After trying the highly raved crabmeat pasta which I felt was overrated, I had the seared scallop & prawn pasta with prawn bisque sauce ($26). Linguine wasn't done in al dente style which I would very much prefer as the linguine was soaked in the watery prawn bisque sauce. The sauce had a watery texture which resembled that of gravy. There was a distinct prawn taste in the bisque. The scallops were a tad tough and wasn't really easy to chew and swallow. My partner had the beef and red wine ragu

My partner had the beef and red wine ragu pasta ($26). The braised oxtail in it was tender and easily absorbed the gravy. Garlic was added but it was very mild. We couldn't really taste any hint of red wine too. Overall, it tasted average.

I enjoyed the shake the most as I really love the chocolate & banana combination!

The Marmalade Pantry first opened its city outlet in 2009, enticing diners with its 'modernist larder' concept, which promises fresh, healthy and tasty food that is prepared quickly. Drawing rave reviews, especially for their creative and pretty cupcakes, pastries and cakes, I was left feeling confused when I experienced poor food and poor service at The Marmalade Pantry during a recent visit... perhaps it was a bad day for them.

Ambience at The Marmalade Pantry has an elegant colonial charm, with fine tableware and colours of black and white offset by gold and wood trimmings. Love the open concept of the city outlet, perfect for people watching and relaxing. But the cramped floorspace means less privacy, and you can easily listen in on the next table's conversations.

During my visit, I received below average service at the The Marmalade Pantry. First, it was difficult to attract staff's attention, even though the restaurant wasn't packed. Second, they forget to serve my dessert after I asked for it, and I had to remind them again. On the plus side, staff did offer greetings when I stepped into The Marmalade Pantry, and food was served quickly.

I'm rather ambivalent about the food at The Marmalade Pantry. While I commend the use of fresh ingredients, and the beautiful plating of dishes, the actual execution of the dishes fell flat. For a upper-range cafe with higher than average prices, I expect better quality and skill than what I got, as such, I feel that The Marmalade Pantry is not value for money.

Portions sizes are decent enough for one person. I think the desserts at The Marmalade Pantry stood out for me as well, very pretty presentations, with good taste, though some are overly sweet. Overall, I would probably only recommend The Marmalade Pantry for desserts, not for main courses.

The aggressive looking Lemon Meringue Sponge Cake (SGD $8) has a sweet, airy, and light meringue that shatters easily, revealing the soft cake within. The cake is somewhat dry, but stands out for its zesty lemon cream that is a burst of flavour in the mouth.

I loved the Peony Jade White Tea (SGD $7), with its light body, delicate floral aroma, and sweet fruity taste of lychee and passionfruit, with a slight bitter finish. Excellent choice for an afternoon high tea session!

The Bananas And Berries Hotcakes (SGD $16) is served with a medly of berries (blueberries, strawberries) and honeycomb infused butter. The problem was the poorly cooked pancakes, which were limp, dry, and slightly tough in texture. Not satisfiying or tasty at all, in fact, The Marmalade Pantry received several complains about the poor quality of this dish from diners that day. Avoid!

The Seared Scallop And Prawn Fettuccine (SGD $24) was actually good. The fettuccine pasta was cooked well, and the seafood of scallops and prawns were plump, meaty, and fresh! However, the tiger prawn bisque sauce tasted similar to the Prawn Noodles soup you'll get from your local coffee shop, making this a fusion style dish, with Italian and Singaporean influence. Also, I felt the stock was too intense, and the aroma of crustacean was so overpowering the table next to ours could smell it. I had a hard time wrapping my mind around the fact that I was eating something that tastes like a Singaporean Prawn Noodles soup.

The Pandan Kaya Cupcake (SGD $4.80) was created to celebrate Singapore's National Day by resident pastry chef Louie Moong, and features a soft, moist, pandan and coconut flavoured cupcake, topped with a swirl of coconut meringue, with a dollop of kaya / pandan coconut egg jam at the center.

he moment you enter the cafe / restaurant, you will pass by the counter where rows of delectable-looking pastries greet you. Yes, they all look so good, it makes you wonder which to pick.

Got seated, and browsed the menu. The wait staff were rather efficient, constantly checking if we were ready to order.

For the first visit, it was really just tea break, so I happily ordered myself a slice of Dark Cherry Tart and an Iced Chocolate with Ice-Cream.

The tart, while topped with plenty of dark cherries, is rather barren of ingredients within. It has the texture of a pie - slightly chewy, not crunchily-fluffy like how tarts are supposed to be. The crust is of the right level of hardness - easy to break but retaining the slightly-harder outer layer of a good tart. Nonetheless, I loved the light, buttery fragrance of the tart paired with the sour-sweetness of the juicy cherries.

The Iced Chocolate is another story altogether - diluted, Milo-tasting drink which was only made nicer with the scoop of vanilla ice-cream adding flavor to it. Pardon me, or could it be that my tastebuds were blanded by the sweetness of the cake? I doubt so.

Fluffy Coconut Cream Cake $7
This is one of the best cakes I have ever had to be completely honest: it's mix of coconut and cream and soft sponge cake makes it absolutely incredible and delicious. This is a MUST TRY for everyone! Really unique mix and surprisingly delightful!

Overall, my experience at Marmalade Pantry has been an extremely delightful experience and I will definitely be coming back to try the other cakes on the menu!

We ordered Old Fashioned Chocolate Fudge Cake @S$7.00 per slice. The slice portion was generous. The fudge is very thick and rich to savour. The sweetness wasn't overloaded and just nice and I think chocolate lover will love it. However, it is slightly dry though. We paired it with the choice of tea to smoothen our throats after a few bites.

As for the drinks, we ordered different selection of Gryphon Teas from the range of S$6.50 to S$7.00 per pax. The teas are re-fillable. So, we managed to try on White Tea- Peony Jade, Green Tea-Sakura to name a few. All comes with unique taste and we pretty enjoyed exploring the tea to pair with the cakes.

Service wise wasn't too friendly though. The service staff was not friendly and did not put on a smile. We have difficulties getting their attention when we are requesting for services. Total bill inclusive of service charges and GST charges.

On that day, the service was quite fast. In less than 15 minutes, I received my order hot and fresh. As always, it was just topped with a lot of crab meat flakes. You can easily tell that they didnt scrimp on the ingredients because the smell would just envelope your nose once it's set in front of you. The pasta was cooked just right. It wasn't soggy and it still had that bite. Plus there was more than enough sauce on the plate. And of course, the pine nuts added a different character and texture to this item. It was just the complete combo. When my friend tried it, he agreed that it was sooo good. He liked it so much, we ended up sharing the Crabmeat linguini. Oh well, he was the one who paid for it...

Dinner @ Marmalade Pantry! The service was rather good and the portion size of the pasta was just right. I had the crab pasta but it was abit salty though, I really enjoy the desserts especially the Marmalade Pantry's very own carrot cake. Will definitely pop by for dinner again with my friends. Slightly pricey but I think the service and the food is worth the price!

You know when a restaurant is good when food you ordered with your companion were served hot together at the same time. Overall this is good place to go anytime you want to get good things to eat. Although the price may be on the higher side, the portion and taste that comes with it could easily change your mindset. Definitely worth many more visits!

Bill came up to an exact amount of SGD50. My verdict? The sticky date and toffee pudding was definitely worth it but I wouldn't pay so much for a main. I think the 1-for-1 is much more worth it!
