The meal started off badly. I'd made reservations mid-week for 3 persons indoors over the long weekend, but when we arrived, we were told that there was no such reservation. Only after I'd made noise (and a small scene) that they provided us a table (out on the terrace with the humidity, no less, so we were left sweating mid-way through the dinner). They may have served us spittle, and that may have contributed to the less-than-glowing review of the restaurant, but I didn't think I was wrong in insisting that they provide a table for us. Someone on their staff definitely screwed up. And I'm certainly not one to lie my way to get a table without reservations.

In general, the food was very ordinary, standard fare of almost every other Italian establishment in town. Service-wise, with the exception of our waiter not understanding the phrase "hold off the parsley", it was alright. Ambience was romantic, with candles and dim lighting for illumination, but the heat and humidity of the outdoors terrace deterred us from lingering, and ordering dessert. We just wanted to eat and run (not dine and dash). With such an illustrious history and judging from the number of dining awards garnered by the restaurant, the dining experience was a little underwhelming.

We had:

1) Beef Carpaccio ($22) - supposedly sprinkled with truffle oil, but I couldn't quite taste (or smell) any truffle essence. Otherwise, beef was fresh, moist and tender

2) Capesante e Gamberi ($26)- a pairing of pan-seared scallops topped with caviar atop a bed of onion confit and garlic tiger prawns perched on sundried tomato pesto and lemon butter - quite good. Scallops were succulent and sweet and prawns were huge and crunchy

3) Mozzarella di Bufala con Prosciutto ($24), buffalo mozzarella wrapped in Italian prosciutto - ratio of mozzarella to the silky ribbons of prosciutto was lower than I'd liked

4) Penne Sambuca e Gamberi ($26)-deshelled tiger prawns and sundried tomatoes tossed in a tomato cream sauce and then flamed with a shot of Italian sambuca - probably the best main

5) Risotto con Porco e Porcini ($28)- Italian arborio rice simmered in porcini and champignon mushrooms with white wine braised pork belly and a hint of truffle oil, didn't impress. I couldn't even smell the truffle oil and the addition of the porkbelly was simply one ingredient too many

6) Linguine Frutti di Mare ($32) flat pasta tossed in a medley of crayfish, squid, barramundi fillets, scallops, prawns and green-lipped New Zealand mussels in a zesty tomato chilli sauce - fresh seafood

The whipped potato comes together with this dish and is devilishly good! It has very strong buttery flavour and is superbly creamy. I love it as it melts in the mouth. Wonderful addition to this dish.

The sparkling water is a waste of money though, really should have just taken the still.

As it was a special promotion it was a set menu.. I took the salmon(i dun eat red meat) and the mister took lamb shank which he claimed was good.. but as u can tell the servings quite small... tiramisu was so-so.. lobster bisque was good but too fishy for my personal taste.. oh what i found very delightful(its a bit silly for this) was the bread.. look carefully at the background of the lobster bisque.. u see the platter of dips/spreads for bread? the one on the right is some kidn of garlic butter thing which we had tried in france but cant find here n i really love this!! My bf is french n of course he love the idea of freeflow of free bread which is so usual oin france but not here..

atmosphere here is wonderful.. for romantic nights.. guys.. bring ur dates here!!

Because of the special promotion.. i think we paid less than half of the usual price.. so was a good deal.. other than that.. keep this place for the special occasion where u wanna splurge!

This squid ink pasta is straight on the mark! The right taste and the perfect blend with the seafood. The scallops were not too fantastic though. They lack the freshness I expect from a restaurant of this standing plus the price we're paying for. The prawns were alright though. So overall, the dish suffers from the fresh burst of seafood one who expect but scores on the lovely squid ink sauce. Certainly a must try for people who like squid ink pasta.

The seafood risotto ($32) is cooked with your choice of sauces: tomato and chili sauce, white wine sauce or squid ink sauce. I chose squid ink simply because it's my favourite sauce, and it turns out to be very tasty. The risotto is cooked with generous amount of fresh seafood, such as scallops, mussles, fish fillets, calamari, as well as the slipper lobster tail. Thumbs up.

However, I find that the standard of their dessert is not as high as the mains. Both Tiramisu and Sticy date pudding taste alright, but no wow factor that worth the price ($13 each).

combination
The main course really wasn’t great,
The pork was pretty tough, it was accompanied with lentils that were unduly sweet &therefore a rather odd ¬ particular pleasant flavour
Dessert was panna cotta with berries & this was one of the richest, creamiest panna cottas I’ve had.
Overall i rate 7/10

Dessert: Sticky Date Pudding ($13) - Moist cake of rich dates and brown sugar draped in a cloak of butterscotch sauce. Seriously, this is overrated. I ordered this after browsing through raves from here. To me, this is just a piece of HUAT KUEH with vanilla ice cream. Didn't like the taste at all.

Marble Cheese Cake for dessert. Secret combination of Philadelphia cream cheese swirled with Valrhona chocolate on a secret base. Somehow the base tasted like some expired crumbles. All in all, i don't think i'll be going back there anymore. Food were just average!

The newly decked up walls feature framed black and white stills of famous Italian personalities, the restaurants soft lights are also perfect for dates. For starters, I had a warm spinach salad tossed with bacon, walnut, vinaigrette and crumbled Greek feta which felt a little too acidic on my tongue.

How about some seafood spiked with a famous tipple? The crowd pleaser, Michelangelo's Penne Sambuca came with generous servings of fresh, plump, tiger prawns sauteed with chilli and sun-dried tomatoes left to Simmering in light tomato based cream and an indulgent shot of 50cl Sambuca. To round of this indulgent Italian dinner,I made a beeline for the sticky date pudding complete with toffee sauce that made my taste bud sing. So I say make a date and saunter by.

Michelangelo’s had been on ”to-go” list. Previously helmed by Chef Angelo ( Started Angelo’s in Kiliney road) and after his departure, Chef Victor Tan took over and introduced a few of his ”own dishes’‘. The stalwarts like penne sambuca still remains on the menu.
Some new dishes being offered, braised boneless beef short ribs , Moroccan Lambshank, Chocolate fondant and The Seared scallops with caviar.

The menu

Recommended starters include the Pan seared scallops with caviar and the Seared Foie gras. Mains are priced on the higher side . They offer a 3 course lunch menu priced at $35 ++ and menu changes fortnightly. If you are feeling adventurous, try 3 course meal, which you can select an appetitzer, a main and a dessert from the ala-carte menu, priced at $58 (pasta) and $68 ( meat / seafood).

Pan seared scallops with carviar on onion confit & sun-dried tomato & pesto( $24++)

I would always love to try the chef’s signature as I believe it showcases the Chef’s skills and talent . This signature starter certainly did not disappoint! 4 de-shelled and crunchy prawns were paired with 3 bouncy and well-seared scallops. The scallops were the star of the show, they were fresh and has a bouncy texture. Paired with caviar and the sweet onion relish, it was perfeccct… particularly the onion relish, which leaves a sweet aftertaste. The prawns were also well-executed, they were not over-cooked and retain the firm texture.

Caesar Salad with poached egg ( $18++)
The Caesar salad was well-presented , top with a wobbly poached egg , slice of baguette and a crispy pancetta. The wobbly egg attracts my attention. I tried my best not to cause the runny egg yolk to leak out but the egg yolk blends in with the romaine lettuce, it taste great! While the caesar cream was too heavy , the crispy pancetta was sort of ”unhealthy” and the baguette ( replaced by croutons) was plain, the runny egg yolk helped to salvage the imperfection.
Sticky date pudding ( $13++)

The sticky date pudding is small but it serves as a filling dessert . I was recommended to try out this sticky date pudding. Frankly speaking, this is my first time trying a sticky date pudding and thus I am not very sure how to rate a sticky date pudding.
The sticky date pudding is served with a scoop of ice-cream butterscotch sauce and some fruits. The pudding was sweet and dense but towards the end, I felt that the base was a little charred but generally the pudding was average.

Verdict: A pleasant dining experience at Michelangelo’s. I have not been to Michelangelo’s and thus I was not sure whether the standard has risen or (dropped) after the departure of Chef Angelo but in IMHO, the scallops were yums!
