Charlie Brown Cafe Cry Mar 10, 2012
Categories : Café | Burgers and Sandwiches | Kids-Friendly

The concept of Charlie Brown Cafe is really interesting. There are pictures of Peanuts characters everywhere, even found on your food! They do have interesting foam art of various characters for their coffee drinks. I'm sure fans of Peanuts will appreciate the experience. But that's about all the positive things I have to say about the cafe.

The food here isn't up to mark. In fact, I think you can prepare these items at home, with the help of your microwave oven at less cost. There is nothing special about the breakfast set of sausages, eggs and two wholemeal slices of bread they serve here. In fact, the kitchen at this cafe is so small, they prepare food with very little fuss, and it shows in their food. I think you can replicate the same thing at home. Their sandwiches were also simply toasted bread with slices of lettuce and tomatoes and meat filling which is ok for non fussy eaters. What i'm trying to say, is that these food items do not justify the price you are paying for a meal here. You are just paying money to surround yourself with Snoopy and friends.

Chicken Hot Pot.  Cry Jan 19, 2012
Categories : Sichuan | Restaurant | Steamboat/Hot Pot | Kids-Friendly

We had the Couple Set which was essentially two types of mini hot pot- The "Scandalously Spicy Shrimp" and their signature Chicken hotpot. Each mini hot pot is meant for 1 person. This set costs about $30 (including service and GST). I did not find this meal satisfactory and it's quite overpriced for two hotpot.

The prawn hot pot was interesting. The prawns served were big and succulent. The prawns were deep fried before being placed in the hotpot. Tucked underneath the prawns were fries and some celery and cucumber slices, drenched in a sambal based gravy. The fries were surprisingly good, fried to a perfect crispy golden brow. But the fries at the bottom would have been drenched in the sambal/tom yum gravy, making it soggy and less palatable.

The chicken hot pot, very much like claypot chicken contains bits of chicken served in black sauce and bits of capsicum, onion and celery. The chicken hot pot is simply overrated. The chicken meat was really normal, not much meat, lots of bones. The sauce was too salty.

Apparently, the staff can add water to your hotpot and you can order optional items like vegetables and other steamboat items to add into your hotpot. Each item costs about $1.50-$3.50.

In sum, food here is not worth it. Go for cheaper (and tastier) claypot chicken options from nearby food courts or go for steamboat buffet if you are craving for steamboat.

On the positive side, the service here was not too bad. The waiters are generally attentive, occasionally checking and adjusting the flames of the hotpot if it gets too big.

Spending per head: Approximately $30(Dinner)

Slice Cry Jan 05, 2012

Categories : Italian | Restaurant | Pasta

I read about this place in 8Days, but frankly, the pizzas aren't very impressive.

This joint invested in this special oven that heats up pizzas very quickly. They put each rectangular slice of pizza in this paper/aluminum foil wrap bag, pop it into the oven and serve it straight to you. It's does feel a bit like subway. The pizzas are really overpriced and the quality isn't fantastic. I had the tom yum flavor pizza which wasn't really tom yum in flavor, except for the chili flakes. The pizza is thin crust but not crispy enough. The tom yum sauce base was really rather bland and did not have much of the spicy - sour taste as expected from tom yum flavor. There was generous amount of cheese but it would be better if it melted a bit more. Perhaps the only good point was that there seems to be a lot of prawns, squid and mussels, the main ingredients, in the pizza.

Minced meat noodles OK Nov 21, 2013
Categories : Singaporean | Hawker Centre | Noodles

A bowl of minced meat noodles is perhaps one of the most homely, comforting food to have. This stall offers their minced meat noodles in soup or dry versions and I decided to opt for a small bowl of  soup noodles ($2.50). Service was relatively quick (perhaps because there weren't many customers). Served in traditional bowls, the noodle soup was not overly flavorful. There was some hint of pork broth in the soup, but otherwise it's rather bland. There were rather scant ingredients- noodles, minced meat and two wantons. The noodles are the highlight for me- it's the yellow chewy QQ noodles that are I really enjoyed with the minced meat. There seemed to be rather few bits of minced meat- I realized it's found in the bottom of the bowl- so stir your noodles well to fully enjoy this dish!

Maki-San OK Nov 08, 2013

Categories : Japanese | Sushi/Sashimi | Halal | Salads/ Acai Bowl

Located at the basement of the Cathay, this shop reminds me of the "subway" of sushi- where you can customize and choose the ingredients of your sushi roll. We zoomed into ordering a mega San ($9.90) which promises a wrap sushi with 5 ingredients, 1 special, 1 sprinkle and 1 house sauce. Customizing your sushi is fun here and we had a lot of did imagining our desired sushi- unfortunately the roll we choose came out a little confused. We had roasted mushroom, japanese omelette, avocado, to book and tempura enoki mushroom mashed in yuzu honey vinaigrette. Sounds tasty on paper, but the combined effect was really mis mash- the flavours stood out individually but did not gel well together. I would recommend getting their tempura items- such as soft shell crab- as it is deep fried fresh on the spot. It was one of theore distinct ingredients that tasted good. I would stay away from the turkey bacon bits, as it contributed to a smoky taste that I didn't quite enjoy in my sushi roll. All in all, it was a self service, where you get too pick and choose a plethora of ingredients, but the end product may not be as tasty as it seems on paper!
