A photobook specially dedicated for desserts (called The Dessert Book), the unique sweet treats were styled professionally and I was impressed just by flipping through the pages.

Pumpkin Soup – Served piping hot, this was a real comfort dish. The soup was basically pumpkin puree - sweet, pure and unadulterated. I’ll choose this over Soup Spoon’s anytime.
Mushroom Soup – The mushroom soup contained a generous amount of mushroom bits, very tasty as well!

Black & White, Scallop & Crab [Interwoven squid ink & egg Tagliolini w crabs and scallops in white wine consomme] ($16.90 set meal + additional $2.40) – I wouldn’t eat squid ink pasta by itself so this combination of egg and squid ink pastas was a brilliant idea! I love how the different shapes and thickness of the pastas create different textures and wow, the amount of crabmeat was indeed, very generous. The seafood was definitely packed with lots of punch but I felt that the white wine sauce could have been more flavourful.

I ordered the Lemon Prawn Parppadelle ($13.80++) set meal which comes with the pasta, soup and Iced Lemon Tea. The pasta type is parppadelle, a flatter thicker sort of pasta which doesn't have much springy bite to speak of. Taste-wise it could be a little more intense in all areas - could be more salty and tangy. The prawns are still a little limpid and small, but generally still acceptable. They also peeled the prawns, luckily. I enjoyed the cherry tomatoes which were powerfully packed with sweetness and juiciness!

Just looking at the menu made me so excited already, the number of choices available were mind-blowing! and with their concept of Autumn/Winter and Spring/Summer menus, this means even more choices for us diners! ;) and it also means better quality of food since only the best seasonal items are used.

let's start with the drinks! i ate so much food that day i hope i can remember everything
hahaha. i'll try my best alright. anyway, these drinks were really interesting! they're mixologist inspired drink creations and the two main types to choose from are the beer cocktails and non-alcoholic drinks. as you probably know, i don't like beer. i've attempted to try all kinds of fruit beer and i still hate the taste of the beer. but the ones at Platypus kitchen sound so interesting! beer that has REAL fruits inside and not just the syrup just made it kinda tempting, and when Nicholas (the boss) assured me that the taste of the beer was minimal, i gave in and decided to give it a shot. and boy, i was so impressed!!! i ordered the momo lychee ale ($9.90) which is Sol beer flavoured with fresh peach and lychee nectar, garnished with mint sprigs and fresh lychees. just the description was enough to make me drool. and how often do you find drinks with real fruits in it! that's what makes Platypus Kitchen special because they strive to make not only their food, but drinks included, as authentic and natural as possible. this was such a refreshing drink and i could hardly taste the beer at all because of the natural sweetness of the fruit in it

I tried the roasted pumpkin soup ($3.90). the pumpkin and carrots were pureed to the perfect texture with just the right amount of sweetness, and it was so deliciously tasty! i adored it. and even though there were so many other dishes to come, i kept my pumpkin soup with me right to the end of the meal, so that i could sip on it once in awhile ^^

i was so excited for the pastas which Platypus Kitchen is famous for ^^ i just had to try the spicy 'diabolo' crab & prawn ($18.50) which had the 'love it' sign on the menu, and it didnt disappoint!
from it's artsy appearance with the little nest atop (i was fascinated to find out it's actually shredded chili that has been fried to a crisp! try it on it's own and you can taste the little tinge of spiciness and it goes beautifully with your pasta when you mix it in), to the aroma the moment the dish lands on your table, to the harmonious combination of flavours exploding in your mouth, this dish was simply wonderful. it's also really interesting how the pastas here have a touch of Asian flavour!

Ala carte : Clams & Clams @ S$7.50 . Venus clams steam-cooked in garlic butter and white wine. The garlic butter taste was strong but didn’t get to taste much of the white wine. But the clams taste delicious as the presentation though.

The promotion set of S$16.90++ comes with 2 choice of soups – Pumpkin soup and mushroom soup. We tried both of them and my friend said the pumpkin soup is very rich and flavorful and the mushroom soup was rich as well.

Dinner ended perfectly well with Sea Salt Caramel dessert @S$6.90. I am missing the ‘pop pop’ sea salt that goes into my mouth. Totally cheer up my day with stressful work.

Total bill inclusive of 10% service charge and 7%GST was S$61.80 for 2 persons.

I ordered peppermint mojito tea for my drink while my friend ordered peach tea. First of all the mushroom risotto tasted not too bad initially but as I continued eating I find the taste too overwhelming and over-filling. Worst of all, my peppermint mojito tea was awful too!
It really affected my eating experience. The only thing I managed to finish was the mushroom soup
My friend said her carbonara was okay only too! Not sure if it's because I have ordered the wrong food from the menu but I doubt I will come here again for their food!

Add tabasco sauce and it spiced up a bit =)

It was rather quiet on a weekday so it be great for a nice quiet dinner! Food and service is not bad so i don't mind coming back but i may try another branch.

Crab Cakes
They are stuffed with generous chunks of crab claw meat! You can taste the authentic crab meat with every bite. They definitely did not scrimp on the crab meat!

Saffron & Caviar Risotto
Look at that generous spoonful of caviar toppings resting nicely on top of the risotto. The saltiness of the caviar goes well with the risotto. Risotto is moist, not too wet, not too dry. I super love the scallops here too!

Squid-Ink Scallop Ragout
Usually the reason that is stopping people from ordering squid-ink pasta is because they are afraid that the black squid ink will stain their teeth. Fret not!! This squid-ink pasta is made in a way to ensure that the squid ink does not stay to the teeth. The squid ink is rolled onto the dough itself! One of my favourites!

Carbonara
Despite the bacon being soaked into the sauce, it was not soggy and soft. The egg-yolk cream sauce (I hate egg-yolks but the taste of the egg-yolk is very subtle here) is rich yet no overwhelming. It is a good carbonara pasta!

Spicy Diablo Crab & Prawn
My favourite too! Look at the towering portion of crab claw meat. They are indeed generous with the portion and you only pay $18.50 for this dish of goodness! I feel that this dish will suit the Singaporean taste bud as it tasted kinda asian to me.

Pressed Pork Belly
the sauce was poured on the spot when this dish is served. So if you want to add in the sauce according to your own preference, you can let the server know. The next time you eat pork belly, think about it as being loaded with collagen so you won't feel as guilty
As mentioned before, I am not a fan of pork belly but this is really good. The meat is tender and absorbs the sauce well.

Iced Sea Salt Caramel
Popping candy is placed on top of that slice of perfection. It is so fun to eat because with every bite, you can literally hear the popping candy popping inside your mouth! If you have a sweet tooth, you must try this! I love desserts but I cannot stand desserts that are too sweet. Thankfully, as sweet as this dessert may look, it is not overly sweet, just to my liking

Truffle Fries ($6.90).

But despite my lack of interest in them, my friends were always raving about their one of a kind pastas. The variety that you don’t find even in most Italian restaurants. So when I got news about of their grand opening at Bugis Junction, I knew it was a good opportunity to wrestle a partner and try their pastas for myself.

A quick glance at their menu and I have to say it’s pretty extensive. From your greens and side dishes for sharing down to their pastas and risottos, everything seem tempting to have especially when there’s visual cues to infer upon.

Since it was only for two, I decided to start off our dinner with something simple. Something douse in white truffle oil and topped with generous shavings of truffle. And that’s how I love their rendition of the French classics.

Setting aside truffles, another one of my favourite ingredients is prosciuttos or Parma ham. Happiness was when I saw Prosciutto & Truffles ($18.50). A dish of homemade well sauteed garlic-cream pastas garnished with thinly sliced Italian ham and truffles.

As good as it was, my partner and I found the pasta dish to be overpowering. Would be better if the taste was more balanced.

If you aren’t a fan of flour, you might considering opting for their mains which I thought was equally good. Take for instant, their crispy and melt in the mouth Press Pork Belly ($19.90) then drizzled in a generous serving of braised apples, garden vegetables and a honey & clove apple glaze. A wonderful complement I must say.

True to their Mediterranean cuisine, everything is fresh and of a certain quality. So if you’re in the mood for fresh homemade pasta under $20, Platypus Kitchen is one choice to consider!

It tastes quite light and tangy with quite juicy peeled prawns.

One thing which I do not really like about the service here is that the mains are served before we are halfway done with our salads and soups. It makes the table very packed. I think the staff should have cleared the sides before serving the mains.

Passed by this place and the menu was very impressive (loads of pasta and risotto choices) so decided to stop by for lunch. I ordered the Truffle Carbonara Tagliatelle and the dish was a huge mountain of pasta, creamy sauce, bits of crispy bacon and chives. I think it's not bad although it is a tad dry, could use a bit more sauce. Quite a heavy dish due to all the cream and egg (the taste of egg seems particularly heavy) so if you want room for dessert, order to share.

At first glance, the portion of the pasta with fillings such as mushrooms were generous and the tempting smell whet my appetite. The pasta was very rich and creamy and cook to perfection.

To end the dinner i ordered the signature dessert called popping cheesecake. This is the probably the first time i ate such an interesting cake that left every bite with popping action.

Would recommend pasta lovers to try this place out. Spend about $30++ per person.

The interior is really big, but its a huge pity they are terribly understaffed. The staff also took ages to take our order, serve them, refill our water glasses and generally attend to any orders. I wouldn't blame them, they had to serve this entire space with only 3-4 staff, including the service staff behind the counter... dreadful.

I ordered a Sundried Pesto Chicken pasta, which was honestly quite good comparing to the other pasta dishes I tried. My set cost $16.90, with no additional addons. The pasta, in my opinion, was a bit too salty, but other than that, it was really full of flavour. I could taste the sundried tomatoes, and the chicken was cooked til it was tender. One of the better pastas of the lot, we recommend you choose this! (Unless you like truffles, because then you'd want to try their truffle tagiatelle and their other pastas with truffle)

(sorry for the blur picture). This is the Angry Chicken -amused at the name, my friend ordered this hoping to be pleasantly surprised. When it was served though, the pasta had grown all sticky and clumped together in a starchy mass. The chicken was spicy (I guess that's why it's called Angry? haha) and other than the general saltiness, there wasn't much to speak about this dish.

The wild mushroom risotto had a grain that tasted more like chinese rice than anything. Unlike most risottos, the texture of this one seemed more like gluey porridge. The grain hadn't really 'come together' to form a mushy risotto, the grain can still be separated from the gluey sauce it was in that held the grains together. Other than the texture, the risotto had a nice flavour -very, very strong on mushrooms. I was glad they didnt use truffle oil in this -it would have been too strong. That's how aromatic the mushrooms were.

The side salad -assorted greens in a presumably Italian dressing. We suspected that the oil to balsamic vinegar ratio had been reversed because it seemed to have more oil than flavour, which didn't seem quite right. The vegetables, as a result, just tasted raw and oily. No real flavour except for the bitter leaves.

Also trying their squid ink pasta ($17.80), I was honestly a bit surprised. The pasta wasn't cooked in squid ink -instead, the ink had been incorporated into the pasta ITSELF. The pasta was tossed, aglio olio style, with something I couldn't quite put my finger on. It had a slightly earthy flavour that was strangely sour/tangy(?). A bit odd because we were used to squid ink sauces. I suppose the tangy flavour was appetising, but my friend didn't really like it. To her, it felt more like a pasta salad.

The mushroom soup was lumpy and worse, lukewarm. Way too salty -you're better off having the salad!

Waiting time was ridiculously long though, the mains took up to 1 hour to 1.5 hours to be served. The sides took on the average 30-40minutes. The adjacent tables also went uncleared for a good 45minutes before the staff hurriedly came over and brought in the glasses that had been left sitting.

Try platypus kitchen only if you're in a pair, or a maximum of 3-4 pax! The service is much, much faster. Although we were slightly disappointed by the quality of the pasta (especially after hearing so much about this place), it could have been because they were severely shorthanded, and they had to churn out 10 plates of pasta to be served at one shot. (Oh yes, they serve the orders for the table all at one go so no one has to wait for others' dishes to arrive before digging in!!
)

We recommend the Sundried Pesto Chicken, and if you aren't very picky with your risotto, the Wild Mushroom Risotto is decent. If you're completely picky with textures and preparation techniques, don't bother with their "dry" tossed pastas without sauces, and steer clear of the risotto -I wouldn't exactly call it the most authentic of the lot. If you like your food salty, you'll probably enjoy the dishes much more than I did

Price wise, it's a good deal, but that depends on your experience here.

Located outside Food Junction (Mitju exit), it's hidden behind the bends that you might miss easily if you're not on the lookout for it. Being the new kid on the block, we were pleasantly surprised to have sighted a soft launch promotion they were having, with menu prices starting from $16.90 for a set of pasta, drink and soup of the day.

Crab & Tobiko Bucatini ($17.50)
(Bucatini tossed in flying fish roe sauce, toppped with crab claw meat, tobiko and seaweed)

This was one that drew me back for a second visit. It probably didn't look as appetising as it sounds, but I'd thoroughly enjoyed this subtle dish with a combination of my favourite stuffs. The crab claw meat was solid enough with a slight bounce to it, and there was quite a generous amount of crab meat chunks, living up to what it's listed as crab claw meat, the fleshiest parts I've always enjoyed in crabs. Mixed together, it was a nice combination with a slight creamy sauce that was light enough to make it flavourful yet not jelat. Bonus point, every mouthful was marked with the crunchy tobiko to give that extra oomph! It was certainly on my hit list!

Pumpkin Soup
Another entree that came with the set, this came as a pleasant surprise to us! Hardly expecting any good pumpkin soup coming from a pasta specialty place, I was quite marvelled by how good it was actually. It was rich with the natural pumpkin sweetness spread throughout, and a tinge of stir-fried garlic fragrance. Best drank when hot though! When we tried it after it's cooled down, the garlic taste became much stronger and overwhelmed the entire soup. It would have been perfect with a richer taste, but well, it was still quite a good rendition and we were contented with this!

Spicy 'Diablo' Crab & Prawn ($19.90 under premium set)
(Egg Tagliolini with prawns and crab claw meat tossed in a spicy egg sauce)

When they say spicy, they really mean spicy. Overwhelmed by the spicy egg sauce, I felt that this gave too much of a one-dimensional taste. The spiciness was overpowering that it basically numbed my tastebuds and you can't really taste much of the natural sweetness of seafood in the dish. Quite a pity I thought, given that the crab claw meat (super generous again) and prawns were pretty fresh. I didn't exactly like the type of prawn used, as it was the extra crunchy kind that didn't have the usual sweetness, but the textures went well with the dish. It would have been better if they'd offered a selection of the spiciness level as it came to me as a shock after my first mouthful. Definitely not for the faint-hearted!

Truffle Whipped Potato

After my epic-ly great encounter with truffle mash at Bistro Du Vin, I haven't been able to find another one that was able to match up closely to it. When served, I was pleased by the presentation of it, and even more so when I caught the first whiff of truffle when the lid was lifted. The fragrance of truffle was so strong that we got really excited and I felt a sense of satisfaction (you know the kind where you had good food and feel contented) sweeping past me. It had won quite a bit of brownie points with me already even before tasting.

Taking a bite into it, I must say I was fairly disappointed by the lack of truffle taste. Setting high expectations from the smell alone, the taste hadn't been able to match up to it. It was moderately tinted with truffle and the mash wasn't very finely blended to give a smooth texture. It wasn't very warm when served as well and we had to get their friendly service crew to help us warm it up. Great for satisfying temporary cravings but definitely more room for improvement for its taste. Commendable attempt though, I'd enjoyed my first minute of the dish thoroughly with its strong fragrance.

Iced Sea Salt Caramel ($6.90)
(Sea salt and caramel butter cream, chocolate peanut butter brittle, ganache and popping candy)

What's there to resist with sea salt caramel in the dish? This seemed like a signature to order, and it was especially interesting to see desserts coming together with popping candy. It was quite a delightful treat, with a light tinge of sea salt caramel flavour coming through in every mouthful, yet not overwhelmed by the chocolate peanut butter. With a smooth layer of caramel cream that wasn't too sweet and the peanut butter bits, the textures were very well complemented, with the bonus of popping candy to give that additional oomph! It was definitely a hit for me!

Iced Cheese Tart ($6.90)
(New York style cheese cake served with strawberry coulis crumbled biscotti and popping candy)

Finely presented with the crumbles and popping candy, it looked really appetising for us. Thick and smooth New York cheesecake, it was nicely complemented with the slightly sourish strawberry sauce. It wasn't too sweet either and cheesecake lovers would probably enjoy this. It was slightly too heavy for my liking but my friend enjoyed it with its rich flavour. Quite a good one too!

Some hits and some misses for the dishes, but I think it's quite a good place to visit for interesting variations of pasta dishes. It'd definitely left me spoilt for choices with its standard menu and seasonal ones (Crab and Tobiko Bucatini was one of the seasonal pastas). The pasta were all done well, al dente needless to say, and the types of pasta they chose complemented the various combinations they had. I was pretty satisfied with my two visits there and would probably go back for more, especially since it's so conveniently located within Bugis. Great ambience for catching up, gatherings and their service is really good too!

The cake comprises of many layers which i know takes a lot of time and effort for the chef to accomplish it. The layers of chocolate ganache, seasalt caramel cream, nuts and sponge compliment each other perfectly. It was served with hot chocolate fudge and peanuts bits. The most special thing about it is the popping candy they sprinkled on top of the cake. The candy was 'jumping' non-stop when i place them in my mouth. It was a real fun experience though too much of it gets rather irritating.

I truly love this dessert and recommend everyone to try it at least once!
