Sid makes chewy cookies  OK May 15, 2013
Categories : Bakery | Desserts and Cakes

Tonight I was finally able to try Cookies For Sid. I received a box of 6 from a neighbour and there were several flavours in there, such as White Choc Macadamia, Nutella, Mocha Espresso and the classic Choc Chip.

The best was definitely Nutella, although they could've been a little more generous with the nutella. The cookies are palm-sized and they're more on the chewy side. They're not the best in the world but you definitely won't be getting horrid cookies here. In other words: it's a safe choice!

Heavenly cakes! Smile May 13, 2013
Categories : Japanese | Bakery

Dropped by for a friend's birthday celebration on a quiet Sunday afternoon. We arrived around 4 but most of the cakes were already sold out so be warned: come early to avoid disappointment!

We had six (extremely pretty) cakes in total, all were different except for one flavour that was repeated. Good thing actually - cos everyone at the table seemed to love that particular flavour the most!

Kinabaru - coconut mousse with passionfruit centre

This was the flavour that we got 2 slices of. Everyone really enjoyed this one, it's fruity and very light. Well, actually, most of Kki's cakes are light! The crumbly base was excellent.

Emily - champagne mousse with wild strawberry centre

This one was my favourite of the lot. I love alcohol-infused stuff and strawberry-anything so this just sealed the deal for me. This cake's more on the cold side so eat it fast.

Fromage Melon (left) - cheese mousse with rock melon centre and Onigiri (right) - basil infused milk chocolate mousse with blood orange centre

The Fromage Melon was so-so, couldn't really taste the cheese. Definitely tasted more rock melon. As for the Onigiri, this took the award for "Most Creative Flavour" for us - who uses basil in cake? Only Kki! Super refreshing choice!

Cafe Dumo - chocolate coffee mousse with praline centre

This is probably one of Kki's slightly heavier cakes. It may seem like an average coffee choco cake but once you stick your fork in you'd understand that it's not. The exterior is so delicate and a tad bitter and it adds this nice contrast to the thick, sweet praline centre. It takes a lot of skill to make something so heavy well-balanced like this.

The milk tea - pretty light, more tea-ish than milky, a little too diluted for my liking but still satisfying.

I can see myself returning to Kki over and over again. They also make their cakes in different sizes so you know what to do the next time you're in need of a damn good birthday cake for special someone ;)

Great choc souffle Smile Apr 26, 2013

Came here after dinner for desserts and boy, was it HOT. That's what I notice about the area around The Pier at Robertson. Plus, Laurent Cafe's air conditioning wasn't working so we had to sit outside - doh!

Anyway, we ordered the choc souffle ($18+). Yes, it's pretty expensive for dessert but I trust LB to produce good choc - and guess what? I had no regrets! The souffle turned out pretty good. It actually wasn't very sweet. It comes with raspberry sorbet and a side of low-fat (maybe even non-fat - not too sure) milk to pour into the souffle. What you get is a lovely chocolate mash - think choc lava cake only wetter. Takes a while to be ready, about 15-20 mins, but I think it's worth the wait.

I decided to bring my boyfriend here for a surprise dinner on his birthday. We were in Italy a month back and we both loved the Florentine steak we had in Florence. Bistecca was an obvious choice for the celebrations because it's the only place in SG where you can get Florentine steak - and he was missing Italy so much!

The bread we had before the main event. Paired with olive oil, it was lightly salted and very fresh. Pretty addictive.

Then arrived the star of the evening... the Florentine steak ($178+)!

It states in the menu that it's good for 2-3, but I think 3 is the right number. Don't underestimate it! It was seriously enourmous. The doneness we chose was medium rare, but we kinda wished we had selected medium instead. Still, it was great and we especially loved the rock salt seasoning. Added that extra oomph to the meat.

The dipping sauces that came with the steak. From left to right (starting from the red one) - hot pepper sauce, garlic and mayo sauce, pea sauce (I think?) and mushroom sauce. Out of all, our favourite was the garlic and mayo. Second choice for me was the mushroom.

On a side note, the service at Bistecca is extremely good. They took the initiative to drop by several times to ask if everything was OK, even offering to give us more sauce since dipping sauce is something that comes in small quantities. They were very, very attentive and topped up water pretty quickly. The boss/manager is also very approachable - he offered us each a handshake at the end of our meal when we exited the restaurant. That's rare indeed! smile

We ordered some sides as well because if not, it'd be plain meat. We had the silky mash potato and the potato gratin (not pictured). Both were fab but the potato gratin stood out more than the mash. It was done very well. Super delish!

Admittedly, the steak is no match for the real thing in Florence. Over there it's super buttery and simply melts in your mouth. But then again, looking at SG's lack of such fresh ingredients - you can't really blame anyone, can you? I'd still come back to Bistecca though!

Pretty place, below average food Cry Apr 22, 2013

Categories : English | European | Steaks and Grills

Q&M has long been on my list of must-visit places. I finally dropped by for lunch today, and boy, was I disappointed by the food and the service (staff all had this unpleasant look on their faces, like they didn't want to be there at all, not attentive too)

I ordered the lamb shank. It had the Chef's Recommendation logo beside it so I had high expectations. Unfortunately, the lamb was undercooked and the meat looked a little too pale. The sauce wasn't that great either - it just lacked punch.

The mash potato on the other hand, was pretty good. Would've been better if they had added more butter - but still not bad.

Our total bill was $72+. That's extremely pricey for 2 main dishes and one drink (coke is like, $6). Overpriced but I may come back to give the fish & chips a try, since it's such an iconic English dish. But not anytime soon!
