40 Hands Red Bean Paste Bun Tau Sar Pau ($2)

For anybody who likes Tau Sar Pau (chinese red bean paste bun) even a little, this is a MUST.
The version at 40 Hands is about 1.5 times bigger than the usual size we see in other places, so it justifies slightly the more expensive price ($2). What really makes it amazing is the smoothness of the filling that isn't too sweet. At the same time, the
bun itself is fluffy soft to a right. I dare say this is one of the best red
bean paste buns in Singapore. A must for me whenever I visit 40 Hands.

Anyone who has watched the movie Chef(like me) will
want to have a taste of the decadent Cuban sandwich that was featured prominently. 40 Hands' version comes with pork slices, ham, pickles and melted cheese sandwiched in
between two toasted panini slices slathered with mustard and mayonnaise. There
is a side salad served along. The portion was quite large for one.
I had to takeaway the other half of the sandwich. Overall, the combination was
pretty good and the bread toasted crisp, just the way I liked it. For a fan, this
definitely satisfied the craving to try.

Hard to go wrong on this one. The eggs were up to
expectations with the yolk flowing out nicely and runny when cut. However, we felt that
the taste was a little flat - just poached eggs paired with
toast. Perhaps the eggs/greens could be seasoned more.

Coffee

You can almost always count on 40 Hands to deliver a good cup of coffee, as this is what they pride themselves on. The latte art was very well done for my cup of Flat White. However, note that the coffee here is more for those who prefer it acidic.

The egg is done just nice for one with its runny yolk, but a bit raw for the other egg. One can see the yolk flowing out like lava.

The spicy roasted potatoes is more like cubes of roasted potatoes in tomato paste, with no hint of spiciness.

Overall it is a very filling and yummy meal. Food is served quite fast. The place is quite relaxing with its dim lights around.

I began with a good solid cup of Soy Mocha. This silky-smooth cup of coffee is neither too thick or thin, but the rich fragrance of coffee is prominent, infused with the "nutty" flavor of soy milk. The pretty coffee art was a bonus.

Next, the Bitter Chocolate Tart - the crust is somewhat crunchy and tastes of the richness of dark chocolate flavor. The sticky ganache filling is another slice of heaven - clinging to the mouth and igniting the senses into a chocolatey awareness. The overall texture of crunchiness and sticky softness was awesome.
And there's the slice of Lemon Cheesecake - a very refreshing delight. Fluffy stickiness of cheese cake, hints of saltishness paired with the citrusy frolick of lemon - and I loved the fine layer of biscuit base that supported the cake. This is an absolute slice of perfection to go with piping hot coffee.

Big Boy Breakfast $18
This is not your usual breakfast with sausages and scrambled eggs. The Big Boy Breakfast is served with spicy chipolate sausages, grilled tomatoes, grilled mushrooms, bacon, bolognese, flat bread with sour cream and scrambled eggs.

The scrambled eggs were really soft, moist and slightly runny. The sausages had a piquant flavour which would be ideal for sharing. There were 2 flat bread but too little sour cream to go with. Nonetheless, this big boy made our tummies satisfied.

Salmon Hash $16
Salmon poached in creamy potato and mustard sauce, pan-fried onion, toast and fries. The amount of salmon did not really justify for the price. The creamy sauce complemented well with the toast while the skinny fries were slightly salty.

Overall, it was a decent brunch with exceptional coffee and average service.

I have ordered the Big Bang Gourmet Hot Dog and it consists of bacon, scrambled eggs, bolognese and chilli flakes, beef and pork sausage. it is like a brunch dish that is packed into a hot dog bun. And to me, this hot dog bun is actually quite mediocre. Nothing really fantastic about it. But worth trying if you are a hot dog lover like me.

Only the gourmet hotdog selections and certain sandwiches were available as we came on a Saturday dinner.

The Big Bang is one of the gourmet hotdog. It is made with scrambled eggs, bolognese, sour cream and bacon accompanying the guinness beef and pork sausage. This accompanies well with beer (I was having coffee so I had skipped that)

The 2 sandwiches were surprising filling! If you like food with a tangy taste, do try the this sandwich. I'm a huge fan of Thai food, esp tom yum so this hit the spot! Although the chicken breast can be a little dry, the sauce and the other ingredients made up for it! A perfect choice for someone who watches their diet! You could prolly order 2 sandwiches if you're with a friend and share them, best of both worlds!

The coffee was disappointing however. I didn't find it good at all! Probably because it was a weekend, and the baristas are all busy and stuff.

Of course, even though it's overpriced, I still ordered the tau sar pau, just cause I had to. Hahaha! It was pretty nice, the pau was thick and fluffy, I loved the texture and the filling was not too sweet! Definitely worth a try!

Right opposite Forty Hands is a nice little oldschool local book store called Books Actually, perfect place to go to right after your meal, and you can head down along the street to get a PV cupcake for desserts!

For the food offerings, there is a few different types of food sold - Toasties (bread with fillings) and there is also the all day breakfast menu. I ordered the Eggs Benedict $14 from the all day breakfast menu. The eggs benedict are quite alright, not as runny as I would have liked, but still ok. The runnier the eggs, the more the bread will soak up the yolk which made it more tasty, but the eggs are half runny. It is average as I had better egg benedict before, but if you want something to go with your coffee, this can be a good choice.

Of course what better snack than truffle fries?
I say truffled fries because the one I had was overwhelmingly truffled. Mmm yum.

But that was a problem because the truffle oil was really not well mixed. I had a fry that tasted entirely normal. Plain fries really.

Tucked away in a hidden quiet corner at Tiong Bahru, which was one of the first public housing estates in Singapore, 40 Hands certainly stood out among the old buildings being a modern and trendy looking cafe, which would appeal to students and young professionals alike.

The name was inspired from the fact that an average of 40 hands are required in the production of coffee, from the initial process of planting coffee seeds to the end product of a delicious and aromatic fresh brew. What many failed to recognize when enjoying their shot of Espresso or Latte was that the history of coffee was one filled with stories of poverty and exploitation. At 40 Hands, they aimed to promote a sustainable coffee economy whereby certified 'Fair Trade' coffee beans were used, i.e. purchasing directly from growers allowing them to earn a higher profit margin. With the abundance of budding cafes, I must say that I was impressed with what 40 Hands endeavour to achieve and their business ethics.

The first impression at the outset was that it was rather cramped, well explicitly, expect to brush some shoulders trying to make your way through. What I particularly favoured though was the clever use of the setting and location of the cafe at a quiet hideout at Tiong Bahru (an old public housing estate) with modern touches to its interior design, display exhibits and arguably the food served. Not forgetting of course provocative billboard posters as such.

Long Black (S$4/-)

(+) High roast, slight bittersweet tang with less acidity.
(+) Strong delicious aroma, certainly titillating to one's sense of smell.

(-) Regrettably, the initial taste was offset by the sour aftertaste.
(-) The tart flavour, such as unripe fruit persisted and lingered and had to be washed down with plain water, which was a real letdown.
(-) With the fan blowing at full blast, it was not too long before my coffee dropped to almost room temperature and the sour taste was the dominant flavour.

Latte (S$5/-)

(+) Best among the 3 beverages, richly fragrant and well balanced in terms of sweetness. I am however a Long Black/Americano and Espresso shots person and detest any sugar or milk being added to my drink, so..

Iced Mocha in the background of the above picture (S$8/-)
(-) Overly sweet and certainly overpriced for the serving size and quality.
(-) The coffee taste was barely discernible, with chocolate taste overwhelmingly strong.
(-) Tasted pretty much like a sweetened chocolate beverage.

Tau Sar Pau (S$2.50/pc)

(+) The bun was very light (in terms of density), fluffy and smooth in texture.
(+) The skin of the bun was good in the sense it did not stick to our teeth.
(+) Red bean paste inside was rich in ingredients and only mildly sweet, just to our liking.
(+) Despite the smoothness of the paste, it was not too 'liquefied' nor fluid.
(+) Unique shape of the bun contrary to the conventional round shape.

(-) Way Overpriced. Could easily have bought 2-3 tau sar paus at S$2.50.
(-) Did not seem freshly made as it was served straight from the pau electric steamer.

Big Boy Breakfast with scrambled eggs (S$18/-)

(+) The ingredients used in this all day breakfast were fresh and of a good quality.
(+) Scrambled eggs were done perfectly with a soft curd texture, just the way it should be.
(+) Interesting presentation of western breakfast served on an 'old school' metal plate.

(-) The portion size was evidently sparing to say the least for the price.

The portion size was evidently sparing for the price though. 2 sausages, some sauteed mushrooms, minced meat (think spaghetti bolognese), 1pan fried tomato sliced in 2, some iceberg letture, 2 slices of naan bread and some scrambled eggs for S$18 certainly seemed too expensive to us since we were used to having English breakfast here in UK at pubs and they were about half the price at 40 Hands with similar quality and larger portions.

The ambiance at 40 Hands was good in general (with seating at the ground floor) not the lower ground level where our table was. Apparently GST and service charge was not levied onto the bill, so prices listed above were nett. Even so, we felt that it was overpriced at current standing, considering the quality and quantity of food. Do not be mistaken though, the quality was certainly above average for the food, though I would beg to differ when it came to the coffee beverages. Being a caffeine addict, I expect nothing but the best especially when it is the first cup of the day.

Selling themselves as a socially responsible cafe, I was impressed more by their business ethos rather than, regrettably, their brew. Despite not being charged for customer service, one could certainly expect better attention at 40 Hands. Drawing comparison with a recent dining experience at QQ Noodle House, which similarly did not charge for service had a much better approach and attitude towards their diners. It is not just about the price, it is about professionalism in the service industry. Many cafes and restaurants tend to attribute this aspect of the dining experience to the shortage of manpower and busy orders, but personally I felt that is but an 'excusatory' element conveniently relied upon. It should be regarded as an integral part of one's dining experience and paying no heed to your customers is certainly a taboo in my books.

I had ever had a good experience at 40hands. I did not know where were all the MAIN baristas? The baristas on the floor that day were all pinoys. We ordered Latte, V60 pour over Colombia beans and Banana cake. We slurped the first slurp of the V60, we had given up. Tasted horribly. Im sorry, not that we don't know coffee alright. Basically we knew what we were tasting. Latte wasn't as smooth as before. Im so sorry, 40 hands. You deserve better compliment, but not this time round.

We were here on a saturday morning and the cafe was rather crowded. I ordered a jamaican pork sandwich (about $10) and it came wrapped up in two slices. look how cute it is!

It was difficult for us first timers to get to the cafe. We took a cab and were circling around for quite awhile until the uncle dropped us off and said it was the place (but it wasn't). Anyway, on the way back, we walked to Tiong Bahru Mrt (for about 10 minutes) and found that it was actually quite nearby.
