You can step into the Japanese Restaurants in 5 star hotels or higher, you can expect to pay exorbitant price. You go to normal shopping centre, you end up with some sushi franchise with a very standard quality. Fortunately in the past few years, there has been some Japanese restaurant popping up in Singapore providing excellent quality food with reasonable price.

Please note that Chubby Botak Koala referring to “reasonable price” not cheap price.

Located in Triple One Somerset, Fukuichi is slightly out of the way from the major traffic on Orchard Road. Little Devil, I and a guest visited Fukuichi on a Sunday and the Triple One Somerset is not very crowded. There were ample parking space in the building. From our seating, we actually have a glimpse of the Sushi Bar, which was well occupied that day.

We started our meal with Yasai Stick (($8) and Tatami Iwashi ($9). The Yasai Stick is combination of raw vegetables with miso paste. The vegetables were chilled, so it remain fresh and crunchy. The miso paste is average, not the better ones. Meanwhile the Tatami Iwashi (Baby Japanese Anchovy) is light and crispy. Good appetizer.

The Sashimi Moriawase (Jyo - $78) next to appear. It is the premium assorted cuts consist of swordfish, salmon belly, tuna, scallops, yellow tail and sweet prawns. The cuts are smooth, fresh and good in size.

Next we have the Sushi Moriawase ($35) and Shake Aburi Maki ($22), which consist of salmon, scallop, sweet prawn, fish roe, unagi, tuna, swordfish, tamago and mini roll of tuna. The spread of the sushi selection is very good. The rice taste just nice, not lumpy and well balance vinegar taste. Shake Aburi Maki is a seared salmon roll. It seems that seared sushi are in trend at the moment, and the seared salmon just melts in your mouth. Foodgasm? Almost, but not there yet.

For the cook food section, we proceed ordered Tako Karaage ($12), Niku Fagura Sauce ($35), Hiyashi Gyomen ($12) & Kaisen Zousui ($16). Tako Karaage or deep fried octopus was juicy, tender with a slight springy texture. It is not chewy and goes well lemon and mayonaise. Niku Fagura Sauce is grilled beef cube with foie gras sauce. The beef cube is tender, grilled to medium rare. It is juicy and tender, but the creamy foie gras sauce is just amazing. Yum Yum, definite foodgasm!!

Hiyashi Gyomen is a cold fish noodle. A creative alternative to normal soba. I saw this in an Iron Chef show, so I could not resist to try it out. It is very springy and a bit chewy. The dipping sauce has some ginger in it to offset the fishy smell in the noodle. Very unique, but not to my liking. Kaisen Zousui is just the complete comfort food. It is a rice with seafood broth. The rice are well covered with different cuts of seafood. The clear broth is very robust. A very good way to end the meal.

Unfortunately, it was not the end of the meal for us, we decided to satisfy a little bit more of our cravings. So come the Uni sushi ($20/pair), unagi (eel - $10/pair), anago (sea eel - $12/pair) and toro aburi sushi (seared tuna belly - $24/pair). Well LD has the perfect ending, with her uni. The sea eel taste lighter then the normal eel, which was good here. And the seared tuna belly just melts in your mouth. At this point of time, we were basically stuffed and happy to be rolled out from the restaurant.

Service here is very friendly and attentive. The service staff even told us to stop ordering, as she was worried that we might ordered to much.

Compliment to Chef John Phua for the excellent food and his friendliness. He even took time to post for the photo below. Thanks Chef!!

Overall, we totally have a memorable dining experience dining in Fukuichi. The food is excellent in terms of freshness, quality and taste. Price is very reasonable. You get what you paid for. Our final bill was $348.40 inclusive GST and service tax. We look forward to our next visit. Kassai!!! Cheers!!

Service remains attentive and excellent, and ambience is still the same - quiet, exquisite and serene. I had my much-craved Cold Crabmeat Tofu - a very delicious and rich blend of crab-tofu served with a thick layering of mashed century egg, spring onions and scallions on top. The flavor is buttery, flavorful and refreshing.
Next, the Cold Fish Noodles - something I had ordered by mistake. It somewhat slipped my mind that usually I ate the Hot Fish Noodles (the soup is fabulous), but this was one of their signatures as well, and it sure didn't disappoint. The noodles were springy with good texture that was not too hard nor soggy, and because it is made entirely of fish flesh, there was a tinge of sweetness to it. Dipped with the cold dark sauce that it is served with, this dish leaves one desiring for more.
The next item I had was the Salmon Sashimi - slices of thick, fresh and sweet raw salmon that does not lose its bouncy texture.

Longish bento came in set was superb value for money, included starter, soup, main course and dessert. Salad dressing, Tempura and Teriyaki Fish were a filling portion with a bowl of rice, complimentary thickly soup was served along too. We ordered side dishes to share as well, Hand Roll Sushi was freshly-made and well-accompanied the crispy soft-shell crab. Salmon was soft yet chewy, seasoning was just nice for my liking. Most impressive unique dish was the Ebi Almond Tempura, overwhelming with excessively generous coat of Almond flakes which matched perfectly with sweetness of natural shell-less shrimps. Went on weekday lunch, thus it was not too crowded. Food quality was awesome with reasonably pricing, I will consider to re-visit again.

Have you ever discovered a simple-looking restaurant by chance, tried the food, and gotten addicted to one or more of the dishes? Well, it happened to me, when I chanced upon Fukuchi Japanese Dining with my buddy Cain*.

This restaurant boosts of a traditional Japanese interior; quiet and serene ambience, ideal for business lunches or friends' gathering. The simple decorations are easy on the eyes, and comforting to the soul. Yes, they have VIP / private rooms and alfresco dining too, if one pleases.

First we had the Crab Roe Tofu - which was a cold dish. The crab roe was superb - delicious and melts-in-your-mouth. Set against the very lightly-flavored tofu (beancurd), they complement each other greatly; both smooth, both mouthwatering on its own.

The next item was a Cold Fish Noodle - what is so unique about this dish is that the noodles themselves are made of fish meat! Yes, not flour, wheat or starch - but fish flesh! It was ultra springy in texture, and the taste was just heavenly. It was literally love at first bite for Cain* and I. Since then, I have been having craving for this, and actually came back one more time to satiate my craving. This was truly one of the tastiest noodle dishes I had ever eaten, and the soup was nicely flavored with seaweed and hints of ....fish essence?

we decided to order a bento each. my friend was not satisfied & insisted to order a sake (he was evidently in greater birthday mood than i & took 90% of the sake as i told him he would) & beef hobayaki S$38. i ordered a S$6 kani tofu to share as i read about it & wanted to try.

we were served a complimentary kobachi to get started – a small dish with chopped tuna. this was tasty, a good appetizer. the bento also came with a salad, simple cut cabbage that was very refreshing & enjoyable with the ponzu dressing. the kani tofu (basically pitan tofu with crabmeat) was good, tasty though i thought the one with tobiko at hokkaido sushi was better.

the bento was good quality. the sashimi (maguro, kajiki, sake) were all very sweet. the sushi & maki were competent. the pan-fried salmon was good, very tasty. the tempura were above average. :-)

the beef (aussie) hobayaki with shitake mushrooms was quite good. i first came across this preparation at takayama. the local hida beef (飞弹牛) was an excellent wagyu, and was served on a magnolia beef (朴叶). i would rate this beef as equal to that served at dozo, not as good quality as that served at the clan. :-)

in all, a very enjoyable dinner. though we meet often, we had very good chat before calling it quits for the night.

It's fried but juicy, and the sauce makes it very yummy. There's some ginger mixed into the sauce, which gives it a very fragrant smell. One of the best fish I've had in a Japanese restaurant. The tempura was good too, it wasn't too fried and the prawns were very fresh. Enjoyed dinner here!

Bento [Complete meal served in a lacquered meal box] ($40) – This bento set has basically everything – sashimi, sushis, tempura and grilled mentai salmon. Not exactly the cheapest bento in town, I shared this with my friend, along with a noodles dish each to keep the bill low. Every component of this bento was delicious! Sashimi slices were fresh and thick; aburi sushis were just as good too. However, as a result, the California maki paled in comparison. Next, the batter of the tempura was really light and crispy – the better ones around I would say. My favourite of the bento set must be the salmon which was grilled to perfection, with some flavour-packed cod roe mayonnaise sauce accompanying the tender fish meat.

Overall, we are very satisfied with this meal and the service of the staffs. they are very friendly and attentive. This restaurant has good ambience too. I really like this place alot, will definitely visit again

This place is overhyped and unauthentic.

I visited the restaurant after reading good blog reviews, I sincerely hope the restaurant hasn't been giving out free media tastings to bloggers to write positive reviews.

Service staff are not polite, definitely not something expected in a Japanese restaurant... but then again, they are not Japanese anyway.

Prices are really expensive and the food, though not bad-tasting, isn't anything close to amazing... to justify those prices.

Our sashimi platter consisted of the typical salmon, tuna and yellowtail slices.Sashimi was tough, frozen and expensive. Nothing amazing. Also when it was served, there was a foul smell, but we dismissed it as we were sitting close to a row of shoes near the private dining rooms so we naively thought the foul smell came from the shoes. My friend bit into the bed of shredded radish under the sashimi and spat them out as they were foul-tasting. On closer inspection, we realised the foul smell came from the radish that had gone bad.

I alerted the service staff, who did not even apologise whatsoever, just took the plate away and returned it to the kitchen. she returned awhile later with a new plate, still unapologetic.

I don't understand why the kitchen staff failed to notice the foul radish smell during preparation when it hit us the moment the plate arrived at the table.

This substandard food quality does not justify such high prices.

The rest of the food was only mediocre at best.

I will never return again, neither will I be recommending it to friends and family.

With a reservation at 7.30, we arrived slightly early, but was still ushered to a bar-top seat that the staff had already prepared for us.The interior is distinctly japanese, with marbled table tops, hints of bamboo and wood. Service isn't top notch, but they are generally polite and courteous. Besides, we came for the food, not the staff!

The bar gives us a lovely view of the sushi chefs at work, expertly slicing the raw fish with even strokes, resulting in fish slices of perfect consistency!

We ordered the Bento Set A for $40 (this is the most expensive bento set because of what it consists of!), which comprises sashimi, assorted sushi, grilled salmon with roe, tempura, an appetiser dish and miso soup. We also ordered two pieces of Mekajiki (swordfish sushi) for $8 and their signature Seared Salmon Sushi for $22 (for 8 pieces). The prices are a tad pricey but when the dishes came, we fully comprehended why we were paying just that extra bit for our food.

The starter was a serving of Japanese style salad, in a light/tangy miso dressing. It tasted more sour than other Japanese style salads, so if you like your food really tangy -this one's for you. The cold jellyfish was mediocre, but proved to be a refreshing appetiser.

The Bento Set came in 3 portions -the appetiser and the 2 bento boxes. The first bento box had 3 components -roe covered sushi, a sashimi assortment (prawn, tuna and some fish I did not recognise!), and a sushi assortment with raw fish. The sushi impressed me because the lightly vinegared rice was so well shaped and it complemented the fresh fish. The fish was firm, not overly frozen nor wet, and was so delightfully tasty in its pure, unseasoned form. Delicious. The prawn and sashimi deserve a special mention. The prawns were creamy and the sashimi came in generous, thick slices -a truly treat...before I knew it, we had polished off that entire plate

Swordfish is one of my favourite fish apart from the usual tuna and salmon. Swordfish is firmer and less creamy, but the freshness really shines through, especially when its delicious, cold cut is a refreshing change from the creamier salmon belly. It's a fantastic contrast to anything fried and cloying, making this one of my top clean-eating picks! My companion was trying swordfish for the first time and he commented that the 'clean taste of the swordfish is really uplifting'! Definitely recommending this to everyone! The salmon and tuna go for around $6-7 per pair, and there are premium items such as sea urchin on their menu. Only for those feeling indulgent!

(Cont Bento) The second portion of the bento included the cooked food -grilled salmon with a layer of roe smeared on it, and assorted tempura. The tempura was the only mediocre dish in our dinner for that day, but it was still of a decent standard. The outside of the tempura was light and crisp while the inside still retained the freshness of the ingredients -the carrots, capsicum and prawns still maintained their original tastes. The salmon was what surprised us the most -the outside had been smeared with a layer of salmon(?) roe, giving the fish an even creamier taste. The flakes of salmon just slide off when your chopsticks gently pick at the salmon, and the savoury Japanese-soy style sauce has a taste consistent with expertly made teriyaki dips. Heavenly.

The seared salmon sushi is on the pricier side with 8 pieces for $22, but its completely worth it. Rolled by the masters with japanese cucumbers and avocado, with the salmon torched before serving, the fish has a slightly smoky smell to it. When you sink your teeth in however, it's a fusion of flavours with creamy textures combined with the burnt aroma of semi-cooked fish. Delicious as it looks -everyone should try this! It's one of their more popular sushi orders and nearly every table has one plate of this.

The Bento is great for sharing -perfect for 2 people, so you get to order other sushi and try other stuff too! This bento also gives the widest variety (you can get a bento set for around $20+, but the variety of the bento isn't as vast and the quality of the dishes are less premium too), but also ensures that you get the best of everything. Fantastic deal! Fukuichi also offers a range of hot dishes, but we say skip that. Go straight to the ala carte sushi and signature rolls -try the seared salmon, or live to regret it!

The place is pretty spacious, but it can get a teeny bit crowded especially on Friday and weekend nights, you may want to call and make a reservation ahead! This is also one of the places where bar top dining isn't cramped and stuffy, there's ample foot room and space for the dishes, and it's interesting watching the chefs at work (at least you know how your sashimi is being prepared!!). Fukuichi serves great, fresh Japanese cuisine with refined flavours for the discerning. It may not be on the highest end of Japanese fare available locally, but it comes close to the best value for quality (the bill came up to around $82 in total for 2 people.)

Waiting time: After ordering, the first dish (Ebi Almond Tempura) came in 3 minutes! Subsequently, the dishes came one by one in two to three minutes.. that's fast! For hot items, they came real hot! hahaha..

Ambience: The restaurant is spacious and not cramped like some Japanese restaurants. The setting is recommendable for group gathering, family and couples too..

Verdict: I'll be back! (in terminator's voice) to conquer other dishes!!! hahahahaaa~~

Visited on a Friday afternoon. There are lots of seats available. Ordered unagi lunch menu Service was sluggish in the beginning, but picked up towards the end. Staff was efficient and could do with more smiles.Food came fairly quickly. We had cold kani tofu with century egg as appetizer. This item is free due to the current UOB credit card promotion. It is a treat from the office, if not I don’t think I will be patrolling this restaurant again.

We tried their chef recommended kani tofu, which was cold tofu made with lots of crab meat topped with a century eggsauce. The crab meat was a pleasant surprise & the dish was very refreshing. I ordered the bento set ,grilled cod with a mentaiko mayo sauce was quite rich & pretty nice , fresh, perfectly cooked & sufficiently seasoned but there's some small bone which we didnt expectedOverall i rate 6/10

Staffs are extremely friendly and always around when you need them. I have got to praise them for their excellent service. The Salmon Belly Sashimi they serve is one of the best I tasted. It is very fresh and chewy. If you are looking for a restaurant in town to have late dinner, do drop by Fukuichi as they have longer operating hours compared to other Japanese restaurants.
