My friend has been wanting to try this place since many people are raving about the shiok maki. And there was always a long queue - is the food really that good? My friend has been wanting to try this place since many people are raving about the shiok maki. And there was always a long queue - is the food really that good? Decided to try our luck last Saturday, and we were surprised that there is no Q at 5pm, but after 5 minutes, a long queue formed behind our back.

We were asked to share a table of 4 since there are only 2 of us with another couple. The table wasnt separated to have our own space. My friend was annoyed with the service as they also take a long time to take our orders when we have told them that we are ready. But she stayed on for the shio maki since everyone said its so good.

I guessed they are shorthanded as we were told that it will be an hour wait for the shiok maki. I had to order something to eat while waiting so yaki udon is ordered and my friend is a big fan of pitan tofu.

 The pitan tofu was sliced into 2 slices, which is very different compared to most places as its normally served as a block. The century egg gravy is quite diluted and the small lump of prawn roe on top is not fresh. Disappointment.

 Instructed the waitress to serve us the yaki udon hot. It came warm, and the presentation is abit off. The udon will be better if its piping hot and perhaps, lesser salt.

 The Shiok maki came after 45mins. It looks messy on first glance, and the sauce is too creamy.. but we decided to stop judging and eat it. The taste is horrible. The salmon is not definitely not fresh, and its too fishy. The sauce is too creamy that it 'swallows' the flavour of the maki, but its strange that it didnt manage to cover the fishyness of the salmon. Ate only 2, and i couldnt take it anymore.

 While we were about to leave, the customers at the counter seat left too. And then i saw the salmon slices... how on earth that salmon is kept this way?

Would not come again if i have a choice, or unless there is not so many people, then I will try the yaki udon again.

After hearing all the recommendation and review, I'm finally here at town area to try out Koh Grill & Sushi Bar. I ordered their best seller which was the shiok maki, it is a sushi roll with lightly roasted salmon, charcoal grilled unagi, avocado served with generous serving of mayo and tobiko. Based on the attractive look itself, it has already tempted me, shiok maki was indeed very shiok as all the ingredient just blend well together. Went to this restaurant a few months back due to the Shiok Maki craze on instagram. Almost everyday someone will post on instagram with pictures of Shiok Maki. Is it really that good? Yes i gotta say it is!!! Great combination of charcoal grilled eel wrapped with slightly cooked salmon. The cheesy mayonnaise sauce together with the salmon taste great. Food Republic is a nice enough place for meals. Slightly more on the pricey side, but it's air-conditioned, and food quality has so far been pretty well above what you might find at other food courts locally.But I wouldn't have pegged it for a crowd puller. Food Republic is a nice enough place for meals. Slightly more on the pricey side, but it's air-conditioned, and food quality has so far been pretty well above what you might find at other food courts locally.

But I wouldn't have pegged it for a crowd puller. Which explained my surprise when I saw not just queues but loooong queues out side Koh Grill & Sushi Bar at Food Republic, Wisma Atria. And it wasn't a one-off phenomenon but a consistent sight especially during dinner time.

I decided to beat the crowd and try it for myself.
Foodie tip: Best time to avoid the hordes and long waiting times is around 11-1130 on weekdays. Got seated immediately and it was quite empty that the waitresses had the time to attend to us nearly exclusively.

My first guess about Koh Grill & Sushi Bar was wrong. It wasn't some super discounted $1 sashimi. In fact, it was about cheap food in town at all!

Very alike any seafood fried rice one might be able to get at a random zi char stall. Admittedly it did past the olfactory test when it was served, piping hot and smelling just awesome to whet the appetite for things to come.

Definitely a letdown. The beef wasn't sufficiently thick to be enjoyable. Neither was it moist or juicy enough to warrant the $12 dollar price tag.

 Shiok!! Maki Gen 1 - $16.80
Star of the menu and small wonder. The cyborg sounding Shiok!! Maki Gen I actually packs quite a foodie-licious punch and is more than deserving of the 2 exclamation marks in its name. An assorted seafood maki, the signature dish has avocado, unagi and wrapped in rice with a tender piece of salmon draped on top, capped with seared cheese and fish roe. Ooh La La.

With hits and misses all round, it's questionable whether I would return to Koh Grill & Sushi Bar. I might if just for the Shiok!! Maki Gen II to test limits of shiokness, but definitely not if I have to queue.

You might not know what is Koh Grill and Sushi Bar, but surely you would have heard of the legendary "Shiok Maki". "Shiok" is a commonly used slang word among Singaporeans to express satisfaction. Be it on instagram, facebook or any sorts of social media platforms, people have been raving so much over this Shiok Maki from Koh Grill. So I know I must get down to try it.  Pidan Maki $16.80
Combination of sashimi and avocado, served with very own homemade sauce

Pitan (century eggs) sauce is drizzled over the maki wrapping avocado and sashimi. We all know pitan taste really strong, so personally I didn't quite like the overwhelming pitan sauce that covers the taste of avocado and sashimi.

Yet on the other hand, my friend actually quite like this dish because of the sauce. So it depends if you have a thing for pitan (century eggs).

 Crappy Maki $18
Crispy soft-shell crab and seaweed wrapped with seared swordfish belly
I'm guessing the word "crappy" derives from the soft-shell crab used in this maki. The crappy maki fare much better than the pitan maki. There's no additional strong sauce to confuse the taste bud so I get to enjoy the true taste of the swordfish belly. The smooth tender swordfish belly wraps the Japanese rice very nicely with its adequate thickness. Most of the maki here are also topped with abundant amount of tobiko.

Heavenly combination of charcoal grilled eel wrapped with lightly roasted salmon
Each and every shiok maki drizzled with charred cheesy mayonnaise and topped with excessive tobiko (again) seems very addictive. Parts of the salmon sashimi that wraps the maki are also scorched so it gives a well combination of raw and grilled salmon sashimi maki.

As much as I love this a lot (been here thrice just for shiok maki), the standard differs every time I was here. Sometimes, the presentation can be really neat (like the one in the photo) and the taste is satisfying; but sometimes the whole thing just looks like cheese mayonnaise splashed thoughtlessly onto the salmon sashimi wrapping the maki, giving a very mushy texture.

Here for dinner again!

This is my second visit here and I am still very excited to try their makis! My friend & I went close to dinner time and there was a long queue. Lucky for me, I had tea break earlier and wasn't starving or anything but my poor friend was so hungry! She is still willing to wait though. After close to 30 minutes, we finally got seats. We quickly ordered but the staff told us that makis have a waiting time of 15-20 minutes! My friend was about to faint so we ordered a Soba and Curry Udon to share

My friend was about to faint so we ordered a Soba and Curry Udon to share first while waiting for the makis to arrive. The previous time, I tried the Shiok! Maki 2nd Gen - $16.80 and so I wanted to try the 1st Gen.

The first to arrive was the Soba - $8 which I failed to take a picture because my friend was like a hungry ghost and quickly took her chopsticks and started eating. Haha. Anyway, there was nothing special about the soba.

 In contrast, the Curry Udon - $12 was delicious! The noodles were thick and the ingredients include fried ebi, potatoes, carrots. I love the curry!

 We also ordered the Crappy Maki, which was so yummy! The Crappy Maki consists of crispy soft-shell crab and seaweed wrapped with seared swordfish belly. There is a little spice in the sauce.

We left the place with happy fulfilled tummies and I will definitely visit Koh Grill & Sushi Bar again because their makis are really amazing!!!

I was able to get a table easily past 2.30 pm on a Friday afternoon.

Its appealing to see the amazing combination of colours and texture just for a single dish.

Shiok Maki has a combination of sushi roll of aburi salmon (lightly toasted salmon), mayo dressing, slices of avocado and charcoal grilled unagi (eel) and topped with generous amount of tobiko (flying fish roe). Served with slices of ginger and a tablespoon of wasabi.

The amalgamation of my favourite ingredients found in one dish for S$16.80 is indeed value for money.

Will go back for more.

Since i was alone, i don't want to be too adventurous so i stick to 2 items - Shiok Maki (the very popular item ) and the Century Egg Tofu. I paid around $20 for the bill which i thought was quite reasonable cause for Shiok Maki alone, it was loaded with a generous amount of ingredients.

I would strongly recommend Shiok Maki if it's your first visit. There was a second generation of shiok maki so i decide to try it. Instead of unagi for the original, this one was replaced with tempura prawn! I love it =)

The whole combination of the tempura prawn, wakame, salmon on top of it, drenched with the most amazing cheesy sauce and completed with a generous topping of tobiko. It's a very blissful feeling when i put the first piece in my mouth! I like this so much till i'm planning a second visit to try the original one.

Century egg tofu was very well done too. With fresh ingredients (very important), it can't go too wrong! Yummy!

 The star of Koh Grill - the Shiok Maki. We had the Gen 1. This costs $16, I think there were like 8 rolls in there. The taste was good, quite 'shiok' if I may say so myself. However, I honestly don't think it's worth $16. Maybe $12/$14 tops.

 For my main, I stuck with the salmon don. The 'don' choices available are pretty sad. Luckily my safe choice was there. The amount of salmon is too small. Although Japanese rice was used, it was not sticky and sweet like it should be.

So, to sum it all up: Koh Grill just isn't worth it. If you haven't been, you're not missing much.

Aside from the well known Shiok Maki, for meat lovers, add Aspara Buta Yaki to the order list.The delightful grilled pork slices wrapped with juicy asparagus. There were about four to five pieces of thin asparagus shoots to each piece.Topped with generous amount of fried minced garlic just add so much flavour to the dish.Priced at S$12.00 for six pieces at approximately $2.00 per piece.

Their 2nd generation shiok maki was quite unique and I went there a second time as my friend wanted to try it. I got their Crappy Maki which costs around $18 - quite pricey though for sushi, and not a very large portion. It is basically crispy soft shell crab with seaweed, wrapped with sowrdfish belly. It was not bad, but the combination was a little messy. I also had their hamachi, salmon belly and salmon, which were all very fresh.

Really really love this place for premium quality sushi at affordable prices! The restaurant is really cosy and the service crew was quite friendly. Went to this place twice and I really love the quality of their food! Their Sashimi tasted fresh and juicy and each slice was thick. We also ordered other main courses like curry udon, fried udon, omelette chicken with rice! As for side dishes, we ordered tofu on hot plate and gyoza! We also ordered other main courses like curry udon, fried udon, omelette chicken with rice! As for side dishes, we ordered tofu on hot plate and gyoza! Of course, we wouldn't miss the chance to try the legendary shiok maki! It was really good!!!

As for the other food we ordered, they tasted not bad and the price was reasonable. One important thing to note is that the place would be very crowded during lunch and dinner hours, so be sure to get there early to queue up. Not sure if reservation could be made but it would be even better as it saved a lot of time!

The whole combination with fried ebi, roe, mayonnaise, etc, was very good, but after a while it gets a bit jelat, as the mayonnaise taste is quite overwhelming.  The service is relatively slow, there is little attention to detail (e.g. I had to refill my own green tea!) -I suppose I would have been slightly happier if they had displayed a greater sense of urgency in clearing the tables to increase turnover rate...But they were relatively understaffed, unable to cope with the volume of diners. If you're willing to wait, (adding on another 15-20 minutes for the food to be served!) this place will be OK for you!

They don't serve water here, but try out their green tea (SWEETENED!). I find the sweetened version less bitter, but it's not too sweet like the canned versions. Delicious and refreshing -I honestly really liked it and I would come back to have my sushi complemented with this perfect glass of green tea!

We ordered a variety of cooked dishes, appetisers as well as makis to try -We ordered Sashimi Moriawase ($20), Original Koh Maki ($12), Shiok Maki Gen 1 ($16.80), Crappy Maki ($18), Yaki Udon ($10), Seaweed appetiser ($5), Agedashi Tofu ($4), Miso Eggplant ($5) and a Pitan Maki ($16.80).

 The agedashi tofu is crispy on the outside yet wonderfully soft and fluffy when you sink your teeth into it. I would have preferred slightly more soy sauce and it was a tad bland for my liking. The outside could have been slightly more crisp, but texture wise it was decent.

 The seaweed was nothing special - just ordinary seaweed in a tangy, savoury salad mix. It was refreshing and slightly savoury though, much to our delight. The Miso eggplant really surprised me however, it was piping hot, straight off the grill, with the skin edges charred. The miso gave the eggplant a different taste -it was almost like the miso had melded with the soft eggplant. There was also a slight BBQ aroma to it. Deliciously fragrant and worth the price!

 The Pitan maki had bits of raw fish in it (salmon?) and was rolled with fish roe and a special "pitan", or century egg, sauce to cover it. I thought it was a little strange as I'm really not a fan of century egg (there were cut up bits in the sauce!), but I was slightly surprised as the aroma wasn't overpoweringly strong, and it added a nice creamy texture to the maki. Not an ideal complement to the raw fish sushi, but interesting and unique enough to try if you're feeling adventurous.

 The yaki udon wasn't served as hot as we would have liked (there wasn't steam wafting from it
) -Ignoring this fact, the taste was deliciously perfect! The noodles had a slight spring to it and the gooey egg just coats every strand. It's slightly sticky and the flavour combination goes well with this consistency. There is a trace of Japanese soy sauce in this dish, lots of egg, topped with bonito flakes, making for an extremely savoury and mouth-watering main dish. We recommend you order one of this to share, plus a good few varieties of sushi to ensure that you try both their makis and their cooked food!

 The Crappy Maki (I hope I saw this right... i could have sworn it was a Crappy Maki) had soft shell crab (deep fried!) rolled into this maki, topped with a slice of seared fish. I must warn you though, the smoky aroma of the seared fish may not be appreciated by everyone -it has a really strong BBQ aroma! Other than this slightly unpleasant (only to me perhaps? my dining companions were perfectly content with this maki!) smoky flavour, the crunch of the soft shell crab is a delight as it provides contrast to the otherwise somewhat-delicate maki.

 The sashimi comes in various portions and prices, we ordered the medium range $20 one, with a good assortment of 5 different fish varieties (4 actually, with octopus!). There is a $38 portion which gives more fish, so this would be better for sharing with a larger group. The sashimi wasn't cold when served and that bugged me a little. However, the slices were thick and had a slightly creamy taste to it that was not only refreshing, but bordering on indulgent! Imagine if it were served cold... perfect!! This assortment also gives us a good chance to try the different fish -my favourite is definitely the swordfish as well as the salmon. Yum.

 The Shiok Maki has a thin layer of fish (lightly grilled) on top of the sushi. It has avocado inside, and a rich sauce of what tastes like mayo + melted cheese ...Feeling the calories yet? That's not it, the maki is topped off with fish roe for the savoury crunch. LEGENDARY -but the creaminess proves to be a bit much for me as I couldn't go beyond 2 pieces ....hmm maybe this is because it was served later on, haha. It has a faint smoky smell as well, albeit not as strong as the Crappy Maki. This one is really rich in the flavour though -not for those who like their Japanese food clean-tasting and light!

 The Koh signature maki had assorted seafood rolled into it (cooked seafood!) and you'd want to know that if you're looking for a conservative, sure-win, sure-to-be-popular-with-everyone maki -this is it. it is neither overly heavy on the sauce and flavour, not oddly unique (think: century-egg unique!) and not too controversial in taste/aroma. The bits of sesame made the sushi really aromatic, and I liked how the whole sushi turned out. Safe but delicious nonetheless! We unanimously agreed that this one is a sure-win!

Koh Grill & Sushi may not have been worth the 1 hour wait (including waiting for food to be served!), but it still gave a decent quality for the prices. The sushi is great to share, and for those who want quicker fuss-free dining (ironic since waiting for tables already takes a fair bit of time haha), they also offer set lunches. These range from $10-$17, and have sets with unagi, teriyaki chicken, yasai tempura etc etc.

There is great variety here, and we suggest the signatures to be safe -Shiok Maki (oh yes, they have this in 1st and 2nd gen. We only tried the 1st gen though!) and their Koh signature Maki. All must-tries! If you want to avoid a lunchtime queue, go before 12pm, or make a reservation -but don't expect stellar service here! You also have to walk to the counter to make payment which can be very messy when there are others waiting to pay (there is no proper line/order for making payment!). One good thing however, is that they accept credit card payment. There is also 10% discount for passion card members during weekdays!

We tried eating there on a tuesday afternoon but it still had a queue, so we skipped it then. But past 8pm on a Saturday night, the queue was still more than an hour. Be prepared to share your tables with others, as the waitresses here have no concern about you and your date. Albeit a window seating, we were sharing our entire table with a group of 5 other women. After that extremely long wait and hype, we were pretty tired when we finally settled down. So we ordered only 2 dishes, Shiok Maki, and another grilled Cod Fish Fillet (which we somehow forgot to take pictures of). 2 dishes for 2 people, for a hefty of about $35 in total.

 (I wonder if, by now, every Singaporean is immune to pictures of Shiok Maki?)

In conclusion, we felt food was quite overrated there, partly because of one key ingredient: mentaiko, which made everything taste good. By the way, we observed that the sushi rice was a mixture of chinese and japanese. For the price you pay, don't you think it would be fairer to get all japanese rice? The rice did not blend well with each other and so did not complete the wonderful maki taste we expected. I have definitely had better japanese food for that price elsewhere.
