You may snap the bone and see a little bit of blood in there, but it’s about the flavour." - Gordon Ramsay
When Gordon Ramsay arrived in Singapore last year, he was set three challenges, one of which was to learn how to cook and sell the iconic Hainanese chicken rice, then win the votes of the crowd deciding the winner. In a tiny kitchen of Maxwell food market, Ramsay caused a frenzy as he arrived and learnt from the tutelage of owner and chef of Tian Tian, an established chicken rice stall.
He lost the challenge.
Winning the crowd with his chilli crab, but losing in laksa and chicken rice - Ramsay was suitably awed as he worked with the three Singaporean chefs at their specialities; undoubtedly left Singapore with a new experience of cooking and a whole new outlook on the reinvention of cuisine.
My review today is on Good Year Hainanese Chicken Rice, a stall in Toa Payoh. A humble store with small beginnings, it has a large fan base and a good reason for this, with television appearances and television personalities frequenting the stall.

My ala carte set costs $4.80. One person portion of roast chicken, big bowl of peanut chicken feet soup (request auntie to give you big size one), one tau kwa and 2 chicken rice ball. Likely i will go for the normal grain rice instead next time. Chilli was normal but the meat itself makes up for it. Drivers tips is to park at loading area and sit where you can see your car
. By the way, this place is pretty near braddel mrt station.

Other the fragrant and flavorful rice, I love the chicken feet peanut soup that compliments the meal.

Especially on weekends, do expect rather long lunch time queue at this place.

A friend recommended this stall. I went to try for lunch. I queued for very long to order. The roasted chicken is fat and juicy. Rice is fragrant and nice. The rice balls are not bad too. A bit sticky but quite big in size. Two balls are just nice. The chilli is a bit sweet and i do not really like. Something different but i think not worth queuing as it is just average taste.

Compared to the usual chicken rice that is more robust, the unique rice ball is soft and mushy, retaining the authentic flavour of chicken stock and the lovely fragrance of pandan leaves. The Price
A set meal for one person, which comes with two rice balls and a plate of chicken, costs only $3.50.

Overall
This is the one and only chicken rice ball in Singapore. If you have not tasted chicken rice balls before, come down and try it for yourself !

I was there at about 1 pm. There was a long queue right in front of this stall. I queued and waited for 30 minutes to be served. I ordered half of the roasted chicken with 4 rice balls and a plate of rice to share with my partner. After order, i waited at the table for them to serve it then paid. I tried the rice balls and compared it to what i had in Melaka. I still prefer to what i have eaten over there. The rice ball here is much bigger in size but less flavourful. I would very much prefer it to come in bite-sized. I then tried the normal rice and actually prefer it to the rice balls. If i do come back, i will be happily to skip the rice balls.

However, the rice balls are still worth the try for experience sake.

The rice is shaped into a large ball and for me, I didn't enjoy it as much as I imagined. I like my rice to be fluffy but because this is shaped into a ball, the rice is mashed and sticks together. The fragrance and taste of the rice is nice but I just preferred my rice to be fluffy and distinct instead of mashed together. As for the chicken, it is very tender and still quite juicy and sweet. It is nice trying it out just for the experience, but I would prefer my normal chicken rice on a plate.

Be prepared to queue if you want to order from this stall. Even though it is around 1:20, there is still a snaking queue. We had to wait around 30mins before we are served. I guess chicken rice balls are really close to extinct in Singapore. I only know of this stall when my mum told me, and this is my first time here.
