Home-grown chocolate brand Au Chocolat is really Willy-Wonka like, given the huge selection of chocolate cakes and candies. Lots of gift ideas if you are looking for any. This is my first time to Au Chocolat. I was really exited by the pretty displays of chocolates, candies and cakes and before long, I was busy snapping away like a small little girl out on an excursion.

Au Chocolate looks quite spacious on the outside. It occupies more than 2 stores' space. It has a chocolate shop on its own and the cafe is next to it. However, the cafe is quite small. Naturally as we are a big group of 10 and were sharing some food and drinks, the tables were a bit too cramped for us. Nevertheless, we made do with it.

For starters, we had truffle fries as recommended. There was a mild tint of sea-salt which blends very well with the fries. I like the presentation of the fries too as they were wrapped in Au Chocolat's special made newspaper.

For main course, we ordered fish & chips, roast chicken, spicy chorizo pasta, pork ribs, salmon crepe and salon sandwich. Most of the food was too salty, especially the pasta. The sauce was good and the pasta might have been less salty without the cheese. Individual portions were of the right size, but there were too much fries. Their mash potato was very soft and mashed very finely and hence would be a good substitute for fries.

We ordered a couple of drinks and the frozen hot chocolate was really good. It is not frozen and hot as its name suggests, but the chocolate was rich and creamy.

We also ordered a couple of cakes such as the original cheese cake, caramel swirl cake, pistacio cake, chocolate cake and the orange cake. The orginal cheese cake was the best of all.

The service staff were friendly and patient. They were also quick to refill empty glasses and clear away empty plates. They were also fast to respond to our requests for sauces, utensils etc.

Overall, I would say I had a pleasant dining experience at this place. I would recommend it more for desserts than main course. It would also be a good place for a lazy tea afternoon. I hope to go back and try its waffles, crepes and other desserts.

Disappointed in finding ice chips in the drink. Does not taste as chocolatey as expected. Just a cup of watered down normal chocolate, with a scoop of ice cream, covered in whipped cream and abit chocolate shavings. Not worth the $12++ I paying for it.

I'd been meaning to give Au Chocolat a go for quite a while now and it seemed like the right time so I picked the eatery for dinner. I didn't make any reservations but it wasn't that long of a wait; I got seats in about 5 mins.

The first thing that struck me about the interior was the decor and the furniture. The bistro really does resemble a quaint French cafe along a Parisian street - from the staff's uniform to the tables and chairs. Cute!

This is what I ordered: Boeuf Bourguignon ($26), beef cheek stew with baby carrots, mushrooms and mashed potato in the pot, slow cooked in veal stock and red wine. Comes with oh-so-soft brioche bread and chocolate/balsamic vinegar-topped salad too. I must say, I was super impressed with this dish. Beef stew is easy to make, but damn good beef stew is another level of heaven. The beef cheek chunks were very tender, and the gravy made from veal stock and red wine was divine... I took my own sweet time to scoop everything up with a spoon after all the ingredients were consumed. Delicious!!!

My boyf had the Roast Pork Belly ($29) - slow-roasted pork belly accompanied with garlic infused potato puree and raspberry infused apple sauce for that added oomph. The pork belly slices were nice and tender, and he loved the raspberry concoction which he used as a dipping sauce. Very interesting combo!

Finally, for dessert, we had the Au Chocolat Tart ($7).

Before I carry on to review the chocolate tart, I have to point out that as a patron, your choice of dessert is not limited to the menu. Don't forget to check out the confiserie next door for cupcakes, macarons, cakes and tarts! All you have to do is hop over after you're done ordering your mains (or before if you like), tell the staff at the counter your order, have them write a receipt for you, and bring that receipt back to the bistro before handing it to one of the staff. Tell them to serve it after your mains. This is a bit troublesome, yes, but as foodies I guess we'd do anything for food right?

Now, for the tart, it was kinda disappointing as it was really average. I found the chocolate a bit too bitter (my boyf liked it though), and the crust was too thin for me. I like it thick and moist... this one was on the flaky and crunchy side. It was a bit much too. I didn't finish it - which was a shocker cos I usually polish my plate clean when it comes to sweets. Oh well! I did want to try the other one, this chocolate cake made of milk choc mousse, raspberry gelee and vanilla cream. Next time I suppose! I wouldn't mind returning. Wait, scratch that, I WILL COME BACK!!

I actually made an order for a chicken mushroom crepe and side of truffle fries.
Till...
My google page decided to load itself.
And the reviews appeared in front of me.
From a few websites.
"Can you check on my order. I'd like to make a switch from crepe to burger, fries to calamari. Since I already have fries on the side."
"Sorry mam, it's already been cooked."
"Well. Would someone else possibly order what I just did?"
"Let me check again."
"Okay. I've voided it and put in your new order."
"Thank you. SO much."

This is our bestseller for 2012.
The Praline.
It wasn't a top choice for me honestly.
I wanted a chocolate tart.
Or maybe an apple pie.
Hmm.

And just to balance out the sweetness.
We chose a tart White chocolate raspberry cheesecake.

I could taste the white chocolate.
Which was a definite plus.
And the raspberry swirls were refreshingly tart.
But the base?
Soggy and insignificant.
Must've been kept for a bit.

Au Chocolat is a made-in-Singapore French-inspired playground for chocolates, confections and savoury treats, located at the prestigious Shoppes at Marina Bay Sands.

Why I call it a playground: It takes you on an enchanting romp; you swing by the candy shop (the confectionary) to gaze at dainty indulgences, almost feeling the need to tug on mum’s dress and beg her for one; ‘I scream for ice cream’, the ice cream booth dispenses a quintessential treat to appease the wailing kids; omnipresent at every theme park, the ‘toyshop’ is where the young and old can do some retail therapy or shop for souvenirs; and lastly, hop over to the whimsically decorated bistro dining area with your famished stomachs to nourish your bodies after a day of play.

At Au Chocolate Bistro, Head Chef Elvin Chew showcases his flair for incorporating chocolate into savoury dishes, succeeding without facing unwelcome backlash. He made kids’ dreams – of consuming chocolate during mealtime – possible, what conventional parents of Stone Age would not have approved of.

The Au Chocolat Bistro offers all day dining with a wide variety of flavours.

Au Chocolat Fudge Freeze ($12)

Rice and creamy chocolate fudge topped with whipped cream and chocolate shavings

The Au Chocolat Fudge Freeze was pure bliss, and I was so reluctant to share. But, imagine how much more calories I’d be consuming if I didn’t!

Modern Nicoise ($20)

Fresh picked salad with French beans, roasted potato pieces, feta cheese and sundried tomatoes topped with seared tuna

The menu consists of soups, burgers, sandwiches, pastas, meats and more. But, if your palate dares step out of the box, sample what Au Chocolat focuses on –chocolate.

If you think the integration of chocolate and salad totally defeats the purpose of ‘consuming salad to maintain a slim waistline’, don’t be too quick to judge! The dark chocolate balsamic vinaigrette contains no more calories and fat than your usual salad dressing. Furthermore, cocoa has health benefits to boot, such as lowering blood pressure and cholesterol. As opposed to what I was envisaging, the dressing is deficit of sweetness; it is slightly tangy and subtly bitter.

Au Chocolat Benedict ($18)

My favourite ingredient is egg. Eggs Benedict is undeniably one of my favourite dishes.

All-day breakfast is served at Au Chocolat. Did I just hear some hoorays from night owls who always have a hard time waking up early?

In their own variation of Eggs Benedict, poached eggs sit atop bacon, spinach and tomatoes on a base of English muffin. Notice the colour of their hollandaise? It’s not the typical light lemon-yellow colour, but a sepia brown that’s gotten its hue from the infusion of red wine and dark chocolate.

I quite like this innovative interpretation; it didn’t taste as bizarre as I thought it would. A potential dish that’s likely to be widely accepted.

Stuffed French Toast ($18)

Another all-day breakfast item to perk up your day would be the Stuffed French Toast. Fresh plump berries colour the plate with brilliant hues of red. Crushed cornflakes coat the rims of two thick slices of brioche bread, providing a desirable crunchy element, in contrast to the creamy mascarpone cheese and juicy fruits.

Fancy some crepes? There are both sweet and savoury options.

Savoury Crepes, Creamy Chicken & Mushroom ($18)

Chicken fillet served with sautéed mushrooms, bacon, garlic and sour cream

Savoury crepes are served with salad that’s drizzled with Au Chocolat’s chocolate balsamic vinaigrette.

I wanted to love the Creamy Chicken & Mushroom Crepes, I really do, but there’s one reason why I didn’t –just one.

The crepe is made flawless; the aromatic cream that slightly moistens the crepe is delectable. One thing I could not overlook though, was the dryness of the chicken.

Battered Fish & Spiced Chips ($22)

Lightly-battered white fish fillets with crispy chips tossed with Parmesan and herbs, served with their signature green tartar sauce

Here comes my darling –fish and chips. I can eat this at any time of the day. Fish is crisp golden on the outside, juicy and succulent on the inside. Love everything, except the portion size. Not sure if they shrunk the fish just to fit into the cone without having it topple over, or if the chef stole a piece coz’ its so delish, or if they’re just plain stingy. They then try to fill you up with a generous amount of fries so you’d probably be too full to complain after the meal. I could get the same amount of satisfaction with half that price, at Torte for instance.

Duck Confit ($27)

A popular classic with an Au Chocolat twist, pan-roasted duck thigh served with potato mash, white wine poached pear and topped off with a tangy chocolate orange sauce.

Truffle Fries ($15)

Truffle fries are love. Drizzled with white truffle oil and seasoned with truffle sea salt, the aroma just blows one away.

Chocolate Cake ($18)

Rich dark chocolate cake layers filled with luscious milk chocolate mousse and crunchy dark chocolate pearls, enrobed in dark chocolate ganache, served with a scoop of vanilla gelato

I was a little disappointed with the chocolate cake. As opposed to my high expectations, it’s unfortunately not the best I’ve ever had, not the moistest, and not the richest. It is decent chocolate cake at best.

Au Chocolat cupcake ($5.50 each)

The cupcakes earned most points in visual appeal! I didn’t get to eat them though, as much as I wanted to. I wonder where they disappeared.

Extra large Blanc Feuilletine Macaron ($7 each)

I especially adore their range of ‘extra large’ macarons –as large as the size of an average palm. Like those with a sweet tooth who yearn for a bite of every single flavour, I too can’t come to a conclusion as to which flavour I loved most –I say this with a very positive tone.

Extra large Blanc Feuilletine Macaron ($7 each)

If you’re in a group, order one of every flavour. You won’t regret it!

Chocolate is the whole essence of Au Chocolat, and I’m glad their artisanal chocolates didn’t disappoint. You can purchase these at the Confiserie, next to the Bistro.

Chocolatier Tai Chien Lin firmly believes that the quality of chocolate used for any creation should always be fresh and of the best.

Chocolate encompasses antidepressant effects; it contains serotonin, which acts as an anti-depressant; it stimulates endorphin production, which gives a feeling of pleasure. The next time you feel depressed, Au Chocolat may just be the antidote.

Purée of Pumpkin with Honeycomb Served with herbed croutons

This should not be called a soup because it is so rich but not because cream has been added, but because you are just literally eating pureed pumpkin. Naturally sweet with bits of smoked chicken inside. It would be great to have this in winter!

Main-American chestnut with Pumpkin Risotto
Another dish that has exceeded my expectation because it is packed with cheesy flavour (well this means that some might not like it) mixed with steamed whole chestnuts, bacons, cubed carrots. This is just pure comfort food that you can just dig in spoonfuls after spoonfuls.

The dessert for the cake was apple cheesecake so it did not appeal to us. Hence, we settled with a 2 course Halloween meal.To try out something original from the restaurant, I ordered a signature ala carte dish

Dessert-Rustic Caramel Apple Pecan Cake with Ice Cream Gelato
This warm but not hot caramel pecan cake served in a skillet is not an apple crumble. So it is actually quite filling. The sweetest part is the ice cream and not the cake.

In short, the main courses fared better than the desserts. the service especially by a same guy was unsatisfactory as I received unpleasant expressions when I asked for a change from high tea set to duck confit. Other than that, the ladies at the takeaway section and other servers at the bistro were friendly.

I was pretty impressed with the french inspired interior design as well! And yes dont be alarmed if you notice a toy train choo-chooing away above your head!!

When you're dining with Au Chocolat, be prepared with their wide variety of crepes to entrees to cakes.. We were spoilt with choices. Took us quiet a while to finally decided on the Classic Burger & Au Chocolat Signature Burger.

I should have came with an empty stomach! The Classic Burger portion for me was HUGE! The meat patty was really generous! And when i thought no burger could get any bigger than that.. along came Au Chocolat Signature Burger. Its the Eiffel Tower of burgers. My friend had a hard time figuring out how to eat it. It looks too good to eat too. Just picture sun dried tomatoes with thick beef patty, covered with melted cheddar cheese, top with a big juicy portobello mushroom & crispy bacon served in a sesame coated bun. Does it not make your mouth watery?? As tasty as it seems, the portion was overwhelming for the both of us.

Their service staffs friendly and always on their feet. The bistro wasn't full during lunch, but they're always making sure that their customer's are happy dining. They even reminded me that i requested a birthday cupcake for my friend when i made the reservation a week ago.

Thankfully for the MBS staff discount, we spent a total of $45 only! The cupcake was on the house! How nice was that!

This was my first dining experience.. and it wont be the last! As the Terminator would say.. I'll be back!!

I stumbled upon this place while I was exploring MBS. It seemed relatively new yet it was swarming with people. Au Chocolat had three shops. The first consisted of a gift shop which sold plenty of cute souvenirs, sweets, chocolates and gelato ice cream! Friendly staff were seen to be outside the stores welcoming customers in which made them feel very welcome.

The second shop consisted of a mini bakery which had macaroons, cupcakes and slices of cake. It all looked soooo good and I was spoilt for choice having to pick 4 pastries out! The friendly staff explained to me the flavors that some of them had which helped me to decide.

The third shop was practically a diner where customers could order food, drinks and desserts. The ambience had a "paris feel" to it and the costumes of the waiters were just so adorable!
They even wore tall hats

I decided to get 2 chocolate macaroons (which were huge!) & 2pcs of the lemon meringue's. All the 4 items were of a very decent size; bigger then the usual kind. However, the prices were very steep and costs about $7 each. The macaroons consisted of a hard moisted shell with yummy chocolate filling which was rich yet not overwhelming. I had got one chocolate milk flavored one and the other was a white chocolate macaroon Definitely one of the best places to get macaroons from!

The lemon meringue had a nice tangy twist to it. It had a generous portion of lemon filling at the top and consisted of a nice biscuit-like texture at the bottom. Unlike most places, desserts here taste extremely fresh and many tourists as well as locals were seen patronizing the outlet. I had savored every bite!

The store also has their own membership program which consists of paying $80. Customers get vouchers worth $80 to purchase any cakes or pastries. Loyalty points are giving to customers whenever their membership card is produced during purchase.

The packaging is sooo adorable as all pastries come in colorful boxes with a pink or yellow paper bag (customers can request for the color). They definitely make good gifts!
