La Petite Cuisine serves a decent French Cuisine, authentic and unpretentious. They are humbly situated in one of the old school malls in Bukit Timah Area and are known for its affordability and quality.

By chance, we were there on one of the weekday nights and decided to give it a try since we have pass by the place so many times and the crowd in the restaurant was rather convincing.

Furnishing was not really modern but still presentable in its own style. They have black board mounted on to the "bricks-lookalike" tiles indicating the specials serving of the day.

Without looking much into their ala carte menu, we decided on the Weekday Set dinner at $24 which we thought was pocket friendly as there is no GST and service charge. Plain water are self-service and are reachable from the drinks counter. The dinner set is rather straight forward with 2 choices of appetizer, mains and desserts each.

Getting the best of both worlds we order 2 sets and tried everything for the set dinner during that day.

My first try of Orange Carrot Soup was pleasing, it tasted sweet more than of a citrus taste that I would have expected. They were served tongue burning hot and goes indeed well dipping the mini baguettes.

The stomach comforting Ravioli of spinach among the light creamy sauce was a good reminisce of my France trip. The straight forward dish without much fanciful creations in the dish is somehow what I'm looking for. Decent and down to earth.

One of the set was served with rice, spinach and Salmon Filet in cream sauce. Cream sauce is light and taste is identical to what was being used in the Ravioli dish. Salmon was cooked perfectly with crispy skin and pinkish on the inside.

Salmon Filet Pan-Fried Served with Baby Spinach & Creme Sauce
Comparing this main course to the salmon, I would have prefer this dish more. The steak was chewy and tender. The mushroom sauce reveals some hints of wine in it gave a perfect match to the Sirlion Steak. The stomach fillers in the dish will be the potato grains.

The wobbly panna cotta as our desserts was a sweet ending to the meal. I don't have a sweet tooth, thus the caramelized top layer isn't really for me.

Overall, La Petite Cuisine is a commendable place and for sure I will recommend to my friends who wants to have some authentic french cuisine without breaking the pocket.

Among the first restaurants in Singapore to start serving cuisine from France, La Petite Cuisine has established itself firmly as a stalwart bastion of homely, French comfort food. First operating as La Cuisine, an up-market French restaurant in 2005, La Petite Cuisine was opened as a casual French bistro, to complement the main restaurant. And while La Cuisine has since ceased operations, La Petite Cuisine has been going strong all these years, consistently serving up affordable, unpretentious, and tasty, French and Italian dishes.

Ambience at La Petite Cuisine is similar to a Paris / Parisian street side bistro, with colourful furniture, checkered tablecloths, and a brightly lit interior. Their new premises has a much bigger floor space, and the walls are adorned with French paintings and news clippings. A brick wall on which is mounted a old-school blackboard displays the specials of the day. Definitely a casual, welcoming place!

Service at La Petite Cuisine is good. Staff offer greetings upon entry, and also bid you goodbye... but only if they're not busy. Ordering an payment is self-service though. But I like that the staff are able to offer recommendations, and are knowledgable on the menu. Orders are also served quickly to your table, waiting time is short, usually less than 10 minutes.

Food at La Petite Cuisine revolves around the cuisine of France and Italy. Generally, I find dishes to be very tasty, presented in a rustic style, and prepared with nearly authentic, traditional recipes, although some liberties are taken with ingredients. Portions are large for one person, and prices are very affordable, budget between SGD $20 to $30 or so per person for a meal.

Loved the smooth and rich Tomato Soup (SGD $4), with its bright, refreshing flavour. While there aren't any chunks of tomato within, it's still very satisfiying and drinkable. Among their more popular flavours!

The Choucroute Alsacienne / Choucroute Garnie (SGD $21) here retains the spirit of the traditional, while changing the ingredients to those more readily available in Singapore. Not as authentic, but still very good, and the portion is large enough for sharing. The pork cutlet to has a nice smoky, grilled flavour, and was slightly moist, but very thick, thus, dry in the middle. The ham was well grilled, with a salty, savoury taste. The pork belly was excellent, and the fat comes off easily. The 2 types of sausages used are chicken frankfurter sausage and pork bratwurst sausage, both were well grilled and juicy!

The hot sauerkraut was done in French style, less tart but more moist than the German version. The boiled potatoes were lovely and soft, although I wish there was more of it. Highly recommended!

The Confit De Canard With Gratin Potato (SGD $17.50) is pure French food. This classic duck confit has moist, fork tender, fall off the bone meat on the duck leg, with a crisp skin livened with herbs. The savoury brown gravy isn't too salty, and the classic French potato gratin is soft and creamy. Truely among the best duck confit around, and so satisfiying, highly recommended!

We ordered the Dory in basquaise sauce, Confit de canard and escargots! The food was all excellent and delicious! The escargot that we ordered was juicy and somehow tasted a bit like mushrooms (or maybe it was my imagination). They went very well with the bread and it was relatively cheap and satisfying. The dory was well cooked - Fresh without a strong fishy smell. It had a soft and smooth texture and the sauce really complimented the fish well! The duck confit was the cherry on the cake - A crispy layer of skin with warm and tasty meat in the inside. The suace was heavenly as well and had us craving for more! The smell of the duck confit was fragrant as well and rich with flavour. All in all, it was a very good meal that was worth every cent! The restaurant as I mentioned earlier is pretty small, so it might get a little cramped at times.

For last French Cuisine experience, I feel the confit tasted quite good, so I ordered this time. Tasted quite different from what I had previously but this has its own great taste. I like it and the gratin potatoes tasted great too. While waiting for me, my friend ordered a 4 kind of French Cheese with Crackers($13), it comes with 4 types of cheese(Roblecuon,Polybek, Camoyek, Goat Milk) biscuits and bun. I tried hard to get the staff to tell me what is the cheese and even wrote on the paper but I failed to recognize the handwriting and they said pronunciation is hard for French. I feel not good to disturb them long so I just walked away with what I have. I tried googled the French Cheese but doesn't really match from what I got. May be you can figure out what is the cheese from the picture below. This came in complimentary, the bun tasted quite nice while served warm.http://rainfooddiary.blogspot.sg/2013/07/la-petite.html

Doesn’t La Petite change your mind about French Cuisine being simple and affordable like Poulet or Saveur too?

My dinner partner and I started off our unpretentious meal with their Escargots With Croissant ($14.00) or as I like to call escargots in croissant. Neither the escargots nor the croissant were impressionable but the savoury gravy drizzled all over it sure was superbly heavenly! Considering that I ordered this as an appetizer, the portion would do just fine as an entree too.

Foie gras has always been my favourite starter. You can’t really go wrong with the rich flavours emitted soon after it melts within your mouth. (That is provided you don’t burnt it.) Coupled with richer dark sauce with sweet citrus orange confit and violia! Heaven is within reach!

Even more so when heaven comes in pairs and that’s what La Petite’s Pan Fried Foie Gras With Orange Confit ($18.50) is all about…

If there’s any dish that reflects La Petite Cuisine unpretentious and affordable French cuisine, it would surely have to be the Confit De Canard ($17.00) or as I like to call it; duck confit. It’s a must-have for me every time I visit the French bistro. I simply adore the crispy yet tender duck leg resting on a shallow of rich reduction sauce.

I don’t usually have this considering it is awfully sinful and artery-clotting since it’s a piece of duck leg cooked in its fat. It was such a pity that the French chef wasn’t in the kitchen preparing this dish on the night of my visit or else it will be even more enjoyable…

Because I always stick to my comfort food whenever I visit them, I hardly try anything else on their menu. I have to be honest that I was hesitant to order their Sirloin Steak ($16.50) since I’m always disappointed by the quality that differs so much from steak speciality place.

But it turns out my fears were unfounded! Served medium-rare as I always request for all my beef cuts, La Petite sure did not disappoint us with their tender slabs of steak. Their potato gratin served as their side dish was a nice compliment to the dish.

La Petite Cuisine is a nice place to have something French without feeling a pinch in your pockets. I mean where else would you duck confit under $20 and still taste as good as those bistros in Paris or Marseille? While they might have another outlet at Upper Thomson, I will always make my way down to their main shop at Serene Center, Bukit Timah should I need to satisfy my cravings for French food.

Just pray hard that you will find a table since the place is small and it does get really crowded at night.

As for desserts…

They do have desserts like caramel pudding and tarte tartin on their menu or you can always make your way next door and have ice creams instead…

This dish is almost taste like a chinese dish from the zi char stall. The kiam chye is very crunchy and not too salty. Cook with very fragrant and soft luncheon meat, which the combination is really yummy! Can have this dish on its on or with a plate of fragrant plain rice is equally delicious as well. My whole family really like to eat this dish, and I believe you will equally like it as well.

By the time I was there for dinner, it was about 9pm. I was looking forward to try their Duck Confit but most of the food on the menu already sold out. I have to settle for what was still available.

Upon placing the order and making payment, the waiter/waitress will serve the bread and butter.

The Chicken Chop with Spaghetti was nice but a little more sauce would be preferred. The spaghetti was Al Dente. The chicken was tender and moist.

The Salmon was cooked perfectly. Pink inside with a delicious crispy skin. The spinach side and the cream sauce gave the dish a good balance of flavours.

Wow, I'm surprised that I'm the first here to write a review of this place!

La Petite Cuisine is an authentic, unpretentious and humble French cuisine restaurant that is tucked away at a corner of Serene Centre. It is not overly priced, very affordable for its quality and not to worry; it really wouldn't burst your wallet! Oh, there is no service charge and GST as well. This never fails to be packed especially during dinner time over the weekends. This place also does not take reservations; water is self-service and they don’t do fancy ambience or cutleries. Nevertheless, customers are still constantly flocking over. You can choose to sit in the air-condition area outside the restaurant (or a table or two, though), just outside the restaurant (outdoors) or by the garden with candle lights.

My boyfriend and I read the reviews and recommendations first online to help us decide on what to order. Finally, I came to a decision to order the popular Duck Confit with Potato Gratin for my main course. Oh yes, a warm and soft bread roll with butter will be served to you first.

The Duck Confit with Potato Gratin only cost $16.50. This would come across as expensive to me only if the dish is horribly micro waved. But no, the duck meat was so tender and juicy that it fell off the bone so easily.. the duck skin was crispy enough to my liking too. The potato gratin tasted like potato salad but more buttery.. I'm not a fan of butter-packed stuff but I guess it was alright as the potato chunks were neither too hard nor mushy.

The dish really impressed me and I'll definitely come back for more next time.

PS: I am generally a small eater and the dish was just-nice for me. Bigger eaters might want to order more dishes, maybe try the Appetizers!
