Miso Cod Fish - $32 (FAVORITE)

(Baked cod fish with miso, served with parsnip puree, sauteed baby spinach and tempura courgette flower)

I was really trying to limit the number of "favorite" dishes I had, but I couldn't bring myself to do it. One of the main highlights of the tasting session was definitely the Miso cod fish, which literally melted in our mouths. Thumbs up to the crispy pork belly and Marc's kiwi burger too! I don't usually gush about cafes like that, nor did they pay me to write this post, but the food served were really impeccable.

I'm pretty sure I'll return for them again!

The ambience of Blackbird Café was simple yet passes off as modern, which makes this a great place for quiet catching up with friends. The usual breakfast stuff like eggs benedict and pancakes are available but it is not a all-day brunch place. We decided to have the nibbles and ordered the crunchy chips priced at around $8. They were surprisingly addictive and good and I kept eating them because they were crunchy and not the least soggy. They also went well with dips provided.

It's definitely an ideal getaway from the hustle and bustle of Plaza Singapura, a cafe good for a lazy weekend brunch, a typical office hour lunch or if you're like me, always considering afternoon tea.

Coffee is in some way, an acquired and cultivated taste. I'm pretty sure no one is/was born to drink coffee. I will never ever forget how I embarrassed myself in an attempt to order my first cuppa without a single clue to any coffee jargon. It took me years of reading and drinking to developed this specialized knowledge and get my orders going just like any coffee connoisseur does.

I really appreciate the fact that they bothered (most cafes don't) to include a simple yet detailed description of each drink. It really helps especially if you're new to coffee and you aren't the vocal type willing to ask what's the difference between a cappuccino from a latte. Such simple gesture is what cultivates our appreciation for coffee. Don't you agree?

I found joy in taking small sips of my long black though I love my Vienna with a dash of cocoa powder above the dollop of whipped cream. Be prepared for the extra caffeine dose, for their coffee beans are prepare the New Zealander way, imparting a more intensive taste than your typical roasting methods.

Pairing my robust Vienna was a rich and dense New York Cheesecake. That's how I love to start and end my afternoons; always with a cuppa paired with a slice of dessert...

Blackbird is such a catchy name!

We had difficulty deciding what to order, they had french toast, eggs ben, english breakfast, omelets etc. Settling on one sweet and one savoury dish, we chose the English Breakfast ($18) and the Muesli French Toast ($10) and caramelized bananas (Add on of $3).

This french toast is by far the most delicious french toast I've paid for and eaten out of home. The muesli gives it a surprising texture which impressed and awed me within a single bite. It's slightly sweet, and when eaten with the maple syrup drizzled over; complemented by the warm and softened banana? Perfect. This dish is a 5/5 instantly! The muesli enhances the toast, giving it a slightly crispy texture with the coarse cereal grains. You can choose between several addons, such as strawberries, but we agreed that the banana was an excellent choice anyway.

For $18, the English Breakfast set disappointed us slightly though. It scored on variety -it came with hash, toast, grilled tomato with alfafa sprouts, bacon & scrambled eggs, a bratwurst and a dish of baked beans. The toast was just average -we would have preferred brioche to this. The scrambled eggs were a little too runny for our liking, but that's just individual preference for "done-ness" of the eggs. The bacon had a smokey flavour but other than that the flavour fell flat. The tomato was sweet but otherwise, not very special. I personally love the combo of baked beans and scrambled eggs though -so I enjoy having baked beans as a side. The bratwurst wasn't to my liking, we suspected a veal sausage was used and I'm really not a fan of veal :'( Other than that, it was well-cooked, juicy and had a nice savoury flavour.

They serve water here too so there's no obligation to get your own drinks. Be sure to try out their coffees; they seem to be quite a hit with the other patrons. Service here is nothing to shout about really. Decent but not spectacular, we would have liked it if they were more pro-active and attentive instead of just standing around in the corner. Price-wise, we wouldn't say that every dish is worth it. But the quality of the food is there, and you just have to know what to order

We recommend the Muesli French Toast. It's something that everyone should try if they are in the Dhoby Ghaut area.

I had the Eggs Benny set at $13++
Generally okay for the price and taste.
You can choose between ham, bacon or mushrooms.
I chose the ham.

Regarding the bad service, firstly, when we entered, the female staff already look unfriendly.
Next, there was a hair in my friend's food.
So we kindly asked her to change a new one. She took the plate and did not apologize.
Well, never mind.
She looked as though she was going to beat us up man!

Anyway the waiting time of food was really long.
Food was just average, marred with the attitude problem of their staff.
All in all, I didn't have a very pleasant meal.

This chocolate berry tart really has a very nice appearance, and the taste is equally delicious as well. The tart pastry is crunchy and compact in texture. The mixed berries topped on the pastry is very sweet and with slight sourness in it. The fresh whip cream filled in the pastry is really light and not too sweet. THe combination of everything may this dessert really enjoyable and will certainly recommend my friends to try it.

Again, what is brunch without Eggs Benny ($12.00)? Though the portion was a little small, this offering was pretty decent, with the right mix of how a proper eggs benedict should taste like. The eggs were how we liked it, runny. The ham was soft and tender and the muffin, well tasted like the ones from McDonalds. But we are not complaining! The mini rocket salad added zest which enlivened the flavourful concoction in the mouth.

The Nana Omelette ($12.00) was not too bad. Like the Eggs Benny, the inside of the omelette was also runny. The shredded ham was a joy to munch on and the cheese made the whole flavour thing interesting.

Though the portions were small, our gut were surprisingly filled after the meal. At $12.00 each, I would say it is a reasonable price for brunch, considering it’s location. The place was crowded and we did not have a seat inside so we had to dine al fresco. So, remember to work your fingers on the phone to reserve a table before you head down to Blackbird the next time!

I had bratwurst sausage risotto at the blackbird cafe that day. It was served in a huge plate, artistically designed with herbs sprinkled at the sides, which made it really appetising! However, the risotto was a little too salty, most probably due to the sausage which were chopped up into small pieces and mixed into the porridge-like dish. There was a piece of bread served with cream cheese spread, which helped relieve some of the saltiness.
