i went to lao Beijing for their high tea buffet. the price of their high tea buffet is seriously reasonable. It is the kind of price where you can indulge in their buffet once every weekend and do not really feel the pinch in your pocket. I like the superior soup. you can taste the effort the chef took to boil it. When you soak the dumpling in it, the dumpling taste even more fantastic. Really very satisfying.

There are quite many delicious cold dishes available in their buffet menu. The bamboo shoots are very crunchy and also mixed with really fragrant chilli sauces that make it very appetitizing. The crunchy cold seaweeds are also very taste and filled with the nice fragrant from the generous amount of sesame oil mixed in it. The braised sliced mushrooms are equally delicious and very chewy too.

Nomallly if you have settled down in the restaurant, the service staffs will service you their signature chinese dish and also their popular braised peanuts first while you going through their menu to choose your foods. These braised peanuts are really quite big in size and they are very soft and moist, which really easy to chew. The peanuts are very fragrant and the sauce that used to braise it is not too salty and not too sweet too, just the right taste and fragrant.

I found the dumpling exceptionally tasty even without the sauces it tasted so good. for the drinks, they have this specially brewed herbal tea. After eating all the oily guotie and fried food, it is the ideal drink to cool your body down. The herbal tea does not have this strong herb taste, it is more of sweetish instead. Suitable for those who dun really like those bitter herbal tea.

Feeling hungry, hubby and I decided to order four dishes and a bowl of rice ($1) to share. Warm water here was charged 30c per pax. The Five spice rolls ($6) 五香卷 are quite appetizing. The texture is nice, with a little bit of crunch in between the minced meat, and the seasoning is done just well. The Fried pork and leek ($16) 宝瑞兴的京酱肉丝 is served with a stalk of 'sheets', where you use it to wrap the pork slices and leek. The meat is quite tender, and the sauce is very rich in flavour, sweet too. It's nice to eat on the first few bites, but eventually it turns to be too oily and sweet to me.

Oh..this is the oiliest dish of the night: Eggplant claypot ($12) 鱼香茄子煲. We ended up couldn't finish the dish as it is pretty much coated with an-inch thick of oil layer.

We were at Tiong Bahru Plaza during X'mas. Not keen to have turkey again, we went to this chinese restaurant on level 2, in a corner. A few reputable chinese restaurants used to occupy this space but one by one, they left.

There was a signage indicating the promotion of $19.80 per pax for a set meal. However, the waitress said this is not available since this is X'mas and there is a christmas menu. However, I looked at the "christmas menu" - it was not much different at all but it cost $36 - which was the claimed original price of the set meal before the promotion!

I hesitated only slightly. She got impatient and later came back to say if I want the promotional set meal, it was still available, but warned that it would be a small portion.

We ordered 3 set meals, as there were 3 persons. We were contemplating if we should order more side dishes - esp the Mao zedong's braised meat and Sao Bin but again the waitress sounded impatient, so we didn't order more.

The meals came fast. However, the portions were small indeed. For eg, the vegetable dish is about half of a $6 zi char dish. So wondering if this is for 1 person (and we should get one 1 each), we asked. They got confused. One waitress said, yes, so we should expect two more of the same dish. Later, a more senior waitress came by to say, 3 person's portions were cooked together. Sigh. We made do and eat them.

As for the dishes' taste, I think they were okay. Not fantastic, and probably not representative of the old beijing (shouldn't the food be salty?).

The signature dish - roast peking duck - was quite nice, but it is far below Ming Jiang's Peking Duck. Well, don't expect too much.

The double-boiled nourishing soup was pork rib soup. It was light, but there was plenty of small pieces of pork rib, not bad at all.

On the whole, the food was slightly delightful. Portions are miserable. Service is below par.

It's a rip off. If we had ordered the individual dishes, It's probably cheaper given the portions. Not going back soon.

Total cost: $78.
