It was a tough and dry chicken discovery, there weren't any sauce and thus the only thing that I could marinate my meat with was my saliva. But it wasn't enough, so I didn't enjoy this $7.50 chicken and had to 'kop' (steal in a nice way) my friend's chilli to make it less dry, only to be thoroughly freaked out because of the overpowering chilli that set my mouth on fire.
In translation this is supposed to be boneless chicken

Empar Penyet - $7.50
This is my friend's plate of Empar Penyet, we both had no idea what the correct translation of these indonesian wordings are, we tried to get the explanation of the service crew but apparently her english was really basic so she couldn't understand our question of what's actually in the dish. Anyway, my friend's dish was a more enjoyable one.

Teh Botol Sosro - $2.50
This is just some sweet drink, nothing in particular! They don't offer free water.

I tried the same brand of this ayam penyet when I was in Batam and was not impressed by it though there's many raves about it and is a "die die must try" food when in Indonesia. Perhaps it was the portion and size of the chicken leg compared to the tiny portion served there. I ordered the ayam penyet with white rice and gotten the chicken leg part with a solid full bowl of white rice. Also with the chicken is a piece of fried tau hu and some... deep fried bean thing which I didn't know what it is. The chicken is quite tender and flavorful, but lacked of the original "chicken" taste in it. It is crispy still and not very oily. I quite enjoy the meal though and was feeling very full after that.

Went to get a plate of Nasi Ayam Penyet for lunch at Lucky Plaza. The rice is flavourful, tasty, a perfect balance between ginger and chicken stock. The chicken is smashed at the right places, soft, well-seasoned, only slightly too oily for my liking. The main highlight of this dish would be the sambal. I ordered empal (beef) penyet and my wife had ayam, both dishes cost $6.90 (exclude GST). Both dishes were served very quickly so I suppose it's just quickly reheated, thereby making the food only slightly warm and a bit too dry. Overall, the chili might have saved the day, barely.

We popped into Ayam Penyet Ria at Orchard because I wanted Malay-style chicken soup. Plus, the food here is quite cheap. Smashed fried chicken breast served with blanched kangkong, cucumbers, lettuce, a piece of fried beancurd and loaded with bits of crunchy chicken batter drippings for extra texture. The chicken was tender and juicy, and we mopped up every last bit of the chicken batter drippings but its a bit oily. The serving size is pretty big and the rice is fragrant too. But for me, having

But for me, having ayam penyet, the most important ingredient is the chili. The chilli was quite spicy and really goes well with the chicken. The tahu telur was a bit disappointed. I can taste only the oil taste and the gravy was a bit bland. Not recommended. The ais campur was not bad. Its was not overly sweet nor bland. Overall, the food here was average.

So simple, but so good! Order the ayam penyet (smashed chicken) and gado-gado and you'll be addicted! I like the boneless chicken, but the boyfriend prefers the regular chicken - it's usually meatier, but I like how it's easier to eat the boneless version. If you run out of sambal (the spicy chili on the side), there's a counter where you can help yourself to more. You order at the counter and pay, and the meal is usually brought out in less than 10 minutes. The location on Level 1 Lucky Plaza is always busy and noisy, so it's not a place to go for a leisurely meal with a lot of talking.

The Ayam Penyet (smashed fried chicken) was a big piece of chicken that was not greasy and full of flavour. You cannot see it from this angle, but there was a mound of crunchy batter bits behind the chicken, reminding me of KFC. The breast meat attached to the small drumstick was a little dry and tough though, and the cafe could improve in that area.

Ayam Penyet Ria located at Lucky Plaza is really popular. There is always a long queue on most days, so be prepared to wait for a while. I ordered the gado gado in malay style which costs around $6. It consists of chips, potatoes and rice in cubes mixed in peanut sauce. The combination tastes really good.

I gulped on my orange juice until my glass was only half full. Too bad for me, the chicken was really sensational, it's just that my tastebuds are still not used to that level of spiciness.

I still ate it though, bit by bit. And FYI, had 2 glasses of OJ and even drank my ex-colleagues remaining iced tea. Don't know if I'll go back there anytime soon. Maybe as soon as my taste buds get used to spicy foods!

Girl's day out. We were in Ion. Then we realize that it's been sometimes since we went to Lucky Plaza for Ayam Penyet. Well i order the the chicken. The sambal was just too GOOD. Though it was extremely spicy i still eat it with my chicken and rice. The chicken was also very juicy. The crispness. The crumbs of the chicken was also too good. Since i was eating it after sometime i enjoyed my food to the fullest. We also ordered the crackers to eat with the rice. And the price is also reasonable.
