Seoul yummy Smile Nov 26, 2014

Over the weekend, I had my dinner at Seoul Yummy at The Central. The restaurant is surprisingly small and I would recommend that you make a reservation if you are coming in larger groups to ensure that there are seats available. We walked in at around 7pm on a Saturday and the restaurant was half filled.
The menu is quite comprehensive and there are sets meals as well, which are quite reasonably priced. We ordered a side of kimchi pancakes to share, and our own main menu item. The main dish will come with 6 side dishes and I loved 4 out of 6 of the side dishes which is great since the sides do not go to waste and I could also have second servings.

I got the spicy dry Korean buckwheat noodles. The noodles come with spicy sauce, and half boiled egg, cucumbers, beef. The noodles are delish with the spicy sauce and I would definitely recommend it for spicy lovers. The noodles maintain their bite and is not clumpy as well. The ingredients to this dish are simple, but put together, it is a very comforting dish that I would not hesitate to order again. Besides, the kimchi pancake is also very yummy. It is not too oily and the pancake is slightly chewy and savory. The sour sauce accompanying the pancake adds more tang to the pancake. I will definitely recommend this place to my friends!

Taiyaki Smile Nov 26, 2014

Categories : Japanese | Desserts and Cakes

I finally got a chance to try out this stall. It has been on my radar for a while but I didn’t get to try it in the past as there are always too many people queuing or I was too full from lunch/dinner. I ordered the banana chocolate cream crunch which costs $5. For the filling, I chose the red bean filling. The queue was short and I got my taiyaki within 5 minutes. The taiyaki is warm and crisp on the outside. The cream is rather light tasting so it is not too heavy on the palette. The red bean is rather sweet though, so it can be quite sweet overall. However, what I love about the taiyaki is that the taiyaki itself is chewy which is interesting as most waffle like snacks are usually spongy. There are many other toppings available besides this. It is definitely worth a try especially for people who love taiyaki.

Kimchi soup  Smile Nov 26, 2014

Back in September when there are still the Chef’s Korean inspired soup specials, I went and tried out the kimchi soup. The Kimchi soup comes with a condiment of an egg. Actually, I expected that the egg would be those soft boiled like in toast joints. However, the egg is still very raw, which is something I don’t like since the soup is not hot enough to cook it further.
That said, besides this, I found the soup to be really nice, though it got a little too saltish towards the end, because there is no plain tasting food (like rice or noodles to pair with it). In fact, I think it can rival those kimchi soups from Korean restaurants as the soup by Soup Spoon is full of ingredients and it is very yummy. If only it is on the permanent menu, I could have this every week and not get sick of it.

thai papaya salad Smile Nov 26, 2014

Categories : Thai

I had a suddenly craving for thai food and I decided to stop by Ah Loy Thai for lunch with my colleague. As I had quite a filling breakfast, I decided to order just their thai papaya salad as my lunch. The waiting time was quite long on a weekday lunch, from waiting for table up to the point where our dishes arrived, it was around 30minutes.
The thai papaya salad is quite fiery hot, even though I told them that I want my salad to be less spicy. Nonetheless, it is very flavourful – the fish sauce is just adequate and the dish did not taste too salty. The addition of the peanuts also added more flavor and dimension to the dish. There are also French long beans added to the salad which are raw, so do take note if you dislike the idea of having long beans eaten raw. The salad costs $7.90 which is slightly pricy but the good thing is that prices are nett.

beancurd with tangyuan Smile Nov 26, 2014
Share on TwitterShare on Facebook
Categories : Desserts and Cakes

It is very rainy and cold these few days, so I decided to get a beancurd with tangyuan as dessert on my way home after work. There is a choice of the flavours of tangyuan, and I chose two peanut and one red bean.
The beancurd still retains the heat even after I ate it one hour later which is good. The beancurd is the soft and wobbly type and it is silky smooth. As the tangyuan is sweet, I had requested for less sugar syrup for my beancurd which turns out to be the right choice when I pair it together to eat. The tangyuan are those generic supermarket tangyuans so there is nothing special about it unlike those handmade ones in some dessert stalls. Overall, it is a good choice for a cold day.
