 8/10

Tom yam bee hoon Smile Feb 04, 2013

Tom yam bee hoon

Tom yam bee hoon

My love for bee hoon has only grown during the years. I must say apart from satay bee hoon, my favourite has got to be Tom yam bee hoon! I love the aroma of Tom Yam and have always adored Tom yam soup. This was my first time trying it from this stall and I must say, it was pretty good! The been hoon had a couple of shredded vegetables, been sprouts and mock meat. That was basically it. I loved the fragrant smell of tom yam in the bee hoon as well, it was also a little more spicy than the normal bee hoon. The economic bee hoon probably has a better variety of vegetables/sides though. However, I did like this bee hoon. The stall owner was also friendly which enticed me to come back for more! smile I've only seen this stall open till lunch though!
