One can’t help but feel cheery upon stepping into InterContinental’s Man Fu Yuan. Unlike most Chinese restaurants decked in dark woods, reds and golds, Man Fu Yuan has romantic yet nostalgic interiors of Peranakan louvered windows shutters, butterfly chandeliers, oriental lattices in light woods and velvet lavender seats. One of the more chic Chinese restaurants, I must say.
Even the fine tableware matches the restaurant’s theme! Now, onto the food. We welcomed the amuse bouche, refreshing Drunken Chicken atop Winter Melon marinated in Orange Juice, with much enthusiasm as we were starving and it took quite awhile for the dim sum to be served as they are only cooked upon order.
Minced Pork Dumpling with Scallops ($6.80/3 pcs). Siew Mai alone is oooo, with scallop, I’d be all ahhhh…Man Fu Yuan also aced the Traditional Prawn Dumpling ($6.80/3 pcs) , which was delectable. Crunchy, juicy prawns bundled up in thin, semi-translucent skin. So, so difficult to resist!
The Honey-glazed Pork Buns ($5.20/3 pcs) scored points for its on-the-spot-sweetness and chunky, tender meat, while the our tongues revelled in the smooth texture of Rice Roll with Fresh Prawns and Yellow Chives ($8.80).
The ooze game is strong in the Steamed Salted Egg Custard Bun ($12/6 pcs). Thumbs up for its fluffy exterior and rich salted egg yolk flavour. Just when you thought that life can’t get any better, Man Fu Yuan raises the bar further with a deep fried rendition! The Deep-fried Salted Egg Custard Bun ($12/6 pcs) is undeniable decadent but, worth every calorie!
Bean Curd Skin Roll with Shrimps ($6.80/3 pcs) didn’t make a memorable impression but was overall alright. The Radish Cake with Preserved Meat ($5.20/ pcs) fared better. The smooth and soft radish cake was generously studded with Chinese Sausage which added textural variation, as well as punches of savoury flavour.
Don’t miss the lusciously smooth congee, which is available with a variety of ingredients-Fish($8), Minced Pork with Century Egg ($8), Seafood ($12) and Bird Nest with Dried Scallops($32).
At the end of the meal, the staff served complimentary mini glasses of Sour Plum Juice, which did a great job of cleansing our palates.
At Man Fu Yuan, you can feel a lot of attention does into every item to offer, plus, their ingredients, execution and service is top-notch. One note to keep in mind though-because the items are freshly cooked, do try to order everything you want at the start of the meal. We ordered the radish cake halfway through our lunch and had to wait 30 minutes for it to be served.
For those who like buffets, Man Fu Yuan offers a la carte Dim Sum Buffet Brunch on weekends at $58++ per adult and $28++ per child.

After trying out this mooncake, I decided to publish this on this platform for other users' reference.

My landlord and me enjoyed the fillings and flavours of Man Fu Yuan's White Lotus Seed Paste with Double Yolk earlier this morning before going to sleep.

This year is very special for us in trying out Man Fu Yuan's rendition of low-sugared classics White Lotus Seed Paste with Double Egg Yolk traditional baked mooncake.

Man Fu Yuan is one of Singapore’s finest Chinese restaurants, serving classic Cantonese cuisine created especially for the restaurant by a Hong Kong Master Chef. From now till 31 May 2014, Man Fu Yuan is serving some glorious dishes from the good old days, made using good quality ingredients and special and laborious techniques.
Now here are some favorites from the Nostalgic Menu. The flavourful Mixed Beef Stew with handmade beef balls 牛什牛丸煲 ($28 per portion). I love how the meat is tender and savory. The beef balls were succulent and had nice chunks of water chestnut in them. This is the perfect comfort food.
Tea-smoked Pork Belly Char Siew 脆皮叉烧 ($24 per portion) takes centre stage, featuring pork belly marinated in a combination of Chinese rose wine and barbecue sauce. It's fatty and decadent but hey YOLO.
I loved the Hong Kong Style Steamed Pork Belly in Shrimp Paste 港式咸虾酱蒸花肉 ($28 per portion). This is another comfort dish and i can fully identify with the flavors though i've never had this dish before. Salty, stinky and oh damn delicious. Give me another 2 bowls of rice.
Pig Trotters with Vinegar 猪脚醋 ($28 per portion). The meat was well braised in plum vinegar and you can smell the sour perfume from far. The dish is on the oily side though.
If you find these flavors familiar and are craving for it now, Man Fu Yuan's A Taste of Nostalgia Menu will be available as part of a rotating a la carte menu available daily till 31 May 2014. Do call the restaurant to find out if they'll be serving your favorite dish before heading down!

It is a dish usually one must have during Chinese New Year, as yusheng is considered a symbol of abundance, prosperity and vigor. The version here looks quite common. But then it is the experience of tossing the salad which is the most fun for this dish.

Beef Ball ($6.80++)
The Beef Ball was a disappointment though. It was rather bland and overly soft (almost to the extent of crumbling upon the touch of my chopsticks). Somehow, the beef didn't taste very fresh as well and resulted in the lackluster review.

Radish Cake ($5.20++)
A simple and wholesome treat for the palate. The Radish Cake was soft, flavourful and not too oily. I particularly liked the fact that it was not too starchy with more real radish chunks rather than flour present.

Roast Meat Platter ($32++)
We ordered their Char Siew, Roast Duck and Roast Chicken and it was really authentic and delicious! The Char Siew was slightly charred and crispy at the sides and chewy in the centre. The Roast Duck and Chicken were exceptionally soft, succulent and delectable – a true hallmark of a Cantonese restaurant!

Steamed Custard Bun ($12++)
Although this was rated as one of their signature dishes, I found it rather average and lacked the wow-factor. The bun was quite thick and a little on the tough side. Thankfully, the custard was rich, gooey and flavorsome.

How much the prices of mooncakes drop after Mid-Autumn Festival. So if you're just looking to satisfy your mooncake cravings and not as a gift for your friends/relatives, you can actually choose to buy the mooncakes after the festival itself. The lotus paste is very very luxuriously thick, smooth, sweet but not too sticky like some mooncakes would have been. The skin of the mooncake is also lightly baked and crumbly, it is simply one of the better traditional mooncakes out on the market. The double yolk is also a wonderful touch - I love how it is real salted egg yolk rather than some mooncakes with fake ones. You can taste the difference immediately once you eat it.

Good for an afternoon snack ;) So remember to get yours after the festival for a great deal. It is really much cheaper and also it remains fresh!

Embodying the true essence of the Mid-Autumn Festival is when you have a mooncake boasting of a paste that glistens with a silky emerald shade bearing semblance to green jade, and subtly enveloped by a layer of smooth ivory skin that echoes the luminescence of white jade. The delicate fragrance of Jasmine enthralls the palate, entrancing it with a bashful demeanour akin to a maiden's first expressions of romance - perhaps an allegory to the awestruck beauty of Chang'e herself?

The other flavours – Pulot Hitam, White Lotus Seed Paste and Sesame Paste, albeit exhibiting unique tastes and textures in their own rights, paled in comparison to their sister mooncake. Nevertheless, the overall quality is commendable with the ultra thin snowskin encapsulating the rich and smooth paste.

If you're still undecided on which mooncakes to "invest" your calories in this Mid-Autumn Festival, do seriously consider Man Fu Yuan's snowskin combo that promises a satisfying experience with aftertaste that lingers long after the ethereal delicacy is ingested, beckoning one to relish in its sweet memory...

Also takeaway luo mai gai (glutinous rice wrapped in tea leaves) and it is the bomb! It is so terribly good! Been craving for a week ever since i finished the last one. Gonna buy more and stock it up in the fridge!

And oh, the waitress was quite worried when i told her i want to takeaway the cold ones, and i will steam it at home. She gave very detailed instructions that liu sha bao cant be steamed too long, once the skin of bao is tore open, it will be a messy affair.

But for some reason, we ended up ordering dishes with less bang per buck, but decent nonetheless. We were a little disappointed with the service staff, who didn’t really offer much helpful suggestions or meal recommendations, but then again, I guess that’s the cause of going with a family of fussy eaters. They do have a nice selection of customized premium tea which deviates from the usual chinese tea selections and the menu even recommends different tea pairings.

This is the Roasted Meat Platter ($17), which comes with soya sauce chicken breast, roasted duck and char siew. The chicken and roasted duck were surprising not tough and an absolute delight to eat. The char siew slices were too thick for my liking but still very well marinated and flavourful.

Also part of the special anniversary meal is this Sauteed Clam dish ($17). The server took the initiative to split the dish for each person. The slightly salty brown gravy went really well with the fresh clam meat, but we realized the clam meat served was rather small and it was a hassle to pry open some clam shells that remain stubbornly tight shut.

Stewed Vermicelli with King Prawn and seafood ($17) is a really tasty *premium* seafood beehoon dish. It is fried with generous scallop and clam bits and sitting on top of the vermicelli is this really huge sized, fresh succulent king prawn. The vermicelli is freshly fried on the spot, as it is evident from the piping hot steam emanating from the dish when it arrived and the vermicelli isn’t too dry at all.

We also ordered some dim sum items which were rather impressive.

The Fried Radish Cake ($5.20) didn’t look appealing at first, but take one bite and you will be wowed by how perfectly golden crispy its outer skin is. The fragrant radish encased inside was really soft and smooth and it serves as a nice contrast against the crunchy outer layer.

And another staple in dim sum menus- Liu Sha Bao or Custard Bun ($12 for 6 pieces). Man Fu Yuan serves out a unique Deep fried version of custard bao, which has nice golden brown outer layer. The fillings for both steamed and deep fried versions are similar- rich, molten yellow blots of salted egg and custard that ooze out as you puncture your buns. I personally prefer the deep fried version- it’s a bit like eating man tou with custard filling, but both versions are really tasty. The rich, generous custard flowy fillings really make this bun worth trying. Do remember to ask them for the deep fried version, because it is not stated explicitly in the menu and out unhelpful waiter did not mention about it until asked.

The meal ended with a complimentary shot of sour plum concentrate, which was supposed to aid in digestion.

Overall, food here is good and has gotten even more affordable with their $17 promo items. They dish out decent great cantonese cuisine food here, but I would definitely not miss the unique deep fried custard bun.

On account of the complimentary Peking duck, I decided with much trepidation, to give Man Fu Yuan a chance to redeem itself after my previous dim sum lunch there turned out absolutely disastrous. This time it was for dinner though.

Peking Duck - I honestly didn't expect much from a complimentary dish and to say that I was pleasantly surprised would be an understatement. The duck set the tone right for the evening with its crisp skin sans the fat, wrapped in a lightly chewy/elastic crepe that reminded me uncannily of kueh. Interesting and definitely a change from the usual ones. The sliced meat did pale a little in comparison though, coming across as a wee bit too tough but at least it wasn't too gamy. Just for the record, the duck goes for $60++ on the menu.

Braised Homemade Beancurd with Live Prawn, Shimeji Mushroom and Minced Pork Sauce - The homemade beancurd had a nice savoury and mildy sweet taste to it, coupled with relatively small but fresh and sweet prawns and drizzled with a full bodied meat sauce - A simple yet appetising dish. I would have liked the beancurd a little more silky though.

Poached Asparagus with Bamboo Piths, Chinese Lyceums and Greens in Superior Broth - This was a simple yet tasty dish, with the superior broth (上汤) light yet flavourful. The asparagus, which came wrapped in crunchy bamboo pith (looked to me like fish maw at first glance), was cooked just right - crunchy and not too soft.

Mango Pudding - We rounded up our meal with a heart shaped mango pudding that was probably the sole disappointment that evening. The taste of mango was rather watered down but the sole consolation was that it didn't come across as too milky.

Red Bean Pancake - Well at least the red bean pancake fared better. Flaky exterior with just the right amount of flour, it would have been great if the red bean paste was slightly more concentrated. Still a good eat nonetheless.

I would say my perception of Man Fu Yuan has turned on its head 180 degrees after this dinner, putting me at a crossroads as to whether I should return. Prices are definitely not cheap and comparable to renowned Chinese restaurants in other hotels. Service was alot better this time round and so was the food. My take I'll be back for their dishes but not for their dim sum.

Sitting on the 2nd flr of the Intercontinental Singapore is the popular Man Fu Yuan Cantonese Restaurant. While dim sum reigns high on the list of dining preference for lunch, one can enjoy delicate Cantonese cuisine if time is not a concern.

Whenever I dine @ Man Fu Yuan, I like to start off with the Crispy Silver Fish @ S$8 a portion. The restaurant serves one of the best besides Lei Garden & Li Bai.

Ladies will be delighted in the nutritional Double-boiled Fish Maw in Shark’s Cartilage Consommé @ S$26, which is believed to be beneficial for the complexion.

The soup is painstakingly boiled for hours to extract the nourishing essence from the shark’s bone cartilage. Personally, it’s the best in most restaurants I’ve tried. Rich & milky.

Delectable creations include the Braised South African 5 Heads Abalone. This hard-as-rock mollusc is slowly braised into velvety smooth & subtly chewy abalone. For abalone lovers, this is one meal not to be missed.

Seafood lovers, you may also like to try the Sauteed Fresh Scallops with Cripsy Conpoy & Garden Greens @ S$38. The scallops has a delicate sweetness that could have come only from absolutely fresh seafood & I love the crunchy broccoli.

I’m a fried rice fan but many failed to tease my taste buds. Besides the fragrant smell, the Man Fu Yuan Fried Rice with Fresh Scallops & Conpoy is simply delicious. Plus, the tiny salted egg-yolk cubes add flavour to the rice.

Winner of several accolades, Man Fu Yuan is the perfect venue for a joyous family get-together, a business luncheon or an intimate dinner.
