Porridge the Choice Smile Apr 01, 2013

this is probably the only chicken rice stall in Singapore we know of that only offers porridge only and not rice. But its popularity with diners only serve to emphasize the point that they know their food well. Offering white cut chicken and raw fish as the signature items, diners will usually order a bowl of plain porridge to go with it. The porridge comes in the typical noodle bowl so its quite a mouthful. My preferred style of eating it will be to enhance the flavor of the porridge with the chicken sauce provided. Then i will dip the chicken piece into the porridge to heat it up before eating it. It works really well for me since i've always prefer hot food going into the mouth. One could definitely feel the smoothness of the chicken and the appetizing porridge. You can definitely eat it for any of your 3 meals, not just lunch or dinner.

Rare Opportunity Smile Apr 01, 2013

Have always wanted to try this but gave up at sight of the long queue. The opportunity came where there was no queue at this stall, it was 845pm already. Though i'm not a fish lover but decided to try this ikan panggang after seeing quite a few table of diners eating it. At $5.50 ($4.95 after kopitiam card discount), you can one grilled fish, rice with curry sauce, some vege, a sunny side-up and a bowl of soup. The fish given is more of a fish fillet than a whole fish. The fish is dipped into their special sweet sauce after grilling on a bbq stove. the sauce "stains" the fish well and combined perfectly with it. i like the fact the fish is grilled to bite worthy - crispy in texture. The sambal chilli offered at the counter is also worth mentioning, similar to yukee type with ikan bilis inside, it just brings out the indonesian cuisine very well. The soup that came along is a disappointment though with no ingredients in it and tasted very blant. I would love to try the chicken version next time, which looks a little like breaded fried chicken (imagine fish and chip texture look alike drumstick)

Soon Gone Smile Mar 27, 2013

There's a lot of hype about this place ever since news broke about them closing down in june 22nd, boss is retiring in wealth smile . Visited the place with a few colleagues, signs of the viral message online is apparently with the shop packed with hungry foodies and a small queue at the ordering counter.

Pretty standard items for 4pax to share, half a duck $20, toufu $6 and kang kong $6. Total bill was $38 including the drinks $1.50 each. These are the must order items. I had always thought that the guy then collects the bill is the boss but he's not, the one at the stall front, dishing out the plates of boneless duck is. Anyway over here you eat your rice in bowls instead of plate and remember to eat your duck meat with the sambal and chilli sauce mix. For $10/pax spending, i find it a tad expensive though. By the way, its pretty troublesome to find a parking lot also, options are the few lots infront of the stall and the residential area at the back.

Types of Bowl Smile Mar 26, 2013

Categories : Taiwanese | Chinese Desserts | Bubble Tea/ Tea

Me and my partner have always been wondering the difference between those that comes in disposable bowls vs those that came in the ceramic bowls. Coz some outlets only serve the disposable ones even if you dine in (Bugis+) outlet. I thought it was a case of the disposable bowl is for the shaved ice version but i was wrong. Apparently disposable bowl is for take away or unless specified. Somehow we had a perception that the disposable bowl one holds more than the ceramic one smile . Anyway the signature blackball dessert at $4.90 did not disappoint, the multiple pearl, yam and sweet potato combination appeals well. Certainly a must to have milk added.

Anyway they have this high stool and table which looks cool to sit in but there's only one of them

better than handy road Smile Mar 26, 2013

Just like i mentioned in my title, that sums up my experience dining at charly-t last night. First about the interior, it looks small from the outside but only fellow diners will know they actually hv an alfresco area with sofa couches and also a large flat screen tv playing MioStadium soccer shows. its also ventilated with fans but not sure if you can smoke there though.

I took the indoor seats though, and gives you a partial view to the kitchen seeing the chefs but you can't really see what they are preparing though. Proceeded to order and pay at the counter, then collect a number and wait to be served. We ordered the usual chicken cordon bleu $16.50, 1/4 kansas city bbq chicken with 2 sides $15 and molten chocolate cake $9.

The cordon bleu is served simple, with the breaded chicken dish with some fries as side dish, lemon slices and tatare sauce. Due to its nature of cooking. its hot inside but that's also the nice part. My sides were potato with bacon bits and macroni and cheese. This is where the standard seems to be different, the sides here are much tastier and well portioned than handy road. My chicken also came wel roasted yet not leaving the chicken meat too dry, something which i did not find at handy road outlet as well. But i will still have to gripe about the tiny little saucer they used to hold the accompanying dips, i ended up having to call for top up 3 times, till even the waiter seems impatient (which i give a thumbs-down for that). Molten cake was chocolate based with a scoop of vanilla ice cream and slices of strawberry, definitely a recommendation for the sweet tooth.

Service wise its mixed reaction, they were nice and courteous and gets your orders fulfilled but it was sometimes hard to get them, i have to raise my hand and gesture several times before someone eventually comes into the dining area and notice a customer calling for service. most of the time, they were not seen outside waitering but at the back kitchen. On one occasion, the kitchen staff notice even hv to prompt the waitering staff to come up after seeing me raise my hand for quite sometime and waiting in vain for someone to appear.
