Located at the heart of Jalan Besar, in the district of Little India, Swee Choon Tim Sum Restaurant had always been popular among Singaporeans and tourists. Swee Choon Tim Sum Restaurant opened for business in 1962 and had been around for more then 50 years.
Swee Choon Tim Sum Restaurant served a combination of both Hong Kong and ShangHai Dim Sum. They provides both air- conditioned as well as alfresco dining in the back alley.
If you are want to dine in the air conditioned part of the restaurant, I will advise you to be there early especially for dinner time to beat the queue.
If you are hungry when you reached the restaurant like me, you can skip the queue by choosing to sit at the non air-conditioned part of the restaurant or the alfresco dining.
Personally, I prefer the alfresco dining in back alley even though the lighting was quite bad for photo taking. I like the feeling that you are not dinning in the modern Singapore, it kind of bring you back in time when people dine at the road side.

Fried Mee Sua
This is one of Swee Choon's Signature dish, Fried Mee Sua. This plate of Fried Mee Sua may look easy to cook, however it requires a lot of skills. Normally, Mee Sua has this very soft texture and easily broken. The chef did a pretty good job in frying this plate of Mee Sua as the each strain of noodle is so springy and fragrant. The shredded cabbages and bean sprouts added crunch to the noodle. The most critical part that the chef had passed was that the plate of Mee Sua is not oily at all. I had also been not a lover toward carbohydrate, but this time round I really cannot stop eating the Fried Mee Sua.

Mee Sua Kueh
Other Mee Sua dishes by Swee Choon and also their Signature dish. However, this time round, I am not very impress with the Mee Sua Kueh. The Mee Sua Kueh is a creative version of carrot cake. The top layer is Pan Fried Crispy Mee Sua and the bottom layer is soft Mee Sua with Kueh. I feel that the Mee Sua Kueh was quite greasy. Not sure isn't that I had left it on the table for quite a while. My boyfriend did not really like it too. We both find the texture is too soft.

Swee Choon located at Jalan Besar opposite Berseh Food Centre is so popular that it occupy 5 units of shophouses along this stretch of road. It is in the between both Farrer Park and Lavendar MRT stations, a good 10 to 15 minutes walk away from either stations.

Occupying 5 units, Swee Choon offers both alfresco dining and air-conditioned (indoor) dining. In addition, it has a unit which cater only to walk-in customers who order takeaways.

As we already knew that there would be a long queue if we arrived late, we made it a point to arrive at 630pm on a Friday for dinner. Luckily for us, we got the last available table at the indoor (air-conditioned) dining area.

Chrysantheum Tea $1.30 per pax

For drinks, we ordered their Chrysantheum Tea which cost $1.30 per pax. It was served in a metal pot and is refillable. They mixed the tea bags themselves. The Chrysantheum Tea was quite good as it was light, refreshing, fragrant and help to wash down the grease.

Mee Suah Kueh $2

Swee Choon's signature Mee Suah Kueh $2; deep-fried vermicelli cake (mee sua) which can only be found at Swee Choon. Show this kueh to anyone and they would associate it with Swee Choon. Almost every table ordered this. I thought that this was unique and not bad. But I will not rate it as a die die must try as the standard seemed to be inconsistent and it was a little too greasy. One of the kueh could have been fried a little longer. The texture was unique. Crisp, rough texture on the outside while the interior was moist.

Fried Golden Doufu (Tofu) $3.50

This Fried Golden Doufu (Tofu) $3.50 was surprisingly good. Despite the simplicity, it was well executed. The tofu was fried till it was crispy on the outside. The addition of the pork floss at the top was the icing on the cake.

The Steamed Pork Ribs $2.50 was a let down. The part of the pork served was not pork rib and it was either too fatty or was all bones.

Overall, Swee Choon Dim Sum Restaurant is worth a try. There were hits and misses in the dishes we ordered. Service wise, despite the restaurant being full, the staff were efficient. It was easy getting the attention of the staff. Do note that this restaurant only accepts cash or nets. They do not accept credit card. Also, they do not take any reservation.

As we left Swee Choon Dim Sum Restaurant at close to 8pm, we saw a queue! It was very thoughtful of the restaurant owner to provide chairs outside. If you are planning to visit this restaurant during dinner time, do remember to come early.

It's amazing that even close to 11pm at night, we were surrounded by twilight foodie denizens!
Pictured here is our main course; the handmade Wanton Noodles in Chilli Oil.
Those pale-yellow (almost beige) noodles were turgid & didn't clump together. They also didn't have any of that 'Kee-like' bittery taste reminiscent of our usually deeper yellow noodles found elsewhere!
Oh Yes! Those Huge Wantons filled with mouthfuls of minced meat & chopped chives, married with generous slices of spring onions, chilli & diced fried garlic mixed into the slightly spicy & tangy black vinegar sauce made for a most delightful supper treat!

Although it is a long queue and full house. But the service never be dissappointed. The food was serving quite fast . So rest assured if you see the long queue at outside or full house in inside, the food waiting is quite fast.

Full Blog review : http://cennds.blogspot.sg/2014/02/swee-choon.html

What's on top of the table ?

Xiao Long Bao

The xiao long bao was a bit dry perhaps due to we took too long to eat after it had been served

Portugese Egg Tart

It is so soft and yummy. Ordered more egg tart to eat since it is not craved enough for my stomach

Prawn Har kow

It is gonna be my top choices. Fresh prawn and not too dry.

Chicken Feet

In every where, dim sum can't left out chicken feet because it is nice to enjoy for your meal

Char Siew Bao

Sweet pork with a soft pau skin that can't be left out in Swee Choon

Siew Mai

Order more while you can eat because most of the Dim Sum choice is nice.
But the siew mai serving is displease which only come with 2 pieces .

Yam Fritter

Yam Fritter also comes with 2 pieces but if will makes you quite full if you eat too much because it is fried and the oil that left in Yam Fritter cause your stomach full faster while you eating it

Dumpling

Thanks goodness the dumpling comes in 4 and taste a bit spicy.

The salted egg yolk filling with their soft bao is truly delicious and tasted none of the raw eggy . The custard bun is well made.

How does a chicken taste when it’s swimming in alcohol? This is indeed a love-it-or-hate-it dish. My dad is a loyal supporter, though we had to eat most of it to help him avoid getting over the legal blood alcohol level. Pray that they don’t serve you the smelly chicken backside part (which we got). Oh well, good to eat exotic food once in a while.

Yam pastry is what my family always orders without fail. The yam oozes out a fragrance only available to the diner, and tiny peas and carrot cubes can be sighted in the fillings. The crust is made of crispy fried crumbs, adding a crunch to every bite.

This reminds me of a quick bite during recess in primary school. The outer covering is fresh and soft (not moist), and I love Swee Choon’s baos because they aren’t soggy. The pork fillings are fresh, sweet and fragrant. If you don’t want to order too much, this would make you satisfyingly full.

My brother would highly recommend this to you, though I thought it might be slightly too oily for my liking. However, Swee Choon’s version of this dish gets full marks for authenticity, as it is crispy on the outer layers and juicy in the inner parts, just the way it should be.

One of the more wonderful snacks is the delicious mee suah cake. It can be shared amongst two to three diners, although I would rather gobble down one whole piece myself. The mee suah wasn’t very thick, but fluffy and well-cooked. This dish provides a unique mouthfeel.

One of my favourites is the Har Gao. These shrimp dumplings are slightly more expensive than average, but they are worth every single cent. However, you can infer from the droplets formed on the plate that they have been out of the steamer for a rather long time. They were already slightly cold upon arrival.

Although the meat tasted a little stale, the portion was huge. It’s one of the more affordable Siew Mais around. However, I do have a slight issue with them serving it on metal plates. My idea of Siew Mai is that it comes in baskets, not plates. I guess serving on a metal plate is more hygienic.

Although the skin of these little dragon buns have not been folded eighteen times, it is still comparable to Din Tai Fung’s famed Xiao Long Bao. My lungs were filled with the fragrance of the meat - and my tastebuds did a little dance in my mouth to the exquisite taste. This is one dish we should all take pride in – the ingenious idea of making a ‘pastry’ with soup within is definitely a breakthrough in the food industry.

What I loved about Swee Choon’s Golden Lava Custard Buns is that they aren’t awfully sweet. They don’t inject too much custard into the bun, so your dining experience won’t turn embarrassingly messy.

My first time at swee choon, the price is quite cheap. We are given a seat in the air con area. Don't like the fried mee sua, as it is very oily and filling. The har gao is not bad with whole prawn but skin can be thinner. The chee cheong fun is a bit too salty. The custurd bun is not flowing but it taste good. My favorite is the yang chun noodles eith oil and onion. The sauce is great, I love it so much! Simple yet very nice.

The other item which I like to order have to be the Spicy Bean Paste Chicken ( If I never remember the name wrongly) it is served cold, but it spicy savoury chilli oil sauce which it comes in is super shiok for those to love spicy food. I sometime dump the sauce into my dan dan mian to make it more spicy.

I also like the century egg tofu which is served with a little sweet sauce and chunks of century egg. I wish there could be a little more century egg though. Definitely not enough to satisfy my cravings.
There are loads of really good selections to go for in swee choon and you can just check out the other tables around you to see what they are ordering!
Have fun indulging in swee choon!

It is not your usual dim sum place which normally opening during morning til noon. Swee Choon located at jalan besar consisted of four shop in one row operated during night time from 6pm to 6am. Yes, it's perfect for night life people who want to have supper or dim sum craving. They offer good and affordable dim sum. The famous dim sum are Liu sha bao, fried vermicelli kueh. Obviously I do not have to introduce this popular restaurant which serves dim sum, not in the morning but throughout the night! This time, we decided to try more varieties. It is kinda famous for the mee sua kueh, which is a deep fried rice cake that is wrapped in a salty rice vermicelli but I didn't find it fascinating. Whereas, what's the real awesome bomb is the pan fried tofu with pork floss, its texture is just too silky and melts in your mouth! Do also try their salted egg custard bun, har

Only con of this place, they don't take in reservation and you'll have to wait for at least half an hour usually!

Mixture of typical and contemporary, every of their Dim Sum was classic. BBQ Pork Rice was lean and fragrant, rice was fluffy and not to mushy. Law Mai Kai wise, the taste was seemingly lacked of something and entire was a bit dehydrated. Strong mushroom aroma along, I don’t really fancy. First try of their Red Bean Paste Pancake, skin was fried to golden-yellowish crispy with generous filling wrapped inside. A sweet treat that you can never missed, $4.80 at price and I left it for my dessert. Overall, it gave me rather good impression. Extensive Menu with affordable price, I am going to try their main dishes next round.
