No idea why NamNam is so popular, perhaps due to its reasonably priced dishes and the speed at which they serve your food. I have tried various dishes from NamNam and decided to try something different, so i got the dry yellow curry duck noodles. The taste of spices was not too strong and the duck was relatively tender although a little oily. The noodles costs around $9+, pretty alright considering its location.

This is the other NamNam noodle bar apart from the one at raffles city, which was equally crowded though. Not sure why namnam is so popular, but my friends like it as well. I decided on the quang style egg noodle which costs around $11. I had tried it before once and it's basically similar to mee pok, with fish cake, prawns etc. I particularly like the 2 pieces of crackers that came with it, which were crispy and flavourful.

Being a thai food aficionado , I have eaten more than my fair share of beef noodles and so when I heard that there was a new Vietnamese café in town selling Pho (which is somewhat similar to the Thai beef noodles that I’m partial to), I leapt at the chance to schedule a lunch date with a friend there to check it out. Located conveniently at the basement of Wheelock Place, it is a mere stone’s throw away from Orchard MRT station. The café is rather small so the tables are also incredibly small. Not too mention the fact that half the table is occupied by all the various condiments provided to season the food means that you have very little room on the table for anything else. Which is fine, because the main thing is that there’s enough space on the table for the noodles!

I opted for the beef noodles (no surprise here) and because we got the set lunch ($9.90), it came with some rice paper rolls and dipping sauce along with an option of tea or Vietnamese iced coffee. The rice paper rolls were quite tasteless until you dip them into the sauce, which was delicious and reminded me of the sauce used in “chee cheong fun”. The noodles came pretty quickly after the drinks and starter was served so props to the excellent service!

While it wasn’t the best pho I’ve had (the best located in a small eatery in China Town, San Francisco), it was well worth the price. Topped with generous amounts of beef slices, the broth was tasty and flavourable and the garnishes were also a nice touch. The noodles was silky smooth so that was a plus also. I would recommend this place to anyone who’s feeling puckish while shopping in town and ready for a nice warm bowl of soupy goodness.

But overall, the foods are quite alright. At $8.90 per bowl, I think is quite reasonable and portion is decent too.

We have always wanted to give NamNam a shot but whenever we walked past, the queue was quite a deterrent to say the least. That being said, there must be a reason why we never fail to spot a queue outside this humble looking eatery located at Basement 2 of Wheelock Place and we were determined to find out why on this occasion! With an open concept with no partition as a former restaurant, it set a relaxed and casual ambiance. In fact, for some reason, we thought it was located within ION Orchard for we walked over unknowingly. We tried to beat the lunch crowd but still ended in a short 10 minutes queue, which seemed reasonable and acceptable.

Value Set Lunch (S$9.90)
Wanting a quick lunch, I settled for the set lunch, which had just two options, either the pho chicken or beef as main with a freshly made Southern shrimp roll and an iced beverage. The drinks option was limited to classic iced coffee with condensed milk or iced lotus tea.

Fresh Southern rolls with sweet shrimps, egg, and fresh herbs

There is a stark difference between the Vietnamese spring rolls with the 'Northern' style typically being deep-fried flour rolls while the 'Southern' version is a healthier rendition. The sweet shrimp was thinly sliced into half, so you are actually served just a prawn despite offering two rolls. The rice-paper roll wrapping the generous serving of rice vermicelli, fish cake, dried beancurd skin and herbs felt slightly stiff, thick and rubbery. We actually struggled a little with trying to tear off a portion for a mouthful. On its own, the spring roll was rather bland for the plain rice vermicelli formed the bulk of the filling, which pretty much nullified the flavours from the complementing ingredients. It was disappointing for we had expected a much better offering from an eatery that prides itself for offering Vietnamese local delights. That being said, they had a beautiful 'special homemade sauce' - according to the serving staff.

This brown sauce had a blend of a few condiments but peanut and 'hoi sin' sauce came out as the prevailing tastes that lingered at the back of our taste buds. The generous mixture of crispy fried shallots and crunchy peanut bits gave good complementing texture to the spring roll. The sauce, standalone, had the 'hoi sin' sauce being the dominating flavour, which might be a tad too strong for some.

We were quite surprised to find about 10 beef steak slices, albeit finely sliced, in this generous bowl. If you prefer your beef on the raw side, either tuck in real quick upon being served your noodles or fish them out onto a side plate like we did. The beef slices came in 'heaps' with about 3 slices per 'heap', so expect to peel each slice off yourself for each mouthful.

The savoury tasting broth was well-seasoned and tasty, perhaps a touch too strong for our palate, which left us scurrying for water to wash it down. According to what was stated on the menu, the intense broth was a result of over 24 hours of boiling. There was a good tang from the wedge of fresh lime, but it seemed too mild to provide a refreshing after-taste. While some of the beef steak slices were slightly overcooked, that could be owed to us spending some time on photo-taking before digging in! For the semi-cooked beef slices, they tasted smooth and 'okay'. The rice noodles or pho were cooked al dente and that helped to salvage the dish. Overall, the portions of noodles and protein were generous, which certainly fit the bill for being value for money.

Pork Meatballs, Pork Pate Banh Mi (S$5.90/-)

The well toasted baguette came stuffed with tender and succulent pork meatballs and pate, with enhanced flavours from mayonnaise, hot chilli peppers, pickled carrots, daikon, cucumber and fresh cilantro. The meatballs were delicate and moist on the inside while the pate had good full flavours without damping the baguette nor did it cause any sogginess. The overall feeling was very clean, healthy and fresh. The heat from the chilli peppers cut through the meaty flavours with a solid punch and awakened our taste buds much. We felt that the portion was pretty large, definitely more than what the classic '6 inch sub' at Subway would offer.

Classic Iced Coffee

The drinks were among the last to arrive but while making the payment at the cashier, he gave a pre-empt notice which I felt was considerate and appropriate. The iced coffee was part of the value set lunch and it was one of the better coffees. Do note that the typical orders came with condensed milk but I changed it for a plain black coffee. It was dark, intense, full-bodied, and had the right amount of acidity that would suit those with sensitive stomachs. Despite the load of ice cubes, the coffee stayed dense and in no way diluted, leaving that much desired beautiful after taste at the back of your throat. Slurp!

Fresh young coconut (S$5.90/-)

It was after payment did I realize that the coconut was priced equally as the baguette, which left us slightly bewildered. It seemed slightly overpriced according to the rest of the items on the menu. Nonetheless, it was everything we wanted in a good coconut drink. The coconut flesh was tender and could be scooped off the inside of the husk with great ease and the drink was sweet and refreshing, just the perfect beverage for a hot afternoon!

Admittedly, not all the dishes were fantastic but we would definitely return for the banh hi (baguette) and the coffee most probably as takeaway orders. Be prepared to cramp together with adjacent diners, shoulder-width apart, if you are looking to dine in. On the plus side, the prices of the dishes were affordable, value for money and catered for the mass market, especially at this corner of Orchard Road.

One of the thing that made me return was the soup broth. Even though there wasn't MSG used in preparing the food, the soup was always flavoursome. However this time when I had the beef pho, the soup wasn't as good as the last few times. Raw sliced beef was placed in the soup to cook and it's best eaten before the beef becomes overcooked. The noodles were still as amazing though.

Similar to Pho Stop's concept of bringing authentic Vietnamese cuisine to our doorsteps, it is not difficult to see why Nam Nam attracts snaking long queues, especially when their weekday lunch set meals (includes fresh southern rolls, a bowl of pho chicken/beef and a cuppa classic Vietnamese iced coffee or lotus tea - S$9.90) is up. Singaporeans, like me would be glad to know that is absolutely no service charge and that GST is already included in prices listed.

Quang Style Egg Noodle (S$10.90) is an interesting combination of pork rib, prawn, fish cake and rice crackers. It has an acquired taste of Chinese mee-pok (yellow flat noodle) mixed with herby leaves among other greens. The crackers look interesting with lots of sesame seeds, but tasted too bland for my liking. On the other hand, Dry Stewed Beef Noodles (S$8.90) resembles Cantonese Beef Hor Fun with savoury beef chunks.

Toasted baguettes stuffed with assorted ingredients, are recommended if you prefer a ligher meal or snack. We had the Fish cake and Tofu version (S$5.90), and it tastes surprisingly refreshing. Definitely for the health-conscious as well. Oh, and did I mention that they do not add MSG in their food?

Not particularly "wow-inducing", however if you adore Vietnamese cuisine, drop by Nam Nam Noodle Bar and enjoy a delicious bowl of pho.

Ok so, i was in the area on a Saturday night and i was looking for something to much with one of my good friends so he recommended me this place called nam nam noodle bar... thie dish was the beef pho... haha what a funny name... pho.. ok no disrespect to anyone..

We each ordered the beef pho and i was very reluctant to try it because i only really like the teochew one but in any case i gave it a go... The procedure of ordering is pretty straight forward due to their overwhelming crowd.

We were brought to a table by this Chinese national I think and was told our table number and to place our order at the counter for payment as well.

My friend ordered extra beef shank... so the total bill was around $23++ for 2 persons.

It was served in a ceramic bowl i think... Inside the dish was lean beef, beef shank, tendon and tripe but for me i dont like tripe or anything that is super weird or slimy. I tried the tendon... it was horrible... luckily the soup served with chili, mint leaves, spring onion i think and lime was good enough to kill the taste. The thin kway teow was stuck together but i was not complaining..

Overall a hearty meal with a smile in their service... fantastic and awesome becomes awetastic..

There are many things I like about NamNam's pho and one of them has got to be the freshness of the chicken. It is not overcooked and it is really FRESH, not frozen chicken, which I really like. I also get to put fish sauce in my soup, authentic vietnamese style, and have my chicken generously doused in their special chilli/hoisin sauce. My favourite part of the pho is probably the amount of spring onions, coriander and onions swimming in my delightful vietnamese broth -simply heavenly! The special thing about the soup is that it is so refreshing and tasty, it doesn't leave you feeling sickened by the taste -it has a tangy zest to it brought about by the lime, and it's just the right balance of salty and sour. The noodles are nothing to shout about, but they're not overcooked and I can slurp them up with the soup, so no complaints there.

I always leave feeling satisfied, and the servers are always so nice. There's usually a queue outside but turnover is high and we usually get a table within 15 minutes tops. The servers are always patiently explaining how the order system works and they always thank us for waiting when we order/pay at the counter. I appreciate that -to face high crowd volume every day but still greet customers with a smile on their face! Gotta love NamNam with its great food and nice service

I would say that if you want to go over for the set lunch, it is a must to be there earlier because you will need to queue. There is a notice stated to queue outside instead of going right into the cashier for payments but not everyone sees that. We did not have to wait for very long after ordering. The Fresh Rolls came within a minute after we make an order and payment over at the cashier. The Pho came slightly later and it was great! I saw comments saying that the chicken was very little and hard. However, I did not encounter these. There was quite a lot of chicken and I was too full from it that I did not finish the chicken. It wasn't that hard but there were a few pieces of chicken that has "red-like-stain" on it so I avoided eating. I ordered Iced lotus tea while my friend had the hot one. The hot one doesn't come in just 1 cup like the iced one. Instead, it comes in a pot which could fill about 3full cups with some left over. If you are a person that dislike Spring Onion, remember to request for a bowl of Pho without the Spring Onion because they really put a lot.

This is the Shrimp Rolls. If you do not like the sauce, you can consider dipping into your soup otherwise, it will be very dry.

However, one thing about this outlet is that, when we sat down while waiting for our food, I smelt something stinky which I wasn't sure what it was. Given the price and quantity, I think it is still pretty worth it.

There is another outlet at Raffles Shopping Centre. The other time when I walk past it, there was quite a long queue.

It's the third time I'm having lunch at Nam Nam Noodle Bar. Instead of the usual beef pho, I decided to try their chicken pho which was a rather bad choice. While the $9.90 set lunch comes with a choice of Beef/Chicken Pho, Summer Rolls and a drink (coffee / tea), the ingredients they used in the pho are extremely little. I would have preferred it to have more mint leaves and beansprouts. The chicken pieces were also quite limited.

I ordered the $9.90 beef steak set which comes with 2 Vietnamese spring roll, one bowl of beef pho noodles and a Vietnamese coffee with condensed milk.
My friend had the Ala carte duck yellow curry noodle ($8.90).
I like the Vietnamese spring roll, the specially made sauce goes very well with it with a sweet after taste. The spring roll is wrapped with a prawn and green onion.
Beef pho was the clear soup base type with tender red beef slices served.
Flavour is enhanced with a cut lime provided. Tried added hoi shin sauce to the soup and fortunately it taste nice. The soup is so tasteful that I finished the whole bowl

My friend was a little disappointed with her duck curry.
According to her, it doesn’t taste like duck and the curry taste is way too mild. Overall a good eat for me and would like to try the sandwiches next time, the bahn mi 5 spice pork belly which cost $5.90 looks popular with fellow diners.

The Dry Stewed Beef Noodle costs $8.90. Quite colorful with all the garnishing (chopped chilli, spring onions) and a piece of slice lime for customer to squeeze over the noodles. Spicy bowl of noodle with a big chunk of stewed beef noodle that wasnt cut and we have to chew or cut the big piece ourselves. The beef is stewed till the meat is so soft that every bite of the beef will have it stuck in between my teeth. Noodles were stick in a chunk altogether, there is not much oil to separate the noodles in between, this makes it difficult for the sauce to mix well with the noodles.

Pho Chicken $7.90. I dont really enjoy having chicken meat chunks with noodles. The meat they use is bland with not much chicken taste - guess that they have use the same chicken cubes for their bread. However, the soup base is still as good! Flavorsome!

Service
To have our food served, firstly we have to make our order on a piece of paper and clear our payment. The service is moderate. Waiting time for food is still ok. There are queues outside the restaurant.

Ambience
Narrow aisles. Becareful not to knock on someone when you make your way to the seat. They are always packed with customers. What I like is that they do provide hooks under the table for customer to hang their bags and stuff.

Price
Consider that the pricing is quite ok.

Recommendation / Tips
The place is quite hard for big groups.

Didnt fancy the prawn rolls, hard for me to chew but the noodles were great for me.. Sweet, sour and at the same time spicy. Was sad that the Vietnamese iced coffee served was like less than 3/4 of the cup! Sad because it was really good.

Will come back again of course.. but this time i wonder if they accept reservations during lunch.. hmmm...

Overall, I felt that my meal was still acceptable but I won't recommend my friends to try as their queue are always very long during lunch time and the overall taste is just average only.
