The dining area is quite large and can comfortably seat big groups, we came in a group of 4 adults and 2 toddlers and the customer service was excellent. The friendly staff brought the baby chairs to the table and were very patient with the children.

We ordered both an adult portion and a child's portion which was more than enough for 2 20 month old kids to share. The adult's portion was also huge enough for at least 2 hungry people to share. You could taste the sweetness of the prawns in the soup, but it just wasn't up to what I was expecting. Even though my brother mentioned that most of the food here is very tasty and I don't doubt the use of MSG, this was pretty bland.

Madam's tri-coloured rice with assam prawns, beef rendang and deep fried chicken drumstick. My brother wouldn't stop raving about this "heavenly" and super crispy chicken. The chicken was indeeed delicious. The meat was fresh and pretty much came off the bone with ease. The rice is very beautifully colored and tasted fragrant. My only gripe about this dish is that it can be quite oily. I had reached for my teh tarik several times to wash down the oil. Nonetheless, you can't have an oil-free hawker food, so I'll just "tahan" the oil for now.

I wouldn't say Madam Kwan's is terribly expensive nor is it cheap. However, I have read that you can savour the same dishes for half the price in Malaysia, as the dishes are priced the same, but in ringgit!

All in all, a great place to hang out in the comfort of air conditioning, have a chit chat with friends or family and dig into quality hawker food.

The Bro had the Foo Yong Egg (SGD$10.90), served piping hot. It was very tasty, served just off the wok, infused with some vegetables and succulent shrimps. The omelet was even and rather smooth, however, if one were to talk about an authentic Foo Yong Egg, the essential BBQ pork bits (char siew) should not be missing. I believe that this cafe is halal hence pork is excluded from the menu.

I had the Beef Horfun (SGD$14.90) as I was in a horfun mood. Also drenched in gravy - this one rich with eggs beaten in - the beef was rather tender and the horfun noodle was too soft for my liking. I remember chewing through the dish without tasting it because it was bland; so I had no choice but to compensate wtih lack of favor with chilli padi.

Otak $15.90

This is quite a thick piece in 8 cubes, cut unequally. It's nice and that aroma purges out with every bite. The strong taste of otah stays for awhile in your mouth. But you get a little sick because of the big portion plus the thickness of every cut cube.

Claypot Seafood Beancurd $15.90

The only reason why we ordered this is because we want a good balance of nutrients. Inside, you can find tofu, prawns, beans, cauliflowers, mushrooms and so on. Al I can say is well-cooked and the prawns are fresh. Nothing much to comment for a norm dish on the dining table.

Ipoh Kway Teow Soup $11.90

The minute it was served up to me, I regretted. So plain. Nothing appeals to me. The soup was bland. Prawns was a little overcooked as it tastes a little harden. Although I wanted something light, but I need something that can stir up my appetite. This has totally failed on me.

Overall, it wasn't a good dinner yet pricey.

There was also beef rendag. The beef was so tender it kind of melts in your mouth. The rendang sauce was a bit spicy but tasted very good both on its own or with the rice.

And there was fried chicken. Like the beef, the chicken meat was roasted to perfection, very tender and it's not over oily and very smooth. The skin tasted especially good.

Only problem I had was with the price. $18.90 for a plate of nasi bojari, it's a little hard to accept because it cost around the same in KL except it's in ringgit.

The food isn't that bad but the problem is that some Nasi Lemak places can out cook them and charge way less than the prices here. There is no creativity in plating. I plate my buffet plate better than them. The only redeeming factor was the satay sauce but the beef satay was dry and tough. The beef rendang was ok but not worth $11.90

Won't be going back here...

Was so hungry and came across this Madam Kwan's and oh well since I am hungry and Malaysian Cuisine was good we decided to go for it.

The place was big and it look classy to me for the lighting and ambiance ..... but somehow the classical music just dun suit the food that we gonna take and it was really loud!

Goh wanted to have beef so he ordered beef noodles (horfun) ($14.90) for me by looking at the picture I found the hokkien mee ($14.90) looks good so I go ahead ordering that. We also go for Chicken Satay (11.90) which the waiter recommend and also Fried Chicken wings ($11.90) and we decided to have plain water ($1 each refillable).

Waiting time was a breeze the food came out very fast .... and in no time our table were full! I was disappointed in the hokkien mee ..... it was salty and oily I didn't finished it just ate 1/4 of it. Goh said that the beef horfun was so so only there's better outside. Fried Chicken Wings was good very crispy and not too oily thumbs up, as for satay is also normal but ketupat was soft not so bad!

Wanted to order dessert but since the main dishes already disappointment we decided to give a miss to it and I dun think I will go back there again. Total spending after service charge - $65.45 for lousy food I think is really expensive

The restaurant was nearly full but still had a couple of empty seats around when we visited on weekend lunch. The dining area seemed pretty large and well prepared for big crowds, but I guess most of the hype of Madam Kwan’s opening was taken away by Jamie’s Italian, which definitely was the more preferred choice for hungry shoppers there.

Nasi Lemak comes with Achar, Ikan Billis, Chicken Rendang, Prawn Floss, half an egg and cucumbers. The Nasi Lemak had a moderate coconut taste in it, which was neither underwhelming nor overwhelming. It could still be tasted even with the Chicken Rendang eaten with it. The Chicken Rendang also had the right flavour of curry in it, with just enough spices to make it taste right. The level of spiciness may however be a bit too overpowering for some people. The Achar was fresh, crunchy and juicy and was sour enough without making one cringe. The Prawn Floss was somewhat like our usual Pork Floss but slightly blander in taste. The Ikan Billis, cooked with onions was pretty sweet yet spicy at the same time, which was pretty alluring.

Nasi Bojari comes with a fried chicken drumstick, Beef Rendang and another side. The rice tasted rather similar to turmeric rice and was pretty fragrant, while the Beef Rendang was less spicier than the Chicken Rendang but did not carry a heavy taste of game. The Fried Chicken Drumstick was the star of the Nasi Bojari, which was also available to order as a side. The skin was very crispy and the seasoning made it felt very savoury. This was not my dish, so after grabbing a piece of it I was really dying for more.

The Banana Fritters with Vanilla Ice-Cream was a nice dish to end of the meal, which was Goreng Pisang served with ice-cream. The Vanilla Ice-Cream was rather smooth, though it was one of the sweetest I ever had. It went well with the Banana Fritters, which was drizzled in a small amount of caramel to add a bit of sweetness. The Banana Fritters had a tempura-like skin which was very crispy and light, and the banana was pretty soft, fresh and sweet as well.

Feeling quite thirsty after coming straight from work, I decided to order an interesting-sounding yam milkshake while the others come. Ordering in English seemed to be a mistake - the waitress replied me in Chinese stating that she didn't understand. Okay, I thought, strange for a restaurant in Vivocity, the ultimate tourist shopping mall. I repeated my order in Chinese, pointing to the item on the menu. She gave final confirmation by asking if she had circled the correct item on the mini-menu that she was holding.

The rest of my family finally arrived, and we ordered some dishes from the menu to share, and a plate of rice each. My milkshake arrived while we were ordering. I expected it to be purple, but I thought that it was white because of a lack of artificial colouring. I took a sip, frowned, and took a few more - it turned out to be a regular vanilla milkshake. I waited for us to finish ordering the food, before I spoke up.

Anyway the waiter suggested the assam fish head while we were making decisions. My sister and I quietly flipped to the item on the menu, and it was priced at $49 but thankfully nobody on the table was up for fish that night, and the suggestion didn't lead anywhere.

Then I requested a change of drink, but the waiter refused. Why, I asked, the waitress who took my order made a mistake, I wanted yam, not vanilla. It's a restaurant regulation, he politely stated - once a customer tries their food, the kitchen can't take it back. My family and I exchanged amused faces. Then, he said, you shouldn't have drunk it, if you wanted to change it.

"How would she have known it was wrong, if she didn't drink it?" Many variations of this was thrown towards the waiter, but he refused, again and again, without much apology.

After lots more slightly heated demands for explanation, as well as some mutterings of 'bad service' under our breaths, the waiter couldn't be persuaded. We gave up, and I drank that vanilla milkshake.

The food came fast in a flurry, the plates all barely fitting onto the table. The best of it was the fried chicken - lovely tenderness, and a nice, crispy skin. There was also some great but spicy sotong, (squid) kangkong, (water spinach) and chicken curry - the latter had a distinct flavour of coconut milk, which was nice but activated a siren against my diet plan! The beef rendang tasted so-so, but was bad on the presentation front: plonked on a plain diner's plate, about three stingy scoops, with two pathetic cucumber slices sticking out of the side of the plate. Costing somewhere between $10 to $13, it certainly wasn't worth it. The beef satay was big and chunky but lacked charred, complex flavours I could get from my own barbecue party, although the accompanying peanut sauce was great.

The drinks were rather overpriced - $5 for my brother's 'Honey Lemon Tea', which was basically water, lemon slices, ice cubes, and honey.

The bill came up to $144 for the five of us. For local food that we can easily find elsewhere - despite the higher quality of just a few dishes - it was not worth it, and I don't think I'll be going back to Madam Kwan's unless this branch at Vivocity does some serious staff-training and policy-reviewing.

The information presented in this account is true to the best of my knowledge. I wish Madam Kwan's all the best, and hopefully I'll see more customers and better staff on a Sunday night in Vivocity the next time I visit.

Also, I was definitely not happy about having to pay compulsory service charge.

I was surprised at how intense the soya milk was, tasted homemade.

Syrup was served on the side, t’was thoughtful.

Nasi Lemak served with Acar on the side S$13.90+

Another surprise, the food served here tasted as good as the ones we had back in KL on numerous occassions.

The tender chicken chunks smothered in the signature’s thick and aromatic curry sauce – just the type to have white rice with.

Char Keow Tiao (CKT) S$14.90+

This version of CKT is neither typical Malaysian nor Penang style.

It is Madam Kwan’s another signature dish.

The slightly smoky plate of chewy rice noodles tangled with the right amount of egg strands and beans sprouts.

Quite a lot of fresh tender squid and chicken chunks thrown in as well.

The service here was fast whereas the warmly lit interior was comfortable enough admist the boisterous conversations.

When I set my eyes upon the menu again, I wasn't tempted at all. Maybe I have become spoilt with the array of new restaurants sprouting up in Singapore every other day, but the food doesn't amaze me. Anyway, 4 of us came here on a Friday night because our friend had fond memories of its Fried Hokkien Noodles which looked like udon to me. It was fried with dark sauce and was not oily. A good portion with some fresh prawns.

I had the dumpling soup which I would say was tasty but too expensive. The soup was also very oily due to the fried onions they put in. The dumplings were big though, but skin was not the soft and smooth type typical of shrimp dumpling.

The beef noodles was drenched in an eggy gravy but they were quite a small portion of noodles. The only great thing is that the slices of beef were quite generous.

Main gripe is that it is too expensive, they charged $1 for a glass of water
and its definitely not diet-friendly.

Went to eat the newly open Madam Kwan at Vivo City which takes quite a while to look for the place. Order the Nasi Bojari + Lime Juice which it was a pity that the Otah was sold out. Food was not bad but the beef is kinda spicy. Price is kind of steep for a nasi lemak but nevertheless i will think that KL restaurant will be much recommended to taste the original Madam Kwan food.
