Dinner at Ramen Ten Cry Nov 25, 2012
Categories : Japanese | Restaurant | Ramen | Kids-Friendly

I decided to drop by Ramen Ten for a quick dinner after work as I had a sudden craving for Japanese food. Decided to settle for a set of Salmon Sashimi with Cold Tofu from their TEISHOKU set menu, which cost me $19.20. Here's a photo of my meal:
Average

Average

Firstly, the restaurant ambience wasn't that nice. It looked average and I think it looked more like a fast food outlet or a food court. It simply does not give me a Japanese feel. The staffs service was slightly below average, with me trying to get their attention for a couple of times before I managed to get the attention of their restaurant manager, who then passed me the menu to order. The waiting time for them to serve my food was decent. I didn't wait too long for my meal to come, i think it took about 10 to 15 minutes? I can't really remember the exact duration it took. The restaurant was slightly packed too on a Monday night but I did not need to queue to get my seat. Oh ya, for our muslim friends who have a liking for Japanese food, they can visit Ramen Ten because I saw that Ramen Ten had displayed the halal certificate. From what I know so far, I think this is the first and only halal certified Japanese restaurant.

I think the food serving portion for my Salmon Sashimi with Cold Tofu was average and just nice for me. Haha but I would certainly like if they give me more salmon slices. I only saw 7 slices, which I think it's slightly expensive considering that my meal cost $19.20 and I could have obtain at least 2 plates of purely Salmon Sashimi and add on a few more plates of sushi with $19.20. The cold tofu was of course cold... But I dislike cold tofu as it's tasteless. I prefer the cold fofu from Sakae more as Sakae had added in Soy Sauce to make it tasty but Ramen Ten cold tofu is just so bland. The rice was also a turn-off as it does not taste as fragrant and it is also slightly dry. I prefer the Japanese rice from other Japanese restaurants such as Sakae or Ishi Mura or Ichiban Sushi etc. The miso soup portion was just nice, but I felt that it was slightly salty and I don't really like it. From a rating of 1 to 10 where 1 is mediocre and 10 is very yummy, I would rate my Salmon Sashimi with Cold Tofu set as a rating of 3. It was a total disappointment and at $19.20, I would have better spend my money on other food elsewhere. Opps, I forgot if I was charged with GST and service charge. If have, I think my total spending would be slightly more than $20. I am so sorry I can't really remember now.

Overall Satisfaction: 3 out of 10. If you crave for decent or nice Japanese food, in my opinion I would not recommend you to try out Salmon Sashimi with Cold Tofu set from Ramen Ten. Priced at $19.20, you would be better off if you spend this amount at other Japanese restaurants such as Sakae or Ichiban Sushi or etc. I would never order Salmon Sashimi with Cold Tofu set again. What a disappointing dinner!!! sad

Supper at Plaza Singapura Smile Nov 24, 2012
Share on TwitterShare on Facebook
Categories : Cantonese/Hong Kong | Restaurant | Chinese Desserts | Desserts and Cakes

After our walk down Orchard Road to see the Christmas trees and lighting, we boarded a bus and alighted at Plaza Singapura. Having a craving for desserts, we stop by Ji De Chi, where we ordered the Original Milk Snowy Ice dessert and also ordered the Durian with Pomelo Sago (Cold).

Here's the Original Milk Snowy Ice dessert, that cost $5.50.

I simply love the feeling of the white jelly ball bursting in my mouth when I eat it. Shiok! I don't really like the green tea glutinuous balls as I felt that the flour was too thick and the green tea flavored glutinuous balls tasted a little bitter. I love the slices of mango. Very fresh! However I think that the Original Milk Snowy Ice dessert is a little bland to my liking, despite the pink colour syrup that was spread throughout the snowy ice. I still prefer the durian or other flavors versions.

I simply love my Durian with Pomelo Sago (Cold), that cost $6.50.

My Durian with Pomelo Sago was simply heavenly. It consist of a ball of durian ice-cream, pomelo and sago. The best part is that the entire bowl was filled with pure durian pulp. It was the delicious durian pulp that makes this dessert heavenly. The durian ice-cream tasted average to me. The pomelo and sago, when mixed well with the durian pulp is nice. It was definitely well worth the money. On a scale of 1 to 10, with 0 as mediocre and 10 as very yummy, I would rate this dessert as 7.

The restaurant did not have much decoration to provide to the ambience, except the antique looking table and chairs. The service provided by their staff is mediocre as they did not bother to explain to us how to order the dessert. As we had eaten before at Ji De Chi, we know that we have to write our order on the paper before passing to the counter and making payment at the same time. But I think if we are new to Ji De Chi, we would definitely not know what to do. Unlike the Jurong Point outlet where the Jurong Point outlet staff bothers to explain to every group that eats at there, over at here, apparently their staff don't bother and I think this can be further improved.

As for the dessert price, I think it's reasonably priced as most of the desserts are priced at around $5 to $7, affordable and some of the desserts are quite yummy. I would definitely return for another visit.

Overall satisfaction: 7 out of 10.

Lunch with colleagues OK Nov 24, 2012
Categories : Thai

This is my first time eating at Thai Tantric and also my first time stepping into Orchard Towers. My first impression is that this restaurant may be a little bit hard to find as it's located at a corner on the 3rd floor. Came here to eat lunch together with my colleagues.

My Thai tea, which cost $2.

This is my first time trying out Thai tea. It has a muddy orange colour but I like the taste of it. However it was a bit too sweet.

I also ordered minced pork rice that comes with an egg and basil leaves, one of the usual dish that I would order at any Thai cafe/restaurant. Here's the photo of it:

This dish cost $6. The presentation of the dish wasn't that fantastic. It looked so plain, with an egg placed on top of the rice and the minced pork mixed with basil leave on the opposite side. To me, the food portion and taste was just nice. The minced pork and the sauce tasted nice and I like it. On a scale of 1 to 10, with 1 as mediocre and 10 as very yummy, I would give this dish a rating of 6. I like the minced pork mixed with basil leaves and egg and I think it tasted much better than the other Thai cafe situated at Far East Plaza basement.

We also ordered some chicken wings to share, which cost $10 for a plate of 7 chicken wings. I think this plate of chicken wing is a little expensive and it tasted normal too. Also, each chicken wing was oily and I don't think it will appeal to health conscious individuals. But to me, I don't mind. Haha... smile

Here's the photo of the chicken wings, which I would give a rating of 5.

Yummy Lunch Smile Nov 24, 2012
Categories : Thai

On a random Saturday afternoon, we decided to head to Ah Loy Thai. My friend had recommended me to try out as they are famous for Thai food, so we decided to head there for our today's lunch. We arrived with an empty stomach, famished and astonished to find ourselves in a queue and all the tables were fully packed in the 2 shops which this restaurant occupied.

While waiting in the queue, I decided to surf OpenRicers reviews to see what are the special or yummy dishes from this restaurant & had shortlisted 4 dishes from the 20 reviews that I had read. They are the glass noodle, Pineapple fried rice, pandan chicken and tom yum soup. Hence we placed order for this 4 dishes while we are still waiting for our seats. Luckily we only waited for 20 minutes as the owner skipped the huge group of 6 people before me and instead ushered the both of us to our seats first.

The restaurant decoration has a very Thai feel to it, with the walls decorated with famous Thai people and also there were a couple of certificates hanging proudly on their wall. I guessed the owner must have received a lot of recognition in the culinary world when he was younger.

Well, a good thing is there is no GST or service charge for this restaurant. But I have to place my order and made payment at the cashier first before they serve your food. I felt that the price of each dish was pretty reasonable. Here's the receipt for my lunch:

Here's our drink, Thai Red tea, which cost $2.20. Very smooth and fragrant. Although she found it was too sweet for her liking, but I like. Haha...

Here's our first dish, Seafood Tom Yum soup., which cost $7.50.

Wow... The Seafood Tom Yum soup was simply awesome and mind-blowing. Very yummy!!! Very aromatic!!! And the taste of the Tom Yum is simply delicious. The soup had a nice balance of sour taste & spiciness. Not forgetting the generous serving of prawns in this dish and also the huge slices of squids & oyster mushrooms. On a scale of 1 to 10, with 1 as mediocre and 10 as very yummy, I would personally rate this dish as a 8. Ah Loy Thai tom yum soup tasted much nicer than the Tom Yum soup I tried at Porns. I would definitely order this dish again on my next visit.

Here's our 2nd dish, Fried Glass Noodle, which cost $7.50.

This was another very yummy dish. As usual, the restaurant gave a generous serving of prawns and eggs too. The fried glass noodle was very aromatic and very yummy!!! Smooth, silky noodle, coupled with the other ingredients, made me slowly savored this dish. Even my girlfriend liked this dish very much. I would give a rating of 9 for the Fried Glass Noodle. While we are happily tucking into our 2 super yummy dishes, I suddenly spotted something special in my fried glass noodle. I am actually surprised to find that the chef had mixed baby shrimps into it and they are crunchy too. I seldom see chef mix baby shrimp into fried glass noodle and this is my first time seeing it. Here's the photo:

Can you see the baby shrimp mixed together with the prawn? Aren't they cute... smile

My next dish, Pineapple Fried Rice, was a total disappointment. As usual, the chef added a lot of prawns and egg into this dish.

I just felt that the Pineapple Fried Rice was not worth the $7. Firstly it doesn't taste like fried rice nor does the pineapple taste stands out distinctly. Instead what I felt for this dish is that it has a wide mixture of taste and I can't really identify it as a fried rice. Both of us had difficulty in finishing this dish but I endured and finished it up, so as not to waste the food. I won't order this dish on my next visit again. Very disappointing...

Luckily, the restaurant "redeemed" its reputation in its next dish, Pandan Chicken, which cost $10.

Honestly speaking, I do find that the Pandan Chicken was a bit pricey. $10 for 4 pieces only? That worked out to $2.50 for a small piece of chicken. Expensive... I can get a plate of chicken rice for each piece of pandan chicken. Haha. But nonetheless, I must admit that this dish was yummy too. It was much more aromatic than the Tom Yum soup or the Fried Glass Noodle. Also the chicken was nicely marinated and cooked. The tenderness of the chicken meat was just nice and certain portion of the meat is crispy while certain portion of the meat is tender. I wonder how the chef did this? I guess maybe it's because of the pandan leaves that distribute the heat unevenly throughout the meat. So certain portion that faces the heat became crispy while the top is tender and soft. Amazing skill... Overall I think this dish deserved a 8.

I almost forgot. We almost fainted when the cashier told us to be prepared to wait for 40 minutes before our food is served. Being so famished, we waited in anticipation for our first dish to be served. Luckily it didn't take as long as 40 minutes. I think our first dish arrived around 20 minutes later. So it wasn't so bad but in total we waited for 40 minutes for our first dish (20 minutes in the queue and 20 minutes from placement of order). But both of us felt that this 40 minutes wait was indeed worthwhile, except for the disappointing pineapple fried rice. Both of us will definitely visit this restaurant again. I am looking forward to trying out their other dishes. But for my next visit, I have to be well-prepared for the long wait and not turn up at this restaurant with a famished stomach.

Overall decoration of this restaurant: 7 out of 10. I think they could have done better in their decorations. But I am not too particular over it so long as the food served are yummy.

Accessibility: It was pretty accessible. It was located at Shaw Towers along Beach Road and we walked from Raflles Shopping Centre. But I reckon it will be much nearer if you walk from Suntec City to this restaurant. For people who drive, they can park at Shaw Tower carpark but I am not sure what's the hourly rate.

Service: 7 out of 10. Both the boss and lady boss were very friendly and they even promptly helped to clear the empty plates and also asked us politely whether there are any dishes that wasn't being served yet.

Overall satisfaction: 9 out of 10. I would definitely visit Ah Loy Thai restaurant again. If my friends ever ask me for yummy Thai food recommendation, Ah Loy Thai would definitely be on the top of my list. smile

Dinner at You Huak Restaurant Smile Oct 29, 2012
Share on TwitterShare on Facebook
Categories : Seafood | Zi Char

A friend recommended me to eat at this restaurant as they are currently offering a 15% discount for openrice coupon user and it's also situated near my house. This stretch of shops here is very much well known for the bai mee fen at You Huak and Shi Fu Ge is a good option as well. Anyway from the outside, you can't really tell that the place is big and it's a zi char specialist. They even serve exotic food like Buddha Jump Over the Wall etc.

I ordered my favorite sam lou hor fun (Fish Slices) and also stir fried broccoli with scallops.

I like the fact that the fish slices offered were thick and with lots of tau gay. The broccoli was also to my liking, cooked with just the right amount for a good dinner. In terms of food wise, this place seems potential, but it does not come across to me what is their number 1 signature dish. Maybe I will check out with the staff next time. Hopefully they will still have the 15% special smile

Total spending = $17, perfect for an individual share for dinner.
