I think sometimes Singaporeans take waterfront dining for granted. I know of people who would give anything to have a cuppa by the river. Ninethirty is an idyllic place and it is nice to spend a lazy afternoon here to chill, over a cup of cappucino if you would like. It is a bright and cheerful place, with many windows to take advantage of its location. Convenient place to head to before or after a performance.

On first impression, ingredients looked pretty sparse for a $7.90 bowl of chicken soup with barely a few strands of noodles. But it was definitely flavourful, tinged with the oils from chicken. Server piping hot, it still gets a thumbs up from me as comfort food.

Shoestring fries might do little to bring out the quality of the potato, but the truffle oil and salt that went into the preparation of this finger food favourite definitely adds to its appeal and aroma.  It definitely came close to being "gone in sixty seconds" here.

THE Chocolate Ice Cream

An improvement to Loola's menu at ninethirty was the introduction of their ice cream. I stick to my earlier reviews of Awfully Chocolate's signature Hei 黑 as the chocolate ice cream to beat. Dark, velvety and intense, it was the perfect way to end my meal at ninethirty. 2 scoops are in this case, definitely better than 1.

ninethirty has been very enjoyable. Very much looking forward to my next visit.

An offshoot of the famous Awfully Chocolate chain, Loola's serves up standard brunch items and desserts. I tried the omelette and I found it normal. There is cheese bits scattered at the top. The omelette itself was sufficiently fluffy although the toast could have been warmer and crunchier. The service however was excellent with the servers prompt to refill the drinks. The dessert, some kind of chocolate tart thingy, was fantastic but rather expensive..

looks good, tastes not-so-good is happening alarmingly frequent nowadays – and it’s even sadder when desserts are the object of discussion. when you have chocolate and sugar and butter floating about in a little baked good, it’s depressing when they don’t end up being good. how can that even happen!

these were lackluster – very, very unimpressive. they weren’t too terrible to eat, but most certainly not worth the price nor the wait. it’s a pity, because the cafe itself is lovely – conducive for intimate conversation, spacious enough for comfortable seating.

I wonder if we went in expecting too much, but reality did quickly deflate our hopes – much like their soufflé.

supposedly a green tea pistachio riser of roast ground pistachios, green tea soufflé and a vanilla bean emulsion – this was really just a sweet omelette and lots of air. no matcha flavour, and no discernible pistachio – when we asked, the waiter came back after ‘consulting the chef’ that the flavours were to be subtle. I would argue they were so subtle as to be non-existent.

we hopped on the waiter’s rather enthusiastic recommendation of their loola’s floating island – crusty meringue, loola’s brownie, brandy flambé and a vanilla bean infused sauce. the good thing: enough salt in the brownie to bring out the chocolate and entertainment in brandy on fire; the bad: dry-almost-crumbly brownie encased in a too sweet meringue surrounded by a pool of sweet sauce. I had thought it would be too sweet – and it was.

but at the end of it – the food was just sad. I’m not wiping this place out entirely – I thought it was aesthetically-gorgeous (much like its desserts). it was a calm, serene sit-down place good for post-dinner, and really good for a bit of chat.

If you like fluffy omelettes, then you will like the one at Loola's. A spin-off from the Awfully Chocolate group, Loola's does a mean brunch with quite a wide selection of brunch offerings. We ordered the Souffle omelette. Inside the omelette was red cheddar, sauteed mushroom and parmesan. Excellent combination. The omelette was really very fluffy and light, and totally melted into our mouth. The toast was also good.

This was my nth visit to Loola's and this time, I was there solely for desserts. My friends and I each ordered our own and for me, the decision was a no-brainer. I had Loola's Brownie. The reason why I love this brownie so much is that it's super moist. You wouldn't believe how fudgy it is! The quality is top-notch and the best part is that in between, you will find a layer of salted caramel. Fabulous!

Some fancy photo editing! Tried the Braised pork belly with bubble and squeak and this is fantastic! The pork belly was soft and melts in your mouth goodness. The fat to meat ratio is perfect and paired with the dense bubble and squeak (seems to be some sort of vegetable mash potato but denser texture) is delightful. I would eat more of this. For dessert, we had the pistachio souffle. This isn't for everyone as the pistachio flavour is very strong and for me, it's a little too much.

I ordered the Oxtail Ragout Pasta ($28) which was mainly tagliatelle (a traditional type of pasta), ragout of oxtail and parmesan, while my boyfriend had the Pan Seared Braised Pork Belly ($28) - honey glazed pork belly with lotus root chips (interesting) and bubble & squeak.

The oxtail pasta was super flavourful thanks to the tomato-based sauce with parmesan cheese. It was further enhanced with the tender bits of oxtail, cooked to perfection!

The pork belly was also absolutely fantastic. It was super succulent and it just melted in my mouth. Probably the best pork belly I've ever tasted!

For dessert we ordered the Rich Chocolate Cake ($14). I actually wanted Loola's Brownie (one of the best desserts in the house), but my bf isn't a big fan of brownies. Nevertheless, the cake was pretty darn good! It was super fudge-y on the outside and on the inside. Loved it.

Goes without saying, I'll be back for more the next time, and the next, and the next... you get the picture.

We had Loola's for desserts after dinner. We were served immediately upon arrival and the staff patiently answered our questions when we ask what is the dessert about. We also asked for recommendations which they showed us quite a variety enthusiatically. The menu did not have alot of choices for desserts, especially if you're looking for cakes. They don't have them on menu, but they have it on display. So the best thing is to ask the staff there for recommendations so as to make better choices!

We ordered 2 different desserts, Loola's floating island and Mont Blanc cake.

Loola's floating island is supposed to have a crusty meringue on top of a brownie. Before that, the staff had the meringue set on fire to produce a crusty crust. But I'm not a huge fan of that so it just taste too sweet for my liking. The brownie was good though! Mont Blanc cake came with vanilla ice cream. The cake tasted just like any other normal chocolate cake to me but it was still very nice. Both the desserts left the 4 of us full after that.

The plus point is that the place is not crowded and has good ambience and impeccable service, although the minus point is that the desserts are quite pricey, so it's best to share!

The lotus roots were really crunchy & have a slight salty taste. The Pork Belly was served was honey glazed with a dash of salt at the top and the taste of it was indeed succulent at every bite. I could taste the combination of the fat together with the meat and crisp skin. There were some bits of caramelized apples to compliment the taste of Pork Belly dish. I ordered the Green Tea Pistachio Riser as this was recommended by one of the staff and it was one of their most popular desserts. This was a pistachio green tea soufflé. I always have a soft spot for soufflé and this dessert just won me over. It was baked to perfection as the soufflé amazingly managed to rise up nice and straight. I love the paring of the green tea pistachios with the great flavour of rich chocolate in the layer inside. It was truly divine! Overall, I love the cosy and quiet ambience of the restaurant with huge chairs & small coffee tables. There is a nice panorama window view overlooking the Marina Bay Sands. There is also a choice to be seated outside if one would like. Price was on the higher side but the food is really worth a try.

The red cabbage provided a nice tangy crunch to compliment the duck which can be a tad greasy if eaten by itself. However there were bits of spices in it that made a few bites a tad too bitter. Did not like those apples though as they were way too sour.

My friends had The Spatchcock which serves 2 people. It contains one whole pan roasted chicken served with a medley of vegetables and comes with a serving bowl of sauce/stock. I tried some of it and the chicken was quite good but it wasn't salty enough so you must dip some of the sauce to compliment it. The vegetables were so-so. Quite bland and nothing fantastic.

Then comes the dessert! Since Loola's is owned by Awfully Chocolate, we have high expectations of the desserts and were not disappointed. The Loola's Brownie is highly recommended. The is what they mean by death by chocolate. The chocolate is so moist, luscious and decadent! Chocolate lovers will fawn over this. The top of the brownie is covered with a layer of salted butterscotch which is fantastic! The combination of salty and sweet is really awesome, paired with some cold vanilla ice cream.

Another good dessert is the Banofee Tart. It is basically a tart with caramelized bananas, custard, browned butter and vanilla ice cream. I love the tart base...it tasted like oatmeal cookies. And the banana soaked in some gooey caramel and custard was super shiok!

We decided to have the Lemon Yogurt Cake as it sounded like a lighter dessert compared to the first two, but it was damn big! It was quite lemony and light, but it didn't fare quite as well as the others. I'm not a big fan of citrus desserts anyways.

Overall, it was a good dinner and we enjoyed ourselves especially as it was quite peaceful that night. Recommended to head to Loola's for a bite if you're in the area.

A whole smorgasbord of starters have been added to the menu and items include Spiced Pumpkin Soup ($12) and Roasted Squash Salad ($18), but if you want a little bit of everything – or if you’re just plain indecisive – Loola’s Board ($32) makes a great choice. It’s full of light bites such as Miso Roasted Garlic Cloves, Baked Cherry Tomatoes, Dates with Serrano Ham, Grilled Octopus (goes great with the accompanying pesto sauce), and sinful Bone Marrow to spread on crunchy Garlic Crostini.

The first time I came Loola's, I fell in love with the food. The last time I left, I hated everything about the same.

When the kitchen staff is paying attention, they can literally whip up magic. Capellini and Roe, Pan Seared Braised Pork Belly, Lobster and Sheets (all pictured here), they were some of my favourite dishes of all time.

The first dish when executed perfectly, is like a dance of flavours on your palate. The saltiness roe and the earthy taste of the truffle oil dressing, they glide in step on a bed of cold pasta. When executed poorly, oh la la. The capellini turns up drenched in water and the dressing, hard and clumpy. The Pork Belly, so soft, tender and savoury the first time, was overpoweringly sweet the last. I could almost taste the lack of love from the kitchen. And finally Lobster and Sheets, a great dish so easily destroyed by seafood that's been left out in the open for a little too long.

So no. I'm not coming back to Loola's. And I don't suggest you try it as well.
