Black pepper chicken Smile Jul 29, 2013

When you walk past this little shop at the train station, you will always smell a whiff of their freshly-baked pies. The smell simply engulfs you as you step into the shop and you can't help but buy one of their pies. I got the Black Pepper Chicken Pie ($1.30). It was slightly burnt at one side as you can see from the picture. However, the filling was wonderful. The black pepper gravy did not ooze out of the pie but it was nicely integrated into the chicken. If you buy 5 pies, you even get one free. This makes for a delightful mid-day snack and it is not oily. The best part is that it is halal so our Muslim friends can enjoy this too!

Mui fan Smile Jul 29, 2013

You can always count on Mei Chin to deliver quality food. I've tried the zi char dishes at this place and it never disappoints. This time, I decided to opt for a dish that was more plain instead of the meat/ vegetable dishes. I got the mui fan. I like the mui fan because it wasn't too starchy and the ingredients used were fresh. There were about 3-4 pieces of prawns and squid each. Mei Chin was also generous with their vegetables. This is a comfort food for me as it reminds me of how I used to mix my soup in my rice except this wasn't as watery. It was a nice and simple meal.

Steamed food OK Jul 28, 2013
Categories : Singaporean | Chinese | Food Court | Rice

This is the Steamed Pork Ribs with Black Bean ($4.50). The pork ribs were rather small and did not have much meat. It was mostly bones. I like the peppery taste in the gravy though.

This is the Signature Dish- Sausage, Chicken and Mushroom ($6.50). The sausage was good as it did not contain too much fat and it felt healthier. Chicken was smooth and had the taste of the gravy infused in the skin. Mushrooms were big and juicy.

This is the Kai Lan with Special Sauce ($3.50). I found the kai lan sauce to be quite salty. I told the stall worker that it was salty and she replied that it is their special sauce and it comes that way. This explanation was insufficient as their chef could have lessened the amount of salt that was added in. Vegetables looked fresh and had a vibrant green colour to it.

I will try other dishes at this stall as it does seem healthier. They also offer a brown rice option instead of the normal white rice.

pork floss bun OK Jul 28, 2013

This is Breadtalk's Signature Pork Floss Bun ($1.70). The price has increased over the years and honestly, I don't think it is worth it for this price. I can get the same bread elsewhere for a lot cheaper and the quality would be about the same. I only patronized BreadTalk as I was in a mall and there didn't seem to be another bakery. Nevertheless, the bread was indeed soft and the floss was fluffy. I don't doubt that BreadTalk sells quality bread but I find that the price is a little steep.

Sushi...  OK Jul 28, 2013   (Related Review)

Categories : Japanese | Sushi/Sashimi | Kids-Friendly

Tried some interesting creations at Sakae the other day.

This is the Hotate Bliss Set ($13.99) that comes with a bowl of rice and soup. The Hotate Bliss is made up of one scallop and a few chicken chunks on a piece of brinjal. I'm not sure how anyone can stuff the whole thing in their mouths so I ate it separately. It was ok overall.

This is Okura with Ika Gunkan ($2.29). This sushi is SO slimy! The lady's finger on its own already contains some slime. This whole thing was just swimming in my mouth. Luckily for the rice to balance out the slime. Wouldn't order this again.

This is the Salmon Kamaage ($2.29) which is basically the part of the salmon near the fin and also a piece of salmon meat. This is deep-fried and it is very crispy. Be careful when you eat it because it's hot!
