Went to one of my preferred chinese dim sum places in Singapore. As usual, they were packed and had to take a queue number. Queue time was not too bad today, approximately 5 minutes.

Verdict of some of the dishes tasted today..
Dou miao with garlic: would have been good if there were more garlic. Lack a fragrant scent too.
Fu pi roll in oyster sauce: same as the usual fu pi roll, just that this one is drowned in oyster sauce. (yes drowned. coz very salty!
)

Oh by the way, service was relatively slow today as compared to previous visits. Think it was due to slow delivery from the chef's department. Tables around us were also found asking the servers when the rest of their food orders will arrive.

Bottom line: I will return for my beloved chicken feet

Swee Choon is kinda famous for the Mee Suah Kueh (2 for $2), which is a deep fried rice cake that is wrapped in a salty rice vermicelli. But that has never been my favorite. We had the Salted Egg Yolk Custard Bun (3 for $3.60) which wasn't all too bad. I liked the Sichuan Chili Oil Wanton (4 for $4) which had the right amount of spice and vinegar. The Steamed Pork Ribs ($2.50) were also tender and well marinated.

I rather liked the pan fried carrot cake (2 pieces for $2) that had the right chunks of radish and dried shrimps. No Chee Cheong Fun for me because it is the regular kind and not the steamed Cantonese sort. Yes i'm picky that way.

You MUST order the Fried Golden Tofu ($3.50) that is lightly crusted on the outside and seasoned with pepper and salt. The silky texture is simply amazing. The steamed beancurd roll in oyster sauce ($3.20) is also very good.

I'll definitely be heading back if hunger pangs strike in the middle of the night!

Outside this restaurant, there are chairs for customers to sit while waiting for the restaurant to open and also for customers to wait for their turn to enter the restaurant, and yes, there is really such a need.

After reading online that this restaurant is always crowded, I decided to reach before it opens. When I reached there, there were only two customers sitting on the chairs provided and my mom and I quickly grabbed a sit on two other chairs provided. Not long after we reached there, more and more customers started to join in the queue, without stopping since then.

While waiting for the restaurant to start its business, we were give some menus and an order paper to tick the dishes we want. For a first timer of this restaurant, choosing of what dishes to order can be sort of 'hard to made' decisions, as all the pictures of dishes look so tempting and apart from a wide variety of dimsums, there are quite a number of other dishes too. However, since my mom and I were only craving for dim sims, we decided to order purely dim sums.

When the restaurant finally opened, all the customers rushed in to ensure that they can get indoor seats, and the sequence of arrival does not seem to matter at all in this case. Fortunately, my mom and I managed to get our indoor seats, which did justice.

One of the main selling point of this restaurant is that it serves dim sum in smaller portions compared to other dim sum restaurants, thus, customers will be able to order more varieties. The prices are reasonable and taste of food are not bad too.

Although there are only two of us, but we ordered quite a number of dim sum dishes, in the end, there are leftovers and it is good that there provide those take away boxes for customers to take away their leftovers.

Out of all the dim sum dishes my mom and I ordered, there were some hit and miss.
The ones that managed to leave an impression in us are: char siew pau, portuguese egg tart, prawn and banana fritters, BBQ pork pastry, xiao long pau and sichuan chilli oil wanton.

The dish that left a really bad impression in us is: pan fried spring onion bread (thick bread with minimal weird tasting spring onion fillings).

Other dim sum dishes tried are not too bad but nothing special too.

After I have given the 'Carrot Cake' over here a good try, I have been a big fan of this 'Dim Sum' place for at least 3-4 years. The 'Carrot Cake' not only come with a generous portion, the fragrance and the taste are fantastic too and the nice crispy texture would be something that one could look forward to.

The 'Yang Chun Mian' over here would be something that I would highly recommend too. The Noodles are handmade by one of the chefs over here and it's pretty chewy and springy. Even though it doesn't come with a lot of ingredients, but it's definitely something that the Noodles lovers shouldn't miss.

By the way, the 'Har Gao'(Shrimp Dumplings) over here are a big (+) too. The amount of fresh prawns added into the 'Dim Sum' are extremely generous. I wonder why didn't the prawns burst out of the Dumplings itself. By the way, one thing that I like about the 'Har Gao' over here would be the nice balance between the skin and the ingredients used in the process of making this 'Dim Sum'.

(However, too bad that have impose the additional charges into the dine-in 'Dim Sum' orders already. I kinda miss the cheap 'Dim Sum' that they were offering back then.)

This is the best la mian I have eaten so far and surprisingly from a dim sum restaurant. The soup is not sour to my expectation that i have to ask for more vinegar. Spiciness wise, 1st few mouthful is not hot enough but the more I eat, the hotter it get! Then I realised their secret. Chili Padi. They use small shredded chili padi. The soup itself is not spicy at all. If u goin to eat there, trust me... Order their La Mian! There are 8 kinds. Totally worth the wait

This is the place to go to for late night dim sum. Instead of the usual morning dim sum, Swee Choon opens only at night and serves dim sum besides noodles and dumplings and other dishes. The highlight for me, besides the opening hours, is the liu sha bao (custard bun) which is done pretty well. Eat it while it is hot and you will get the soft custard filling flowing out of the soft bun.

Another dish which is not commonly found is the mee sua kueh. It is similar to fried carrot cake, except it is made of mee sua. Strands of mee sua are fried till crispy. It is good though oily. You will need to share this as the grease can make it a bit heavy on the stomach.

The har cheong gai (prawn paste fried chicken wings) is pretty good too. Don't bother ordering the bean curd. It is pricey at $2 or more and is very average. You are better off having bean curd somewhere else. The other dishes we ordered are not that memorable at all.

Last week, i finally laid my hands on their dim sum as i was nearby for a talk. I took away an egg tart, 2 of their signature mee sua kueh, a taro puff and a char siew sou.

I really love egg tarts so much that i will definitely have them whenever i lay my eyes upon them outside. This egg tart satisfied me with their crispy flaky crust and milky soft custard filling. The char siew sou was another delectable pastry that has very light skin encompassing sweet, smoky char siew within.

The taro puff was crispy on the outside and smooth on the inside. However, i do not like the taste of the chicken filling within as it was too salty.

I kept their signature mee sua kueh the last as i want to save the best for the last. Indeed it didn't disappoint me as the mee sua was very well-flavoured. The mee sua was soft on the inside and crispy on the outside being deep-fried.

Even though their dim sum is not the best i have tried, they do satisfy my dim sum cravings.

Though it is quite pricey ($7 for 4 wings). Overall I spend about $24 per pax which I think is on the steep side.

红油抄手 - Wontons in spicy chilli sauce. This was definitely a kick with very tender wonton skin packed with fresh minced meat. The sauce could be spicier though to really have the full taste of authentic 红油抄手.

Hargao - It wasn't very impressive, the skin was a tad too sticky though they had fresh ingredients. I didn't really like the type of prawns used though, the usual processed prawns or 玻璃虾, as it failed to bring out the natural sweetness of seafood.

小龙包 Xiaolongbao - This was quite a good one, or perhaps it was because I was craving for it. Plenty of soup inside which made eating it abit tough but worth it. There was abit too much skin though, in terms of proportion with the meat and soup inside.

Banana Prawn Fritters - Tasted alot like goreng pisang, except that prawns are added inside. Same as hargao, I didn't really like the type of prawns used. It was abit too oily though, gave the rather jelat feeling after eating it.

This was the base right after peeling, call me anal or perfectionist, I somehow prefer my food to look untouched and the molten contents contained within the skin. Taste-wise, it wasn't too bad, with the flowy texture and served piping hot. It could have been less oily, perhaps with lesser egg yolk used as I couldn't really taste the sweetness of the custard in it.

Yam Paste served in a tub

Love the presentation of it, but the taste wasn't up to standards. Not the authentic teochew style of yam paste, it has generous servings of coconut milk. That aside, the paste itself wasn't fresh and had a tinge of stale oil, commonly known as 臭油味, infused in it. The pumpkin has also lost its sweetness that's supposed to add flavour to the yam paste and the rare gingko nuts inside were boiled beyond recognition. I might be abit harsh on the review though, since I'm an absolute yam paste fan and it hasn't been easy finding good yam paste around. (That's why I love going for wedding dinners!)

Overall, it's a pretty alright place, with several hits. Not exactly very affordable though as we paid about $20 each. It probably isn't worth making a special trip down to try, but would suffice if you're in the area looking for some decent dimsum around the vicinity.

My friends and I love this! This Chilled Chicken in Spicy Bean Taste is a great appetizer. The chicken is succulent and I usually don't eat chicken skin but this whole combination is so great I just had to eat it. It's a bit spicy and sweet. Though there's a layer of oil floating on top, it's so good it makes you forget all the guilt!

The Fried rice with shrimps was bland and lacked wok hei.

Overall, Swee Choon offers a really large variety of dim sum and shanghainese food in a fuss free dining environment. But I think it's a safer option to stick to their dim sum rather than their main dishes. It can get crowded during dinner and supper time but waiting time is pretty short.
