Cranberry juice for $3.90 - a total disappointment, with a dismal taste.

Pasta pesto. While the pasta was al dente, I didn't like it as it felt a little too firm for my liking. Prawns were generous and large though. My friend love it because it was flavourful, but I felt that it was a tad too oily.

Preferred the beef risotto which was flavourful, but I may add that it was a little too salty. The beef slices were delicious as well.

Our mains - Wild Mushroom Ravioli and Pasta Al Pesto Gamberi were absolutely delicious and to our liking! The richness of the ravioli cream sauce and strong flavours from the pesto gamberi was unbelievable. Thumbs up!!

Intending to spring a surprise for my boyfriend, I had initially asked the staff to help me bring over a mini birthday cake that I had bought from Rive Gauche. To my amazement, and great compliments to the service from Covelli, their staff spend the extra effort to decorate the plated cake into one that is so beautiful! And their staff were all very friendly and quick to respond to any of our needs. Thumbs up on their service!!

On the whole, excellent food and service at this particular restaurant! Absolutely love the place - its ambience, food, staff and will definitely return there as one of their regular customers.

A while back, i decided to go for Restaurant Week ( my first time ) at Covelli. Having heard good reviews for this place, i actually had pretty high expectation.Maybe they had to cater to the crowd so most probably all the main course had to be prepared in advance which resulted in luke warm food. Kind of disappointing. For the grilled salmon, the taste is still pretty good despite being cold already. I think the dressing that comes with it may have helped.

My bestie got a Groupon deal so here we are trying out the food. It's my 2nd visit here! Before this i came for Restaurant Week which left me a bit disappointed with my main course. It's a pasta deal so after looking through the menu, i decided to try Mexican Fusion. This time it didn't disappoint me! =) The seafood are fresh and it was a pretty good portion for me. I saw someone else trying out the pizza and it looks good too! It's gonna be on my "next to try" list =)

Crab cake ($16) is a must try. The pan seared crab meat patties is made from generous amount of fresh crab meat, and fried till golden bits to give the crispiness outer layer, and finally served with Mesclun salad and purple tartar sauce.

Barramundi and lobster ($32) is a luxury combination. Two beautiful fresh seafood are being put together. The pan roasted barramundi fillet and charcoal lobster were served with fresh baby spinach in Gewurztraminer cream. The charcoal lobster is something new to me, lovely crispy texture on the outside, though it might not be so appealing but taste wise, thumbs up.

The restaurant is located at a corner of the basement of Ochard Central, right beside the lift. We took the escalator which was at the other side, thus we took some time before finding the place.

The atmosphere inside is relaxing and high-classy. My friend ordered the 'Merluzzo Con Asparagi' for me, which is the cod fish dish he heard was nice. We were first served with plain water as we were not in the mood for their wines. A piece of garlic bread was also served to us. I must rave to you how simply delicious the bread is! The bread was really thin and crispy unlike the usual thick, chewy baguette type. It was baked warm and the garlic seasoning on top has hint of garlic flavour that is so pleasing to taste. I know it is just a complimentary starter, but i just cannot forget the simple yet extraordinary taste!

After the lovely bread, i was really looking forward to my main course. However, it took really long. My partner was halfway through his meal, while the customers behind me were also digging into their meal already. After enquiry, the serve apologetically told me the chef has burnt my fish and i have to wait 15 mins more for them to prepare a new one.

When my dish finally came, i was more than ready to tuck in. I am pleased with it though not impressed. From their description in the menu, i was looking forward to my 'baked chilean cod in pistachio crumble with asparagus, parsnip and pear puree in lemony white onion fondue'. My dish came with a satisfying piece of cod with the skin baked really crispy while the meat was moist and sweet. The cod was served on top of the puree which was mixed with quite a lot of sweet onion pieces in it.

My dish costed about $45 after gst and svc. I am happy that i at least tried it once, but i doubt i will be visiting again.

Globe Artichoke & Eggplant Veloute with Crab Cheese Cremeux and Black Truffle Oil
Surprise tangy taste in a vegetable soup. One of the most unique tasty soup that is paired with uncommon black croutons. Transparent globs of black truffle oil accents the flavors of the vegetables but does not overpower the creaminess.
Slab of crab cream cheese is really salty and crabby ( like eating pureed crab) and thus matches well with the light bowl of soup.

Desserts were the same for both sets
Beetroot & Extra virgin olive oil cake with 60% Chocolate mascarpone
Innovative fusion flavors of vegetables into a dessert. Slightly salty moist cake. Bitter chocolate lumps that are a little harder than a usual mousse.

Did not regret choosing this place. Good quality food (even though that was the first night of Singapore restaurant week) , too-high service quality (with a knowledgeable server constantly standing at a distance from the table but yet able to hear every conversation)
Another wonderful night of taste adventure!

Covelli Supreme Pizza(*^◯^*)
For the price, the size speaks it's value. Bigger than the L size of home delivery pizza and able to feed more than 4. Like the crunchy slightly charred sides and thin crust. But cheese lovers would be disappointed as shredded mozzarella were too little to give the melty effect when u pull out a slice. Lack of effort to flavour tuna chunks results in bland taste even if pizza is topped with an egg.

)

This Italian Bistro is located right at the basement of Orchard Central, at an isolated corner beside the lifts. There is also an open-kitchen separated by a walkway from the main dining area. You can actually see how the chefs prepare your dishes.

The ambience here is really serene, and especially silent.
The bistro plays classical music to promote the tranquil atmosphere for the diners to enjoy the dishes as well. I love the ambience here.

Aragosta la Pasta
$26

Unfortunately, I didn't quite enjoy this dish, albeit a chef's recommendation. In fact, I did not even finish it like how I usually would! Not saying this doesn't taste good, but I guess I am just not a fan of angel hair pasta.

This Angel hair pasta is served with lobster in their homemade tomato sauce, topped with black Tobiko Caviar.

This pasta would be perfect if it happen to be served with linguine or spaghetti. I'm sure there's a reason for the chef to use angel hair, but as the diner myself, I really didn't enjoy the slimy and cluttered spoonful of the angel hair pasta in my mouth. The texture and feeling of it just wasn't sensational. In fact, the tomato sauce was nothing remarkable.

But good thing is the lobster meat was fresh and tender. It was not hard to retrieve the meat out of the shell too.

Aglio olio
$16

Add: Prawn $20
Add: Crabmeat & baby spinach $22

I thought coupling with the additional options would serve as an average-priced spgahetti out there at most restaurants, but my bf doesn't like both prawn and crabmeat, so no to both!

I got to try a bit of this, and I thought the standard is just slightly above average.
It may look spicy here but it was not. There's a hint of black pepper and garlic slices in this dish, prepared with extra virgin olive oil and basil & italian parsley. The chef used linguine for this aglio olio.

The experience at the Covelli Bistro was overall a relaxing and satisfied one. The service provided by the waitresses was swift and polite. I enjoyed myself at this Bistro quietly hidden at a corner at the basement of Orchard Central, hiding away from the bustling crowd.

I would actually say the price here is slightly above average, but no harm coming here once in a life time.

The Risotto Zafron was a cheesy rissoto made with tiger prawns. The flavors were great, the rice was well cooked, the prawns tasted fresh & well cooked. it was cheesy as ever & I really enjoyed it. Overall it was a great dining experience. We paid about 35-40$ for our meal.

When was the last time you set foot in an Italian restaurant – any chance of it recently? I cannot remember mine but quite certain I haven’t had for a good few months. I relished most of the pasta dishes cooked in the kitchen of some fusion restaurant. These days, I cannot stop my counts on the number of new sprung eateries, mostly fusion and almost far from its root of origin. Should we be overjoyed at the trend? Or get upset over the lost authenticity. I don’t know.

Everyone has their inner most to feed – some prefer the traditional cuisines whilst there are those who cannot do without a twist to the original. Whichever group you belong to, a meal is a meal that critically measures the suitability of that moment in time. Do you agree with me that at times, your mood plays a part in deciding your most desired choice, a psyche dish to bring solace.

I accept the culinary creativity of today’s chef – ranging from an independent classic dish or a union between the Japanese & Italian heritage. I applaud at their bold magical stint in the making, their willingness to rediscover things that they have been taught, perhaps during their apprentice days. It is very encouraging to see them breaking away from the norm to please the crowd who is becoming more finicky in today’s world. Though I believe in Italian dishes cooked in its old traditional way, I welcome younger chefs who practice neoclassicism to woo diners with cutting edge menu - Covelli Italian Bistro & Wine Bar, is a pit stop to seek reminisce of true Italian taste (I thought but turned out otherwise) with a contemporary twist.

The restaurant week, a bi-annual event in Singapore (March & October); coax me into dining at Covelli.

Deeply rooted at the basement of Orchard Central, Covelli has cooked for many for the past 1 year. You wouldn’t missed the iconic laddering escalator along the mall’s exterior, very architectural. A direct route access to level 4 and higher level where most restaurants sit. But those who are frightful of heights, please stay away and use the elevator in the mall instead.

I am greeted by a friendly serving staff who led me into the restaurant that comes with an alley, separating the main dining area and a more private meal room joining the bar area. My table sits privately along the stone-featured wall, bathed in mood lighting with a dazzling but modest chandelier above. I rest comfortably on the padded chair, feeling the velvet seat cover on my skin. The male server who attends to my area was alert and ready though I wish having no one staring at me round the clock from a distance. Having said, I still appreciate his presence around me.

He showed me the menu designed for the restaurant week which prior to this, I have seen.

I was smitten by the creamed stock with artichoke and eggplant finishing. The spoonful of crab cheese cream inject a delicate touch. The addition of the black truffle oil perfumed the soup with a bit more fragrant while the croutons gave a crusty bites that awakened the jaw muscle cells.

The tuna carpaccio was far from my expectation yet the lime sorbet excites me greatly. The kamquat oil creates a light acidity which helps to mask the fishy taste in the paper-thin sliced tuna. The meat taste uniquely different from the usual tuna sashimi I had in any reputable Japanese restaurant – if you get my point. The dish has loads of zing in it, if not for the tuna.

With only 2 options in the main, we ordered both for exploration. The pork is braised in root beer until it becomes wobbly. This resulted in a moist and shattered meat. The lean portion is seen clad in between thick jellied fats that allows an almost creamy texture. Excellent eaten in small bites but to wolf down 2 massive slab like that was clearly a challenge – for a lady. The spinach gnocchi (in Pork dish) and calamari ink spatzel (in fish dish) was identical in texture. Both tasted rubbery and sterile. I remember mopping up flavorful gravy of coq au vin with the spaetzel at db Bistro Moderne but not here. The dish didn’t allow me as it was served dry and so, the glutenous morsels remained flavorless except its faint cheesy elements. I guess they exist to fill the empty gastric cavity.

If you insist asking what the Pan-seared Nile Perch resembles, it will be a home-cooked dish which my mum used to whip up every dinner. The deep fried fish was the least unusual to any taste buds. The crackling fish skin helps accentuate joy in eating the seemingly humble dish. I liked the fish for its freshness and appreciate the sea-urchin mango flavoured mousse for that gentle shake on my shoulder.

The Italian feast didn’t rock my palate, but it ended with a sweet note.

Pretty to admire, the plating was attractive. It reminds me of the flourishing spring with a touch of petal embellishments. Purple, yellow, pinkish hues whisper melodically, at one time chorusing and inviting me to join in. The cake – pigmented in gutsy red, was a pure enjoyment. Made using highly nutritious beet, I am more than pleased to take on a few more mouthful. I had expected it to taste earthy and raw, but was impressed by its fabulous end result. I loved the natural flavour from the beet and the extremely moist cake texture it yield. It was quite disturbing at first to learn that the cake was made using olive oil as I didn’t like the idea of tasting sharp olive oil in my dessert. I was surprised that there was no traces of it but a subtle sweetness from the garden beet. Chunks of chocolate mascarpone are making the dessert even more addictive and bits of those dark chocolate shavings were not wasted as well. Everything was packed in harmony and deposited in my almost exploded gastric pocket. Though sinful, I would definitely eat more of it for a youthful look if the claim for anti-aging benefit in the beet is valid.

If my maiden attempt at Covelli didn’t convince my palate, its service team won me over. I am prepared to return for a proper selection from its menu and most critically – it is the Dark Chocolate Lava cake that is waving at me!

Let your taste buds decide if you had an enjoyable Italian meal, at least I had a fine dessert to make it up.

Squid-Ink Meringue is light, airy and sweet. Sea Urchin-Mango Cheese Mousse has nice fragrant of mango. Its a little weird at first bite, however the after taste got better and has very slight taste of squid ink. You should try this modern invention of an traditional dessert. Definitely tantalizing treat to your palate.

Pack nicely in a clear box for the SFF
