Today, Celine* and I decided to head to Ikoi Japanese Restaurant for lunch in the rain, just to satiate our sashimi cravings. It was a rather last minute decision, and I was surprised that she managed to make reservations in the morning for our noon-time lunch. Anyway, the well-known Ikoi Japanese Restaurant is located at 401 Havelock Road #01-01 Miramir Hotel, Singapore 169631 and the number for reservations is 6887 3788.
The restaurant has a rather sleek but simplistic, classically Japanese design - clean white and light brown tones, open concept and colorful tatami seats. Yes, we were fortunate enough to be given a Tatami seat even though there were just two of us, and it was my first time sitting this way - rather comfortable.
While browsing through the menu, we were being served the complimentary items such as the sumptuous Salmon Sashimi slices drenched in a lightly-flavored sauce, and the small teapot of Seafood Soup that I have missed since my last visit here years ago. The Sashimi was very fine and meltingly tender, and the seafood soup was tasty as ever, especially with the squeeze of lime wedge into it.
Very quickly, they brought us the first items of our order. The Shisamo which I have swo rn off during my last Japanese restaurant visit. This was an order by mistake, and the sinful recollection of its deliciousness when I was here years back - well, it is still delicious and filled with roe. The Agadeshi Tofu was lovely too - meltingly-crispy skin and sweetly smooth insides, floating in a plate of light soy sauce.
Next, the dish of Cucumber slices with accompaniment of tasty, savoury Miso beans - a refreshing delight. The lightly-salted and soft Edamane beans which made for a good snack in between waits. And the California Temaki - handroll with cucumber sticks, crabmeat, omelet and Japanese rice rolled in large sheet of seaweed - tasty and crunchy.
They brought us our Sake Maki - salmon sashimi with mayonnaise. The tiny dices of salmon sashimi bits stuffed into sticky Japanese rice, rolled into seaweed and sprayed with mayonnaise - was a combination of crunchiness, tenderness and deliciousness all rolled into one.

If you like to have free flow of good sashimi. Ikoi is the place to go! They offer quite a variety on their buffet menu and there are complimentary dishes once in awhile. The grilled salmon and mackerel is tasty! Must order that! The stir fry veggies is good as well. They also do have veggie sticks in a cup which is good if you like to refresh your tastebud. However, as it is always full house, the food might take some time to arrive. Must make a reservation before you go.

Ikoi's ala carte buffet menu offers a huge variety - Don, Udon, Noodles, Sushi, Nigiri, Sashimi, all kinds of side dishes etc Everything is prepared on the spot for you. What takes the cake for me would be of course their sashimi. Free flow of sashimi is one thing, but free flow of fresh sashimi of premium quality is a totally different and appealing matter altogether. Most of their dishes are decent and average, and their sashimi exceeds all expectations. Do order several plates, the sashimi comes pretty quckly as many people orders it.

Ikoi isn't really a very big restaurant and has limited space so make sure you book ahead in advance, maybe a week. The seats might be a bit small and cramp so do bare with the constraints!

I also like their Donbiri which is limited to one serving per pax. The soup broth is so rich that I can finish the whole pot of soup and polish the ingredients inside. Reservation is definitely recommended as bookings are mostly taken up fast especially during weekends.

If you are looking for Japanese sushi buffet, with a wide variety to choose from, Ikoi Japanese Restaurant located in Miramar Hotel might be worth a visit. Provided you going for quantity over quality.

An adult costs $38++ and requires advance reservation. You will first be welcomed with massive photos of local and overseas celerities taken with the shopowner. They are popular for their sashimi, thus sashimi lovers might love this place. At intervals, there will be complimentary dishes given to you. Not all of them tastes special, but probably termed as complimentary due to only one plate per table. Other than their sashimi, basically most of their other dishes are average only. Be prepared some dishes might be missing from your table. You can try to lace your order with them again, but no promise of it's attendance still!

Mention Ikoi to any foodie (at least the japanese ones) and you will get a bunch of mixed reviews. Personally, I think Ikoi seems somewhat overrated nowadays. Don't get me wrong; they used to be really good and value for money but with the competition (Irodori for example), they are not as good as they used to be. The sashimi remains good and thickly sliced so tell the waiters you want thinner slices. The gimmicky soup from the tea pot is so-so. Skip the teppanyaki stuff as they are forgettable.

The tempura is pretty decent without being too oily. But I will really just stick to the sashimi (although you will get disappointed sometimes with sinews inside)

The thing that is a must order is the mixed Sashimi Platter. Having heard that the sashimi is one of the freshest, I was disappointed. The meat of the fish was rather dry and was pretty rough in texture. The best thing would probably be the swordfish sashimi. But really, even the Salmon Sashimi did not taste fresh enough to make me crave for another plate. The tuna was really bad, it was quite fishy and tough.

Ikoi really lack variety. It's hard to pick which is my favorite dish from all the ones we tried. (Yes, we even ordered cherry tomatoes.) It's hard to pick because the food really tasted mediocre. If given a choice, I would choose Irodori anytime.

Overall, I really think it's not worth the money to dine there. Really can't figure out how Ikoi gained its popularity because the standard now really isn't impressive.

Hmm yummy, all the fish was fresh, the maki also delicious. we ordered many kind of sushi, tempura and side dish.
U can try the cold soba, it served with one small block of ice, so the soup is a bit cool
then also can try the cold salad. They served it very unique, the cucumber, the carrot, the celery cut in a long shape like a bamboo stick and put it inside the glass of shreded ice.

The other dish that u should try is the rice ball with salmon flake, wow in a triangle shape covered with seaweed, u can taste the soft salmon inside the rice
and also the salmon maki with the mayo sauce.

But one thing, if u are very hungry,u better don't come to this place as u will get hunger

Last order made by 10pm as the resto will be closed at 11 pm.

The cold side dishes here have many variety to choose from and most of them are really easy to eat and taste equally nice. But if i need to choose my favourite among them, that will be their spicy jelly fish and the deep fried vegetable strips. The jelly fish are very chewy, soft and easy to swallow. With the ideal seasoning to it, make it even more appetitizing and delicious. The fried vegetables are also very crispy and not too oily as well.

This Japanese restaurant is one of my favourite restaurant when comes to having the freshest raw fish and cold dishes. The environment is also very comfortable and spacious. Pre-reservation of seats is required if not you will most probably have to wait for quite sometime as it is always quite crowded during dinner hours. The sashimi is my favourite as the slice of it is quite thick and the taste is very fresh and juicy. Infact, its presentation is also quite outstanding as well.

We ordered a plate of sashimi. It consist of swordfish, salmon and tuna sashimi. All of them are really fresh! The salmon sashimi tasted juicy and sweet. Every piece of them are cut out nicely as they are easily chewable. The tuna sashimi are fresh as well, dipped it in a pool of soy sauce and grab a bit of wasabi to taste. Yummy! Swordfish is very tender and succulent with juice oozing out with every bite. yummy!

Ikoi has a good spread of yummies as always. You know this because on a Tues night, the restaurant is PACKED!

Ate too much food
and loved these very much:

1) Chawanmushi - for a buffet item, it really good. It's got a good size piece of chicken and half a crabstick. The egg is soft and tasty too. As good as the ones I make at home.

2) Fried Fishcake with Cheese - its really the normal Fishcake with a hole in the middle and the melted cheese together with the fried-ness. Nice!

3) Salmon Sashimi - generous, fresh thick slices of salmon yummies. You order by the slices so that awesome!

4) Teriyaki Salmon - they grill the salmon pieces till nicely charred on the edges and the thick teriyaki sauce is a great accompaniment for the taste.

There were many dishes I enjoyed but I couldn't remembered exactly how much I have eaten. It worked out to be about $40 per pax and it's $40 well spent!
