This is the 2nd time we’re visiting Hoshi and this time round, we decided to try their ala carte menu instead. We ordered the Sashimi Bento Set with tempura and yakiniku ($27++). The sashimi was good and the yakiniku was flavourful and tender. However, we found the tempura to be a little soggy (perhaps a tad too much oil) and lacked the crisp we were expecting.Overall, the quality of food was pretty similar to the buffet. Overall, the quality of food was pretty similar to the buffet. For the price, I would recommend to have the buffet (if you have the appetite and time) instead as it would definitely be more worthwhile.

I decided to have Japanese food so my boyfriend drove me and his mom to have a good meal at Hoshi. a Japanese restaurant which we both frequent at. Pretty nice place to be at.

However, to my surprise, we went during the lunch hours but the place was pretty empty. Do note that the place does not serve Sashimi during lunch. Pretty surprising uh? My boyfriend is really in love with Salmon Sashimi however, he still decided to stay on because he knew I wanted Japanese food badly for lunch. Nice guy.

I order Peach Italian Soda, not bad. Pretty good but it's a little too sweet and gassy. My boy had Blue Ocean Italian Soda, not a bad choice. I tried once few times back, it taste a little like blueberry.

Our appetizer; soft shelled crab. It's still piping hot when it's serve. The portion is still okay for 4 pax but I believe for the price we pay, we can get much more.

Main dishes for my man was Curry don with pork & chicken katsu. A good combination and he was complaining that he is very full. The chicken ain't as tender as the pork. I got myself a Yaki beef set with rice, it comes with miso soup, fruits and also, rice. It's taste really good, the texture and the mixture of the BBQ sauce goes really well.

Overall, this is one of our favourite Japanese restaurant at Jurong because it's one of the nearest.

Actually came to Hoshi to try out thei teppanyaki but sashimi is a must-order for me at any Jap restaurant!! Not really interested in eating other styles of Japanese food and like the sashimi/sushi more but my whole family likes Teppanyaki. Had to book this in advance or else there won't be a slot for you! The chef was really nice and even though we could tell he was from China and not a Japanese cook, his skill was good and you could see it from the way he cooked. You can customize your order and ask for more chilli or less salt or more rice too! Seafood fried rice is nice and must-order if you need carbos.

Hoshi's sashimi is awesome and really fresh and sweet, I eat their sashimi without the soy sauce or wasabi because the taste is really good. That's how fresh and good their sashimi is. The salmon is the best sashimi there and be sure to order it when you go there!

Service on the other hand isn't great and we get neglected by their waitresses and waiters a lot, and we see them standing idly at the counter and either staring into space or talking to each other. It didn't use to be like that in the past and hope they can improve on it. Pricing wise, quite expensive but acceptable for a Jap restaurant, however not acceptable on account of it's lousy service.

Would still go there once in a while because I love their sashimi.

My favorite dish in this restaurant is their Tempura as it is deep-fried to perfection that it is not too oily and it is crispy on the outside and juicy on the inside. There were also various types of side accompanying it, for example, their udon noodles is also a great choice to eat it with their tempera as their udon noodles is very springy and chewy. The broth of the noodles is also very tasty and light.

Mix Sashimi
The sashimi was very fresh considering the price we’re paying for. Definitely value-for-money, and most importantly, it’s low in calories and high in nutritional value
A must order or you’ll regret!

Teppanyaki
The sirloin was cut into bite size pieces and was juicy and chewy. It would have been better if they had added a little more seasoning to enhance the flavour of this dish. The yaki niku was a joy to eat, rich in flavor and tender in texture. I found the salmon overcooked and was rather dry, pretty standard for buffet I suppose. The prawns and squid was nicely grilled and was flavourful. The prawns were huge and succulent, would have been better if they were fresher, but for the price, I feel that it’s still very worth it

Grilled Dishes
The grilled salmon, similar to its teppanyaki counterpart, was overcooked and rather dry. The grilled mackerel was pretty average as well. Luckily, the shishmo turned out pretty tasty and fragrant. The marinated pork was also one of the nicer dishes there. It was tender and had the right mix of fats and meat.

Side dishes
Some of the more interesting side dishes and sushi that deserve some mention included the shumai (i.e. jap version of siew mai) which was soft and rich in flavour; California maki which was “warped” very “Q” fish roe and the yakitori which was tender and moist.

Desserts
I always look forward to trying the desserts and I’m happy Hoshi didn’t disappoint me
. The assorted mochi were unique, soft, chewy and most importantly, not too sweet and overpowering. The lime ice cream was a zesty and refreshing inclusion to mark the end of our scrumptious buffet lunch!

Overall, I found Hoshi to be quite value for money and definitely worth a try!

The salad was made up of cabbage, carrod, tomato, kerp, cucumber and celery (unusual). Refreshing.

We requested the chef to split the three sets into four portions. The salmon was cooked in a foil with some sauce. The codfish was fried with butter. It's a little salty.

My kids didn't like prawn, sotong and scallop, so the portion was divided between my hubby and I. These were all too salty and I couldn't take it anymore, so I requested the chef to cook the rest with less salt.

The chef did harken to my request and reduced the amount of salt. At this moment, we were all very full. The portion given was quite generous.

The chicken was the last of the teppan dishes. Too much of the teriyaki sauce.

The dessert was ice-cream, three different flavours, vanilla, chocolate and lime. Since we have three sets, we asked for one of each. I took the lime. I thought it would be a sorbert but no, it was lime ice-cream. Pretty refreshing after all the fried and salty dishes. A good way to conclude the meal.
