Underrated, fantastic place! Smile Jun 12, 2013

Fukuichi at TripleOne Somerset has got to be the most underrated Japanese restaurant, in town at least. Nestled in a quiet corner, in a quiet part of town, it's easy to miss. Japanese cuisine is synonymous with clean cuts, elegant plating and/or presentation and refined tastes. Fukuichi embodies this very spirit with its signature sushi and iconic sashimi platters. They also well-stocked with a range of sakes and Japanese alcohol that I'm pretty sure would impress the sake lovers.

With a reservation at 7.30, we arrived slightly early, but was still ushered to a bar-top seat that the staff had already prepared for us.The interior is distinctly japanese, with marbled table tops, hints of bamboo and wood. Service isn't top notch, but they are generally polite and courteous. Besides, we came for the food, not the staff!

The exterior of the restaurant also has 3 large sake barrels on display outside! An interesting touch which we felt was unique.

The bar gives us a lovely view of the sushi chefs at work, expertly slicing the raw fish with even strokes, resulting in fish slices of perfect consistency!

We ordered the Bento Set A for $40 (this is the most expensive bento set because of what it consists of!), which comprises sashimi, assorted sushi, grilled salmon with roe, tempura, an appetiser dish and miso soup. We also ordered two pieces of Mekajiki (swordfish sushi) for $8 and their signature Seared Salmon Sushi for $22 (for 8 pieces). The prices are a tad pricey but when the dishes came, we fully comprehended why we were paying just that extra bit for our food.
Appetiser

Appetiser

The starter was a serving of Japanese style salad, in a light/tangy miso dressing. It tasted more sour than other Japanese style salads, so if you like your food really tangy -this one's for you. The cold jellyfish was mediocre, but proved to be a refreshing appetiser.
Bento Set

Bento Set

The Bento Set came in 3 portions -the appetiser and the 2 bento boxes. The first bento box had 3 components -roe covered sushi, a sashimi assortment (prawn, tuna and some fish I did not recognise!), and a sushi assortment with raw fish. The sushi impressed me because the lightly vinegared rice was so well shaped and it complemented the fresh fish. The fish was firm, not overly frozen nor wet, and was so delightfully tasty in its pure, unseasoned form. Delicious. The prawn and sashimi deserve a special mention. The prawns were creamy and the sashimi came in generous, thick slices -a truly treat...before I knew it, we had polished off that entire platesad
Swordfish Sushi

Swordfish Sushi

Swordfish is one of my favourite fish apart from the usual tuna and salmon. Swordfish is firmer and less creamy, but the freshness really shines through, especially when its delicious, cold cut is a refreshing change from the creamier salmon belly. It's a fantastic contrast to anything fried and cloying, making this one of my top clean-eating picks! My companion was trying swordfish for the first time and he commented that the 'clean taste of the swordfish is really uplifting'! Definitely recommending this to everyone! The salmon and tuna go for around $6-7 per pair, and there are premium items such as sea urchin on their menu. Only for those feeling indulgent!
Bento Set

Bento Set

(Cont Bento) The second portion of the bento included the cooked food -grilled salmon with a layer of roe smeared on it, and assorted tempura. The tempura was the only mediocre dish in our dinner for that day, but it was still of a decent standard. The outside of the tempura was light and crisp while the inside still retained the freshness of the ingredients -the carrots, capsicum and prawns still maintained their original tastes. The salmon was what surprised us the most -the outside had been smeared with a layer of salmon(?) roe, giving the fish an even creamier taste. The flakes of salmon just slide off when your chopsticks gently pick at the salmon, and the savoury Japanese-soy style sauce has a taste consistent with expertly made teriyaki dips. Heavenly.
Seared Salmon Roll

Seared Salmon Roll

The seared salmon sushi is on the pricier side with 8 pieces for $22, but its completely worth it. Rolled by the masters with japanese cucumbers and avocado, with the salmon torched before serving, the fish has a slightly smoky smell to it. When you sink your teeth in however, it's a fusion of flavours with creamy textures combined with the burnt aroma of semi-cooked fish. Delicious as it looks -everyone should try this! It's one of their more popular sushi orders and nearly every table has one plate of this.

The Bento is great for sharing -perfect for 2 people, so you get to order other sushi and try other stuff too! This bento also gives the widest variety (you can get a bento set for around $20+, but the variety of the bento isn't as vast and the quality of the dishes are less premium too), but also ensures that you get the best of everything. Fantastic deal! Fukuichi also offers a range of hot dishes, but we say skip that. Go straight to the ala carte sushi and signature rolls -try the seared salmon, or live to regret it!

The place is pretty spacious, but it can get a teeny bit crowded especially on Friday and weekend nights, you may want to call and make a reservation ahead! This is also one of the places where bar top dining isn't cramped and stuffy, there's ample foot room and space for the dishes, and it's interesting watching the chefs at work (at least you know how your sashimi is being prepared!!). Fukuichi serves great, fresh Japanese cuisine with refined flavours for the discerning. It may not be on the highest end of Japanese fare available locally, but it comes close to the best value for quality (the bill came up to around $82 in total for 2 people.)

BEST LUNCH!! Smile May 02, 2013
Categories : Zi Char

On a Public Holiday, the bustling chaos of the usual office crowd is non-existent at the top floor of Far East Plaza. My family & I took this opportunity to go to Susan Chan for lunch. The small eatery is nothing much to look at, save for the signboard that blares 'Susan Chan Food' at you, there is really nothing that will draw your attention to this place (maybe except for the snaking queues during weekday lunchtimes...).

We ordered a stir fried kailan, spinach tofu with enoki mushrooms, fried boneless pork ribs in salted yolk sauce and a Szechuan soup. The bill came up to $38 in total, including 3 plates of rice and 3 glasses of warm barley.

The spinach tofu and enoki mushrooms came in this light brown sauce that was simply heavenly. There is no way to describe it or put it into words but the taste is really heavenly. It has a slight wok-hei to it, and the tofu was also fragrant. The mushrooms were stringy and starchy (Being drenched in the sauce) and the spinach wasn't overcooked. Delicious.

The pork ribs with salted egg yolk sauce is definitely a 5/5. Do ask for the boneless one because it comes with 5 large pork rib fillets, immersed in this salty-sweet sauce. It smells buttery and salty, tastes creamy but not overpowering (you can still taste the crispy skin of the fried pork rib)...topped off with curry leaves served on a bed of lettuce -it's remarkably delicious. Exceeded expectations by a mile.

The stir fried kailan was very tasty, still crisp and very refreshing. The sauce wasn't too heavy and complemented the fresh greens deliciously. We polished the entire plate!!

The soup was thick, but not overly starchy. It was topped with fresh spring onion and chilli oil. When mixed in with the tofu, wood ear and mushrooms in the soup -it becomes a hot soup that packs a punch. It's savoury, served piping hot. One of the best szechuan soups I've drunk! For just $5, this bowl is thick and substantial enough for 3 people to share.

Definitely coming back here again, the food is heavenly -super tasty and well-prepared. Much thought has been put into each dish to make sure the ingredients complement each other perfectly. A holy matrimony of flavours, fusing together in a single dish. Even though we had to wait approx 15 minutes for our food, it was definitely worth the wait.

a little wandering.. Smile Apr 08, 2013

Categories : American | Bars/Lounges | Hotel | Restaurant | Burgers and Sandwiches | Brunch

A little wandering on a Sunday afternoon led my family to Suprette at Kam Leng Hotel. What a sweet, sweet find! The decor is very retro but also chic at the same time -a nice cross between an American diner and olden-times Singapore, complete with 80s music soundtrack playing in the background!

Service was good, the waiter apologised for the faulty order machine (as a result our orders were delayed in being sent to the kitchen), and he also asked us about our meal after we'd finished -very friendly!

We ordered a Baby Spinach salad with Poached Egg & Brioche ($12), a Chicken Pot Pie ($14 -do allow approx 15min for preparation) and a Suprette Burger ($19).

The salad dressing with bacon was immaculate -hint of balsamic vinegar, olive oil...and is that a touch of caramelised onion i taste? Deliciously refreshing, went well with the poached egg that wasn't too runny -just the way I liked it. The whole dish was very palatable and the taste was definitely there. Slightly disappointed there was only one slice of toast though, but I could overlook that given the quality of everything else.

The Chicken Pot Pie was interesting, it came served in a medium-depth dish (It's the traditional kind of plates that you can find at grandma's house smile ). The pastry was flaky, the chicken was tender, the filling also included potatoes, celery and carrots. The filling had a creamy sauce, that you just might get sick of if you'd finish the entire pot pie even that it was really substantial -sharing this would be perfect. I like how the potatoes still had the skin on. Gave the filling texture!

The Suprette burger had a huge, thick, fat beef patty that was cooked well -wasn't overcooked, slightly pink and while I don't eat beef, my dad commented that it was very tasty and juicy, and the whole burger had a lot of "bite". The portion of fries were also super super generous! Three of us shared the fries with ketchup, they were freshly fried and nicely salted. Definitely a good choice for burger and fries fans.

All in all, I definitely would say this diner has a great, quaint ambience be it for coffee or brunch. The food is at reasonable prices and the taste is really super too! Definitely will wanna bring friends here next time.

oodles of noodles for me :> Smile Mar 26, 2013

Categories : Vietnamese

Visited the wheelock branch of NamNam for my Pho fix! What I love about NamNam is that the ingredients used are all so fresh and the soup tastes so crisp and tasty. I always order the chicken pho when i'm there, (not being picky, but I always happen to favour noodle soup over bread, and I don't eat beef so chicken it is!) and I never leave the place disappointed! Tonight was no exception, I ordered the chicken pho($7.90) and the order arrived promptly (<10min).

There are many things I like about NamNam's pho and one of them has got to be the freshness of the chicken. It is not overcooked and it is really FRESH, not frozen chicken, which I really like. I also get to put fish sauce in my soup, authentic vietnamese style, and have my chicken generously doused in their special chilli/hoisin sauce. My favourite part of the pho is probably the amount of spring onions, coriander and onions swimming in my delightful vietnamese broth -simply heavenly! The special thing about the soup is that it is so refreshing and tasty, it doesn't leave you feeling sickened by the taste -it has a tangy zest to it brought about by the lime, and it's just the right balance of salty and sour. The noodles are nothing to shout about, but they're not overcooked and I can slurp them up with the soup, so no complaints there.

I always leave feeling satisfied, and the servers are always so nice. There's usually a queue outside but turnover is high and we usually get a table within 15 minutes tops. The servers are always patiently explaining how the order system works and they always thank us for waiting when we order/pay at the counter. I appreciate that -to face high crowd volume every day but still greet customers with a smile on their face! Gotta love NamNam with its great food and nice service smile

The skinny on skinny pizza Smile Sep 18, 2013
Share on TwitterShare on Facebook
Categories : Restaurant | Pasta | Kids-Friendly

The original thin crust pizza from Skinny Pizza at Wheelock has a decor slightly different from that of Raffles City (where it is way more cramped). This outlet has a more nydc feel, with tiled floors, wooden chairs and tables, and quirky decoration finishes all over the walls.

I loved the lights in this one ^ It really gives the place a jazzy feel!

Skinny Pizza offers a good range of Western cuisine, ranging from their signature pizzas to their pastas as well as sides (which include corn on the cob, truffle fries etc), and it's great to share so you should definitely bring friends along for this place.

We ordered a Squid Ink Pizza ($25), a Ginger Butter Chicken Pizza ($23) and a portion of Truffle Fries ($7) to share. There is a good mix of both fusion and western pizzas so there is something to suit everyone.

The Squid Ink Pizza is one of their signatures and is definitely a must-try. The base is completely black, and it has a nice refined taste different from the normal flour crust. It is topped with wild rocket, squid, prawns and just a splash of balsamic vinegar for that added flavour. This pizza has a surprisingly light taste -the freshness of the seafood is evident because of the minimal seasoning. Highly recommended.

The truffle fries portion was a little small for $7, and while I am not a fan of shoestring fries, truffle oil lovers will fangirl over this. You can smell the truffle oil even before the fries are right under your nose. The wafting scent is pure heaven for any truffle fries fan. The fries are served hot (a bit oily though), and really crispy (more crispy than fluffy in fact). I would like my fries a bit more potatoey though.

The Ginger Butter Chicken had a distinctive aroma of Indian curry spices. There were chicken chunks as well as fresh greens topping this crust. While it was undeniably tasty, I was a bit torn over deciding if this chicken resembled 'butter chicken' more or 'curry chicken'. It did not seem the possess the intense spiciness and heat of curry, nor did it have a particularly rich buttery flavour to speak out. A pity!

If you do head down to Skinny Pizza, we recommend you go for the Squid Ink Pasta and the Truffle Fries. The Aglio Olio also has a generous serving of seafood, so if you're craving some pasta you may wish to consider this. They also serve iced water, which is constantly refilled by the attentive staff smile
