Hidden Eurasian Gem Smile Oct 21, 2011
Categories : European | Fusion | Café

This is a hidden cafe serving Eurasian food. It is located in the Kun Yan Methodist Church. It is 1 min walk from the exit A of Bras Basah MRT & very convenient.

The cafe is bright and air-con simply decorated with simple table and chair. Corner of the entrance had a sofa sitting and in the middle it has a long bar top dinning table.

The owner Mary Gomez serves Eurasian Food such as Chicken Debal, Feng, Eurasian Curry Puff, Salted Fish Achar and Vegetable Achar. Her value for money daily set lunch is $7 which is a choice of main dish and a drink of either lime juice, lce lemon tea, hot tea or coffee and desert for the day.

Fry Vegetables,Chicken Debal & Pepper Pork Belly

Depending of the day of the week, she has 1 fixed main course served with rice depending on the day of the week. For example, Wed is Chicken Curry Debal and Thurs is chicken Buah Keluak. The other main course for the day is not fixed. On the day we were there we had Chicken Curry Debal and Pepper Pork Bell similar to Soya Sauce Pork. Check it out on http://www.marykafe.info/Marys_Kafe/Menu.html

The Chicken Curry Debal taste is similar to what my aunty used to cooked, but we called it the Curry chicken Devil as it can be really spicy hot. For these dishes, she put in pieces of sausage beside the chicken and potato. The gravy is a light spicy curry with no coconut milk. This dish is normally served during X'mas period using the leftover of turkey, roast pork which are added to the curry chicken. Mary version is tasty but a little oily, I would prefer to remove the chicken skin so that it is healthier.

The Pepper Pork Belly is similar to Soya Sauce Pork but the pork belly is cut into big chunk & cooked with soy sauce & lots of pepper. I love the yummy gravy to go with rice but due to using Pork belly it is too oily for me.

We also ordered a plate of Kueh Pie Ti for $3. The shell of the Kueh Pie Ti was commercial made & filling was quite good.
Sugee Cake

Sugee Cake

The Sugee is very good and has a nice buttery and graining texture. Highly recommend at $12 a loaf of cake. If you like it with icing and marzipan, you will have to order the whole cake in advance starting from $42 for about 1.4kg.
Pineapple Tart 40cents each

Pineapple Tart 40cents each

Highly recommended Pineapple Tart has a buttery melt in the mouth pastry and generous pineapple jam with the right sweetness level.

Recommended Dish(es):  Chicken Curry Debal, Pepper Pork Belly, Feng, Pineapple Tart

Affordable Gourmet Dishes Smile Oct 13, 2011
Share on TwitterShare on Facebook
Categories : Singaporean Chinese | Singaporean Western | Kids-Friendly

This Han Cafe also serves the gourmet dishes beside the usual local and western dishes.

The cafe is located between Chinatown and Raffles Place in the Great Eastern building. The place is quite big and has nice modern decor.
Smoked Duck Breast $13.80

Smoked Duck Breast $13.80

Dad picked smoked duck breast which is serve with nice salad and mashed potato. Tried his duck which is tender and lean except for the fat near the skin. Like the salad which has orange vinaigrette taste with cherry tomato and raisins which gives a nice texture.
Boneless Chicken Thigh with Teriyaki Sauce $11.80

Boneless Chicken Thigh with Teriyaki Sauce $11.80

I ordered the Boneless Chicken Thigh with Teriyaki sauce. The chicken fillet was pan fried till slightly brown and serve with the yummy Teriyaki sauce.
Chicken Caesar Salad $9.80

Chicken Caesar Salad $9.80

The Chicken Caesar salad was served with slices of chicken on top a plate of raw vegetables and hard boiled eggs with crispy bread crotons to give a crunchy texture.
Hor Fun $7.80

Hor Fun $7.80

Mum decided on local flavours which is Hor Fun. The Hor Fun is 'wok hei' fried flat noodle served with thick gravy of seafood and meats.
Earl Grey Raspberry

Earl Grey Raspberry

I ended the meal with an Earl Grey Raspberry cake from their bakery section. The cake presentation look like hotel standard but taste is not up it. It is not bad but does not have the nice cream filling and texture of those 5 stars hotel bakery. At least the price is about 1/3 those of top pastry shops.

Overall the gourmet dishes we tried were good and affordable at less than $15 and nicely presented.

Crystal Soon Kueh (Hakka Soon Ban)

Crystal Soon Kueh (Hakka Soon Ban)

This stall sells Hakka snacks. It has Soon Ban (Crystal Soon Kueh), Abacus, and Glutinous Rice.

The yummy crystal clear Soon Ban skin is very chewy and the generous filling of turnips, bits of yellow beancurds is tasty. It only cost $1 a piece and you can eat with sweet black sauce and chilli.

Taste of Penang Smile Jul 15, 2011

Categories : Malaysian | Restaurant | Noodles | Rice

This is the branch of the popular Penang Kitchen from Coronation Plaza.
Inside the Cafe

Inside the Cafe

The cafe is nicely decorated with the wall painted in orange and beige colour. It makes the place look bright and cheery. On the wall are lots of review from different publication.
Iced Nutmeg $3.20

Iced Nutmeg $3.20

Iced Penang Coffee $3.80

Iced Penang Coffee $3.80

I ordered the Ice Nutmeg and dad ordered the Iced Penang Coffee to go with the food. The Iced Nutmeg drink was very refreshing, and I like it so much that I bought a bottle of the Nutmeg syrup at $6.50 to DIY at home. It is stated in the menu that it aids in digestion and sooth the throat. Dad said his Ice Penang Coffee was very good.
Penang Sampler $13

Penang Sampler $13

We ordered the Penang Sampler which consist of 2 rolls of Lor Bak and 4 pieces of Belachan Wings. The Lor Bak is better than what we had eaten in the Penang's famous stall. I find the Belachan wings have only a light hint of the taste. I would have preferred stronger Belachan taste.
Penang Assam Laksa $8.30

Penang Assam Laksa $8.30

The Assam Laksa was very good. chopstick It uses the right type of thick rice vermicelli unlike some place I got udon instead. The gravy is thick with lots of fish and not too sour. It is topped with "Hae Ko" (prawn paste), mint leaves, thin slice of cucumber and pineapple. I asked for extra Hae Ko and the waitress gave me another saucer of Hae Ko.
Penang Char Kway Teow $8.30

Penang Char Kway Teow $8.30

I had a taste of Dad's Penang Char Kway Teow tongue. The portion is quite big and has bean sprouts, prawn and has the "Wok Hei" taste. It also uses the finer flat rice noodle and it is the white version.

Generally all the dishes we tried are of very high standard and the portion is quite filling. It you want to try many dishes, aim to share the noodle or rice items. Prices are on the high sides but the high quality makes up for it. It is one of the best Penang foods that I have eaten in Singapore so far. Must go back to try Penang Hokkien Prawn Noodle Soup, which I heard is very good.

Recommended Dish(es):  Assam Laksa, Penang Char Kway Teow, Penang Hokkien Prawn Noodle Soup,Lor Bar, Iced Nutmeg

Peranakan Delight @Changi Airport Smile Jul 08, 2011

Menu

Menu

This is the new cafe at T2 of Changi Airport outside the Arrival Hall. It has taken over the place that was formally occupied by Polar Cafe.
Menu

Menu

Chinta Manis means “Sweet Love" in Malay. It serves Peranakan food, kuehs, sweet and savoury pastries.
Decor

Decor

The place is decorated with simple marble table with Cyan colour chairs. It has colourful peranakan tiles and replica nyonya ware as decor.
Peranakan Tiles

Peranakan Tiles

We ordered 4 different Platters to try from the Nyonya Delicacies Menu. The Nasi Peranakan Istimewa , Chicken Rendang Platter, Prawn Sambal Platter & Bibik Nyo's Ayam Klio (Coconut Curry Chicken) Platter.
Nasi Peranakan Istimewa $8.80

Nasi Peranakan Istimewa $8.80

The house special is Nasi Peranakan Istimewa which consist of flavoured rice with a small bowl of soup. It has Chicken Rendang, Prawn Sambal, omelette, achar, coconut serunding, plain fish curry and a palm size prawn cracker. This is a value for money meal at $8.80 which also includes coffee/tea and kueh of the day.

The prawn cracker was of the good Indonesian quality but it was starting to go soft. Maybe should keep in air-tight container before serving to customer. I would prefer Nasi Kunyit with this set instead of the biryani rice. The Achar was a bit sweet unlike the Nyonya spicy version. Coconut Serunding was moist . The prawn sambal was not too spicy and chicken rendang was tender and has a nice dry curry.
Bibik Nyo's Ayam Klio $5.80

Bibik Nyo's Ayam Klio $5.80

All other platter comes with yummy Nasi Kunyit, Achar, Coconut Serunding and a bowl of curry. The other 3 platters does not come with drink but you can top-up $1 for the house special which includes Tamarind Lemongrass, Barley etc. The platter set taste quite good but I like the Nyonya Kueh best. As it is not too sweet and has all the right texture.
Prawn Sambal Platter $6.20

Prawn Sambal Platter $6.20

For dessert, we ordered a packet of Ondeh Ondeh at $2.50 and 3 different choices to share. The kueh comes in bit size of about 1 inch square. It is of a good quality, better than those you get in the hawker centre.
Ondeh Ondeh,Chendol Agar Agar,Sri Kaya,Kueh Bingka

Ondeh Ondeh,Chendol Agar Agar,Sri Kaya,Kueh Bingka

The Chendol Agar Agar tongue has 2 layers, with the top layer of Gula Melaka jelly and the bottom layer of coconut milk jelly mixed with red bean and green worm. The texture is not too hard or soft and the sweetness is just right. Even the Ondeh Ondeh uses the good quality Gula Melaka. You can buy a box of assorted Nonya kueh at $20 a packet or individual at 90 cents each.

Overall this is a nice cosy cafe with tasty food, simple decor and prices are reasonable as you can get breakfast set for less than $5 and lunch or dinner set at less than $10. Good place to grab a bit just before you fly as it is open early at 7.30am and close at 10.30pm

If I ever at the airport in the early morning, I would try their breakfast set or the Nyonya curry puff.
