Headed to Modesto's for dinner, restaurant was relatively empty when we reached about 6.30pm. Ordered the Burratina e prosciutto crudo as starters to share. The thin parma ham slices went very well with the burrata cheese and cherry tomatoes. There was a mixture of salty, slightly sour and sweet taste with all the ingredients, very yummy! I especially like wood fired pizzas as they taste very different. The pizza had a very crunchy crust, much to our delight. The ham tasted juicy, and the there was a good blend with the artichokes and mushrooms. I don't like pizzas with too much tomato sauce, and Modesto's did it just right! Like the food here very much!

On my second visit, we went for SALMONE AFFUMICATO pizza. The smoked salmon and the cheeze tasted just so good together. Soft and fragrand with the crunch crust. It was just so heavenly.

The decor of the place is rustic with brick walls and all. I sat outside and faced the sea. It was very romantic, served with great food and friendly service.

This place gets all my thumbs up. ok I have only two thumbs!

This was perhaps one of the few restaurants at Vivo City that enjoys quite a peaceful view of the harbour and the vibrant lights of the Sentosa Boardwalk opposite. I was expecting quite abit of couples hanging out with the rather romantic setting especially during the Halloween celebrations season but was interrupted by the squeals of young children and dropping of plates and cutlery as the kids played with their own special plastic sets. It was quite an interesting sight, seeing how the restaurant was so family-friendly.

We decided to visit Modesto's as I've heard quite a far bit about their wood-fired pizza. But honestly, this was quite a far cry from what I'd expected. An Italian restaurant, I'd presume that their specialty lies in the pastas and pizzas. What we were anticipating turned out to be quite a disappointing dinner though.

Spicy Deep Fried Chicken Wings and Drumlets (S$16.50)

Served piping hot, this helped set pretty high expectations about what was going to come our way. With an evenly spread slight crisp that accompanies every bite, this was quite a satisfying treat. I like the marinade used, that was slightly spiced but not throat-burning spicy. I'm usually a pretty lazy person when it comes to eating wings outside, but this was good enough to make me 'fight' to get the small shreds of flesh out. I'm not too sure if it's worth the price though, as it tasted quite a tad like prawn paste chicken, except this had a tinge of spices added in its marinade. After trying the rest of what we'd ordered though, this became the highlight of my meal at Modesto's.

Quattro Stagioni Regular (S$26.50)

4 main ingredients of seafood, pork ham, mushroom and black kalamata olives in 4 separate quadrants

This was quite a disappointment indeed. Ingredients aside, the crust wasn't crisp enough and it was just a dull crack that came out of it. The top layer turned slightly soggy by the time it was served and it didn't have the inherent fragrance that usually came from wood-fired pizzas. It tasted pretty normal, a slightly thicker version of the crust by timbre.

I'm a pretty picky eater when it comes to seafood and I didn't like the type of prawns used. Though the servings were rather generous, the processed prawns that gave the fake crunch just didn't have that natural seafood sweetness to lift the flavour of the combination. The rest were just average tasting, and well, I'd say that this didn't live up to the standards of wood-fired pizzas. A pretty decent one that I've tried in Sydney was able to beat this easily, with the added fragrance in its after-taste, and nonetheless, the short-lived crunch to its crust that made it stand out. This just didn't make the cut.

Lasagna ($25)

Honestly, this wasn't fit to be called a lasagna, much less the audacity to be charged at $25+. It was the first time that I was able to separate out the layers very distinctly and cut it up nicely into cubes. The layers were all too thick and chewy, tasting a little like kueh layers. There was also a severe lack of cheese in it, and insufficient sauce to go with it. It's probably worse than a pre-packaged microwaved version I can get off the shelves of supermarkets.

This is a place where I'd probably never head back to for quite a long while. Mediocre food that's very much overpriced, I felt that it was really not worth the stomach space. Probably a place to consider if you're looking for a place with good ambience and scenery, but certainly not worth a special trip down for its food.

Modesto's, VivoCity

South, Singapore

June 2012

Merlion Wayfarer tried out the set dinner one fine evening in Modestos. Costing S$70, it comprised of one appetizer, two main courses (choices include pasta and pizza), and one dessert.

Fresh bread is served first with olive oil and balsamic vinegar. A good way to start the meal...

Crema Di Funghi, a "home-made cream of fresh mushroom soup, topped with cream". Sounds absolutely wicked, but tastes thick and mushroomy with hardly any hint of cream. Instead, lots of mushroom bits floating in the thick stew...

A toasted and fragrant Regular Pizza Amatriciana - The ingredients may be simple (tomato, cheese, pork bacon, onions), but the result was quite delicious...

Linguine Alle Vongole - Nothing "flat" about the spaghetti with fresh clams, dried chilli and garic in extra virgin olive oil and white wine sauce...

The original version of Tiramisu Modesto's with mascarpone cheese, espresso, savoiardi fingers and coffee liquer. A romantic way to end the dinner by the sea in a restaurant with dim lighting and professional service staff...

The view from inside the restaurant of the harbour outside...

The full album is available at: http://merlionwayfarer.blogspot.sg/2012/10/romancing-by-harbour.html

Love the pizza, authentic italian style pizza, crust is oven baked and crispy, comes with fresh ingredients especially love the parma ham. We also had the alfredo mushroom pasta, flavouful and serving quite huge. Also worth mentioning is the great ambience, our seat faced the waters and the restaurant is clean and cozy. Slightly pricey but i think is worthwhile for the great food and ambience , will definitely patronise the restaurant again!

Heard that this restuarant serves delicious pizza and pasta and hence, decided to give it a try. Given that there are a huge selection of pizza, we requested for the waiter to recommend us a few popular pizza. Love the pizza with pamar ham (as shown in the 3rd picture). Though there aren't many types of ingredients on the pizza (in fact, there are only cheese and ham), the pizza taste good. Highly recommend you to give it a try!

with a wide variety of italian food like pizzas.. pasta... and all the names in the menu written in italian words, one must really read the fine-print to know what ingredients is added in. i still think it's quite localized so you won't get a taste-bud SHOCK!

i'd recommend the brownie with ice-cream (not sure it's italian name). i don't really like chocolate (yes weird huh), but this is something like rolls royce chocolate where you won't get sick/tired of !

please make sure you bring at least $25.... per person.

Ran some errands at Vivo City with my gf and settled for dinner at Modestos, which happened to be one of the few outlets not packing in the crowd at dinner time.

Rather obscurely located at a corner of Vivo City (which might, to a certain degree, explain its lack of patrons), Modesto's boasts a nice waterfront view through its floor to ceiling windows (at its Vivo City outlet only) and a cosy brick laid interior that gives it a much welcomed casual intonation.

Complimentary Bread - I didn't hope for much when I set my eyes on the bread and sure enough, it wasn't much. The bread was a little too dry, probably from being left in the open for too long. Quantity wise was also rather pathetic.

Fritto Misto Di Modesto - A relatively large platter of deep fried soft shell crab, squid, prawns and silver breams which looked very appetizing the minute I set my eyes on it. However it didn't quite meet expectations. The deep fried soft shell crab, though crispy and fragrant, was a tad too salty for my liking while the squids were rather soft and limp, not chewy, giving the impression of being overcooked. The silver breams and prawns were close to tasteless as well - no sweetness from either seafood nor any taste from the light but bland batter. Alright I'm just being picky and it is still a decent dish. Bang for the buck wise, its still an open verdict.

Pizza Quattro Stagioni - Honestly, this is the first time I'm having such a pizza - one which is divided into 4 different sections, each with a different topping. One part olive, one part seafood, one part ham and one part mushrooms. Presents a rather challenging task if you ask me, as different ingredients require different amounts of cooking time. The chef must have known his stuff as the pizza turned out fairly good. Using tomato sauce as the base, it didn't come across as too overwhelming and the crust was reasonably thin and full of bite, but just a little burnt around the edges. Ingredients were generous and cooked just right, complementing the pizza very well. I must say that this is one of the better pizzas that I've tried. Give me this over Pizza Hut or Canadian Pizza anyday.

Rigatoni All' Amatriciana - I've never been a fan of tomato based pastas simply because I prefer its cream base relative and that most of the pastas I've eaten which utilizes such a base tend to have this overwhelming tomato taste. Modesto's rendition of the Rigatoni, which is a tomato based pasta, didn't have this problem though. The tomato sauce was mild, in fact a little too mild to fall short of tasty and came with bits of pork bacon and onions, which did serve to enhance the overall flavour (luckily). The large tube pasta was a little undercooked though and I seriously think that this dish could do with more ingredients for its price.

Tiramisu Modesto's - I've been on a Tiramisu roll these few days and so this came as a natural extension to my meal, especially when it came highly recommended. Comparing this to the one I had at Romano Ristorante, this one was actually much finer and definitely more presentable. Though it came across as light and fluffy, the sponge to cream ratio was rather skewed, with the latter being the predominant party. Thus I couldn't quite taste the texture of the cake, which is quite sad really.

After a 30% discount, the bill worked out to be >$60 for 2 pax, which still falls within my range of reasonable pricing, but do away with the discount and I might have to think really hard before coming back. Service is good though, but I don't really fancy paying so much for a casual dinner.

The places was packed with office crowd when I entered the restaurant. The food was really normal to me , and the service was really bad. It took very long for me to get one of the staff to get me some water. We ordered some pasta and pizza to share. But I was already full after eating the creamy pasta which I had ordered. So I took home the pizza instead. I think if I was to eat the pizza instead of the pasta, my mood would be better after I come out of the restaurant.

Tomato, mozzarella cheese, scamorza cheese and pork sausages

Pizza is good especially it is toasted with wood fire. I was expecting small, round slices of pork sausages decorated over the pizza. But it came in the form of lump pork sausages @_@ Oh well ~

We brought half of the pizza home as we cannot finish it and the crust is still crispy after some heating in oven! This is how a good pizza should be ;)

Erm, there are 2 sizes of pizza available to order ... we should have ordered the mini version but found it not worthy since the regular version was just a few dollars more ;p

Fresh home-made black ink pasta served with sauteed scallops, prawns and diced tomatoes in a shrimp bisque sauce

I have eaten this ink pasta few years before but today's ink pasta has a strong squid smell which is rather disturbing if one has to finish on own. Doubt I'll have ink pasta again .. I'll try other pasta next time
