perhaps i should start off with the dessert first and explain what 'torte' is. haha i thought it was just some classy name, but apparently it is a kind of dessert! a torte is a (SUPER) rich flourless cake, and is really really dense and chocolate-y. a few mouthfuls of the Signature Torte ($3.50), and you'll start to feel the weight of it already. top it off with a cold creamy ice-cream (+$1), and it balances out the taste beautifully. i would still advise you to share it though. trying to finish one yourself will probably ruin the whole experience because you might just get a little sick of the taste after awhile.

all the desserts are SUPER RICH, SUPER CREAMY, SUPER SWEET. haha take the challenge and try them! (:

torte produces its own gourmet chips ($3.50) - yam & sweet potato if i remember correctly! these are painstakingly shaved by the assistant chef everyday and deep-fried freshly for consumption. the result is crisply thin slices of chips with an interesting sprinkle of seasoning, and are positively addictive, yet they feel somewhat less sinful than your average potato chips.

i thoroughly enjoyed the shrimp dumplings ($7.50 for 10pcs). all the dishes here are made in-house from scratch, so there is none of that packaged nonsense you grab from the supermarket shelf. the shrimps are uber fresh, and encased in a crisp crackly casing. the soy sauce that comes as a complement simply brings the flavours together nicely.

absolutely LOVED the buffalo wings ($7.50) here!!! for once, chicken wings which are generously drenched with the sauce. how many times have i tolerated a skimpy amount of sauce which is barely enough to cover the meat. at torte, every single inch of the chicken is covered in a thick layer slightly sweet barbeque sauce. it is accompanied with a dollop of blue cheese which was surprisingly not bad! the addition of savouriness to the dish further enhanced the flavour of the chicken.

we tried the sliders - which are mini burgers that are super cute!!! haha. the beef with bleu cheese ( $9.50) had a rather strong flavour of blue cheese, which i still couldnt really appreciate, but i loved the soft onions inside which lent a sweet dimension to the burger.

i enjoyed the beef with guacamole ($11) sliders! it seemed like such a healthy dish haha. oh yeah, it came with a generous serving of fresh salad as well!

I had bought their Lemon cheesecake and chocolate torte to try at office the day before. The cheesecake was really good, light and not too sweet. The torte is very chocolately and can be a little sweet for people who dont enjoy sweet stuffs.

Hidden in a corner of SCWO (Singapore Council of Women's Organisations) at Waterloo Street, we were surprised to find this secret hideout almost full. We managed to occupy the last table available at about 8ish on a Friday night. Most were there for their rather affordable mains and of course, the torte for which their cafe is named after.

Torte is usually a multi-layered cake made with buttercream, mousse, jam or fruits. Its unique taste lies in how it is made with little or no flour, giving it a dense and smooth texture. Famous for its chocolate torte, I thought it must be worth a visit even though I'm not a fan of chocolates.

Afraid that we would get too jelat with just the chocolate torte and after finishing a rather fiery dinner, we decided to complement it with this chilled creme caramel, hoping to douse our tongues that were on fire. I was rather alarmed to see it being served in such small portion and it looked rather ready-made. As you can see, it's just the pudding at the bottom drizzled with gula melaka at the top. A rather fuss-free serving method I suppose.

There wasn't a tinge of caramel taste in it, unlike the traditional kind which would have a layer of caramel poured into the base before adding the custard. The caramel sauce on top was also substituted with gula melaka. The custard was a tad hard (imagine the agar kind of hardness) and the gula melaka lacked its coconut fragrance. The thick sauce became overly sweet for our liking and it would have been better if it wasn't so dense. It felt like thick sugar syrup drizzled over hardened custard pudding.

The presentation of desserts has always been important to me as desserts are usually my form of indulgence. I was shocked that the chef told us as a matter-of-fact that the ice cream had slipped and simply placed it on our table after that, serving the next table the exact same dessert with the ice cream intact. The ice cream was also very melted, and as we peered over the next table, it looked almost the same.

I shall not be biased, so beyond the presentation, I was actually quite interested to find out what a torte tastes like. Digging into the rich chocolate portion, it was extremely smooth and tasted just like a slightly harder version of pudding. It wasn't served warm as what we'd expected but I supposed the chilled version goes better with the smooth velvet texture of the torte. It was rich, yet not overpowering nor overly sweet, and didn't have the bitter taste of dark chocolates. It won me, the non chocolate lover, over and I thought this was one of the rare chocolate desserts that I actually enjoyed. It really depends though, as my friends thought it was a little too rich for their liking. I thought it went really well with the ice cream, though it would have been better if the ice cream wasn't on the verge of becoming milk shake right upon serving. It was very soft throughout, probably been placed outside for quite a while before it reached our table, or the fridge wasn't working very well.

I'd probably return if I have chocolate cravings since this is a rare place where I like the way it was prepared. Service wise, I thought they weren't quite up to it as we were quite lost with their cues. After asking us to take a seat when we wanted to have a look at the menu inside and order immediately, they took quite a while to reach us and even the payment took quite a while. I'm still quite anal about the attitude towards the messed up presentation of the torte too, but taste wise, I would still recommend that you give their torte a shot.

My chicken was generously drizzled in peppered sauce. As such, the taste was absorbed down to the bone. It was also cooked very tender and as soon as my knife touched the meat, it easily fell off the bone. As for the potatoes, they were a good replacement for rice. Salad was also fresh provided a healthy aspect to my meal.

You can't really leave Torte without trying the desserts. After all, Chef is known for his desserts. I ordered the Chocolate Torte and my gosh-- it was one of the best I've tasted. It wasn't too sweet but it was very rich. It was drizzled with chocolate sauce and sitting on top is vanilla ice cream. Two thumbs up!!

This is my second visit to Torte. Torte is one of the cafes around the area that serves rather cheap lunches. Although it is a one-man restaurant (Jason is the chef, waiter, and boss), food was served within a reasonable time when there weren't too many customers. Tried the chicken this time round - your average chicken with some spices, and comes with many little potatoes (there were much more potatoes as I did not want the greens that comes with it). Service was good.

Their signature dessert is the Chocolate Torte with Ice Cream. Rich and dense chocolate cake which is moist and tastes more like fudge than your usual chocolate cake. Vanilla Ice Cream was good as well.

I had their Mushroom Risotto ($10) which was a delightful risotto dish cooked with generous portions of white mushrooms, cheese and a touch of truffle oil. The creamy broth which the risotto is cooked in is fragrant. The rice is really moist and flavourful. The dish also comes with fresh greens drizzled in dressing and cheese.

The Apple Pie dessert ($4.50) is an awesome dessert with layers of cooked warm apple bits drizzled in rich caramel sauce and topped with a scoop of ice cream. The warm apple filling has been cooked with an alluring mix of cinnamon and raisins. This is an apple-licious comfort food!

The best part is, desserts will only set you back by $4.50! I particularly like the chocolate torte, so for a small affordable piece (square) of chocolate heaven and affordable food, do visit this place!

My cousin sis, a good eater too, brought me for such a good hideout just a block away from my house where I always passed but never gave a try because it looked too al-fresco and high expensive-y.

We had our tums filled with a good dinner popular choice and their unique dessert style.

Before watching WICKED, I had then a properly wickedly good healthy meal ending with a strawberry cheesecake sweetness.

His deep fried battered fish fillet - forgot the name of the fish - in potato wedges and salad was in a fresh and healthy proportion of meal. The big fillet fish, fried in herbs, was visibly seen in the fried skin, which added a delectable smell and properly soft, melting white meat in your mouth, with the flavored wedges hidden underneath the fillet which was utterly ghooood, and the fresh salad in light oil dressing. The meal was priced affordably in a chic corner of the city for $13.90.

In town, I tell you, can't find this price and place, anywhere else.

The chef, Jason, which my sis introduced and knew him well was only the one-man cook and coming in to say that "this is not your mere fish. Fresh water wish compared to the dory fillet which eats trash like catfish, this one eats clean hence the very white-colored meat."

I ate it off like there's no tomorrow as fish fillets are my home menu by day. Of course, as its more well done and far better in food styling than home cooked.

Desserts, desserts, desserts, hear hear. Their new style soft strawberry cheesecake has such a soft texture that it is creme brulee style cheesecake, as so to say, and approved by the chef of course (hooray, points for me there). That was the hot dessert. The other was the traditional sliced cheesecake strawberry, but in this case where you expect such thickness, this one was on the milky side where it isn't too salty and gives a fine, soothing not overpowering finish.

It was a good early dinner where we own the place with no one else and just the chef chatting and serving away. I'm not overrating this review, as this place is too good to be true.

2. Cream Caramel: rich gooey with the slight bitterness of a good caramel.

3. Blueberry Cheesecake: another winner!

4. Chiffon Pandan Bundt: Such a blast from the past when everyone was serving this up. The version here comes in individual manageable sizes and is moister than most, with none of the synthetic eggy taste or towelly texture that accompanies most confectionary bought chiffon cakes.

5. Chocolate Torte: the cafe's signature dessert and namesake that is just to die for and worth the whole trip. The texture is like what you would get if a dense and gooey brownie married a chocolate lava cake.

Haven't had a chance to taste their food but expect good things from this place.
