Wanton Noodle. OK Jun 01, 2013

Categories : Cantonese/Hong Kong | Hawker Centre | Roasted Meat | Noodles

This stall has recently featured in a food programme that aired just about a week or so ago. I kinda expected the queue to be long but never did i expect it to be so extremely long. I was there at about 11.55 am and started to queue then. I counted. It has got about 20+ customers queuing in front so i kinda estimated the queuing time to be about 30 minutes. I waited. I was still in the queue 30 minutes later. I waited. There were still 5 customers right in front of me at about 15 minutes later. I only managed to order at about 1 pm. Some customers came to take away many packets of rice and noodle. I guess that would be the main reason of such a long waiting time though the queue might not seemed to be as long.

I was told that roasted meat have already sold out.
Wanton Noodle at $3.

Wanton Noodle at $3.

So, i decided to go with the wanton noodle for $3. The well-marinated char siew nicely roasted to give it the beautifully carmalised dark red color with a slightly charred surface. It has got a good mixture of the fat and the lean part of meat to give it the desirable tenderness with the just right balance of sweet and salty taste.

The noodle has got a noticeable springiness and it tasted nice after mixed in the chilli.
Plump-looking wanton.

Plump-looking wanton.

A bowl of soup with 2 pieces of wanton came along with the noodle. The wantons were of a slightly bigger than average size. It has got a good amount of minced meat and prawn filling. I could actually see and taste the prawn in it. It tasted wonderfully fresh. The soup tasted light with a slightly peppery taste.
The Stall.

The Stall.

When i went back to take the picture of the stall at 1.15 pm, the stall was about to close. They left their last few plates of noodles and gone is the long queue too. They were already sold out before their usual closing time at 2 pm.

So, is it worth the queue? i seriously doubt so. The taste of their wanton noodle is good but not exceptionally outstanding. I am rather certain i would not queue another hour just to taste it again.

I would be delightful to eat it again only if the queue is short with reasonable amount of waiting time.

Steamboat Dinner for 5 OK Mar 19, 2013
Categories : Chinese | Restaurant | Steamboat/Hot Pot | BBQ

smile The bill comes up about $180++. There are varieties of soup base to choose from and my fav will be tom yum but as it goes dry, saltiness can be felt so remember to ask them for refill. The food variety is okay. Lots of seafood and meat, plus different types of noodles. It is sold package. But please note that it does not include any drinks, if I'm not wrong. We ordered flower tea separately. Provides u with 3 types of sauces and if you need those cut chilli, do ask from them. There are desserts available. We ordered banana split. Overall is just a normal steamboat restaurant. If you are a steamboat lover and like hopping around different steamboat restaurant, include this in your list though I would not come again after a first try.

Value For Money Western Fare OK Jan 21, 2013
Share on TwitterShare on Facebook
Categories : Restaurant | Steaks and Grills

It been a long time since we went shopping at City Square, we decided to visit this mall. On arrival, we decided to fuel up before hitting the shops.. We wanted to try something new and came across Barbacoa.

According to their facebook, the name Barbacoa means slow cooking of meat over the fire by the Taino people in the Carribbean.

Ambience
It is setup simply like a Cafe, on one side of the wall you have enlarge photos of the dishes in the menu. It is decorated with a Wild West and Mexican theme. You can see the chefs cooking in the glass window kitchen.

The menu is mostly western food like spaghetti, pork chops and ribs. We ordered different Mains to be shared.

Pasta Mushroom Aglio Olio with Bacon
The spaghetti was nicely cooked ala denta with olive oil and mushroom. We topped up $2 for bacon. It may look plains but the bacon bits and mushroom gives it a crunchy and soft bite at the same time.

Signature Ribs.
This is one of their specialty. We were served with tender pork ribs which the meat easily come off the bone. It has a smoky flavour. It is served with thick fries and vegetables. You can opt for different sauces such as Hickory Smoked BBQ, Honey Cranberry, Black Pepper BBQ, Pineapple BBQ etc.
Pork Chop

Pork Chop

Flamed Grilled Pork Chop
The pork chop has the criss cross mark of the flamed grilled. Pork was tender and has a Pepper sauce to be eaten with the meat. It also comes with fries and vegetables.

Mixed Sausages
It is basically 3 different types of jumbo sausages served with a kind of Mustard sauce. It has Pork and Chicken Sausage which is of decent quality. For Kids who loves Sausages this could be a dish to order. This was an Appertizer dish.
Cream of Mushroom Soup

Cream of Mushroom Soup

All the main dishes comes with free soup of the day which was Cream of Mushroom and Ice Cream.
Ice Cream

Ice Cream

Overall the food is decent and value for money considering you get a Soup and Dessert with the Main Course.

This is the promotion they have now!!! lol

Chef's Salad
Price varies ($10 for photo above)

The portion was overall quite small and there were a little amount of berries only! So depressing to have this at $10, way overpriced.

Fish N Chips
$15

I didn't get to try the fish, but the fries tasted normal. I guess there's nothing much special we can expect from FishNChips?

Ok here's mine!!

Seafood Cherry Tomato with Penne
$17

For the price of $17, I guess it's just two dollars more than usual averaged priced spaghetti. Perhaps the only thing worthwhile about this dish was the seafood that they've included in. Two mussels and very few clams. Not that great either.

What was then displeasing about, was the toughness of the penne.

It was really tough, at least to me. I'm not sure if penne are supposed to be prepared like this, but I'm sure as a consumer myself, I wouldn't like the texture of the penne to be hard.

Salmon Steak
$18

My friend commented that this was good. But you can see that the portion of it isn't very big. But I guess this is pretty good enough for the price you are paying for! Definitely not enough for a man who has a huge appetite though. ;)

I also found out something interesting about the cafe!
They served iced water with strawberries in it! No wonder the iced water tasted a little better and sweeter than the usual iced water we usually drink. If lemons are included, I understand it's to kill the germs. But strawberries... why?

The ambience at the cafe
Since I do not have a photo of how the cafe looks like, let me try to describe it to you.
A small petite sized cafe located at the corner of Scape (orchard), level 2 (on the level same as gongcha and toast box).
There's very limited seats in the cafe it has, I think I can count it - roughly 6 x 4seaters table. There are roughly 3 tables outdoors only.

I went with my friends in a group of 8 and the cafe was so secluded and quiet such that we're the only people at the cafe. We indeed had the whole cafe to ourselves! It's definitely a good place to come with your other half or good friends (smaller group) because since it's very quiet here, you can have a relaxing time here, chit-chatting and enjoy the strawberry-flavoured iced water. Haha.

About the service
There were only 2 waitress, one chef.
Imagine the speed of the food served.
The food were served one, by, one. Which means if your friends have the habit of waiting everyone's food to be served before tucking in, the first dish served will definitely turned cold by the time the last is served. So one bad thing about coming in a big group ya!

Okay hope you liked my review! smile
