We were kind of in a rush that day as we had to hurry back to school for lessons. Although Saveur adopts the kind of fine dining menu concept which is not supposed to be very extensive, some younger people may tend to want more options so one of my friend didn't want to have anything as main.

Therefore we decided to get their <b style="line-height: 1.6;">Saveur's Pasta ($4.90) to share among ourselves. This appetizer is a signature at Saveur. The finely seasoned angel hair pasta were lightly tossed in chili oil then perfectly twirled in a memorable way which were then topped with nicely chopped Japanese konbu (seaweed) and tiny sakura ebi (cherry shrimp), the pasta were complimented with some minced pork sauce for hint of flavours. A definite must try!

Just recently my friend came up with a bucket list of restaurants she would like to patronise and we have been crossing names off that list. (Talk about a sense of achievement)

One of our recent stopovers was at Saveur's, well-known for its affordable French cuisine. When i opened the menu, i was expecting to see a wider selection of items like pasta and the likes but i guess this is not a Italian restaurant
.  Unfortunately there was only a few appetizers, main course and desserts. I ended up getting the Savuer's pasta which falls under the appetizers category (sadly).

Still i think it was quite well done. I like that the pasta is practically bursting with flavour and cooked just right. Not too dry nor wet.

I am seeing some awesome desserts from food reviews made by other Openricers so i will be popping by that restaurant again soon to try their desserts!

Price of the main course range around $14.90 which is pretty affordable compared to other French restaurants. Definitely worth a visit if you love French cuisine!

This is the first time I checked out the saveur at Far East Plaza. The furnishing and decoration is prettier and classier than the one at Purvis Street. I ordered Pan-seared sea bass for my dinner. It was pretty decent, nice soft and tender, only thing was the skin was a bit salty. The saute potato that went along with the sea bass was served with crabmeat and it tasted lovely. Pretty good for $14.90 I must say.

Skipping the classics like their duck confit and pasta, we decided to go for the foie gras with apple and vanilla. This was actually a bit gamey, and the portion was minute. It did have the characteristic smoothness of foie gras, and went well with the accompaniments.

The main dish was the pork belly with lentils and sous vide egg. The pork was well-flavoured, and the meat was really juicy. The only gripe was that the crackling wasn't crispy, but instead rather chewy and tough to cut. The egg and creamy lentils went well with the pork, and I enjoyed this rather innovative pairing.

Service was slow, and we were initially served the wrong main course. The table next to us, trying to get their bill, complained as a group of 4 or so waitresses gathered behind the counter to take photos, completely unaware of the diners.

Saveur tries to be very pretentious with their food, and quality is very far from what you get at top restaurants. However, neither can you compare them to expensive places. It continues to do well for food in that price range.

With their no reservation policy, the waiting time before one gets a table has been at least half an hour and even up to an hour during peak hours. The full house which is bustling every single night speaks volumes about their popularity and appeal to the masses.

This year, to meet the high demand for Saveur's recipe of quality French fare at inexpensive prices, owners Joshua Khoo and Dylan Ong opened a second branch right in the heart of town, at level 1 of Far East Plaza. I personally never got down to the Purvis outlet as the queues have been a large deterring factor so I was extremely psyched to hear about a second outlet opening.

Moving onto the food itself...

Saveur's Pasta $4.90

This highly raved about appetizer, also a Saveur signature, won me over instantly with its elegant presentation and how every single strand of pasta was twirled neatly in its characteristic roll. The key to thoroughly enjoying this exquisite dish is to first 'untangle' the pasta before mixing it all up so that every part is covered with the concoction of chilli oil, minced pork sauce and finely-chopped sakura ebi. An extremely refreshing and oriental take on regular pasta and this was sure memorable.

Duck Leg Confit $10.90

My choice of main was a slightly flattened duck leg confit sitting on a bed of homemade potato mash and sauteed shitake mushrooms on the side. A superbly crisp browned skin with succulent salty meat which was also fork tender and delectably delicious. Mmmmm.. I am getting hungry just thinking about it right now! And for just $10.90, this was an absolute steal and a must try! The mashed potatoes too were creamy and smooth, complimenting the French classic perfectly.

Pistachio Panna Cotta $6.90

My first time trying a Pistachio-flavoured panna cotta and I loved that distinct green colour and nutty flavour. Topped with ground and caramelised pistachio nuts, I had a great time spooning through the glass and enjoying the lush and creamy textures of this cooked cream dessert that did not have a overly sweet note. And even my sister who does not have a sweet tooth, finished every last bit of it.

Chocolate and Hazelnut $7.90

And being the chocoholic I am, I had to order the Chocolate and Hazelnut which reminded me of Nutella and Kinder Bueno with its description. True enough, the silken smooth chocolate mousse brought me back to memories of eating straight out of a Nutella jar but even better. With the crunch of crushed hazelnuts, sourness of the broken raspberries and crackling of roasted rice puffs, this delightful chocolate dessert was a colourful medley for the eyes and in the mouth. I would order this again in a heartbeat.

Overall, I had an extremely enjoyable time at Saveur and thankfully I did not even have to queue to get in! And while the restaurant does get crowded during lunch time, there isnt much of a waiting time for patrons. Service too is quick, with the food served efficiently and fast. I will definitely be back for more pocket-friendly French fare at Saveur soon to try more items on their menu!

This is the first time I tried a lot of dishes in a restaurant and love probably every single one!
The dishes do not disappoint and the prices are affordable!
Where can you find affordable and tasty French cuisine food you tell me!
Cheaper than your average Swensen's or Pastamania for mains!

The cream was so so so smooth and rich, better than Paris Baguette's Royal Pudding definitely!

Bill came up to around SGD57 for 2 which I felt was rather decent since we ordered quite a lot! I am DEFINITELY going back again to try the other dishes, probably the seabass and salmon confit!

The inside of the restaurant is dimely lighted, emitting a cozy, slightly romantic ambiance if not for the noisy crowd due to the tables being really close to each other. Service is okay but not fantastic as the staffs rushed around trying to get to all the orders.

Saveur's Pasta ($4.90)

You can easily tell that this is a must-have at the restaurant from how almost every table orders one.

The Saveur's Pasta definitely exceeded expectations for me. At about half portion of a normal plate of pasta, the Saveur's Pasta is meant more as an appetizer than your main course. The pasta is well cooked at perfect texture with the sakura ebi adding a hint of saltiness and crispiness. Highly recommended!

Duck Confit ($10.90)

Duck Confit for me was okay. The mash potato is super soft and creamy, however the duck was a tad dry. Portion is a little too small for me.. Guess it's okay for the price.

Sea Bass ($14.90)

The Pan-seared Sea Bass is another thumbs up dish for me as well! The fish is super tender and juicy, and the saute potato tasted delicious too with some crabmeat for a salty touch. So yummy! The only disappointment is just that the portion is once again too small.

Overall, I feel that the portions for the main courses are really small, but the pasta appetizer do makes up for it thus at least we were not left feeling still hungry after the meal.

A good place to try french cuisine at affordable prices but not a place to chill and hang out as I noticed the waitresses asking some of the chatting diners to leave (politely of course) after they have finished their meal.

Have you ever had one of those nights where you just wanted to have a simple and good dinner without burning a hole in your wallet? Nothing fanciful nor a meal to impress the lady but just a calories-worthy satisfactory meal. Then again, it does not seem quite that easy to churn out a list of such restaurants at the back of my head without having to do some Googling work.

Strolling along Scotts Road, it suddenly occurred to me that we had not try the secondary outlet of Saveur that is located at Far East Plaza! It is one of those names that I associate French dining with affordable pricing and that seemed like a rarity in any developed world's context, not to mention Singapore.

Walking up to the entrance, we were told that the wait would be around 15-20 minutes and lugging a full size cake around, we were not quite keen to hunt around for another eatery and settled for the wait with a seat at one of the stone benches outside. Our names and contact number was taken and the wait began...

'Ring ring, ring ring!', my phone finally rang after some 15-20 minutes and a table was ready! Right... it was not all that dramatic but moving on, we gingerly walked down some narrow steps to a basement flooring decorated with wooden furnishings and mirror panels. I requested for the server to store our cake in the fridge and they were more than willing to do so. There was also a partially open-kitchen concept at the end of the restaurant where you could catch a glimpse of the culinary action going on.

Quite frankly, the seating arrangement was not perfect. Expect to sit really close to your neighbours and if you are nosey enough, perhaps eavesdrop on them gossiping about their colleagues. While it might not fit the setting for the 'Exclusive French Dining' experience, you are equally not paying the kind of prices at an atas French restaurant.

With the setting introduced, let us share with you our table of food!

Flipping through the pages of the menu, this appetizer certainly caught my attention with it categorized under the 'Specials' offering. Tossed in herb soil, drizzled with mango salsa, citrus cream and mango vinaigrette, the King Tiger prawns were uniformly sliced at a titled angle taking particular care to cover each bite-size portion with the finely diced herbs.

The presentation was beautiful and certainly draw diners' attention, with our neighbours across throwing some salivating glances before asking for the name of the dish. What I particularly enjoyed about this simple appetizer was the complementation in textures with the soft cherry tomato, crunchy prawns and paper-thin bread toasts that cut through sharply with a crisp.

On the flavours, we were highly drawn as we personally have a preference for zesty flavours yet not overdoing with the levels of acidity. While the overall taste was a inclined towards a pleasantly sourish aftertaste, the balance was struck well with just the right amounts of sweetness in the citrus cream and mango vinaigrette.

To top it off, you could add a glass of Rose wine (Rutherford Round Hill White Zinfandel) at an additional S$10 with every order of this appetizer.

This is one of Saveur's signature dishes and served as a starter. It was simple pasta tossed with chilli oil, fine-chopped Japanese konbu and sakura ebi with minced pork sauce. One of the most enjoyable elements was non-other than the layer of texture created with the crispy sakura ebi (cherry shrimp). The pasta was cooked al dente and sprinkled with finely diced spring onions for that extra punch of fragrance.

The portion of the minced pork sauce could surely be improved upon to give a stronger contribution to the overall flavours to enhance the offering to one's palate.

Served alongside homemade mashed potato, sauteed Shitake mushroom, orange segments and orange infused natural jus, this main was one of the signatures and must-try. Quite simply, just look around the restaurant and you would find that most of the diners at the tables would have this as a staple at Saveur.

We enjoyed the crispy skin coating the tender red meat on the inside. It was cooked just nice which allowed the flesh on the inside to retain moisture. While the portion size was not the most generous, you definitely would get your buck's worth.

The homemade mashed potato was creamy, refined in texture and really smooth. While the mash and the protein was a more savoury touch, it was beautifully spiced with the tang from the elements of orange introduced which added a hint of sweetness to complement.

The Shitake mushrooms were also cooked perfectly, retaining the firmness within. Overall, the dish would be proud enough to be the restaurant's signature.

A Roulade of Chicken Thigh staffed with Foie Gras-infused Chicken Farce (S$9.90/++)

The roulade comprised of wrapped chicken thigh filled with foie-gras infused chicken stuffing which was then sliced uniformly and spread across creamy basmati rice and parmesan sauce. This would appeal strongly to those with a preference for creamy and cheesy food. The creamy basmati rice had a taste resembling that of risotto in terms of texture and was cooked with a slight hardness remaining in the rice.

Personally, I found it could be a bit satiating on the appetite due to the cheese and cream but my lady enjoyed it a lot more than me. The stuffing and protein was well-cooked in general, remaining moist and tender.

Expect to be overwhelmed with lots of flavours with this dessert. From presentation to taste, there was a lot going on in each spoonful that goes into my mouth. With a blood orange jelly with orange granite, freeze-dried pineapple, feuilletine, citrus segments and lime zest, this is a must-order for those with a citrus-zesty palate.

The blood orange jelly complemented the melt-in-your-mouth freeze-dried pineapple and feuilletine gave that crisp flake like texture to make the different ingredients harmoniously synchronized. On the whole, while the flavours were citrus and on the sourish end, the natural sweetness from the orange made it very refreshing and tantalizing indeed. It might however be too intense for those with a milder palate.

As you can see from the pictures, space between the tables may not be as comforting and while there are no tall and suave French men nor classy ladies to bring you glasses of red wine, the waiting staffs were polite, friendly and we had no problems trying to capture their attention at any point in time.

Plain refillable ice water is available for free and overall, the quality of food was good and above average. The chefs had put a conscious effort in terms of plating and pairing of ingredients to make each dish presentable and calories-worthy. I would however barely recommend this to be the dating spot to bring your other half if you are after a romantic French dinner for it could get quite boisterous though not to an extreme effect.

Their signature pasta, Saveur's pasta, was a true delight.
For $4.90, it was a dish not to be missed.
I love how flavourful it was, almost like an aglio olio minus the garlic.
There was a generous serving of sakura ebi, but I didnt see much minced pork.
Shared this with my friend, and I was longing for more.

The next must order is the Foie Gras with lentils.
I was initially against ordering this dish since the last time I had Foie Gras, it was horrible.
What I imagined was thick, disgusting liver...ewww.
Thankfully my friend chose this, and I was able to try it.
It was sooo good.
I felt the Foie Gras just melt into my mouth once I bite it.
Love the lentil infused sauce all over the foie gras

My friend got the Duck Confit which was supposedly their bestseller.
I liked the creamy mash potato and the mushrooms, but I thought that the duck leg meat was a little too tough for me.
After having my Bebek Garing in Bali and Batam, I felt that the taste of duck should be best left at that, LOL.
That was why I didn't order the duck confit over here.

I got myself the Pan Seared Sea Bass.
Didn't like the texture of the sea bass, and I thought the meat wasn't juicy.
My friend felt that it tasted fresh though.
The only plus points of this dish for me, was the potatoes.
And, who can forget the dish presentation!

Plus points for the Pistachio Panna Cotta!
I thought it was green tea at first haha!
Topped with ground and caramelised pistachio nuts, it was good and creamy.
However, I'm the kind who can't take too much milky and creamy stuff, so I only took 2 mouths before the rest were wiped by my friend.
I think this can be listed as a must order too!

Lastly, I had the Textures of Citrus.
I wanted a refreshing dessert because of the fried and oily dishes I had, plus my throat was itching.
When it came, the people sitting near me went "WOW".
Awesome presentation, yet again.
This was indeed refreshing, although the acidic and sour taste became a little too strong for my stomach.
This dessert consists of orange Ice shavings and grapefruit jelly, topped with the salty crushed cornflakes and meringue bits.
You could taste sweet, sour and a touch of citrus bitterness.
Kinda love it!

Newly opened in Far East Plaza, the shop is located at the perimeter of the mall and pretty easy to spot. I had the signature pasta ($4.90), which is pretty good for its price as a starter. It comes onto the table, beautifully presented. The shrimp and seaweed goes great with the angel hair pasta, and this starter is slightly filling so i would recommend sharing with a friend. Duck confit was supposed to be one of their best selling item, but the taste was disappointing. The meat is tough and salty, and does not come off from the bone easily. I am not a fan of mashed potato, but the staff insist that it is their policy and no changing is allowed. Their mashed potato, like what i am dreading, is very buttery and creamy. I had wanted dessert, but was too sick from the creaminess to order any more food.

Due to its overwhelming responses, Saveur practises strict dining policy and did not accept any reservations. For group dinings (even for just 2 of us), the server will ensure that all members of the group have arrived before issuing them a seat. In order not disappoint customers, they can leave their contact numbers and name down so that servers can follow up with them once queues are cleared. Whilst queuing, each of us is given a menu to read through.

We was directed to a table next to the big chiller that stores juices and wines where lights from the chiller had brightened up our dining place.

Being a french cuisine, it was known for its petite serving with sophistication - Food is elegant and with strong emphasis on its presentation. And our expectations had been bench-marked.

Our palates were tantalized by Saveur's Signature Pasta which was tossed in chilli oil, served with finely chopped Japanese konbu (seaweed) and Sakura Ebi (prawn/shrimp) with minced pork sauce. Presentation was impressive with its pasta rolled up and served on a dish like a cocoon. If you asked me about the taste, in layman terms, I would say it tasted close to "indomee" (brand of instant noodle) if you have tried before. Nevertheless, I enjoyed this starter!

Soup of the Day was Cream of cauliflower. Served on a big plate with the center portion filled with approximately 10 spoonful of soup garnished with herbs and bacon.

How can one miss out the part and parcels of a french dish, the Foie Gras? The bite size pan-seared duck liver was served with lentils & pickled pearl onion. Although it might look abit unappetizing but it was real good enough for its flavours were all well burst within my mouth.

The menu offers 2 types of Foie Gras as its starter, the other comes with apple-infused port wine and vanilla beans and costs slightly expensive.

Succulent duck leg confit with its crispy skin perched on Savuer's homemade mashed potato accompanied by chopped sauteed shitake mushroom and orange segments. Duck was tendered and portion was good enough for me.

I was rather astonished to realize that this was the main course as the size of the plate was ideally my side dish.
Chicken Roulade was impressive though, with thigh stuffed with foie gras-infused chicken farce, creamy basmati rice & parmesan sauce. The latter had packed the dish with additional cheesy fragrance.

The dessert, Pistachio Panna Cotta , gave a riots of texture. Just before we enjoy the wobbly, creamy and smooth panna cotta, we will have to first enjoy the nutty crunchy bites of pistachio. It was not too sweet and most importantly not cloying at all!

Service was better than average. Given a few staff (excluding the chefs) to run the show in a full house during rush hours was seen more than efficient. Glasses of drinks were topped up from time to time with our tables dishes cleared and food were all served one after another on time in such sequence, Starters, Main then Desserts.

Total inclusive of GST and Service charge is $55.75. There were many players in the market for french cuisine and thus far, I find that Saveur has offered the most value for money meal. If you want to enjoy French Cuisine at a budget, she could just fit the bill.

Salmon Confit and Duck Confit. My colleague ordered the Salmon Confit as her "main course", the portion is small and it should be a starter but she is a small eater so I thinks this is enough for her. The salmon is really soft and fresh. It's seem be cooked but the taste a bit like japanese salmon sashimi. Anyway, this is a must try. we had chocolate and hazelnut as our desserts. THIS IS WAY TOO GOOD! the chocolate mousse just melt in our mouth. The taste is enhanced with the additional crushed hazelnuts, broken raspberries, roasted rice pugffs, chocolate tuile & praline. highly recommended dish for desserts!

this is my second time at saveur and it did not disappoint me at all
