The turnips were still crunchy as ever. There are still dried prawns in each turnip Shui Jing Pau. The texture of the skin though look rubbery was slightly chewy. The yam paste still has that pure sweetness.

The chill sauce standard remained unchanged. Goes very well with the salty flavour of the turnips.

I do not like to queue so what I normally do is to call and reserve the quantity before hand. She can be reached at Tel: 62745561.

The stall is closed every Monday.

Our family favourite crystal dumplings are the original turnips and yam paste fillings.

Priced currently at 60 cents for the original and 70 cents for the yam paste.

These crystal dumplings (Shui Jing Pao) has a thin chewy texture skin and the turnips fillings are crunchy with added dried shrimps. The yam paste sweet and pasty. The other type of crystal dumpling are made from black sesame paste.

The solid chill sauce that goes with these dumplings is still as good as before.

With a Taiwan origin, crystal dumplings are not a regular item on most dim sum restaurants' menus. Contrary to what the name suggests, it is not made of crystal (duh!) but rather has a translucent delicate skin wrapping the burst of sweetness. After 3 failed visits to this particular stall at Alexandra Village Food Centre, I was determined this time round and went down just before the lunch rush hour peak. Yam paste crystal dumpling

(+) Very refined, smooth and well graded yam paste.
(+) Unique soft skin texture, slightly chewy. Requires a slight tug with your teeth unlike those xiao long bao.
(+) Fair tinge of sweetness which enhances the pureness of the yam paste. Perfect for light bite post-main course.

(-) The skin is not as elastic as expected and some might find it rather 'rubbery'.
(-) Does not look very appetizing as we bought an assortment of yam paste, red bean and turnip fillings and the soft dumplings were just piled on each other rather distastefully.

Verdict: 6.5/10

Red bean crystal dumpling

(+) Subtly sweet which was just enough to titillate your tastebuds and not overwhelm.
(+) Texture wise is same as above.

(-) Good food should arouse all senses, and I was largely appalled by the 'stale oil' smell. Not sure what contributed to that, perhaps the preparation methods? It was only for the red bean crystal dumpling though.

Verdict: 5.5/10

Sadly, before we managed to photograph the other turnip filled crystal dumpling, it was yummy gummy no more. I blame it on fast fingers and growling stomachs, another day then! However of the 3 crystal dumplings offered and tested, we actually liked the turnip dumpling most. The turnip was sufficiently moist to bring out the succulence and savoriness of the crystal dumpling. It was a different offering altogether from the above 2 sweet dumplings. The light crunch from the turnips complements the soft skin perfectly, which makes it an edge over the typical vegetable-filled dumplings. Would definitely return for it. Despite my love for red bean delicacies, might take me a while to overcome that pungent overwhelming smell before I attempt a second shot.

Turnip crystal dumpling - Verdict: 8.0/10

I have been eating this for the longest time. I started eating it when the stall was located at the old tiong bahru market a really long time ago. I love both the salty and the sweet flavour. The filling of the salty flavour is the usual turnips and the dried shrimps. It is best eaten with their specially made chilli. As for the sweet flavour, i get to choose in between the yam and the red bean. The yam is one of their best selling and its tends to sold out fast. MUST TRY.

I never like shui jing pau, thats because of their super oily skin and thick chewy skin. The first thing that interest me is definitely the flavours offered for shui jing pau. You will find not only turnips but also red bean and yam fillings. Interesting to taste something that is sweet rather than salty in shui jing pau. A different experience I can say. The next thing is their glossy translucent appearance. Their skin has the just right amount of oil that keeps each shui jing pau apart. I like

I liked their thickness of the skin which combines very well with the amount of fillngs. With the right amount of turnips, dried shirmps and pepper, the fillings taste simply marvellous.

This has been my mother's favorite too. We used to stay at one of the private apartments at Tiong Bahru and she was a regular since then. She still visited this stall even after we moved away. Whenever she was there, she ended up buying extra for our breakfast on the next day. I typically grew up eating this. It still bought back a lot of memories when i had it again today. It reminded me so much of my mother and it bought tears to my eyes. This has been a part of my sweet-bitter memories.

I was there at about 3.30 pm. The one with the yam filling was already sold out, i left with the choice of turnips and the one with red bean paste. The time came to a stand still, it still tasted as good as those good old days at the old Tiong Bahru Food Centre. Not a bit of it has changed. The only thing that is different has to be the price, it is now selling at 0.80 per piece for all the 3 flavors. And if you are taking away and asking for an extra packet of chilli then you are expected to pay an additional of 0.50 cents.

I am going to come back again and again for more.

Strongly recommended.

I am really surprised that this stall had not been reviewed yet. Afterall, this stall is one of the very few stalls left in singapore which are still selling the shui jing paus (crystal dumplings). Basically, it is so called because its skin is very thin and translucent, almost like a see-through. They sell three different types, the one with yam paste(80cents), red bean paste(80cents) or original(60 cents). I got the normal ones to eat and it is really very delicious. You really have to try it
