Wondering around Arab St. and eventually made my way to found this interesting cafe located near a few pubs and have a try on their soft serve. So, I tried their Raspberry Burst. Sadly, the serving is too fake; it's completely an artificial colouring and flavouring dessert. And all you can taste is the super sweetness from sugars.

Blackcurrent Lemonade ($4.90)
It looks quite cloudy when served. When fully mixed, I could not taste the lemonade in the drink. It tastes more like a soda drink. None of the grape flavour too.

Overall not bad. The place is a bit dim in lighting, so difficult to take photos even when sitting by the window.

Tucked along Bali Lane, Stateland is one café that's not to miss if you are around Bugis. Started by a group of young entrepreneurs about 2 years ago, Stateland Cafe has come a long way and proven itself as a worthy competitor among the café scene in that district. This vintage industrial themed café has an extensive yet concise menu that serves mains (pasta and All Day Breakfast), dessert (waffles and toast) and beverages.

I ordered the S'more Waffles which had chocolate ice cream and toasted marshmallows on the dark chocolate infused waffle ($14.9). To add-on the chocolatey craze, dark chocolate dark was drizzled for final touches. Basically, whatever that can be paired or filled with chocolate wasn't spared in this case.
Despite of the overload of chocolate, it surprisingly wasn't jelak at all. The only fuss that I had over this waffle was its lack of crisp. It was soft and had a bit of fluff.
Generally, given the hype about Stateland Cafe, I wasn't that impressed after my visit. However, I wouldn't mind heading down again to try other flavoured waffles and their toast too! By the way, this café opens till mid night, so it's a perfect spot to chill after a long day at work!

Heard about the famous Stateland waffles so we decided to try it out one day. The cafe is very small with around 10 tables. The decorations portray a rustic feel. The waffle has the egg taste but is crunchy and tasted good with chocolate.( But then again, everything taste good with chocolate!) We then ordered the Classic Honey Toast, which is the best of the 3 dishes. The toast were crispy on the outside and the berries added a little sour taste to the toast when eaten together. There was a jug of honey where you could decide how much honey you would like together with the toast.

Finally, the Black Forest Waffle (SGD$14.90) arrived - dark chocolate waffle served with cherry, whipped cream and Belgium chocolate gelato and chocolate sauce.

The grids were crispy and the waffle was fluffy inside. The rich chocolate ice-cream and sauce enhanced the flavor of the dark chocolate waffle (my first eating a lovely chocolatey waffle). There were dark cherries found within the mixture of cream and creamy gelato, making this simple dessert a real delight.
I wish to add too that the gelato was amazing - I was replying emails and getting some online errands done while enjoying my sinfully good waffle slowly, but the ice-cream did not melt into a gooey mess nor did the waffle turn soggy even after an hour. Thumbs up for Stateland waffle - now I understand what the fuss is about.

The Classic Honey Toast ($11.90): It’s their signature toast. Toast baked with honey and salted butter topped with berries and served with scoop of honey gelato. Although toast is crispy, but it’s a little too hard and dense on the inside. It will be good if exterior is crispy and interior is softer. Very unique taste of honey gelato, very light and not too sweet.

S’MORES ($14.90): Dark chocolate waffle with toasted marshmallow, chocolate sauce and biscuits. Serve with a scoop of belgium chocolate gelato. Very chocolatey dish. In fact, i’m overwhelm with chocolates. The chocolate taste and aroma just burst in your mouth once you bite into the waffle. The toasted marshmallow is really good too, instant melt in your mouth. The belgium chocolate is rich, creamy and smooth. Has a slight bitter cocoa note at the end. But it’s almost impossible to finish it on your own, its good for sharing, as you’ll get sick of it after eating too much as the chocolate is too overpowering.
Generally, decent desserts for sharing, but not to finish on your own as it’s too heavy.

The highlight of our dinner was this red velvet waffle. It was crispy on the outside and moist on the inside. Topped with ice cream, it was perfect. Perhaps, one of the best waffles in town! I'll be back for their desserts, but not for their main courses.

What struck me immediately upon entering the cafe was the severe lack of space. The tiny shop had hardly any room to walk, or even snap any pictures. Most of the blog posts I have read gave me the impression that it was spacious and airy, but no. We had to squeeze through the aisles and look, I can't even take a picture of the shop properly without having my companion's elbow in the shot! (He was trying his best to dodge my camera).

I really enjoyed cutting through the tall tower of the eggs benedict. The mushrooms tasted great despite the lack of gravy or sauce. I guess the mushrooms are the only delicious part of their eggs benedict.

I was really excited to try the much-raved about Red Velvet Waffle. It looked grand upon arrival! Seems like the trio really know how to present their food well. However, the waffle looks burnt, doesn't it? Not red at all.

Cutting through the waffle, it seemed to me that artificial red colouring was used, rather than the traditional beetroot extract. Why should I pay a whopping $14.90 to kill myself? Most other reviews describe how delicious Stateland's food is; perhaps my visit was only a one-off disaster. But nope, I don't think I'll be returning any time soon.

First impressions count... Stateland Cafe reminds me a little of a cross-between Group Therapy Cafe in and PoTeaTo in terms of decor, a little half-renovated vibe and the comfortable private space between tables. Their menu offer quite a spread across brunch standard items like Egg's Benedict, pastas, toasts, waffles and of course, coffee.

It doesn't take a genius anymore to know what I would order but a mocha for the afternoon. Only God knows how many gallons of this thing I've drunk, just like every other caffeine addicts out there. Stateland Cafe's mocha is pretty fifty-fifty on the caffeine-chocolate ratio, relinquishing the caffeine's bitter aftertaste. It doesn't top my favourite mocha at Yellow Cup Coffee, but pretty good in its own way.

Which I must say, I love incredibly. Red velvet usually materializes in the form of cakes, but Stateland Cafe reinvents it in good ol' hipster tradition of waffles. The rich cranberry and chocolate waffle base was so fluffy and slightly crispy, drizzled with a good dose of cream cheese sauce, sprinkled with chocolate flakes and topped with a vanilla ice-cream scoop with cranberries on top. It's quality with every bite, and they are so generous with the serving that happiness was almost literally bubbling inside me. Okay, I overuse the word literally - but you know what I mean! It's definitely not cloying or too sweet, and well, what can I say but - GO TRY IT. You won't regret it.
This cafe is stowed away in the most unassuming lanes around, parallel to Haji Lane. A lovely place for gatherings, dates or birthday celebrations in your girly groups.

Visit http://spherepiece.blogspot.sg/2014/05/food-feat-stateland-cafe-bali-lane.html for the menu.

Located at Bali Lane near Arab St, it is on the same stretch of road as Choo Choo Chicken. The signage is not as conspicuous and you might pass by without realizing it. Needless to say, the crowd will guide you there as it did on a Sunday afternoon.

Interior

The capacity of the café is limited because the café is really small. Be prepared to wait if you want to sit inside. There is a communal table with tall chairs outside on the corridor if you are less inclined to wait to dine in the comforts of the air-conditioned interior of the café.

According to the news, the three young owners of this café did not have to spend much on decorating the café because their families are in the construction, metal and woodworks industries that they got the materials at cost price or for free. The interior of the café is quite minimal but it worked to provide a cosy ambience. Little touches like these gave the café some character and it shows that you do not need to spend a lot to decorate a place tastefully.

Strawberry Lemonade (Left) and Mint Lemonade (Right)- $6.90 each

Since R and I had trekked some distance to get to the cafe, we were hot and sweaty given Singapore's humid conditions. It was especially humid that day that we foregone our coffee orders in favour of cold lemonades. We ordered it with the expectations that the lemonades would quench our thirst and quell the heat we were faced with. The "lemonades" looked pretty, quenched our thirst and quelled the heat but they caused a surge of disappointment. WHAT LEMONADE?! The slices of lemon were probably the closest we got to having LEMON in our ADE. These were glasses of cordial topped with soda water masquerading as lemonades.
Darn, I should have stayed with my coffee order!Eggs Benedict $14.90

What is brunch without the quintessential brunch food item- Eggs Benedict? Two poached eggs on top of ham and brioche toast, topped with hollandaise, home-made tomato chilli jam and stewed Mushrooms. To be honest, the appearance of the ham threw me off. It looked very processed and scared me. However, the pillowy soft and sweet brioche, runny poached eggs, creamy and well-flavoured hollandaise, sweet and not-at-all spicy tomato chilli jam and the utterly delicious stewed mushrooms made up for it. They are the true stars of the dish! When you eat everything together, the ham is lost in the equation and a wonderful symphony of flavours will engulf your tastebuds instead. Never judge a dish by its looks!

Red velvet waffles $14.90

For those uninitiated to the famed Red Velvet cake, it is a chocolate cake coloured red with cream cheese frosting. Stateland reinvents the traditional Red Velvet Cake into a waffle. Here, the way the waffle is served takes top marks. The Red Velvet waffle is a chocolate-flavoured waffle coloured deep-red. I like the bits of chocolate chip that came with every bite of waffle. The waffle was crisp on the outside and soft inside. It was relatively light and the toppings (cream cheese glaze, vanilla ice-cream and dehydrated raspberries) complemented the waffle well.

The Black Forest $14.90

The Black Forest Waffle is a take on the traditional Black Forest Cake. It is essentially a dark chocolate waffle rippled with chocolate chips, topped with whipped cream, Belgium chocolate ice-cream and poached cherry compote. Since my dear friend does not like cherries, we asked for the compote to be served on the side. She tasted the compote and said she couldn't really taste the cherry flavour and that it is like a jam! As such, she said it was okay to put them on the waffle since we were sharing. we rarely agree when it comes to food but on this occasion, I concur with her. Until you bite into the pitted cherries hidden amongst the compote, the compote does not bear any distinct cherry flavour on its own. There is also a slight gelatinous feel to it- probably from the pectin from the cherries- that makes this compote more jam-like.

At the end, we concluded that the only dish that we truly enjoyed was the Eggs Benedict. While the waffles were very photogenic, the flavours failed to wow. They impressed R less than they did for me. There is no novelty in the flavour of the waffles because once you take away the fancy names, the Black Forest waffle is a dark chocolate waffle with chocolate ice-cream, cream and a compote. It is a combination that is common enough. Similarly, it applies to the Red Velvet waffle though I will concede that a cream cheese glaze is not common. Overall, the concept is good but more needs to be done to the waffles for me to order them again. Also, the "lemonades" are misleading and feels like a rip off for $6.90 each. If I ever do return again, I will try the thick toasts and order coffee instead!

Ice Latte ($5.70) and Home-made Strawberry Lemonade ($4.90). What I like about their lemonade is that it isn't sour at all

Eggs Benedict ($14.90). Two poached eggs served on buttered toasts, stewed mushrooms, grilled tomatoes and creamy hollandaise sauce.
Omelette ($13.90). Two egg omelette with cream and milk, served with stewed mushrooms, grilled tomatoes and tomato chili jam.
I really love their toasts because it is soft and not crispy like those we had in hotel's breakfast, and home-made toasts! Egg benedict is flowy, and omelette is runny to a certain extent.
Belgium Waffles ($10.90) with vanilla ice cream, fresh fruits and Stateland's waffle sauce. If you are the health-conscious type, you can opt for the non-ice cream version, which cost $8.90 instead!
Quite easy to miss it although situated along the main street. Parking is a problem because there isn't really any designated parking lot. So be prepared to either risk it, or do some leg exercise

Menu is limited to six mains, where two belongs to pastas. But I strongly believe either of the main will be able to leave a smile on your face

A small little cafe located near Kampong Glam, Bali Lane, where all the bars, pubs and cafes are, Stateland make its entrance there. The cafe serve all day breakfast, pasta, coffees, cakes and waffles. Its a good place to chill and there are not alot of people too. Will recommend for a chill out place.

Wow, look nice. A bottle of maple syrup is given too, but i suggest you do not need to pour. The toast itself is already buttery and sweet, especially the center of the toast. The ice cream and the butter make the toast sweet already. Delicious vanilla ice cream too. Berries are fresh. However, some part of the toast are especially hard. I had a hard time cutting through. Other than that, this dish is quite ok and tasty to me.

Look good, but look can be deceiving. The cake is harder than i thought it is. Maybe because it is cold? That is what i thought and give the excuse, but actually not this case. The outer coating is sweet, together with the shaved coconut, making this cake alot sweeter.

Cheap is one thing, presentation is another. Just a cup of tea without refill does not really impress me very much. The tea is from Twinning if you are wondering what brand of tea bag.

The menu here is rather simple, and reasonably priced.

The coffees here are made using the Terra Firma blends from Papa Palheta. The Macchiato ($3.90) provides a single shot of espresso, which has a slightly acidic and bitter taste.

The Latte ($4.70) tasted strong and firm with the right amount of milk added.

The Belgium Waffles ($10.90) comes with a chocolate ice cream, fresh fruits and Stateland’s waffle sauce. This is possibly one of the best waffles coming from a cafe. Crusty on the outside, soft and moist on the inside, this goes well especially with the chocolate ice cream.

This place is a great place to come to for their coffee and food after some shopping within the area, so if you are around the Kampong Glam area, this should not be missed!

Eggs Benedict ($14.90) is a dish I usually would not give a miss. The ones here have poached eggs served atop buttered toasts with sides of grilled tomatoes and stewed mushrooms. The eggs were runny but the whites were a wee bit stiff. Hollandaise sauce was lightly flavoured and was rather creamy. The stewed mushrooms were earthy and flavourful which was really tasty while the grilled tomatoes were soft. The homemade chili jam was a unique part of the dish, which was tangy with very mild spiciness. The dish could have been better if the toast was crispier.

Stateland’s Honey Toast ($10.90) is Stateland Cafe’s signature dessert. A buttered toast served with a Vanilla ice-cream with fresh fruits, honey and icing sugar accompanied, it was a sweet and salty combination. Despite it being a dessert, it was subtly sweet instead of being intensive. The crispiness of the toast also makes it addictive.

We were served a complimentary slice of Orange Tofu Cheesecake. Smooth and soft, it contains a light cream cheese flavour and uplifting tinge of tanginess. Definitely something I wish would appear on the display shelves!

Papa Pahelta’s Terra Firma blend is used for the coffee here. The Latte ($4.70) was creamy and aromatic, carrying a nutty flavour at the end of each sip. Mocha ($4.90) was however a unique taste of slightly bitter chocolate, therefore not overwhelming the beverage with sweetness.
